  • Close Calls and Decision Time! Sharing a heart-pounding update as my roller takes her first tumbles, saved by the embrace of tree branches and grass. Grateful she avoided harsh landings on concrete. Join me in reflecting on this rollercoaster moment, and for her safety, I've decided to temporarily lock her up. Stay tuned for more updates and lessons from the skies!

    What do you do with rolldowns and is this a normal thing to happen with rollers

    • @SmokesLoft
      @SmokesLoft  Před 2 lety +2

      I usually just keep them locked up and hopefully down the road they will change their depth. I think it's normal for some rollers where they can't or haven't learn how to control their depth. But in this case I'm not sure if these roll downs will ever change that behavior. Pretty much what I think about roll downs. Maybe other people who has experience with rollers in a long time can give their thoughts. Cheers brother 👍

  • @rasgardenandpoultrypigeons2048

    They don’t usually correct the behavior and end up milking themselves. Most roller guys get rid of them. Some breed them to birds that are not deep.

      I agree with you. Unfortunately she got taken by the hawk.

    Think there's ever been a incident where a bop followed a roll down all the way???.......(bonus thought) then snatched em up.???

      I've seen where they snatch my rollers when they hit the ground. Unfortunately, the hawk took that tiger grizzle.

    Can a hawk catch your birds?

    • @SmokesLoft
      @SmokesLoft  Před 2 lety

      Yes. Hawks can determine which is the weakest or vulnerable and aim for their prey.

    • @marvin2977

      Oh, I have Turkish tumblers I’m scared to fly them cause of hawks, if you got tips for me I’d gladly appreciate it!

    • @SmokesLoft
      @SmokesLoft  Před 2 lety

      @@marvin2977 yeah we are all afraid to fly our birds because of Hawks. Depends on what are you trying to do with your pigeons. As for me I fly my pigeons to determine which ones are going to be the best in my loft and breed them. So If I fly them and a few get taken by the hawk I have to accept that. To help avoid hawk issue you can try timing when they are by the area and put shinny object around your loft to see if that helps. Also the health of your pigeon is important. Keep them healthy and strong so they can avoid being caught. But if you feel it's not safe to fly them, trust your gut. Hopefully this helps my friend

    These birds are having seizures mid-flight and it’s unethical to selectively breed them for these traits.

      You are allowed to express your opinion. However, this statement of roller pigeons having "seizures" goes way back to the 19th century. This theory has since been proven wrong. Their are studies that they have attempted to give Epilepsy reducing drugs to the birds. The result didn't change, the pigeons continued to roll as normal. Also how can you explain the fact that roller pigeons will roll in unison alot of the time too. The truth of the matter is that in England they had selectively bred these pigeons that would tumble in the air and eventually became rollers.

    • @AR-ml1yi
      @AR-ml1yi Před 2 měsíci

      This comment has been scientifically proven wrong. The theory that pigeons have seizures data back to the 19th century. Their have been studies done where they have given pigeons antisezure drugs and the result is they it did not change any fact that the pigeons continued to roll just the same as before. The truth as to why these pigeons roll is through selective breeding the rolling acrobatics back in England.
