The lack of Nightmare Freddy in the FNAF 4 thumbnails was probably done because Mark didn't want to spoil the jumpscare for himself (Also he didn't even encounter Nightmare Freddy until the extras menu was unlocked) so he just used the footage he recorded and made what he could with those screenshots.

fun fact: the reason that the original freddy's fnaf 1 frame was still used in marks fnaf 4 part 1 video was because he had not yet encountered nightmare freddy in-game, and REALLY didn't want to spoil it for himself which is just crazy to me
I noticed that Mark usually uses the characters he either died to a lot in that episode or just saw a bunch in the episode. Which is kind of cool.
The ones he sees more often in game will likely have better quality captures with more angles to work with since he uses screenshots. The fact that you'll see them the most in gane is the cherry on top.

The Homestuck cosplay transition screens were physically painful. Like a FNAF jumpascare, but the animatronic is my 13 year old self.
I clicked from the notification, so this video is factually wrong and the universe is ending.

You know, I really love the touch of the usual outro being replaced with a Markiplier-style jumpscare loop outro. Really adds to the Markiplier experience.

Idk if it’s just me but Mark’s white background thumbnails were always one of my favorites, maybe it’s just because a lot of the videos were really funny, but that one thumbnail specifically was just hilarious on its own

16:19 feels a little flippant for one of the best applications of actual photography skills in the series. rule of two thirds be damned (being off-center is one of the most effective framing tools possible; it's even used in this video's thumbnail.) it is simple and effective, using only contrasting colors. literally everything you want and need in a thumbnail. "dead space" is a myth for this particular thumbnail style when the dead space is in and of itself a framing device to enhance the focal points (puppet).
Hey fun fact, so when I was younger and first saw mark’s first FNaF thumbnail I thought Bonnie was a walrus and that FNAF was a point and click horror game that took place in a haunted house where you had to complete tasks for the animal hosts. Keep in mind I had NO FNaF knowledge past this ONE image.
When I first saw it I thought it was one of those huge inflatable animals car and mobile home dealers use to grab drivers attention. Also, whenever I first had a friend describe the game to me (very badly), I imagined it was a game that took place in a large abandoned windmill where the animatronics would stuff you in a coffin
I thought it was about being a child and spending Five Nights with your friend named Freddy, like a sleepover, while each night you’re terrorized by a bunch of haunted toy animals.

Fun fact: Mark’s fnaf 2 thumbnail with the combo of the top of withered Chica and the bottom of Withered Bonnie is referencing to what happened in the video where he ended up getting a glitch where he got jump scared by withered Bonnie but withered Chica was also in the office for some reason, that’s why he made the thumbnail like that, even if it doesn’t look that good

the revisited thumbnails weren't good (they were obviously made in like a minute as they were live stream thumbnails) but the streams themselves were genuinely amazing, especially the 2nd one
21:49 has to be my favorite mark thumbnail in general. Your thoughts on it are totally valid, the uncanny weirdness of it is just something I love. It's both funny and intriguing, and as a thumbnail it is one of the most effective attention grabbers I've seen probably ever. It's really cool to see how two different people can look at the same image and have the exact opposite opinions for the exact same reason.
When I was a kid I saw Markiplier's FNAF 2 titles and thumbnails (plus the title of MatPat's FNAF 2 video) and imagined some crazy plot involving a killer combining Bonnie and Chica in order to kill the player, and also the game ending with some reveal about Golden Freddy (I assumed Markiplier's thumbnail was a screenshot from the end, and I also remember mistakenly thinking the danglies were sparks?). Part of this was just me not knowing how FNAF actually played (I was 11 and too scared to watch FNAF videos) so I'd just guessed what the games were probably like based on my nonexistent knowledge of what horror games were like. I definitely remember thinking the part 1 thumbnail was from some sort of opening cutscene.
Back when Mark uploaded his first FNAF video, I was still in High School. That, and I was actually quite disturbed by the thumbnail. It was 10:00 PM on a school night, and I wanted zero chance of having nightmares. Nowadays I don't get unnerved as easily, but it's still wild for me to think about.

The issue with the one at 9:13 is in the composition of the image. They are too smushed together in the same plane of perspective, that (along with the jumpscare faces) makes it feel like they are competing for space. If you look at toy freddie's shoulder it looks like he is about to elbow the fuck outta bonnie and while saying "Get out of my light, rabbit!"
Looking at the next thumbnails from that point foreward, it seems that mark noticed that issue and make sure not to repeat it, the Monty + Endo from SB is a good example of that evolution.

Idk why but I always liked the blurry parts of those thumbnails, as it made it feel like there was a lot going on in the sense that they're moving, kinda like the fnaf 1 thumbnail with Bonnie's jumpscare being blurry, or fnaf 4 N.Bonnie being blurry in the background, like it makes me feel like he's running down the hall behind N.Chica, yeah Plushtrap does look a little odd lmao. With the ones with empty spaces, like the Nightmarion jumpscare, idk why I like it, it might be something to do with negative space or that it just looks ominous due to well, that jumpscare looks pretty damn cool and creepy by itself, even without the implications of that character representing death itself, but just the odd amount of empty space in the background sort of emphasizes that feeling for me. I also remember the fnaf 2 W.Foxy thumbnail fondly and always thought it looked cool, that and I have always digged W.Foxy's design, so the use of his rare screen in that thumbnail is quite nostalgic to say the least for me in terms of his fnaf 2 playthrough. But yeah I'd say what makes a good thumbnail can vary depending on whom you ask, so what might pop out to one person may just be scrolled by another. Though there will be quite the overlap in what is seen as appealing or as a good thumbnail, as some thumbnails in general are good while others are bad.

I love Markiplier's first ever Five Nights at Freddy's video called: Warning Scariest Game In Years! And he is not lying about the scariest game in Years Part, it used to be his third most popular video for a long time but his animal videos such as moo, woof, meow... Are the best ones now with moo just passing the fnaf video recently, woof being at over 150M and with meow being over a whopping 350M
I actually really like the nightmarione one, the first one with the jumpscare frame. It being unedited and off to the left slightly, to me at least, feels like it adds to uneasiness of nightmarione, the twisted uncanny version of this puppet that we knew at this point to be a benevolent character.
