- My method for making reflectix window coverings for a vehicle. NO Velcro, tape, suction cups, buttons, magnets, elastic...you get my point, necessary. Reflectix stays in place by itself when you have a good template of your window.

Great job! Do you think the reflective surface facing out would be better for keeping temperature down (as I guess black absorbs heat rather than reflecting it?
The only purpose of these (for me) is privacy.
@@RachelinRealLife they are great. I just got a new car and the temperatures here in the Uk look set to reach 40 to 42degc (in a country where almost nobody has aircon in the home) so this should help keep my car cooler without having aircon permanently on in it
I understand your pain; I was in Germany for some time and didn't have any AC. Opening the windows would just let mosquitoes in 😕
Didn't really showt the one with the window .is she look thru black material or did she put screen in it?
@@sunnygram3850 screen is there
Good video thanks. If you cut some holes in your paper template you can lay tape over the hole and it will hold firmly to your glass while tracing.
Thanks! Great tip
Wish I had read this comment first
If you lightly mist the window with water, the paper will stick long enough to trace around the outline. Don't use enough to get the paper soggy.
Great tip!
GENIUS! I could not get any tape to stick to my parchment paper so I'm going to give this a try! Thanks for the idea! 😊
Thank you so much for your advice!! Very helpful 💜
Yours is the best way to do it. I’ve watched so many people make window coverings for their vehicles. I think yours is going to work for my car. I’m going right now to buy all the things that you I’ve already got the reflective. Just need to get the other items.
4:30 Why not trace on the outside?
Just a thought. Use guitar picks to press into the gaps at the edge of the window to hold the shade in place.
Young lady , you are brilliant ! Thanks for the video !
Personally I don't like the combo of heat in the vehicle and the vinyl plastic causing gassing off and really stinking up the car. I appreciate your heads up about the value of plastic for dealing with window moisture/condensation, which made me think of ripstop nylon which deals with moisture pretty well as a possible alternative for someone that doesn't like gassing off vinyl. A little harder to work with maybe, but what I will try. Vinyl does add some heft and insulation value to the reflectix though. . . . I always wanted to get one of those contour gauge things and try that rather than freezer paper. It's a little different help though.
Thank you for the detailed instructions! My husband thinks I'm nuts, but I so want to go car camping this summer. I'm thinking of preparing now, and taking off on my own for a weekend or week. Now I know what my project can be during my Spring Break! 😁
My pleasure! Hope your adventures are awesome! Your hubby will be jelly😁
Me too. We need an app to meet like minded! ❤
go girl go .so much to see and not to see lol.its alot of fun.im a full timer van lifer.it fits for me because I v got nobody except my faithful road dog and we love it . whether it's cruising or just chilling in a parking lot for a week or wherever..just fun and free. we all have our rules we live by out here .but whatever you do always becareful and safe .that's the first rule .ok .good luck have fun .from Myrtle Beach
You are nuts
This was SO HELPFUL
My covers turned out great
Thank you for your tutorial. I have a van I want to go camping in and did not know how to fix window coverings for it. I've tried curtains, I've tried other things, nothing worked well. This looks like a great solution. Blessings!
I appreciate the fact that you show the previous shade you made and the mistakes you experienced with them.
I used to be a picture framer, so I have frequently worked with spray adhesive. I recommend that you spray on a surface like the gravel instead of on the picnic table. The overspray that you get onto the picnic table will attract dust pollen, dirt, seeds, insects, etc. that will make an unpleasant experience for other picnic table users.
I was thinking the same thing
That is a super smooth table top !
Good job Rachel! Would it be easier to trace the rear window using from the outside first? Then cut it and bring it inside and do the final fit because the pattern from the outside will be much larger than the inside. Thus, it gives you extra edge to trim down to the right inside. But what ever works best for you is the way to go!😉 Catch you later!
That's a great option to try!
that's not a bad idea, I appreciate the tip. I'm gonna try it that way
I have found the outside window measurements are different from the inside.
I am going to try outside first, it makes sense, as I am a few minutes
( December 1, 2022 ) away from launching this endeavor....
Thank you.... 👍
@@Tonyconner74 how did this end up working out for you?
I am so glad I ran into your video. I was going to use black paint on the reflectix when you mentioned it peels and flakes. Really love how you developed the pattern and type of black fabric to glue on outer side. You save me money and frustration so I can put window covering on my vehicle.
My favorite part of the video is the joy you had when the project fit as planned! I appreciate your attention to detail.
Great job! One of the easiest DIY window coverings I've seen.
I've watched soooo many window cover videos. This is the best up-to-date demo. 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 I'm a shimmy pro with my current wonky reflectix/fabric panels. Grrrr. So much time spent fitting them in place. I'm going to try new ones with your technique and products. I liked the ideas for staying the paper to the window for tracing! Great tips! I'm going to try to use Press N Seal food wrap and trace the outside like MO Bang suggested. Lots of value in this video and comments! Thank you Rachel!
I painted mine with Dupli-color fabric paint. It is flexible comes is several colors and it hasn't flaked.
She seemed to have the cloth to help with moisture / wipe away. Awesome idea though.
Nice work Rachel ! awesome fit ! Black out privacy window coverings , the reflective material is what you used for structural purposes ... nice option ! In real life it also amazes me how great your lovely , gorgeous straight hair looks ... especially when living on the road in a vehicle ...
Pull tab was smart!
Thanks for sharing! I would insert some velcro in just the right places instead of fabric. You can then use the velcro to fold up the shade concertina/accordian style .
Excellent video. Thank You! I'm going to use your technique when I make my window covers this week. I really like the simplicity of your method (as compared to others that end up sewing the outer edges). Really appreciate your guidance 😀🚐
This is awesome. Thank you for this no sew alternative.
Amazing. I have the reflectex cut out...got the black cloth...but had no idea about how to bring it all together. Until I found your video. Enjoyed the watch too. Thank you!
Great job, Rachel!
Beautiful job--and I fully intend to copy. Thank you!
Best example for car windows, love the mosquito mesh, gonna do that for my SUV!
I had some furniture delivered and part of the packaging were sheets of about 5/16 the inch styrofoam. I glued this styrofoam to one side of the reflectix to increase its R value ( some). I came across thin sheets of fabric like black paper and glued it to the styrofoam side. This is the "stealth" side. The result of doing this , which I like, is that the panels are rigid. The styrofoam does help as I did an experiment and the difference in heat transmission was quite noticeable.
Same here! It works great for extra climate control and sound deadening. I was even able to use some of the shipping foam sheet for little knee pads and floor mats for my van.
I found your channel when I was looking for a how to do reflectix and your channel came up. Thank you so very much for posting this vlog. Take care.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Rachel for this very useful video
Of all the videos I've watched, I think I like your black fabric method the best! Seems to make it a bit sturdier and more insulated. Thanks!
Great video, thank you for sharing your ideas, big hugs from MN
sooooo helpful! Gonna do this for my 2017 sorento!
great guide! thank you for showing the whole process, a lot of other skip the tracing part and that was one of the biggest questions I had. Also thank you for the tips about the materials you used, so helpful!
Good Job Rachel!
Parchment! Great tip! Thx
Great video! Thanks, Rachel! Making these for our Honda Odyssey DIY camper van. ;)
The map backing is cool.
Nice job. 👍
You're looking well 🙂
Thanks Bob!

You're welcome 😊
Great idea!! Great job!! Thank you!!
Nicely done.
Thank you this is cleaver! Going on a hiking trip and sleeping in my car 🙌🏽🙌🏽👏👏
Thank you for saving me from spray paint!!! The cloth idea is awesome! Going to make mine today! I was thinking of the pull tab, hopefully it held up because Im going to do the same.
Pull tab is working well!
@@RachelinRealLife III lo
When you use the mesh I didn’t see you do that I don’t know what you’re using could you please reply and tell me what you did I just saw you putting up the silver reflector paper and then opening it up to see mesh I don’t think you showed how to do that or I missed it
this was a great video!
I did something similar with my last car but it's time to make ones for my new car. you had solutions for problems and mistakes I'd made so hopefully I'll do better this time. the pull tabs and peek windows are genius!
Glad to know it helped!!
Nice job! Windows are tough. I kept a window for ventilation running along the top and then crack the window. I then felt SAFE that no one could reach in and open the door.
Great how to video. I have to make a few templates for my bus windows and your ideas will work for me...Thank you
❤
this rachel seems cool 😎❤
enjoy 👍
"some kind of... something..." I love it :D 😘
Ok, Rachel in real life! Ha! Love it!
I love this.
Very nice screen cutout on the window covering
Great idea a beam wanted to do my windows on my big rig like that
Excellent.
Nice!! These are rad!
Would be a good option for you. If you want to make them, I'll help you.
Excellent video!! Liked, Favorited, AND Subscribed 🙂
Thank you! I ordered my glue and reflectix. Need to look at fabric. I just got a new chevy traverse. Could not find any window coverings. So excited to camp/travel.
Hi Rachel! Great video by the way. I appreciate you taking the time to cover all the bases from materials to construction to previous problems encountered. You've convinced me I don't need tape or spray paint which I'm extremely thankful for. I'm going to take your advice and get the Loctite glue. Do you remember how many cans (or ounces) you used and how many windows (or square feet) it covered? You also mention using the pvc material instead of fabric because of condensation. I was just going to find some cheap fabric at a thrift store and go that route. I'm wondering what exactly the problem was you were having with condensation. Was it the potential for mold, weakening of the glue or something else? Thanks so much in advance and safe travels!
I bit the bullet and got the Weathertech window shade package. It has custom fitted panels for all of my truck's windows, 6 panels. I use the black side facing out and I leave the rear side covers on all time. I always cover the front windows went parked. Keeps people from seeing whats in my truck. Here in the SF Bay area, we have a good amount of car smash and grabs sadly 😢
Love Weathertech products! They're really great quality. I'll be interested to know how they hold up.
@@RachelinRealLife I have a neighbors who has used them on several vehicles for years. He got sick and I had to install and remove them for him. I was really impressed but haven't yet bought any due to the price. However if I wrre going to use my vehicle to camp that is exactly what I 2ould get. They will nit wear out nearly as much as any diy window covers. Probably money well spent!
So good 👏
Glad you think so!
Thank you for making this video thank you God bless you
Thanks for recording this.
I haven't been on this youtube for awhile Hi Rachel looking beautiful!:-) Great idea with the reflectix that stuff is great.
Thanks for the information ☺.
My pleasure!
I really appreciate your vidi it helped me out a whole lot
Awesome!!!👠🚌👠
i used black spray paint 😪. i used the kind thats meant to bond to plastic and its good. i couldnt chip the paint even if i tried. i think as long as you don’t do too many coats, spray paint should be fine. its a paint and primer in one and also has a flat/matte finish. maybe other types are more likely to chip.
What brand of spray paint did you purchase & is it still holding up? In the heat too? Thanks🙏😊
Acrylic exterior paint is very flexible when dry.. almost like a thin sheet of rubber.
it's awesome
I made some for mine that were much the same, but on the inside, I put a layer of thin fabric that matched the color of my interior.
Thanks so much for sharing.....headed to Home Cheap-o-......
I dig it.
Thanks very useful video
Glad it was helpful!
The beginning You made me laugh I needed thank you I’m homeless lol
That opening was so cute. You're like a little kitten
a great cheap fabric for many project is landscape fabric you can get it anywhere and its meant to be used with water. and a great tape is tesa tape
Where was this video shot if you don't mind me asking? That view and camp spot looks amazing! Going to be doing a cross country trip this year and would love to check this place out. Also, thanks for the tips on DIY window coverings.
You have beautiful hands, u can be a hand model! Great job.
Wow, thank you
Hi Rachel. Great video. Would using a large paper clip or hinged dog type clip open the little court out window on your screen.
I am going to do this.
Smart!!
NICE JOB, I WILL BE TRYING THIS ONE MYSELF. THANKS FOR SHARING. I LIKED AND SUBBED YOUR CHANNEL...
Love this! How many yards of the black fabric did you end up using for this project?
Great video. Could you trace the outside of the window instead of inside like they do for tinting?
I found if I made an error when cutting and needed to fill in areas around the edges to seal out light I used foil tape. It adds little more edge as needed.
Great idea Rachael....What a fantastic view out of the back window of snow capped mountains along with wild looking country.....Where is it you live please....Happy New Year from the UK..............
nice info
😊 Thanks
Thanks
Great video...how many feet of fabric/reflectix did you use? Thanks
Hi thanks for the video. Just wanna ask what is the name of the spray glue that you use?
Nice work I was wondering where you did all of this?
Hi Rachel, great video! What is the width of the reflectix you are using? I'm only finding 3 milimeters width reflectix. Do you think it will work for insulation?
You could use a binder clip to keep the flap open
Thanks for making this video. How are these holding up? Have you tried covering one side with duct tape?
Heck id buy any you make for 2018 grand caravan .....id buy precut cardboard ones you made....not even all dolled up reflectix ...
Nothing like custom... I took some off the shelf fold up window shades, seam ripped them, changed the shape to fit my rear windows, then re-sewed the seam. I landed on the metal once, and broke a needle, but got it done... I may add some neodymium magnets inside fabric tabs to keep them even more secure. Simple reflectors work great to reject the radiant heat, and my car stays way cooler!
I'm impressed with the end result. How much did all the materials cost including the stenciling materials?
I'd trace that window from the exterior myself. go a tad over then see how it fits the interior. You can also cut a small hole in the paper with an exacto knife (it won't scratch the window) and use mastic tape to hold the paper in place rather than using tape. in fact just use that same exacto knife to cut the paper!
Love your ideas about reflectix window covers, will the thick black material help with warmth?
If it does, it might only help a little. From my understanding, to work well for insulation, there would need to be two layers with a gap in between.
It seems to me it would have to help.
the reflectix blocks infrared radiant heat loss. The thickness would slow conductive heat loss to a degree, depending on thickness. Gaps (air spaces) enhance conductive insulation, but... much of the heat loss is from the radiant heat, so the conductive heat loss is less a factor.
Great video! I’m having trouble getting the Reflectix to fit snuggly around my rear break light. Any suggestions?
You might need to adhere a small patch to each side of the area that doesn't seal well with a reusable sticky tape. It won't stick so hard you can't remove it but will hold when used.
I LOVE IT! So glad I waited to do mine
Me too!!!!
Velcro would work better all around. You just cut the outline to match with the framing of the window and glue welco to the frame and the contour of the reflectix.
Thanks for this. I use my E350 van for camping during my track weekends. It has a lot of windows so a lot of solar heat gain. I got the idea to cut down windshield shades and was looking for how others might have done it when I came across this video. I had no idea you could buy the material in bulk. Good video and thanks for sharing your techniques. Just curious, tho, why do you put the black fabric on the back?
The black side is for stealth camping/dwelling in the vehicle. Especially for vehicle dwellers in "town" who can't advertise they're inside. Stealthiness is critical for dwelling in (sort of) peace.
