The release of Thriller should be on here. If you look at album sales in the couple of years before the release of Thriller and after I think it's a pretty significant event in music history.

It struck a chord for musicians rights --- but Tom Petty did it first, and best, by withholding the masters for his newest Album until the Lablel Execs agreed to revisit his contract in 1979.
Consider that the Beatles --- the most important and greatest band ever to form and arguably the most profitable overall --- collectively were paid 2.5% royalties ON EVERY SONG.... meaning the owner of the music rights (Northern Music) raked in BILLIONS of Dollars while the band members each got .625% in return. When you couple that with Englands INSANE tax rate (back then, 95% if over a few million pounds) the band was getting shafted for every song they released...... all while the music industry ate fatly from their work.
Events like Taylor Swift (or Tom Petty) struck a hit against the music industry for more fair division of the money spent on purchasing music. Now if only an artist would stand up against Spotify for their abyssmal division of $$$.
Michael Jackson made so many iconic milestones in history. From the Jackson5, first black artist to be played on MTV, to speakomh out against the big music conpanies (also Prince). He is iconic. The Jackson kids are tbh
David Bowie calling out MTV for not playing black artists was a huge game changer. It forced MTV to rethink its own way of what videos they played on TV.

Yes, i recall when Beethoven premiered his 9th. The excitement led to a very full chamber pot upon my return home. A night i will never forget.
I went and saw the Utah symphony play Beethoven's 9th, and it was so phenomenal. I can only imagine what it was like to actually be there with Beethoven. The place was packed, this was written over 200 years ago and people still cherish it. It deserves its spot.
i recall we were giving him an uproarious standing ovation but ol' Ludwig had his back turned against us. he was as deaf as a doornail so he couldn't hear the applause. when he finally turned around, he saw the audience cheering for him and his eyes started to water as he recalled his childhood swimming in the lake while gazing at the stars. that was an epically magnificent night.

It's not a knock at Swifties whatsoever, but many big name artists did what she ended up having to do before and after the fact. The only reason Taylor was included on here was for a representation of having a current big name in music on this list (whilst ignoring some of the other big name musicians of this generation).

I was babysitting the night the Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan Show, fell in love, and spent my babysitting money, as soon as I could rush to Grinnell's Music, on "Meet the Beatles." Was never the same afterward. Still a Paul girl! And Ludwig!!! What a masterpiece! Loved the video, thank you.
The launch of MTV is number one bar none. The music video itself became an art form and Michael Jackson’s Thriller video and Thriller album sales proves it. Not to mention Madonna at the first VMA’s. The music industry was never the same before or after

The Beatles changed the history of the industry hundreds of times, including the music video itself. If that were justification for putting it first, anything by the Beatles would cover the top 10.

Imagine the most electronic sounding music possible. All of it comes from the oldest, most classical music you can imagine, and this is one of the points where electronic stuff really was taking off in an entirely new form as in one of many different phases. I’m a super electronic/melodic music person, but I love where it has evolved from.
As someone who's not really an expert on music theory/history (more of a production & instrument enthusiast) I think you're correct regarding its roots & origins. Most if not all of electronic music is derived from minimalism which is a subgenre of 20th century classical music.
Electronic music to me, for the most part is repetitive, instrumental & more focused on timbres or colors of the sound which I find stimulating compared to other genres of music. It also has very rich & fascinating history

You left out some major things. DJ Kool Herc, Run DMC and Aerosmith, Tupac’s Double Album, The invention of the Album cover, Motown, the band Death, and Rocket 88 (which is very very important! And more important than anything Taylor swift has ever done or will do).
Oh yes, Album covers added so much to my music experience in the 60's-90's. There was a lot of thought and creativity behind them. Spending an afternoon in a record stores to view them was part of the music culture of the time.
The Jackson 5, Rapper's Delight, Madonna, MTV, Live AID and We are the World and more the 70s and 80s were mind-blowing.

It's not about who she is but what she did. Since the beginning of Record Labels, the record company owns the Masters, the copy that is the original recording. Taylor Swift literally stole her music from the previous label by re-recording her entire catalog so she would own the Masters. No other artist has done this. Ever. Now that it's been done, other artists will do it. This serves notice to the big record labels - you don't own the music, you own a copy.

@@randomize27ONE music artist had done this before: Larry Norman way back in the late 60's and all through the 1970s. But he was labeled a troublemaker and rebel by all the music labels he worked for (Capitol, MGM, Verve and finally Christian music label Word Records.) and even sued by some of those labels. He wound up having to create his own label (Solid Rock Records) in order to get his music out.
In the end, he simply re-released all his albums with new songs on the Solid Rock label, and the music studio execs got tired of fighting him, looking for royalties from music they claimed to own.

It's too bad not many people know about the disco demo event at Comiskey Park, Chicago. It happened in-between two major league baseball games. I can imagine it was a powerful experience to see crates of disco records explode.

During the Freddie Mercury tribute show a priceless moment happened when the audience was singing along with George Michael on Somebody to Love and they sang the final chorus the same way as it was on the album breaking the word love into multiple syllables on multiple levels. I apologize that I am not describing it properly but if you know the song you probably know of what I speak. Or type.

Some of the choices on this list are very questionable but I digress the one about the Jackson 5 should have been attributed to their 1969 appearance on the Ed Sullivan show although it was not their television debut It was more of an iconic appearance early in their careers and more fitting introduction to the public

I would mention the Depeche Mode 101 concert in 1988, when they played in front of 70.000 fans in the Rose Bowl stadium in pasadena. As an electronic group from england. Something only the biggest rock bands could do. And that changed the view on electronic music forever.

the earlier days of Napster and Livewire was crazy back then followed by torrent was crazy!! The Beatles, MJ, Elvis, Freddie Mercury, Jimmi Hendrix and so much more past performers -once in a generation names for a lot of genres. This list here showcases some big historical moments in music. #1 definitely surprised me but after reading into how he did it, definitely hands down!!

I recall the premiere of Beethoven's 9th symphony like it was yesterday.
There I sat in my powdered wig, enjoying the candlelit theater even I though I was battling a bout of cholera.

I missed it as I was in the lobby having a sarsaparilla.
I stopped with the livery stable blues, this makes it sound as though the first well known jazz recording is being confused with the creation of jazz itself and the impact the genre itself had. It's probably not intentional, but comes off very wrong.

I was very young when Woodstock happened. I was told that Jimi's Star Spangled Banner was disrespectful. Electric guitars are an instrument of rebelion. An electric played by a black man?
Fast forward to adult me. I was at my Dad's house watching a game. A Purple Haze instrumental was featured in a Coke commercial. Coke obviously paid big bucks for the rights, but my Dad commented unfavorably. At least he noticed.
Jimi is widely regarded today as one of the greatest musicians to walk the planet. My Dad never got it. May they both rest in peace.

Having Taylor Swift on here for her Taylor’s version re-recordings shouldn’t be on here because there were far more important moments that happened in the industry than this. Just because she is almost everywhere these days doesn’t mean she has to be included in every list like this.
She challenged the way things are done. That you don’t like her doesn’t mean she isn’t making history. The impact of her “Taylor’s Versions” is unique because we have never seen an artist fight like this for their masters and be so successful at it. Out of it most artist are leaving their labels and agents and claiming back their art. Before TS the agent was the sayall of an artist career. They decided what could be done or not and their label had all control of their art. Now universal music is borderline working FOR Taylor. she’s a force to be reckoned. She has changed the industry 🤷🏻♀️

Bohemian Rhapsody was the first promotional pop video and started the pop video revolution. It was made as they were unable to take time out from their tour. After this other groups made making it the standard for M TV. 🤠

the moonwalk/thriller was the most important thing in music history in MY opinion. the early 80s the industry was stale nobody could sell anything , music videos were an afterthought then here comes MJ changing the entire way that music was being promoted, consumed and created with 1 album and 1 live performance
Queen had a complete concert tour after Live Aid. Calling Live Aid one of Freddie's last major performances is ludicrous at best 🙄
