  • Always Board Never Boring has his complaints about Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord, but in general he thinks they are really good expansions, and he has a soft spot for them thanks to nostalgia. In this video he shares his top 5 reasons why they are worth getting, rather than just skipping ahead to the newer, shinier expansions that have new monsters and miniatures to play with.
    Please note that this video includes an "official" order in which to play the expansions, but there is absolutely no reason you need to adhere to this order. Go nuts.

    To me the only disappointment with these expansions is the monsters are the same sculpts as in the core game; alt sculpts would have been the cherry on the top of otherwise excellent expansions. Glad you made the same point in your video.

      I'm not a fan of painting the same model over and over. It was a bit more forgivable back in the day, but I feel that Avalon Hill could have done more sculpts, especially as they created some additional sculpts during the crowdfunding campaign (although I do appreciate the reason why they didn't use those sculpts).

      Obviously cost reasons. But because you have so many of them I'm less worried about trying to kitbash a few, experiment paint colours, etc.

    • @M-E_123
      @M-E_123 Před 4 měsíci

      I always wanted models for the Spirit Riders & other named characters / special monsters (Witch Lord, Witch Queen, Skulmar, Guardian Gargoyle from Kellars Keep, Skeletons of the Dwarven Kings an Orc Warboss etc.).
      And now since seeing ranged Goblins, Orcs & Skeletons from Against the Ogre Horde, and finding out about the alternate rules for Goblins & Skeletons on the Heroquest App (Goblins can split movement for hit & run attacks - Skeletons can attack diagonally) - and the fact they've now released the Mythic Tier alternate sculpts (which include Skeletons with Shields & Zombies without - suggesting they should have different stats).
      The more I look at it, the more these feel like a missed opportunity to fix the main issue these packs always had -
      not enough enemy variety (for both painting & gameplay).

    To be honest the expansions Keller's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord are just extensions to the main game. The Frozen Horror, The Mage of the Mirror and now The Rising of the Dread Moon expansions are the aftermath games of the main game in Zargon's defeat.

      Seems like we have a similar opinion. I pretty much say exactly the same thing in the video, that the two expansions with the core game feel like a complete experience, and then the game gets a bit "villain of the week" and loses a bit of the cohesive storytelling.

    It would have been nice if they came with figures for the special monsters featured in the quests and a 3D forge, but its fine. I do like how they add new tiles for a stature and bone pile (much like the storm drains and straight stairs from the Game System), even though they are never used in the actual quests. Their inclusion allows for greater options when making your own quests.
    Part of the "tool kit" is also hidden elements that can improve the over all game, namely in Kellar's Keep, you can roll against your Body or Mind. With that little rule, you can open the game up for addtinal actions. For example, you can, as a houserule, make Body checks to move heavy furniture or escape from a Yetti's deadly hug.
    I generally recommend going though all the quest notes making note of each and every special rule, feature or item so they can be used in one's homebrew quests.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před 9 měsíci +1

      When I reviewed the new versions way back when Avalon first released them to retail one of the things I said at the time was they should have made a plastic forge so it was in-line with the other plastic furniture. If they make a "dwarf quest" pack that would be a good opportunity to rectify that mistake.
      I agree it's a good idea to read through all the quest books. They are packed with little ideas, often that only crop up once, for Zargon players to use.

    Christmas of 1989 was a great day! I eagerly bought both expansions when they came out and wasn't disappointed.

      They definitely didn't lock you down to a specific order, but even back in the day playing Kellar's Keep then Return of the Witch Lord always felt like the right order to me. At the end of the core campaign you are told that the Emperor is in immediate peril while the Witch Lord will need time to regain his strength, so it always felt like that was the way to tackle things.

    In the US, both expansions were available on Amazon for $12 each virtually all summer. I expect they'll be on sale again sooner than later. • @taylora8845
    @taylora8845 Před 4 měsíci

    1. I really have to thank you for your videos also, as they really cut through the confusion on where to start. I didn't even know there were downloadable quests available before you crack open the book lol. And with all the Expansion packs, I had my eye on Frost Horror once we finish as a fan of snowy settings, and didn't realize these are meant to go in order. Since these 2 in your review seemed to be the first, I now see that the new "Prophecy of Telos" is mean to squeeze in after Kellers Keep! 2. Another thing though, many discussions come up recommended house rule variants, (like alternatives for character movement instead of dice.) I don't seem to see anything on the Avalon Hill page, but perhaps there are some "official" pages on this.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před 4 měsíci +1

      The unthreatened movement rules were published by Avalon Hill as part of the Into the Northlands downloadable mission, which serves as a prequel to Frozen Horror. If you have access to the app, you will also see some more official variants in there, like skeletons being able to attack diagonally.

      wow, thanks so much. I will def get on the app. I'll have to see what they "allow" when starting out, (like if movement rules can be changed early on etc. Thanks! We hope to start soon, so it's great to know about starting with "A New Beginning" quest etc.. @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před 4 měsíci +1

      They are variants, so not technically part of the rules, and there are no hard and fast rules for implementing them either. You just add in the ones you like whenever you want; HeroQuest is very laid back and flexible in that regard. Almost all players have their own house rules they like to sue.
      I have used unthreatened movement since they published Into the Northlands, just because it speeds up non-combat turns (when there are monsters, you roll the dice for movement as normal). Also, I only let heroes search for treasure once per room, I combine searches for traps and secret doors (as this was the norm in the original European rules) and I implement a little doom counter that will tick up every turn there are no monsters on the board as an incentive for the heroes to keep moving.
      If you use any of the variants in the app, you can toggle them on and off as you want, so you can add them if the game gets easy, and switch them off if it starts to get challenging.

    Fully agree with those 5 reasons... but I would add a sixth one. To play these two expansions, Zargon player do not need to learn too many new rules like in other later expanions like FH or MoM. For me this is also a positive point for them because not every player likes to study many new rules if they only want to play just a new story with their Heroes.

    To me, as a returning player, they are a core part of the Heroquest experience. I couldn’t imagine not playing through them. I’m still waiting for my horde of Ogres though.

  • @carlosbarreto4695
    @carlosbarreto4695 Před 9 měsíci

    When I added the core set of HeroQuest to the cart, I was also wondering if these two expansions were worthy, since they only were adding more of the same monsters. But since the deals were very good (Kellar's Keep for 15.96€ and Return of the Witch Lord for 19.75€), I decided they were worthy.
    That's about 1€ per miniature. And even for those who manage to get the quest book online, the *tiles* aren't something that you can reproduce easily with the same level of quality as the one included in the box.
    In any case... I wish I would have the miniature for the Witch Lord (which I don't have because the crowd funding wasn't made possible to me). All the other expansions contain the miniatures for the final boss.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před 9 měsíci

      Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord do work out as really good value for what they bring to the table.
      I think it would be great if Avalon Hill did a villain pack. It wouldn't have to include every named villain we have ever met, but it could have the Witch Lord, a fancy looking orc for all those different warlords we fight, and a miniature we could use for Sir Ragnar or any special dread warrior. Something that, while not necessarily unique to any given villain, would at least make those villains a bit more special on the tabletop.

    Ahhh classic... I think i might have missed some of those Downloadable Quests though... 🕵
    I was a little disappointed by Kellars Keep, (which I am willing to overlook because everyone needs MOAR ORCS!) due to the some what repetitive nature of the quests. The pieces of Grin's Map are the most disappointing, as they are functionally pointless. Also the final boss is just a slightly improved Gargoyle. Not even a named Gargoyle like Verag... 😢
    But I still love both of these Expansions, and wouldn't trade them (or skip them) for the world. My favorite part of the crowd-funded miniatures was the Witch Lord figure. 🥰

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Grin's map is intentionally vague, but it is a functioning map, and you can use it. I thought it was a pretty neat design, giving some useful hints without openly pointing out every potential danger. It has all the corridors and rooms, shows you which way is north and has a label in runic script which suggests an area of importance.
      I agree the final confrontation could be a bit more special, but I think HeroQuest often stumbles a little when it comes to bosses because there is only so much they can do within the constraints of the game.

      I did do a video on this subject (but looking at it from the other side - new expansions on an old core game). The short answer is yes and no.
      Avalon Hill scaled up the size of the board for the new edition, so tile overlays, tokens, and miniatures are not the same size. Additionally, Avalon Hill's new edition of the game uses the North American rules. If you grew up with the European edition of the game, then you will notice significant differences that also led to differences in the quest maps and special rules.

    I backed this on HasLab, and got the Mythic Tier, which included these two expansions (as long as three new adventures with new figures, minis, classes, etc). Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord are official expansions to 1989's HeroQuest. You forgot to mention that.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před 9 měsíci +4

      I've talked about this on the channel in detail before, but the brief answer is yes and no. Avalon Hill scaled up the size of the new edition, so miniatures and tile overlays are slightly too big for an old board. Also, if you are used to the European rules, Avalon Hill are using the US rules, which are different in a lot of ways. They also changed fimirs to abominations for IP reasons. Other than that, their remakes of the old expansions are pretty much the same.

When I bought the quest packs I wasn't thinking "Bummer, this is just more of what I already have." I WANTED more of what I already had. Avalon Hill scaled up the board and miniatures for the new edition, so everything is a bit larger which can cause issues when using the original board. Also, if you have an original European edition, be advised that Avalon Hill's edition uses the US rules which are quite a bit different.

    At the beginning of lockdown I dusted off my mb games Heroquest and set about upgrading what I had. Using reaper and zealot miniatures to bulk out the game. Kellers keep had one aspect that bothered me. It based on a dwarven setting yet everything was scaled for humans. Skeleton miniatures represented dwarven skeletons for example. With the rerelease I thought it was a real missed opportunity to revamp this box in particular. And yet the likes of the boulder is still a cardboard piece and not a 3D object.

      I'm not worried too much about the boulder being a token, but I think the dwarven forge should have been a terrain element, and they could have added new sculpts for the enemies. That aside, I think they are really good expansions.

    Would you have an opinion based on owning the expansions, why Kellers Keep qould be proced at 17.98 at Game and The RoTWL is priced higher at 24.99. Watch through your content on both expansions, i cane see an obvious reason for the price difference? Wondered what i was missing (prices have been at this since the start of the year)

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The recommended retail price for both expansions is the same. I got them from Game when they were first released and paid £24.99 each. If Game have funky pricing on them now, it's probably to do with their stock levels or perceived interest. Maybe Witch Lord sells better because you get a lot more undead, which are quite limited in the core set. It may be a regional issue.
      In terms of value proposition, both expansions are pretty much on the same level.

    I skipped the expansions for two reasons: First people these days constantly need new stuff. I don't want my players to get bored to fast and give them new Monsters. @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před 6 měsíci

    I have the damned german version of the game, which is infantile in a bad way. So I either buy everything new or just keep the old game and forget about the new version!? I already have a bigger neopren mat and three german expansions. One is the Witch Lord and the other two were about Mages (Citadel models from some colleges of magic, an Orc shaman, and bunch of henchmen.
    I was starting to print my own english version from scratch with all the good stuff from onoine archives, but buying the starter box and expansions may be more "rational", since printing all the cards and assembling and sleving them may cost more time and money than working two hours for 100€/h.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Před 9 měsíci

      The four European expansions are Kellar's Keep, Return of the Witch Lord, Wizards of Morcar and Against the Ogre Horde. Sounds like you have Wizards of Morcar, which included the cool orc shaman. At the moment, Wizards and Ogre Horde haven't been converted to the new version of the game, although it does appear to be on the cards (for Ogre Horde, at least).
      Another thing to think about is that Avalon Hill are now producing all-new content, like the Rise of the Dread Moon expansion and the new hero packs, so it depends if you are interested in sticking with original content or getting into brand new territory with the game.
