After enduring prolonged inclement weather, I can now commence training my 2024 roller pigeons. The initial rounds of training were marred by losses to the Cooper's hawk, followed by a hiatus due to snow and cold conditions lasting a couple of weeks. I'm optimistic that my birds can resume their progress from where they left off.

Thanks a lot bro! I bred and lost lots of good ones to the hawk in March. So, I'm a bit behind my schedule for training these young ones. Definitely next year I will have better planning. Hopefully all your birds are doing well bro. 👍

Well smokes how long have you got them young birds flying for you.... they look like there a bit all over the place..
The majority of them are young ones about 3 months. A lot of the older ones were taken by the hawk earlier in the spring and haven't been giving them a lot of air time. 🙂
@@SmokesLoft i know that you have a serious issue with the hawks and falcons... it's becoming a bit of a problem here in Ireland for the last few years... but what can we do because the powers that be only want to protect them...

Very nice breeders you have there. I noticed that the plywood on the main loft floor is peeling. What I have down on my loft floor is mineral roofing paper, I use it upside down. It protects the floor and I can scrape it and sweep very easy. Works very well as long as I dont dig in with the edged of the scraper. It can last at least 2 years easily. Learned this from an old timer homer racer.

So they were not too bad. They kit well and roll. I did get a good hen that spin really good but not out of these. I crossed with ruby and turner. I think red bar grizzles work best if you want to get some rubies. And I have only one pure ruby roller left that rolls really well. 🙂

how do you train them? I have a bunch of pigeons but cannot get them to fly. I let them out and they just chill on top of the lofts
Depends on the type of pigeon you have. Some will just fly house to house. Some will just chill. Older birds tend to just chill. What you can try is take a flag and spook them to see if they can fly. 🙂

I think you might be right. I believe she laid two first and then 2 more a week later. That explain the other two being fertile. I honestly didn't expect that. Thanks for the help 🙂

Is it possible that you had another hen in your Loft that didn't have a partner.. That would explain the extra eggs
Unfortunately, I do not. I have 5 pairs in this loft and all of them are back on eggs. All of the males are really territorial as well. Thanks for helping. 🙂
@@SmokesLoft yup no problem.. I've never had birds lay more than 2 eggs but I've had birds raise more than 2 young
