The first 15 years of two giant sequoias

  • Another year, another update. At the end the introduction of the little nephew, donated to the ancient Duivenvoorde castle.
    For newcomers: in December 2006 we visited the Grant Village Visitor Center in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park in California, USA. We bought some seeds of the the giant sequoia and back home in Holland; Europe, two feet below sea level, two little sequoias started to grow in December 2006. And now, January 2021, 15 years later …..

    Incredible to see how well they have done. When I saw your first video I was only a teenager and a beginner gardener/tree conservationist.
    I'm now 27 and have planted many many trees in my local area in Yorkshire, England. I have grown 5x endangered species of tree and as I am typing this I have some baby sequoia's germinating on my windowsill as my next conservation project.
    Thanks for the inspiration all those years ago. I can't wait to see the 20 year update! Kind regards, D Pictures.

      I prefer giant sequoias so much over coastal redwoods but unfortunately giant sequoias need fire to successfully reproduce and spread so they’re basically impossible to establish a permanent forest or grove of anywhere in the world except for California. Maybe Australia could work if it got more floods or snow or rain or something. There are a few ways for sequoias to spread without fire and off the top of my head if cones fall off the tree somehow and hit the ground hard enough they can explode, and number two is that the young branches that are still green can be planted and have a 97% survival rate, much higher than the seeds, so every time a sequoia loses a branch there’s a chance that some of the younger growth gets stuck in the ground just right and takes hold, however this has yet to occur in any grove outside of its natural groves in america

      Yes, I suspect if they were put into larger pots sooner or in the ground sooner they'd be bigger now. There may be a valid reason why the trees were kept in pots for several years. The opposite is one of the reasons bonsai works.

      @@babybees1390 I don’t want to shit on your dreams, but a successful giant sequoia grove is nearly impossible anywhere but the western sierras because giant sequoia cones don’t open unless they get above the temperature where the sap sealing them shut melts so the seeds can fall out. And its trunk is over 25 ft in circumference. It's the largest of three. Six seedlings were planted all those years ago. It is the largest Giant Sequoia east of the Rocky Mountains. Lijkt me prachtig om ze eens in het echt in de US te mogen zien. Ik weet niet of u dit boek kent, maar het moet vast en zeker een interessant boek zijn, al heb ik de tijd nog niet genomen om het zelf te lezen, het heet; 'King Sequoia' van William C. Tweed. Volgens mij vertelt het over de menselijke historische relatie met deze soort boom. (Wat eigenlijk een triest verhaal is natuurlijk).
    Ergens in de VS, ik dacht New York Natural History museum, moet ook nog een doorsnede van een gigantisch exemplaar liggen waar ze een kalender van gemaakt hebben; per jaarring is er aangegeven welke grote historische gebeurtenissen zich in het leven van de desbetreffende boom hebben afgespeeld. Did you just plant them in the ground and "forget" about them or do you regularly fertilise and otherwise take care of them?

    • @martinvn123
      @martinvn123  Před 2 lety +1

      Of course I have not forgotten them, but in terms of their development they now stand on their own feet; I mean own roots

      Yes, but hopefully far enough away. Otherwise, the power line will have a problem

    You should have a picture at the end of year of you standing next to them showing how much taller they’ve grown. Also this is frustrating for me. My Sequoia is about 6+ months old and it’s hardly grown any taller at all in maybe the last 4 months. Just like my last one before it finally died but I don’t think I’m having the same problem this time around.

      But what if I grow faster than the trees? As for your tree: Is there sufficient nutrition in the soil? I guess, it is probably in its dormant period and will grow again in the spring.

      Hehe the giant sequoia and the coastal sequoia grow very fast when cultivated, you will be amazed how much they can grow in 20 or 30 years

    I have a question - How to make a tree grow faster any tips?

    • @martinvn123
      @martinvn123  Před 2 lety +1

      Pull hard at the top! But seriously, they grow at their own pace. They must be able to catch water on the spot (rain) and suck it up with their roots. If they are in the ground, they will grow faster than in a pot.
