  • In this video I got into a bit of an in-depth discussing about how Mounting works in Monster Hunter World. Or at least how I think it works... and as someone who's mounted a lot of Monsters (don't even dare...) I'm pretty sure I'm right.
    This title is currently available on PS4, Xbox One.

    Couple of things:
    1. You can relocate once you get the prompt to do your finisher.
    2. The Bow also has a charge up for its finisher.

    To me mounting isn't about doing a lot of damage during but setting up for breaks and damage later. The point is knocking them down and weakening a specific area with little to no damage to the party. It gives a breather to those not mounting and time to set up the next big assault. But if you can use the time to pile on a ton more damage for free then that is good too. Just in general mounting is about making the fight easier as now the monster is focused on knocking you off rather then attacking anyone else.

      Gillan Dale Arts you actually make it worse if you flash the monster down. Let the mounter do his thing because we hate when you guys ruin our hard work. The window period for damage is like 2x or 3x longer than a flash. Spend that time sharpening or buffing. Thank you!

      Our team uses the time one of us mounted to sharpen, buff, lay bombs or traps, etc. We’ve made the 15 minute mark on several hunts this way.

      Totally agree with you on this. Maybe hit the monster 2-3 times at the start of mounting then use the spare time to sharpen, craft, buff etc.

    Great video. One extra Tid bit. With the charge blade, when you have phials stored and you do the mounting finisher, it does the Super Amped Element Discharges full damage with out consuming all of your Phials. This means when the monster is down you can follow it up with another Super Amped Element Discharge. Just something for my Charge Blade users out there to keep in mind.

      I know for me once either your hunter rank hits a certain point or you advance the story so far those controls go away and the game does not tell you anymore. At that point you just have to know when to brace and when to move on the monster.

    Can you do a video on Status effects next? (Dragon, Poison, Para, Blast, Sleep // Exhaust, Enrage, Stun :/)
    How to trigger them
    Best Weapon (type) Options
    Related Armor Skills
    Diminishing returns (Damage req for 1st, 2nd 3rd proc)
    Stuff like that. I've been looking for info on them, but came up blank.

    • @CrippledMenace
      @CrippledMenace Před 6 lety

      you trigger them by hitting them

    • @PongzeLor
      @PongzeLor Před 6 lety +3

      A little short on status.
      Status has a %chance to proc. I think it's somewhere around 33% or 25% per hit.
      Logic would say that you want a fast weapon because proc chance is per hit, but this is offbalanced by the higher status values on slower weapons. For example Greatsword could have 500 poison while SnS has 300 poison. I don't know which are the best but I use SnS and Lance with Status. Usually I'll just always get a status variant of a weapon because I love paralysis and sleep. IMO you can't go wrong with a status weapon unless the monster is immune/resistant to it.
      As for the armor skills there are one for each and I also believe there is a generic one but I don't have information on that. There is also status crit. There is also an armor set skill that will increase the duration of poison (and thus also the total damage dealt). I believe it is on pink rath.
      For diminishing returns you first need to know that in order to apply a status, you must fill a bar to 100%. At first the bar may have a value of say 100 poison. After applying the status the bar will increase by a number say 60. Through this process you will poison the enemy after applying 100 poison damage, 160 poison damage, 220 poison damage, 280 poison damage etc. until a cap is met, maybe somewhere around 1000.
      Some special notes is that you can start filling the poison bar even while the enemy is poisoned. This is not the case for paralysis and sleep. I've also heard that poison ammo does not follow this rule, but am not 100% on this. I also believe paralysis is much shorter on specific monsters if they are enraged.
      For personal preference, I'll get a slime/blast weapon whenever I can, but I'll start off with a poison weapon because of the availability. This is because I believe poison does not break body parts while blast does. For paralysis vs sleep I tend to go for paralysis weapons online since many new players do not understand what the sleep mechanic is, so it is usually wasted online. Also Paralysis is much better with a team than by yourself. For solo or high/g-rank the sleep bombing is nice and allows a moment of peace to sharpen and heal without wasting damage potential during a paralysis.

    Helpful tip. You can just hold r2 the entire time you are mounted so that when you need to brace yourself you only have to worry about not tapping the attack button. It also seems that, at least with the glaive, you can change position and get some damage in instead of bracing yourself and you won’t lose stamina.

    The whole point behind knocking the monster down instead of letting the mount finish. Keep in mind that the mounting knockdown I believe knocks them down for longer than a standard knockdown, giving a longer time for you to all in wail on it.
    Personally I feel that when a monster is mounted everyone should be doing prep for the knockdown instead of attacking. Rebuff with Demon, sharpen weapons, Charge Phials. Everything that you need to do to put out top DPS in that window do it when the monster is being taken care of by your teammate.

  • @riftis2210

  • @PhantomO01
    @PhantomO01 Před 5 lety

    Great video. I think it’s better to not damage the mob while it’s mounted. Here’s why, each successful mount ends with knocking the mob over, and you have a 3 point crit for the mountee, then the mob is knocked over for 5-8 secs. So while the mob is mounted, the other party members should sharpen/ heal. Then be prepared to let loose on the mob when it’s knocked over.
    If someone has the paralysis element in your party, i’ve see it often proc often when the mob is knocked over. For me, I think it’s better to let the mountee finish, while the 3 others prepare to unleash hell.
    Also when the mob is knocked over, you gain better access to their weak points, leaving them defenseless.

  • @LMBRJAK91
    @LMBRJAK91 Před 6 lety

    This is my first MH game so I don't know previous game experience but I main Insect Glaive and I think mounting has a cooldown essentially. Where after a mount occurs there is a time period where you can't build up mounting damage as you said with diminishing returns. I theorize that the mounting damage threshold is a constant but the time between those thresholds increase with each successive mount.

  • @bobbbbEE
    @bobbbbEE Před 5 lety

    One thing I would say is that for most flying wyverns, breaking their back is really tough because you always end up hitting their wings instead. Many weapons (I'm sure) can utilize the mounting finisher to deal good damage to the back but as a charge blade user, when you are on their back, the mounting finisher uses axe mode so the reach ends up hitting their head instead. If you aren't able to break their back with a mounting finisher (also, if the mounting finisher by chance doesn't happen), there's a very reliable way to break their backs. If you mount them, get on their back and wait for them to try and smash against a wall and don't attack them (this ensures that the monster doesn't tire too quickly). After 3 or 4 smashes, their back is virtually guaranteed to break, and if you don't attack them this should be possible with only one mount.

    There is an easier way instead of checking the mini-map. The button prompts at the top right corner, it will highlight [Brace] or [Move] when the monster is going to do stuff. Just pay attention to the top right button prompt (even in this video, it is visible.)

    Hey Rurikhan.
    I'll advocate for letting the mounter do his finisher, unless your timer is about to run out. Depending on your party, everyone would have something they could do in the meantime, seeing that the monster is unable to target them specifically when trashing about. As a party member you should consider sharpening, getting a demon powder buff ready, or as a bow user get into position for some sweet dragon piercer attacks, etc. Sure the dps dips a bit, but my money is on that the you'll make up for it in buffs and such when it's down. Sharpness has a damage modifier when blue or higher, so use that breathing room. :)

    • @PongzeLor
      @PongzeLor Před 6 lety

      Somewhat agreed.
      It's best to take care of some business before swarming on the monster, like sharpening weapons. IMO take care of business, but don't just let the rider finish, go and do some damage with your newly sharpened sword. It does feel really bad to get knocked off the monster though.

    • @solidcake482
      @solidcake482 Před 6 lety

      You shouldn't stop attacking to "let" them do their finisher, it's everyone's hunt and everyone's kill. Do what you need to do, then go in and attack the monster. Whoever drops it first drops it first, and dps goes up during mount because the monster can't fight back as effectively against the rest if the team

      You should consider that mounting counts as an ailment with diminishing factors. If you waste it, thats just too bad. I'm not going to tell you how to play your game, but this is how i play with my squad, and this is key in getting an extra advantage. FYI blue sharpness equals +25% damage.

    • @solidcake482
      @solidcake482 Před 6 lety

      Christian Bæhr I'm aware of sharpness boosts, that's why I said to do what you need to THEN jump in and attack. You should consider that mounted attacks do 1 damage until the finisher, which does maybe 1 good heavy attack worth of damage depending on the weapon, and then knock the monster down. Whereas if you attack while it's mounted, the others get multiple heavy hits in on weakpoints while it thrashes blindly and then, if they knock it down, it's still stunned for follow-up attacks. Maybe not for quite as long as a mounted finisher, but the extra damage more than makes up for it. Plus, if they don't do enough to knock it down, then you get bonus damage AND the mounted knock out. Just no point in laying off the monster unless you're using items or trying to capture

      @Baehrman87 Před 6 lety

      Point taken. Then again, my squad and i don't exactly stop attacking, we just sort out our stuff, then attack waiting for the mounter to call out when it's close to the finisher. You can tell as the mounter by watching the minimap eyeball thingy.

  • @azurio3182
    @azurio3182 Před 6 lety +8

    all is well if my teammates get the monster down by attacking, while im mounting. All is NOT well when they flash the monster when im mounting! it completely ruins the knockdown. Flashpods is not a knockdown, its more like a temporary ailment that last only a while. Real knockdowns last much longer. So whoever flashes a monster while someone is mounting it, i wouldn't play with.

    As an insect glaive user, I usually don't stay in one spot while mounting, and take advantage of the bonus cartwheel.
    Also I've noticed that monsters that have a severable tail (including Rathalos, most likely it was the camera keeping you from mounting there, it can mess with your attack directions sometimes) have three mounting areas: head, back, tail, while monsters with only breakable tails only have two: head, back

  • @illusion756

    Hmm suppose I can pitch in as well Rurikhan. Theres a third thing the monster can do, but it's mostly for Brute wyverns: Anjanath, Barroth, Deviljho, pretty anything that has a lovely pair of legs.
    They'll leap halfway across the map, and the stamina draining spots are both their back as well as their head so you have to hold on more often than not.
    Also don't blame ya for not mentioning it since they're so underappreciated, but hunting horns you also have to hold triangle for your mounting finishing.
    Last thing though might need more research on it, but during a mount sometimes you'll find someone with a para weapon. If the monster gets paralyzed don't get off. You can still dig in with your knife, and when the para finishes usually you can still get your mount finisher as well so it's kind of like TWO mounts for the price of one!
    Hope this ain't too long, in the end mounting is nuts, during a radobaan hunt I got 3 mounting finishers in one rodeo, other times I get none. It's not 100% consistent but that keeps it interesting.

If I'm mounting and the monster takes off down a path I'll move to a different part of the monster and it seems to stop in it's tracks. Makes it easier for my teammates to continue attacking.

    • @Zetro_Hermit
      @Zetro_Hermit Před 6 lety +3

      From what I've noticed when I was mount crazy with S&S, depending on how many 'ticks' of stamina damage the move the monster is using causes while bracing, (some of them just go NUTS trying to get you off), you spend either more or less stamina to move than if you had just braced (either way its very minimal stamina).
      It does have the desired effect. However, if you move too soon when the monster is about to bash itself on something to get you off, it will actually cancel the monster bashing himself. Depending on whether you wanted more dagger stabs, or just want your finish ASAP, you can manipulate this mechanic.

    I havent seen a video about this one but when mounting there is a chance for you to stay on if the monster kept standing intead of falling over then you can start stabbing again and doing your mount finisher on the monster, there are chances that you can get a double, a triple, quadriple or even pentuple mount finishers if you are lucky... This happened to me multiple times

    Late to the party, but been playing MHW recently, and wanted some clarification on the whole mounting thing, as I've never been able to properly grasp what I'm supposed to do up there. Thanks! I've heard about a thing people call 'wallbanging', though, which as far as I can gather is basically making the monster crash into a wall to stun itself? Is that new to Iceborn, or is it just something you've decided not to cover in this clip?
    Also: I've been playing with my girlfriend, who uses the insect glaive. Up until recently, I used the charge blade.... but she had a REALLY bad habit of always mounting the monster and steering it out of my path every single time I managed to get my double buffed combo up, right before I could hit with my finisher! I have now started using the longsword instead, and it is suddenly much less of an issue, as combos are a bit easier to set up, and it's not as big of a deal when one is interrupted.

  • @PongzeLor
    @PongzeLor Před 6 lety

    The SnS mount finisher does KO damage so I usually end on the head. As for the mounting process I just hit and move as much as I want then when I see the finisher is ready I move to the head (or tail to sever) and triangle.
    Also was it just me or does the bowgun mount finishers feel absolutely weak in comparison to the others?
    ALSO apparently you said there is a mount chance %? I believe this is incorrect and mount is actually applied just like every status and break. You fill the mount bar and when it reaches 100% you get a mount. As you mount more and more the mount threshold goes up by some value.

    For the SA the finisher actually is pretty important. The elemental discharge finisher increases the special gauge to max (or close to max depending on the axe) and allows access to Zero Sum Discharge almost immediately. Even if not gained with the mount, a few heavy attacks will always unlock it and allow some serious ailment/elemental/raw phial damage. All I know is when people flash pod kushala when I mount it I get TRIGGERED AF.

    I use dual blades. People should know, when you mount it's not about focus on one are but building up almost a type of charge. If you do enough it sets secondary demon mode. And does a barrel roll up and down the entire monster with the blades. Usually breaking 3-4 of the monsters body parts off.
