Thanks for watching!
Gosh every time Chris drops a video there is great value and wisdom. THAT'S RIGHT! Never Split the Difference is the master key for life!
After working at a very large financial institution, I found that all email has a tone the hard way. It's much easier for people to misinterpret what you're writing than it is to misinterpret what you're verbally saying. All of the audio cues (and even some physical cues) in normal conversation are lost. Therefore people fill in the blanks with their imagination and come up with all sorts of crazy interpretations. Keeping it short is good advice so there is a less of a chance you write something that someone will interpret the wrong way.
Built to sell: he even has his book on the shelf behind him. Subtle sales tactic. Looks like he even has the book in a different language for international viewers. Super clever 👏👏👏
It's the German version of his book.
The cover is different as you can see but all else is identical.
And the video for me was bookended by Masterclass ads featuring Chris Voss.
User422 so germans can read the cover but they can’t read anything inside and need to buy the German language version too doubling his profits.🤔😁👍
You have low standards for cleverness.
Gotta make it easy for people to get what you're selling
Chris Voss is a rock star!!! I use his techniques every day in my work as a lawyer. Thank you Chris and the Black Swan team.
Wow I found all the errors in my email I send to my friend inviting them for an event. Short length, "I am sorry" soft landing and tone of email and finish email with "I wrote the email to finish at positive note" are all my action items now. Thank you!
Hey Mr.Voss!
Thanks for the great content you put out.
Greatings from Norway!
Great utility, thanks Chris! Business communication is via email by far the most common so great impact on day to day basis from these approaches.
Loved your book and appreciate this additional advice.
Less is more
Set it up
Land it
End positively
Love Chriss Voss and all the advice. Thanks!!
🔥The last impression in the lasting impression. 🔥 Always got to remember that. Thank you Chris.
Thank you, Chris. My husband and I love your book. We have the audible version so we listen in the car or on a run :0)
Read your book and have been hooked on learning as much as I can digest as fast as I can
This is awesome content. Thank you for putting this out.
I am applying your methods every chance I get and the results are astonishing. I am so grateful you are shaping minds and changing lives in all walks of life for the better just like you did mine. Thank you.
Your contribution for learners are great🤗
Thank you for this video !
Hello Mr Voss!🙋🏽♀️Great advise and love your work. Greetings from South Africa.
Thanks Chris.
Thank you for your video. You are fantastic!
Flawless as always, thanks a lot Chris 👍🏽
You guys are my heroes.
Thank you so much with all my heart
This is awesome technique, thank you Chris! 😎
Nicely doe and ideas I already follow. Great for a refresher though.
I am working on a new lecture and this has inspired me to go in a new direction. I appreciate what you have stated so clearly. Can't wait to learn more from you.
Brilliant. Nailed it Chris
I love all of your videos.
Thank you. This is great advice.
So good :)
You are a great Realife SuperHero Chris. Extremely Cool.
Hello Chris and the black swan group! I follow your videos avidly, and currently reading your book. I just wonder if you'd have any advice on negotiating with your employer where you do not necessarily have leverage:
- salary increase
- compensation in a mutual agreed termination of employment
- as a labor union representative, how can you negotiate the best terms of working conditions for employees when the employer has defined which direction/policies it wants to set up. Often at the employees' expenses.
Great stuff, hopefully I can make this work to get better financial aid from college!
I’ve blown so many potential opportunities and deals. The chess illustration was killer. I’ve improved after reading the book but I’m getting better.
After 8 freakin videos I was blessed by Chriss's techniques.
Awesome 😎
Another great, Video. Is there a way to get a few examples of emails constructed using your methods?
That must be why attorneys demand letters are usually three brief paragraphs.
Something like
We're sorry to inform you, we're going to sue your ass, my client looks forward to spending your money.
And your silence is agreement that we spend it.
Then the next letter comes. Oh btw, we forgot the rest of your stuff. 🤣🤣
Good video
I bought your book. I like it (From Viet Nam)
Hey Chris I enjoy your content and this is the first video of yours i have seen. I hve seen the TED talk a couple of times and seen other times you have been interviewed. I am going to give you some crtisim about the way this video was shot so that when I come to see more of your content the experence is more natural.
* Relax in the chair that you are in, as if you are being interviewed.
* The camera can see you. it might ber small by if it can see the books behind you it can see you.
* Eyes on the camera. Please try not to point your nose at the camera. if you are reading off your screen when you are filming and you use glasses then put them on,. the world doesn't mind that you where glasses we dont need to know if you can get a train up your nose.
Im not a film guy i just love your content and i want to see more and and you made me feel comfortable for me to be able to give you some constructive critisim. I watched this video and was thinking of the CNN interview with Anderson Cooper. Im still laughing at that one.
ALL THE BEST.
You did "the sandwich" AND the 4 steps Chris outlined in his video. Pretty cool. Good tips, too.
Brandon has exactly Chris's voice and tonality...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO haha Love it!
Chris is hilarious too
In times of pandemic and the economy down there here in Brazil, and you see that the job is going away ... in any way you try to negotiate with the boss, even to reduce the salary ... I had no way reduce my email message because, in writing, I talk more than verbally.
Thank you so much for this information. Sometimes we think we know about a topic, then someone like this comes along and destroys your beliefs
How can this apply to college applications? How can I stand out among all other students who write the same prompts with the same structure? Thank you
My problem with emails and people is this...No one ever answers all the questions in them!
I literally ask 2 questions, and only 1 ever gets answered. All I need to know is:
"Are beans moving out of Shipper A to Receiver B and what is current rate?"
I only get "We have beans".
I've actually listed 3-4 questions out in a line A, B, C, D...and people STILL won't answer them, even though they are yes/no answers.
I get this issue a lot as my job requires specifics and often clients are more comfortable via email as they can be "more ready"
I try to make it as idiot proof as possible and clearly separate each question. I never have multi part questions. Then I read them back and use less words until I can't use any less without destroying the question.
Then if they still fuck it up I don't reply because I don't deal with idiots. Kills two birds with one stone.
"As per my last email, please also tell what the rates are."
Is basically corporate speech for
"Listen, dipshit, start reading shit correctly."
nice
🤣😂😂 after reading the book, I’m guilty of this 🙋🏻♂️ lol
Chris is so likeable hhaha
I'm afraid I have to leave a comment... Or, I'm sorry I have to leave a comment... Good stuff.
Does this apply to text as well?
What I would really like to tell you is: (Now write your very first sentence in this space).
In other words, start with your point don't get to your point.
Do you think they'll read the wrong tone into "go pound sand"?
For example: The email was sent on time within 4 days of the meeting - as agreed. They were supposed to respond within a few days. 7 days pass and silence. How to do such a follow up? You need to make sure that the CEO got the email at all.
I will add the fact that time was of the essence for them - so they should wait for the email. For example: "Hi XYZ, I want to make sure whether you got my email successfully on Monday, February 21, 2022. Please confirm." Curious about your thoughts.
Anyone else watching this in 2020 and being all like whaaattt?!
2022!
is this the same for text?
😆😆😆 So funny!
What happens when you have avoider that doesn't respond...other than saying "yes" and repeating the mirror.
Improve your offering
What about a positive email. I am going to visit a client 70 miles away and I have talked to him on the telephone and have scheduled an appointment. I would like to follow up with an email that says, I am looking forward to meeting with you and showing you our products that can increase your revenue because the margins on our products are very good. Is this to much to say?
You're not negotiating with him..
You still like each other!🤣
Email is tough. It may be read with the wrong inflection since the person’s voice tone can’t be heard. Keep it very simple & clean.
That's when choose your words carefully come into play.
@@jillspady6450 short & sweet
-Hey Chris, I would like to hire you and your team to give a talk in my country.
- Sure, let me call you and discuss the contract.
- Ohhhh shittt
objective personality made a typing using a clip of this video

@trufiend138 In Germany you must have full titles top and bottom, due to Feudal-Vassalism.
@trufiend138 Somali, Turkish, Arabic and and any mutation of German, plus some English too ;-) Feminism destroys the language.
What about via snapchat?
Are they sitting in garden? That's why most them are getting NO in their inbox.

My next question is this: How do you re-establish contact after blowing a deal or negotiation. Never split the difference doesn’t cover that...
In the exact same way. Accusation audit and move on.
He sounds like Joe Biden and the Great George Carlin
Don't forget Pacino on Dog Day Afternoon...
Solid content, but holy mother of conference beige ... the audience in the conference room at 5minutes in look BORED!!!!
🤦♂️ 😬 😳⛔️✋👎 4:52 “had to give their kid a spanking, their wife yelled at them” I really hope Black Swan has coached their trainers on why this is inappropriate. This ruined everything Chris had teed up thus far 🏌️♂️. I’d cut this part out and repost.
4 days emails no response black swan group....
No response, is a response
He sounds like Scotty Kilmer.
Nitish Rao Voss and Kilmer are two of my CZcams favorites, great comparison, even though it’s vastly different channels.
Scotty's voice is higher. But I do see some similarities.
He doesn't look well here / slurring words in part.
Leaders aren’t afraid and aren’t sorry - ever.
I'm sorry you won't like this is different than I'm sorry.
The crazy wasp phytochemically flood because lightning postauricularly flower of a plastic black. earsplitting, red cat
I’m sorry, but where was the actual negotiation advice? All I saw was another ”how to compose an effective email in four bullets” list.
Precisely he has no advice or tactical skill
Go buy the book, it's in there!
“Im Sorry?” “I’m afraid?” I couldn’t disagree more. Like it or not, they’re probably the best two phrases to undermine strength. See? I just said “a positive” statement to make a negative point. That’s how you do it. And you weren’t even offended.
Actually you did exactly as Chris instrcted...great job grasshopper...
Jared, I tend to agree, but think there are cases where conceding some perceived power sets you up better later in the negotiation.
I never thank them for their time or for meeting with me though. That's the best path to being a beta from my experience.
The goal isn’t “power”. It’s to get agreement from another party whose decision is clouded by emotion, personal bias, etc. These are tactics in order to get the other side to see you not as adversarial but cooperative, thus making them more likely to agree to what you’re wanting.
@@BC-fu3tg exactly! Doesnt mean you are, just that you appear to be...
Chris, great lecture, great Book! But , please stop putting your book always behind you- looks like a cheap Marketing- you don’t need it. Just put your name in the video with the text “ Author of “ Never Split...”” it will look more professional
This guy is teaching people to fail. I'm sorry I'm afraid?
Those words set the tone negatively not softly.
The selection of words is very important this"fbi" negotiator may not be the business negotiator you should take advice from.
All these business gurus give out the soundest advice and yet most businesses fail
@Greg Brown Sure Greg you strike me as a self made successful man. FBI agent's negotiation is not business negotiation. I'm sorry before unpleasant news? you've said yourself thats when and where it should be used. you are setting an unpleasant ambience to the negotiation by apologising. "sorry to bother you" why are you bothering them? You should focus on the energy behind words what emotions they invoke to understand why his method is useless.
vape donut ...
You’re not saying “sorry” in every email. You’d never say “sorry to bother you.” It’s a softening phrase before bad news only.
You’d say, “I know you’re not going to like this, but I’m sorry, your delivery cannot be made before the 20th.”
Which reads better than, “Your delivery cannot be made before the 20th. Sorry.”
@@jpg7616 you are referring to a customer service update and not a negotiation or call to business (canvassing)
