I’ve owned both. Currently driving a GX. Engine and transmission package in the GX is another level than the 4Runner. GX is much more comfortable and pleasent to drive. If your 6’2 or taller get the GX. Steering is better on the 4 runner. The rear window going down on the 4 runner is awesome. Wish the GX had that feature I do miss it.
Don’t buy the GX new. If you can find a low mileage GX used or L Certified get it.

When I went shopping for a vehicle recently, I tried both a 4Runner limited and a GX460 premium. Although I didn’t want to spend the extra 11k between the 2, the GX460 left me no choice.
Other than the V8 and 6 speed transmission compared to the 4Runners v6 and 5 speed transmission, the GX460 has a much quieter ride and a higher quality cabin. You also get more interior space!!. A warning to anyone trying to save money…do not get into a GX460. Just stick to trying out the 4Runners. I promise you once you get into a GX, the 4Runner feels a few steps down.

Puzzles me that you can spend 65K on a Lexus SUV and not get leather seating. I have a 2015 4runner LTD owned since new that just passed 150k miles. Leather holding up really well and the JBL is an underrated stock system. And happy to not have a 3rd row since I haul cargo often. I go back and forth all the time on whether I want to get the GX but to me not worth the extra $$$ and it's always nice to be sans car payment. It will be really interesting how the next few years shake out with these SUVs and how Toyota decides to power them. Just not crazy about the push towards turbo powerplants. As automobile manufacturers try to pull out more and more horsepowers out of the engines which are only getting smaller and smaller, paired to transmissions which are only getting faster paired to AWD systems in a car which not only have air conditioning but ventilated seats as well. Cars are also getting heavier with every generation thanks to added features and to stop these heavier cars bigger breaks are being installed.
Most of these vehicles are used in start and stop traffic of cities and some even use their vehicles for towing.
And all this creates lot of heat in engine bay and to dissipate heat you need more air flow hence the bigger grilles.
Believe me engineers will love to make a front end without any grille like teslas because it reduces air drag significantly which will increase fuel efficiency atleast until engine shuts down itself from overheating.

It has more sound deadning, it's much smoother and luxuries to drive, it has a V8 engine and the interior and materials of the Lexus is much nicer.

I never reset my average MPG tracker on the vehicles and my lexus is averaging 19.3MPG and my 4 Runner is averaging 17.1MPG. I would give the powertrain category to the lexus hands down. For the interior I am 6ft 4 and I would say the Lexus also has much better headroom, my hair grazes the top of the 4Runner. My favorite part about the 4runner is the rear widow is able to roll down instead of just pop out. When I go buy 2x4s etc its more convenient to have them hang out the back of the 4runner. I think both models are good but if I could do it all over I would have bought a 2nd GX460 instead of the 4 Runner.

As a driver of both, well not yet, but soon, I would not spend 1 penny on that 5th gen 4runner. I have mine for 3 months and almost 1500 miles. It sits in the garage because I hate everything about it. For 47000 its not good at all. I find myself driving my 08 limited 4runner V8 all the time now. I pulled a flat open trailer recently and was struggling up hills, unloaded. Ive towed boats with the 08 and it didnt even feel like it was there. The brakes, ride, and noise are horrible with the new 4runner. A slight breeze you are in the next lane. A slight bump you are in the next lane. None of this is felt with the 08. As soon as this 21 is gone Im walking to the Lexus dealer and driving a 460 home. Period. You cant judge cars in one day...

I don't understand why every driver critique on steering?? It weighs 6000 lbs of course the steering and breaking is not going to be as smooth as a smaller car. This is what you get when you don't take physics and not accounting for momentum, inertia, weight, velocity and mass of a huge behemoth vehicle. I like to know the numbers and compare the forerunner and the gx 460. That's where the difference lies and of course yohh must drive it and forget all of CZcams's critique. In addition, no one is talking about the maintenance and cost of these massive vehicles.

For anyone who is latched onto either the 4Runner or GX and can afford either of them, the decision comes down to the feature differences. Anyway, if you want a tailgate that folds upwards and has power glass that opens, then 4Runner is the choice. If you want slightly nicer interior and don't care about a dated infotainment, then GX is the choice. If you want lower cost options for upgrading the suspension later on, 4runner. The V6 vs V8 doesn't matter, except for towing and maybe better highway passing performance with V8. And so on. I stumbled upon a combination 4Runner and GX owners forum...half the owners of either vehicle had wished they would have went with the other. That's says a lot!

Had 4Runner limited for years, great truck, but not refined. Highway driving was noisy, it bounched around in high winds & generally felt truck-like at best - also the v6 struggled towing the boat. Bought the GX 460 and it’s on another level of refinement. Weight, handling, suspension, on-road/off road is much more comfortable driving experience. The V8 with 6speed transmission is the game changer. Both fantastic vehicles that are bullet proof if properly maintained, but for my money, the GX wins hands down 👍.

Limited also has third row seating. comes with Xreas suspension and Lexus 460 comes with Kdss stock. Both are essentially the same size interior. Same width. The v8 offer more power. The upper models of Lexus offer height adjustment and suspension ride quality. If you got enough money for a limited you got enough for a Lexus 460. Go with the Lexus although both are made in Japan. From the same plant and production lines.

The 4.0 is bullet proof but underpowered. Its the main reason I traded my 4 Runner in on a Tundra. If the 4 Runner had the GX460's 4.6, I would have kept it. I do not like the styling on the GX460. I don't like being forced to have a third row. Its a waste of space. And I hate that stupid rear door. I will admit that mechanically, its more modern then the 4 runner which has been development and updated starved for years now.

The powertrain is not a tie when the GX has 20% more torque across the entire RPM band in addition to having it much earlier on. There is no difference in fuel economy in real world nor would 1 mpg be an influence for purchasing one over the other. The additional non/standard off road features aren't really relevant for offroading either way and certainly don't compensate for the lack of power that the 4runner has by contrast or lack of KDSS (outside of the TRD pro). It's objectively an incorrect analysis to call these drivetrains equal- just sayin! These vehicles are about $5-7k apart in price

    • @mikemayers8672

Gx takes premium gas and has worse fuel economy plus it’s much heavier. New 4Runner is expensive but still makes sense. Gx is the ultimate mall crawler. Sale numbers are 100k apart. If you’re buying new GX you’re throwing money away. 4runner as it ages gains in cool factor. Lexus just becomes more of an old man car.

@@mikemayers8672 you exaggerate the fuel, and the limited 4runner or TRD are 250-300 less pounds- that isn't as significant as you make it out to be for vehicles in the midsize SUV range around 5,000 pounds. throwing money away with the GX? lol the GX is objectively a superior vehicle so you're exaggerating claims and using subjective nonsense like "cool factor" to make yourself feel like the 4runner is somehow better, lol. if you like the 4runner more there's nothing wrong with that, but it's simply a pared down version of the GX/Prado, plain and simple.

I would recommend a GX over a 4Runner limited. With the GX you get both some luxury and off road, with the limited it’s mostly just on road driving due to the 20” wheels. Also, the limited has X-REAS which is a huge nightmare when it leaks, and it does leak fairly often. X-REAS only benefits on road but it doesn’t do that much. GX has KDSS, which is a very reliable system and is great for both off and on road.

Our 2015 Lexus RX450h gets 19mpg City, 35 mpg Highway. Living in Colorado Springs, CO we go off road frequently with our RX450H and 2021 4Runner. Our RX450H out performs our 2021 4RUNNER, except for ground clearance as the 2015 RX450h exhaust hangs low going under rear suspension which I will replace with a custom exhaust system.
It would be awesome if Toyota adapted our Lexus RX450h hybrid system to the 4Runner with a proportional upgraded more powerful lithium battery, motors and 10 speed transmission.
The inverter could also be used to power high amp 110v and 220v items including off the grid equipment including camping trailers, etc.
Ford is already doing this with the F150 hybrid and is rumored is going to adapt to the full size Bronco and Expedition.
