Why are protests erupting now? And are they effective? Correspondent David Pogue talks with Michael Kazin, a veteran of 1960s anti-war protests; Dan Mogulof, public affairs officer at UC Berkeley; and Georgetown University protest organizer Selina al-Shihabi, about the tensions between free speech and public safety.

Really strange way to present a serious subject matter, while many students and faculties are being brutalized and paying heavy price of punishment infringing their rights.

I’m for educating people but these universities are pretty full of silver spoon babies. Most of them won’t even use their education for jobs. It’s pretty sad.
Not what they expect. We should have congressional hearing’s on who, how and when organized this mayhem. We need reform in higher education to cut costs, useless faculty and administrators. In this technological era we don’t so many of them. If police will not get involved then private citizens will.

Three months ago, when this was happening in Europe, I was surprised at the lack of participation in America. I spoke with a friend of mine who is on the faculty at a university and they said, "Wait until the weather is nice. Post-Spring Break is protest season.".
I hope these students aren't ditching their study groups. Finals are right around the corner and college is too expensive to be failing classes. ✌🏻

What are you even talking about? They're literally protesting the U.S.'s pivotal role in facilitating the genocide (i.e. arming, funding, supporting it logistically). Without that the massacre would have to stop.
If you went there you would see the same thing as you see on your screen, a captive population being slaughtered. The students might be naive in their tactics but they understand the situation perfectly well, as do you. Our country's goods are being interrupted in the Red Sea. Our country will be targeted for violence in retribution for this. This conflict could easily widen and threaten nuclear war. My generation protested for my university’s divestiture with apartheid/South Africa. I’ve marched on Washington. I’ve marched in countless city marches. East Coast, West Coast. All sanctioned marches and all got their point across.
Sadly most of this appears to be trendy.
People posting images and videos to social media. I say “people” as many of them are not students or faculty. Akin to nonstudents trashing Florida beaches during during what was once called spring break. Now it’s called anarchy, and most are not students.
I recently asked a pro Palestinian marcher had they ever been to Palestine. “No”. As a non-Middle Eastern caucasian I think they expected me to say I had not, I have. I’ve also worked with refugees in Lebanon. I have Israeli friends and have met Palestinian refugees and migrants and value that I have respectfully discussed these issues with all.

Protest most certainly does make a difference. It changed the course of history in India. It helped to end the Vietnam War. It brought about the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act and ended segregation. It helped to bring an end to apartheid in South Africa. Doesn't work? Ask the former Soviet block countries. Look up the Singing revolution in Estonia.

What I find interesting is that for the most part, my friends who are from that region barely post anything about the conflict. The ones who don't have ties to the region are the most vocal (in my group).

Since I spent many years at UPenn as a student and staff, I can tell you no one, in admin, wants encampments on college green which is front of the major admin bldg.
Well the entire school was shut down and are doing zoom classes so no I don’t consider that peaceful and not hurting anyone

This absolutely makes a difference. Universities are incredibly protective over their endowments, and Congress is already very critical of the investments. Also universities are already facing a huge PR crisis right now. Their collective image is taking a huge hit.
