Cannot forget the first day I heard this song. January 3rd 1987. Had just got an ambient fm stereo radio tape recorder for Christmas. Was 14. It was -10c outside. The UK west country. What a sound to find them while looking at dark, deep blue evening winter sky. Unbelievable sound then. Alive and Kicking Simple Minds, Ride like the wind Christopher Cross was on the same afternoon.
The desperation and pain of having to break up a relationship because of "living in another world to you" is so heartbreakingly good expressed in this song and music, the despair, the grief, mind-blowing.
Yep definitely a song about the break up of a relationship "We're better Parted" Sometimes things run their course and the time you invested and the energy with it only compound the feelings and the deep seated emotional processing of that. Needing to find a way out of the Maze or Cul De Sac of emotions and thoughts is very important so you can move forward That (Forget) Living in another World is such an important emphasis
The hermonica and then the congas and harmonica back in part gives me goodebumps everytime. The song just builds and builds and then keeps building when you think it just has reached the max. Mark feels this with his lyrics. A masterpiece.
It also stood out in '86 which was a time with a lot of synth pop and glam metal because of its instrumentation and production. If felt very real, earthy and genuine back then compared to a lot of stuff on the radio at the same time. 86 was also a great year that saw the release of Peter Gabriel's So and 87 would be an even bigger year musically (REM Document, U2 The Joshua Tree, INXS Kick, Robbie Robertson's eponymous come back, The Cure Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and more). It really was a great time to be alive. The Color of Spring for me holds a special place though as it really gets to me emotionally like few albums can. Hope you really enjoy it too!

Oh yes! Time it's time is an unbelievable 8ish minutes of music. Its astonishing outro reduces me to tears and makes my spirits soar, all at the same time.
A favorite song from a favorite band. So glad you’re on your Talk Talk journey and are very much enjoying it, Justin. Great call on that chord change. :-) I’m gonna go back and listen to your other reactions to them. Consider “tomorrow’s started“. The live in London version is great. Can’t recall if the studio version is as good. “Renee” and “Give it Up” are top-notch as well.
I agree, the live version of Tomorrow Started performed at London is better than the studio version. "Does Caroline Know" and "The Party's Over" are awesome.
That's put me in the mood for more music tonight, Stevie Winwood's organ is always great. Great Saturday evening choice. With that harmonica I fancy a bit of Paul Butterfield's East/West now.

I bought this when it was first released. I've always loved it. Their two previous allbums are also classic. The their first is more pop-style, but their second is more in the vain. I highly recommend them.
Morris Pert was THE Percussion Man for decades. He even played on one of my favorite (and criminally under-appreciated) Prog albums, Smallcreep's Day. What a legacy he left behind.

This song is a maelstrom, isn't it? Mark Feltham for the win! God, what a beast on harmonica. No wonder he's such a frequent guest star on people's records, across Gary Moore's "Close as You Get" right up to Steven Wilson's "To the Bone". The chord changes are nuts. On paper they shouldn't work at all. I can understand maybe not being as overwhelmed by the song in the context of the album but hearing it for the first time (I think on the "Natural History" comp) I was *floored* by it. The energy is just relentless. Nonetheless it's always been a break-up song to me. Interesting that bits of it already existed years back in form of the "Caroline" demo, which means that the song probably has some connection to the elusive "Chameleon Hour" album and the diceman concept... If you haven't seen it yet, definitely look up the video clip, it's absolutely hilarious and you can see the foot in the piano!
Nothing is bad on this wonderful album. Perfection. Mark Feltham on harmonica is fantastic! Steven Wilson who is a big fan of Talk Talk has invited him on his album To the Bone.
I got into this album two years ago having only known of Its my Life. I always liked that song but learning of their last 3 albums added SO much to my life!
Running the risk of sounding like a bit of an arse, if you can get hold of London 1986, the live album they released a few years ago, the version on that really allows Feltham (harmonica) to go ballistic, it’s glorious. Check out his Nine Below Zero stuff too. Phenomenal player.
Really liking these reaction for Talk Talk, I think you should spend some more time on this genre. Some really incredible bands and songs during the 80's new wave era. Yeah, it's crazy when a chord change can be considered a hook, but it does have that effect.
Pop music doesn't get better than this. It's commercial, digestible, arty, perfectly crafted. No wonder EMI were furious when, expecting more of this, they got the totally uncommercial experimental art pop of Spirit of Eden instead. Which means that, since you've pronounced this track as your least favorite in the album so far, maybe Hollis & Co. were on the right track all along as far s you are concerned. You'll love Chameleon Day.
I'm amazed! You react to the hole color of spring! Also comment the other videos and man.... You know what good music is. This song is my favorite on this album but the rest is a gift for the world. R. I. P. Mark Hollis and thank you for the music
Whenever I have an acoustic guitar in my hands, I just can't _not_ strum this amazing song for at least a moment! 😄👍 It's also great you were listening to the longer _album_ version! The younger generation could say this song is the middle point of the album but for me it's the opener of side B. To be followed by the best song, Give It Up. What a perfect place to hide the true gem of the album after the almost perfect side A.
