I have this exact 4RUNNER and I love it. Very fun to drive. Lots of luxury.
I just brought the same color Lexus GX 460 luxury on Saturday. Can’t wait to pick it up tomorrow.
Good luck with your new car. But it's a Toyota so 200,000 miles later it will still be like new.
I’ve owned both. Currently driving a GX. Engine and transmission package in the GX is another level than the 4Runner. GX is much more comfortable and pleasent to drive. If your 6’2 or taller get the GX. Steering is better on the 4 runner. The rear window going down on the 4 runner is awesome. Wish the GX had that feature I do miss it.
Don’t buy the GX new. If you can find a low mileage GX used or L Certified get it.
Just picked up a used GX 460
and totally in awe and love ❤️
Totally, the result of the comparison in this vid is not quite accurate. I enjoyed 4runner but gx is definitely better driving experience than 4runner.
Agreed the 4runners 5 speed is 🤢
What year GX would you recommend?
@@jamesthen1nja I got a 2017 in January of 2020. 9,000 miles on it when I bought it. Just try to find a low mileage one.
Both made in Japan so great either way. Lexus gx prefered.
Great review! I love my 4Runner off road premium! I mostly drive on road. The KDSS in mine is definitely a must for on road driving. I’m glad I added it. It’s such a smooth ride. 👍👏🏻😊
I have the same. The KDSS was worth the extra
I ripped mine out and added lift system.
@@duperfastEUC then why buy one with KDSS? And you don’t have to gut your kdss, there are plenty of lifts that goes with KDSS. Plenty of good ones too up to 3 inches. I guess do you don’t want to pay the kdss replacement every 80-120k then i get it but at that point, you should have some money saved up bu then (assuming you’re buying new or with low mileage on used one). I’d recommend the Robinson IMS lift with kdss lt Paris well with KDSS
Will always go with the GX..I love mine.💗💞💓 4Runner is nice as well.
Gx460 wins, V8 is just very good
That's not even the the 2021 4Runner, it's totally ugly!!
The *GX* Wins!
Damn right
4RUNNER! 😎👍🏼!
We all are George.... Nice 👍. Both are great choices. V-8 power will be a thing of the past sooner than later. Both are pretty much bullet proof choices...
I was trying to buy 4Runner thinking 🤔 it was cheaper than the gx460 I was wrong the 4Runner is 20% more expensive than the gx I bought the gx460 and I looooooved it
Got 17 GX premium sport edition with 1.25' wheel spacers. Love the stance!
Does one use premium gas and one use regular?
Does one have a timing chain and the other a timing belt?
The 4Runner limited does NOT come with Multi-Terrain Select or Crawl Control. I think it is only the TRD Off Road trims and the TRD Pro.
Thank you for pointing that out. When I heard heard that, I was like “wrong!”
I don't like cabin noise. Can anyone tell me how much of a cabin noise is inside for 4 runner on highway during long distances.
Used to own a 2010 SR5. Will trade in my 2016 EX-L pilot for 4Runner Limited in November. Thanks for the vid.
I have a 2014 GX460 got it for a steal... replacing the current grill with the 2020 grill LOL... got a 3in lift with 33s he’ll yeah brother.
How much did you get it for?
Was the grill hard to install??
I have a 13 GS and put the 2016+ front bumper on it. Win win
Nice facelift bro. I have 2021 gx but love old grill. Facelift for me too. 🤣
So your halfway to ruining it.
Cool! Thank you for the video :)
Can't go wrong with either or... great SUV'S with incredible reliability. Great review 👏. Most people ask why these SUV'S haven't been changed for more than a decade. The answer is simple.... YOU CANT FIX WHATS NOT BROKEN.
Except the gas mileage
@@samanthajames9773 the silky smooth, ultra reliable V8 on the GX is worth the gas mileage. I'd go with a 4 cyl taco if I was looking at one of these but needed better mpg. You would lose a lot of power but they're all built on the same platform, and all super reliable world class off roaders.
@@tonycarlson9013 I’m not taking a $50,000 car off roading and get it dented and scratched.
@@samanthajames9773you should get the highlander then.
The 4 runner has had minimal changes aside from the engine, trans and fuel tank (now plastic👍) for like 25 years, since 1996.
When I went shopping for a vehicle recently, I tried both a 4Runner limited and a GX460 premium. Although I didn’t want to spend the extra 11k between the 2, the GX460 left me no choice.
Other than the V8 and 6 speed transmission compared to the 4Runners v6 and 5 speed transmission, the GX460 has a much quieter ride and a higher quality cabin. You also get more interior space!!. A warning to anyone trying to save money…do not get into a GX460. Just stick to trying out the 4Runners. I promise you once you get into a GX, the 4Runner feels a few steps down.
Don’t get me wrong, the 4 runner is a real nice vehicle but the GX460 is a different level. Just depends on your budget. You can’t go wrong with either.
As a Gx owner, I find it important to note that interior space for people is good (second and first row), but storage space is kind of abysmal. There’s no under seat storage and that’s something the 4Runner has. But other than that I love my GX460
@@andybub45
As a owner of something that is not in the usa GX is much better than 4runner
Good comparison, thank you.
Puzzles me that you can spend 65K on a Lexus SUV and not get leather seating. I have a 2015 4runner LTD owned since new that just passed 150k miles. Leather holding up really well and the JBL is an underrated stock system. And happy to not have a 3rd row since I haul cargo often. I go back and forth all the time on whether I want to get the GX but to me not worth the extra $$$ and it's always nice to be sans car payment. It will be really interesting how the next few years shake out with these SUVs and how Toyota decides to power them. Just not crazy about the push towards turbo powerplants. Time will tell of course.
You know the Lexus is outdated when you say the 4runner has more updated features. Just wow because the 4runner gets flamed all the time for being so ancient.
My husband got Toyota tundra truck 2006 is still run good he love his truck, now I'm go with Toyota.
For the price $$$$$ and the look and the future savings I'm getting my frist 4 runer 2021 next week.
The GX 460, in addition to being a thirstier girl, she also only drinks premium.
The GX doesn’t really need premium. Don’t waste your money.
@@2007cjt She Needs Premium, Dude..!
@@zipyourlib8370 premium...dude!
You're a sheep if you think it needs premium
Nothing will happen if you use regular gas.
What's with the car companies with their front grills? The 460 looks like the whale that's trying to swallow Jonah.
Hmm.. I always thought the GX460 looked just like the Predator!

As automobile manufacturers try to pull out more and more horsepowers out of the engines which are only getting smaller and smaller, paired to transmissions which are only getting faster paired to AWD systems in a car which not only have air conditioning but ventilated seats as well. Cars are also getting heavier with every generation thanks to added features and to stop these heavier cars bigger breaks are being installed.
Most of these vehicles are used in start and stop traffic of cities and some even use their vehicles for towing.
And all this creates lot of heat in engine bay and to dissipate heat you need more air flow hence the bigger grilles.
Believe me engineers will love to make a front end without any grille like teslas because it reduces air drag significantly which will increase fuel efficiency atleast until engine shuts down itself from overheating.
@@kamalpreetsinghgill1396 I understand. Thanks. I didn't know that. Good explanation.
@@kimnewling5728 i am surprised you took it that well usually people get mad when you give them technical info. 🤣
You are welcome, dude/dudess.
@@kamalpreetsinghgill1396 nope. I'm eager to learn stuff. Thanks again.
4Runner for me. Yes, it has less features but I can’t justify a $20k price hike for the Lexus, and also I just can’t get past that giant grille. Add the fact that some of the tech hasn’t been updated in a decade. For almost $70k that’s unacceptable to me.
100% agree. The 4runner has more than enough tech and features. The exterior of the Lexus isnt in the same league as the toyota...especially the front😝. It’ll look dated in a few years while the toyota styling will endure for decades.
GX460 for me. I really wanted the 4runner Limited Nightshade with 3rd row but the lack of power and headroom for my tall self killed it for me. Plus there was less wiggle room for price on the runner so I ended up with 2020 GX460 Premiem with sport design package for $51260 Just $1000 more then the 4runner I wanted. If you shop lexus during december to remember they offer huge discounts.
GX460 for me, just got 2 year old certified 14k miles for 41k$ so u dont have to get brand new, low miles are just gine they still have warranty
@@RacerJuan42 let me guess you own 4Runner? The fact that they haven't changed much for a long time in the GX simply means it's Bulletproof. The 4runner is for those who like to jump on bandwagons.
That is a bit skewed in perspective. I have a GC premium. The luxury forces you to get air bags in the rear which we all know cost a ton to replace within 5 years or so. That is the 7k above the premium. So unless you want everything and the crawl features, go with a premium around 55 to 57k.
Obviously this is a preferential choice between the two. Both are fantastic vehicles but I have to clear that point up for my little GX.
I'd really like to take the drivetrain from the GX and put that into the 4runner! Yes...That's my wants/needs.
Find a Toyota Prado... that’s the Toyota twin of the GX... shame it’s not available in North Am...
@@arkandrada3305 yea but u can get the pardo in Mexico
and drive it to the us
Get a 3 inch lift in the front and 2 inch in the rear, keep factory rake for safety sensors, Blackout all the chrome and get a Victory 4x4 blitz bumper in the front, their rock sliders, roof racks rear off road bumper, and it looks like a completely different beast.
We have a 2014 4Runner Trail. Basically the 2021 TRD off road without the bigger screen and the radar cruise control. Same seats, exterior style, suspension, engine and transmission. Will get a 2023 or 2024 when they finally change the platform. The GX with the V8 would be nice but the tailgate and grill are deal breakers! Old can be reliable and competent, like ours but would never pay 50 grand for 15 year old tech. We'll see, I'm hoping they will finally have their reliability and modern drivetrains and tech!
4Runner all day for me. I can't believe Lexus hasn't updated their infotainment in 11 years!! I really love the rear windshield that slides down. I have an old 4Runner but would love the blessing of a new limited edition. :-)
Lexus GX is my choice.
The limited has multi terrain???
this is great, thank you!
I'm 6'3' and no way I can get into the back seat of the 4runner... It's not even close between them
"I am George, we are all George"
I thought he sounded familiar lol
GX460 wins easy. GX is just as reliable as 4Runner (maybe more) plus is much more comfortable, more premium, and DRIVES better.
I want the GX460 but I am not a fan of the horizontal trunk opening.
The limited does not have mts or cc
You can’t get a pano roof on the GX either. But great review.
Love both...test drove both. But and pretty big but... The Gx with the super smooth V8 matched with the 6 speed is hard to beat. Add the extra luxury....Mark Levinson Audio...adjustable height control and full time 4 wheel drive....and locking diffs.... the Lexus look and prestige. The GX is hard to beat. As you might have guessed...Bought the GX. Also...got 20..21 mpg on a 1200 mile trip. Just love this car.
Totally agree, same here.
Agree as well. Great choice 👍
Funny, I have a GX 470 and I get 12 MPG
2016 GX here and I average 17mpg with mixed driving, albeit a bit granny style. Anyway, awesome car.
Also the sheet metal in Lexus is different, it's a thicker more quality metal. How I know this? Because I worked as quality control in Lexus.
It has more sound deadning, it's much smoother and luxuries to drive, it has a V8 engine and the interior and materials of the Lexus is much nicer.
So you get what you pay for.
That's the reason they used ones get sold so quickly. You can drive these cars for a long long time just with regular maintenance
Blue planet, thanks for your helpful comments. Your work in quality control at Lexus gives your comments added weight. Makes sense you get what you pay in products coming from essentially the same manufacturer, being Toyota.
Amen! I have never even met my Lexus mechanic. Not a single issue since 2016.
I agree, just by closing the GX door you can hear the difference in sound that the materials are not the same.
You read my mind bro, am looking at both SUV as my top choice, now I know which one to get, 4Runner
Shut your mouth

@@ted6462 still lexus is better in every way
Owned 4runners since 2006....test drove a gx460 but still opted for my 4Runner limited.....key factors being price & warranty work...Toyota wouldn’t do warranty work...they’d do maintenance only...nearest Lexus dealer being 3 hours away....yea not cost effective for that at all....maybe they’ve changed now but that was a big decision maker...still, being a loyal Toyota fan, it’s not a hard decision for me to make....
Can you use regular gas on Lexus or you have to use Premium 93 octane?
GX460 is 91.
I own both the Toyota 4 Runner Limited and the GX460 Luxury. Your engine comparison isn't what I have experienced. I never reset my average MPG tracker on the vehicles and my lexus is averaging 19.3MPG and my 4 Runner is averaging 17.1MPG. I would give the powertrain category to the lexus hands down. For the interior I am 6ft 4 and I would say the Lexus also has much better headroom, my hair grazes the top of the 4Runner. My favorite part about the 4runner is the rear widow is able to roll down instead of just pop out. When I go buy 2x4s etc its more convenient to have them hang out the back of the 4runner. I think both models are good but if I could do it all over I would have bought a 2nd GX460 instead of the 4 Runner.
Why can't the seats In 4 runner be comfortable
For tall persons?
GX 460 all the way!
Yeah the 4runner gets honorable mention for being a great little brother with a super cool rear window but the GX is definitely the superior in everyway except infotainment system, and rear window. GX rear hatch is better for mounting a spare though..
Both have their worth... Since I HATE Depreciation, I will wait 3-5yrs and get the GX... Eventhough the MAINTENANCE for the GX is a KILLER...!!!
Wrong on the GX unless you're being ripped off!
awesome review! well done!
As a driver of both, well not yet, but soon, I would not spend 1 penny on that 5th gen 4runner. I have mine for 3 months and almost 1500 miles. It sits in the garage because I hate everything about it. For 47000 its not good at all. I find myself driving my 08 limited 4runner V8 all the time now. I pulled a flat open trailer recently and was struggling up hills, unloaded. Ive towed boats with the 08 and it didnt even feel like it was there. The brakes, ride, and noise are horrible with the new 4runner. A slight breeze you are in the next lane. A slight bump you are in the next lane. None of this is felt with the 08. As soon as this 21 is gone Im walking to the Lexus dealer and driving a 460 home. Period. You cant judge cars in one day...
Big thing for people. The gx460 is Toyotas 4runnee rebadged. The gx460 is actually the foreign land cruiser prado. That’s right. It’s a land cruiser mini.
How is this even a question? GX460. V8, double wishbone suspension, full time 4wd, and acoustic laminate glass.
I don't understand why every driver critique on steering?? It weighs 6000 lbs of course the steering and breaking is not going to be as smooth as a smaller car. This is what you get when you don't take physics and not accounting for momentum, inertia, weight, velocity and mass of a huge behemoth vehicle. I like to know the numbers and compare the forerunner and the gx 460. That's where the difference lies and of course yohh must drive it and forget all of CZcams's critique. In addition, no one is talking about the maintenance and cost of these massive vehicles.
I have a GX460 and I love it ❤️
Wow, great to know my 4runner fuel economy finally wins once.
By 1 mpg
A,so2015 models get 20 mpg on the highway

I HEARD THE VOICE AND WAS LIKE WTF I THOUGHT I CLICKED A CAR VEWVIEW NOT A BITCOIN REVIEW LOL
Yooo! I was caught way off guard.
I have an RX 450H and would really love to purchase a GX in the near future. I'm hoping that they will choose to update the infotainment, and center dash. A power-lift rear hatch is also essential. Wondering if they would ever put a Hybrid 6-cylinder, or twin turbo 6 (from the LS) in the new version. Great review- very comprehensive for 8 minutes!
Just get one as is, flaws and all, and I bet you would never complain.
@@ted6462 Excellent advice sir!
I have 2021 GX, the only problem is that you have to use Premium gas 91 or 93 octane.
@@og8322 $10 more per tank of gas isn't a problem- it's a crumb to the wind
For anyone who is latched onto either the 4Runner or GX and can afford either of them, the decision comes down to the feature differences. Anyway, if you want a tailgate that folds upwards and has power glass that opens, then 4Runner is the choice. If you want slightly nicer interior and don't care about a dated infotainment, then GX is the choice. If you want lower cost options for upgrading the suspension later on, 4runner. The V6 vs V8 doesn't matter, except for towing and maybe better highway passing performance with V8. And so on. I stumbled upon a combination 4Runner and GX owners forum...half the owners of either vehicle had wished they would have went with the other. That's says a lot!
Prior to Covid you could get a 3-year-old GX 460 with 33k miles for 33 thousand dollars from a Lexus dealer. Don't buy a new one.
Had 4Runner limited for years, great truck, but not refined. Highway driving was noisy, it bounched around in high winds & generally felt truck-like at best - also the v6 struggled towing the boat. Bought the GX 460 and it’s on another level of refinement. Weight, handling, suspension, on-road/off road is much more comfortable driving experience. The V8 with 6speed transmission is the game changer. Both fantastic vehicles that are bullet proof if properly maintained, but for my money, the GX wins hands down 👍.
Limited also has third row seating. comes with Xreas suspension and Lexus 460 comes with Kdss stock. Both are essentially the same size interior. Same width. The v8 offer more power. The upper models of Lexus offer height adjustment and suspension ride quality. If you got enough money for a limited you got enough for a Lexus 460. Go with the Lexus although both are made in Japan. From the same plant and production lines.
The 4.0 is bullet proof but underpowered. Its the main reason I traded my 4 Runner in on a Tundra. If the 4 Runner had the GX460's 4.6, I would have kept it. I do not like the styling on the GX460. I don't like being forced to have a third row. Its a waste of space. And I hate that stupid rear door. I will admit that mechanically, its more modern then the 4 runner which has been development and updated starved for years now.
Had a ‘12 4Runner for the past 9 years & 172k miles, just got an ‘18 GX460. Love them both for different reasons but was just ready for a change!!! I have to say though I was not interested in the newest models with that chunky grille!
Let's just be honest.. you can't go wrong with either one.. it just depends 🤷 on your wallet
I just test drove a '16 GX and I was surprised that the HMI was as primitive as our '17 4R ORP. Not that that's a bad thing. Less stuff to break and obsolescence is built in from day 1! 😂
The 4runner Limited and many of its trims is a man's SUV....those Lexus vehicles are nice and lavish but they are more for women....that's the difference.what a typical 4runner can do over rivers, muddy terrain and steep hills a Lexus GX460 can only dream of....Lexus vehicles are perfect for city folks all that bling bling looks and feels nice when your in one of them.😊😅
For me I would say if you have the money buy Lexus gx460 the engine is known for its longlife
BRO I WAS LOOKING FOR A CAR AND WAS LIKE WTF THIS IS GEORGE, NOW IF I GET ONE OF THESE CARS ILL ALSO BE GEORGE.
How the gx is better.
Gx460 has:
Adaptive suspension
Central diff lock
6500lb towing
301 ho
329 pft
7.4 sec 0-60
Crawl control
Blind spot detection
And a lot more that the 4Runner doesn’t have
I know that voice. Is this cryptos r us?
Land Cruiser Prado would sell way better in the USA.
The Toyota twin of the GX will kill the sales of the 4Runner...
No point of bringing Landcruiser prado and 4Runner in same market Lexus Gx460 is luxurious version of prado similar to Lexus LX570 is the luxurious version of the landcruiser
The powertrain is not a tie when the GX has 20% more torque across the entire RPM band in addition to having it much earlier on. There is no difference in fuel economy in real world nor would 1 mpg be an influence for purchasing one over the other. The additional non/standard off road features aren't really relevant for offroading either way and certainly don't compensate for the lack of power that the 4runner has by contrast or lack of KDSS (outside of the TRD pro). It's objectively an incorrect analysis to call these drivetrains equal- just sayin! These vehicles are about $5-7k apart in price
Gx takes premium gas and has worse fuel economy plus it’s much heavier. New 4Runner is expensive but still makes sense. Gx is the ultimate mall crawler. Sale numbers are 100k apart. If you’re buying new GX you’re throwing money away. 4runner as it ages gains in cool factor. Lexus just becomes more of an old man car.
@@mikemayers8672 you exaggerate the fuel, and the limited 4runner or TRD are 250-300 less pounds- that isn't as significant as you make it out to be for vehicles in the midsize SUV range around 5,000 pounds. throwing money away with the GX? lol the GX is objectively a superior vehicle so you're exaggerating claims and using subjective nonsense like "cool factor" to make yourself feel like the 4runner is somehow better, lol. if you like the 4runner more there's nothing wrong with that, but it's simply a pared down version of the GX/Prado, plain and simple.
I love my GX 460! Not good w/ gas but keeps my family safe on the road.

Does the 4Runner Limited really have that much of a better ride than the other trim levels?
Rumor is that a new 4Runner is coming in the 2nd half of 2022 & a new GX will arrive in early 2023.

It’s upgraded for 2022
Wait!!! is this the cryto R us guy!????
On our second GX. No regrets.
Seems like on your category number 2, Powertrain, the 4Runner tied with the Lexus based on price rather than on features. It seems to me that the Lexus should have won on Powertrain because you have a separate category for Price.
I would recommend a GX over a 4Runner limited. With the GX you get both some luxury and off road, with the limited it’s mostly just on road driving due to the 20” wheels. Also, the limited has X-REAS which is a huge nightmare when it leaks, and it does leak fairly often. X-REAS only benefits on road but it doesn’t do that much. GX has KDSS, which is a very reliable system and is great for both off and on road.
GX for me.
Nice reveiw the gx is a better quality build than the four runner and handles better due to sway bar automatic adjustment so I’ll take that
4Runner with GX460's 6 speed auto tranny will be the ultimate winner.
I have the same 4Runner
These two SUVs are the same. The 4Runner is the american version, the Lexus GX is based on the Land Cruiser Prado, but is the same architecture as the 4 Runner.
That is why the wheelbase is the same, because they are thr same. Obviously the Lexus is more refined and luxurious, just like the big Land Cruiser and the Lexus GL.
In my opinion the Toyota makes more sense, but that is just me.
put the v8 in 4runner and ill take the 4runner all day
I can't stand that lexus grill. It makes is annoying to replace the front bumper with something off-road worthy too. But I'd still rather have the V8.
Agree with you
Just buy a 2010-13 GX without the grille, same vehicle otherwise
4runner dispite the engine, the looks is good for an off road car!!!
4Runner ltd has a full time awd not 4wd. Very different
We have a 2015 Lexus RX450h AWD V6 Hybrid and a 2021 4Runner 4X4, limited which is our 4th 4Runner. We really miss our 2005 4Runner V8 as our 2021 4Runner 4X4 v6 is frankly 💩🤮!
Our 2015 Lexus RX450h gets 19mpg City, 35 mpg Highway. Living in Colorado Springs, CO we go off road frequently with our RX450H and 2021 4Runner. Our RX450H out performs our 2021 4RUNNER, except for ground clearance as the 2015 RX450h exhaust hangs low going under rear suspension which I will replace with a custom exhaust system.
It would be awesome if Toyota adapted our Lexus RX450h hybrid system to the 4Runner with a proportional upgraded more powerful lithium battery, motors and 10 speed transmission.
The inverter could also be used to power high amp 110v and 220v items including off the grid equipment including camping trailers, etc.
Ford is already doing this with the F150 hybrid and is rumored is going to adapt to the full size Bronco and Expedition.
The Toyota 4Runner is clearly falling farther and farther behind.
I've owned 4RUNNER 2006 V8 and now have 2018 RX450h. I was considering getting a new 4RUNNER V6, but now having seen your comments on your 4Runner V6 I won't buy v6 4runner. Got spoiled by the V8 which is silky smooth. Rx450h is driven by my wife who loves it.
@@bl1707 Hopefully Toyota is listening. We will sell our 2021 after the 3rd year of the next generation 4Runner comes out of which is rumored Toyota will offer a twin turbo v6 and/or hybrid version with superior hp/torque and fuel economy.

I keep on watching toyota highlander, rav4 prime, pathfinder but I'm still ending with GX everytime I see this Car....
At zeros Mileage, the cost of both I will definitely go for 4Runner. GX460 is a Luxury SUV, my friend own one and told me the repair bills if somethings goes wrong is no jokes. So, I will go for 4Runner. Not to talk about the car insurance cost on the GX460, no thanks!
Not true!. I have owned multiple GX460s as well as a 4Runner and the repair costs are almost the same as Toyota in most cases as they share some common parts. Also, insurance on my 22 GX460 was about $15 more a month than a 22 4Runner. The 4Runner is nice but the Gx460 is a lot more car for the money.
GX any day!
