The only issue i have with people calling "diff" left and right is that the people who say it are usually the worst person on the team
exactly, usually good players try to help or advise during the game.
Idk, it depends I’ve seen it from both ends of the spectrum
Guy I play with who is always the worst on our team always says “diff”. Buts it done on purpose, he knows he’s trash and that’s the point 😅
I do it to insult the enemy dps mid match and get in their heads.
I never use it against teammates even if it’s true or the end of the match, you get nothing from hurting team morale.

Balanced, yin and yang.
What is not wholesome about racial slurs in an online multiplayer shooter?
Ahh yes the classic fps experience 😳
I think the main issue is that banning words does nothing to counter toxicity. Is the word diff used by people being toxic? Yes. Will banning it reduce toxicity? No.
This.
It's not just used by toxic people, either. My friends and I use it as jokes basically.
There are more that use it to be toxic tho8gh, of course. That'll never change. Can't change human nature
There is no end to progression
@@DarthMajora factual
Why do you care if it's banned or not if it makes no difference?
People are always going to come up with a word or phrase to call their teammates bad. It’s impossible to stop it as long as chat exists. (also, you can turn off the chat too) :D
they should remove chat from this game completely. no reason to be typing at all. if you want to communicate, should be voice chat only, or pings, and anyone who says anything that is NOT relevant to the game in voice chat, should be instantly permabanned. Thats how it should work.
basically, in comp, the chat isnt there to be typing shit like "diff" this "diff" that. That, in itself, is throwing. I don't have a problem with the word "diff" per se, but I do have a problem with people flaming, because they are no better than trolls, or bad players, they are JUST AS MUCH a detriment to the team's chances of winning. Typers/flamers/trolls, are all of a piece.

I'd take "gg ez" or "diff' over having someone on your team call you or other teammates "dogshit" or racial slurs or something like that any day.

Gg ez is probably unproblematic toxicity cus that happens when the match is over. Saying Diff during a match can activately cause tilt

100% if diff gets banned, something else will take its place. People are already using gap, which I think is actually a stronger term to use. I do think a better option is having a client/user side feature allowing players to block key words or phrases from being visible on their end.

Something that people don't seem to be mentioning is that when you give the user control over their own chat filtering it's impossible for bad actors to know exactly what your filter looks like. Thus substantially deterring people from filterpassing.
As soon as you add a word to a global blacklist, everyone who used to use it is just going to rebel and get around it, increasing the actual toxicity on the platform.

If some stranger typing gg ez or whatever diff in chat is actually hurting your feelings that bad you need to stop playing competitive games. That’s just being soft. It’s pathetic that people can’t take any kind of criticism anymore.
If someone says dps diff to me and I’m actually doing bad on dps I’m gonna try to play better or do my best to catch up as much as possible. And if they’re saying dps diff even when I know I’m not the problem, I either point out what I’ve done and what they haven’t or I ignore it bc I know I am not the person in the wrong.
It’s crazy to me that people are bothered by this shit. I grew up on cod. Og modern warfares and black ops 1 and 2. WILD shit was said every other game. Yet nobody was ever really bothered by it. Turn off Orange chat, keep blue chat on.
As someone who generally dislikes trash talk and the like, banning words is very obviously not the solution. It doesn't really fix the "issue" nor is it an issue that can ever really be fixed.
Fr people really think they could control fundamental aspects of human/cultural nature by banning the word "diff". Lmao
it can't be fixed but reduced for sure. toxicity comes from anger and anger in games comes from injustice most of the time. stuff like bad hitboxes or poor balancing those things are subjective and you will never get everyone to be happy... but unless someone is delusional they have a right to be angry with something.

There's the very straight-forward question of why some are even allowed at all, regardless of filter setting.

I take Diff as more of a compliment. If diff means, "someone sucked" it always means "someone rocked" and I choose to look at it as the latter option.
TLDR: Diff is a compliment
Came here to post exactly this. It's such a benign phrase compared to any number of things one can say to be toxic. It calls out somebody for being weak while simultaneously complimenting somebody for being that much better. Is it that much of a psychological attack to people when you are told you are not as good at the game as somebody else? All that means is there is room to improve..maybe you're not as good as you think you are; if some silver tank thinks he belongs in diamond but every single game he gets tank diffed, i'd like to think one day maybe a light will turn on in his brain that some improvements are needed.
3:37 The realization was just too perfect lol
There is a benefit to targeting stuff like this, if a certain behavior comes under attack it does diminish it. It may move to a different phrase but the feeling that there are consequences is something that could make a real difference. The phrase "punish one, to correct one hundred" comes to mind. Target the behavior, even if that means using a phrase that is connected to it as a route.
Don't know if that experience mentioned is specific to silver btw, I see it constantly in plat.
nah it's totally retaded. what you actually need to do is to raise people not like whining pussies getting offended by every virtual meaningless shit on the web.

You think this applies to differential too cause I use that sometimes too
I was told, by my own team, "Kiriko diff" in a game where the enemy team didn't even have a Kiriko. Still to this day I'm unsure if they were just dumb or if that was the sickest burn in history.
It _could_ be interpreted as "We won/lost because we had a Kiriko, and the enemy did not," I suppose.

I find that because I am unsure of the ranks of my teammates , its hard to tell if the match maker is matching us due to rank , or just because it is matching low queue times. I play as gold 1 , but had 2 games with a pharah that could not float. Player got flamed hard, but I reckon , that player was not gold. Rather , match maker is just filling a DPS slot.

They shouldn't Ban words but I would love to see them do more things like when people type "Easy" and it turns to "Mommy say people my age shouldn't suck their thumb"
i thought i had Terraria running in the background, love the seemingly random background music
Banning words won't fix this problem, but no matter the outcome of a huge amounts of my games lately many of them end with someone on one of the teams saying "___ diff". Every time I see it I roll my eyes no matter who it was directed at and more than half the time it seems completely random what roll gets called out. This is especially frustrating when it was a fun close game only for it to be soured right at the end.
They already shadow banned "GG Too EZ" in pubs/ranked
So you gotta say it backwards ez gg or some variation of it.

Just me who feel "diff" reduces more serious toxicity. Like instead of making long rants and very specific attacks, people just say "x diff" which is easy to ignore
There will always be something else for them to complain about, best to just stop catering to people who at this point probably just need chat disabled entirely
honestly the best thing is to turn off the chat completely until you're not tilted anymore, worked for me
I once had an opposing tank say "Tank diff damn gg" like it's not ALWAYS negative lol
Diff might not inherently be "toxic", but I have definitely seen it used in ways where it could be considered toxic behavior. It's a way of calling someone out for being either good or terrible in comparison to how others have played, some people tend to take it to the extreme.
That said, before the word Diff was even a thing people would literally just directly call you out for being bad by name, so really not much has changed its just a fad word you see a lot making the phrase stand out. I personally hate the phrase just because I think it sounds dumb to say, it's never really bothered me though.
People should simply try not getting so upset about things. Think about all the things YOU yourself can control when you might be getting frustrated with someone else's language or behavior. Stop relying on daddy Blizzard or anyone else to swoop in and save the day. Mute people that are obnoxious, turn off match chat, or walk away from the game for a bit. This is now a free to play team based hero shooter that is getting shitty levels of attention from the developers, so you should expect now more than ever for people to trend toward toxicity.
Well said. People need to learn the skill of letting go. A deep breath and a sight, before you erase your responce from the match chat and just mute the person annoying you. Its not easy, but it does help in the long run.
@@tatuvarvemaa5314 It doesn't start out being easy, but I would argue that it is a behavioral and repetition thing that makes it easier as you go on.

Why aren’t we allowed to avoid more than 3 people and why only for 7 days?
i tried playing overwatch again recently, flex queued because i miss not needing to select my role before a match, got tank, picked roadhog, enemy rein said "tank diff" after killing me once and we won the match later on.
