The first 16,5 years of two giant sequoias
2023: another year, another update. In 2006 we visited the Grant Village Visitor Center in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park in California, USA. We bought some seeds of the the giant sequoia and back home in Holland; Europe, two feet below sea level, two little sequoias started to grow in December 2006. And now, June 2023 16,5 years later, in Holland two giant sequoia trees are growing (and since 2021 a little nephew).

Thank you for sharing this. I live in California. I have always loved the Sequoia trees (coastal redwoods as well as the giant sequoias). I just started germinating some seeds I brought back from trip to see the Sequoias. I wish I had started this project 20 years ago, but better late than never. These trees will outlive us all and many generations after us. I hope to leave the world a better place than I found it. It’s these little acts of kindness that matter. One note I would like to make is that these giant sequoias have shallow roots and they grow better in groves. Plant other sequoias near them as the hold each other up by interweaving their roots. One of the main reasons of their death is just falling over. Thank you for sharing this beautiful journey.

When visiting the Okeefenokee Swamp in Georgia (USA) in the 1990's I picked up some bald cypress seeds and then planted them on the bank of my pond in South Florida. One is now at least 5 feet tall. This does not seem so remarkable except that all of the cypresses in my area are pond cypress which are much, much shorter at maturity. This one will be the giant of the neighborhood. It was an experiment on my part. I had learned that cypress seeds should be planted in soil that will be wet or damp for at least 3 months. I don't own that property any more but I visit the next door neighbor; you can count on me to peek over the fence to see how it's doing.

🤔 So, 7 years to grow only 125cm in a little pot, and in the other 5 years it reached 475cm in nature. The lesson here is: never leave a tree in a pot for more than 1 year. Roots need space to grow healthy. Unless you want a cute bonsai 😆he he.

I live in the northern suburbs of Philadelphia, in Bucks county. One of my neighbors has an absolutely gorgeous enormous trees on one corner of his lot. One day I asked and he told me it was a sequoia (at least a hundred foot), that was planted 35 years before. Another 35 years and they’ll have to move the house.

The deer came by and ate all the branches off. Some just died. Then we had the minus 30 degree and more Polar Vortex cold snap in BC Canada, which mostly wiped the rest out. A couple survived, which I will take to the Coast.
