I have been watching the NBA since the 1970s, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Kareem is the greatest of all time. 6 League MVPs is more than any other player, most points scored and the most unstoppable shot in history.
As an avid Laker hater, I have to admit Kareem is the GOAT. Kareem consistently defeated Sixers and Celtics in the 80s.
Kareem was the greatest in high school, greatest in college ( Walton is only equal) , the greatest in the pros.
They even a change a rule because of Kareem.

@Ladon Simons If Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest he would not have lost to Bill Russell virtually everytime they played. Bill Russell also has more MVPs than Chamberlain. When Kareem Abdul-Jabbar came into the league, he dominated Chamberlain during their matchups. There is no doubt that Chamberlain was a great player, but he was not as good as Kareem, and it is debatable as to whether he was as good as Bill Russell.
@@anthonykyles4310 He would have won the 1980 Finals MVP if he wasn't injured for game 6, that is the game where Magic John started at Center and scored 42 points against Caldwell Jones and Daryll Dawkins, but Kareem was the best player in that series, he is the one who gave the Lakers the 3-2 advantage in the series. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Kareem was better than Jordan. I watched Kareem play in his prime, and watched Jordan's entre career. If Kareem was as selfish as Jordan was with the Basketball, he would have won more finals MVPs. But Kareem did not shoot as much as Jordan, and when he was doubled and tripled teamed, he passed the ball out of the triple team, to allow the team to get a better shot. Kareem knew that their was no I in Team.

I loved to watch him play his last few Laker seasons and he was still great,and my fave with Magic. A great player indeed.

Many accolades for Kareem but "Mister Hustle" would not be top ten one of them. No way am I saying he loafed just so many other things like unstoppable shot, great leader, clutch performer etc ...

Kareem and Dr J were the reasons I picked up a basketball at age 12. Kareem was such a versatile center, good passer and still is a very inspirational man. He even got me into jazz.

I was lucky enough to remember Kareem at his peak from '75-84. Dude was devastating in the post on Offense and Defense. If Blocks (and Steals) were recorded back in the 60's, I believe Wilt, Bill and Kareem would be 3rd , 2nd, 1st on the all time Blocks leaders list. No-one under 6'10" would enter the key without being contested by Kareem!!

@@jeromegarner7196 Johnny Arnett is an NBA statistician vlogger. I recall he did a video of crazy stats. The 76'ers had a statistician from the 60's that recorded blocks. Wilt was averaging over 5 bpg for a few seasons. It dropped off so his life time totals may be lower than Kareem, but his average compared to Mark Eaton. The Celtics had a similar sceanrio with Bill Russell averaging nearly 5 bpg for a longer period.
Kareem is not close to Hakeem in Blocks. Even if give Kareem average of his 3 best seasons in place of the ones they did not record blocks he is still behind Hakeem.
By the way…
Kareem got the scoring record almost entirely on 2-pointers and free throws (1-18 in his career).
LeBron James has 2,140 made three pointers while looking to break the record next season.

@@yaj2805 he shot less than 75% from the free throw line and 35% past 5 feet from the basket. If it's not layups and dunks he's so inefficient. LeBron was able to do the layups and dunks because of the spacing we have now and the touch fouls. You can see him dunk without any challenge

People talk about Magic carrying Kareem and as much as I love Magic Kareem made his job easier in the early years. Kareem's an underrated passer and defender as well and was stronger than he looked, yoga helped with flexibility also. Kareem averaged 21.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 6 games in the 1987 NBA Finals, second to last one.

I agree. Magic gets more love, I think, because he was gregarious and flashier. Most of the time, the ball went to Kareem for end game scenarios until the last couple of years.

None of LeBron's rings are impressive. It took a bailout miracle and Timmy choking a 2-foot bunny over 6'7" Shane Battier (while Shane hit 6 three's in that Game 7) for him to win in 2013 and Dray's BS suspension/Steph at 70%/Bogut injury/Iggy injury swayed that 2016 Finals. If he and AD don't get 5 months of rest in 2020 because of Covid-19, there's zero chance he wins that chip. His 2012 stretch from that 45-point game 6 in Boston to the Finals win over a dangerous OKC team is the most impressive month of his career. But why was he down 3-2 to the old Celtics big 3 with Wade and Bosh in the first place? And the Heat beat OKC 4-1 in large part because James Harden did his usual playoff choking routine. If 2012 WCF Harden showed up in the Finals, the Thunder probably win.

I'm a Patrick Ewing and Wilt fan. But Ewing got easily out scored by Hakeem, Shaq and David Robinson.
Ewing was the 4th best center of the 90s.
Wilt was faster than David Robinson. Can jump higher than any of them and is better passer and has more moves and better rebounder.
Wilt defended Kareem better than Hakeem, Ewing did.
Wilt would outscore any of Shaq,,Ewing, David Robinson and Hakeem.
Hakeem would give Wilt and Kareem the most trouble. Ewing would be outscored 27-30 to 15-19.
Wilt would have 40pt games on Ewing and so would Kareem.
Wilt gets back on defense better than any of them. VS Shaq Wilt would be able to use full strength without breaking a player.
Wilt would wear out Shaq by getting down court quicker on offense and his defense on Shaq.
Wilt would out PPG, RPG and APG all of them.
Hakeem or Wilt would be too 2 defenders our of all of them.

This was a great video. In HS I shot a running baby hook. I knew when to pick my spot especially being a lefty.
The sky hook was poetry in my view. Watching and listening to games called by Chick Hearn in that era was an honor especially growing up in LA. So many times under duress along the baseline, he would hit the sky hook from 17 feet out. Just incredible. If he was mad, then he would make them left handed which wasn't fair.
The last hight was awesome against Mark Eaton (UCLA alumn RIP). He did a James Worthy spin move along the baseline to finish with a dunk. Even today, that was impressive. All of these centers today thinking they're Steph Curry shooting 3's is painful to watch.
There were times when the Captain would play mad. Oh my God. I felt bad for the other team because he would bring the entire arsenal to the game. Hook shots, banking jump shots from 15 to 17 feel out. Blocking a shot and running the break. All in the same play.
As much as I loved Shaq with my Lakers, Kareem was my guy.
When they say you got to have great balance to make the hook shot, what they are implying is that you have to sacrifice athletic explosiveness for control and stability. A lot of players would get blocked unless they were taller and longer when fully outstretched off of a one legged hop than there fully outstretched opponent who's jumping with both legs.
Don’t know if that is truly accurate. Being only 5’ 11” I used to have a one hand push back pump shot in high school that was very hard to defend . Just saying.
Done right, it can be plenty explosive. I was pretty good offensively as a 6'3 power forward back in the day, and cultivated the hook shot because I didn't have a great vertical and loved Kareem. Usually undersized, I added a shoulder bump to the defender's chest as I pivoted in order to get the shot off, taking advantage of my leverage to create room. It looked ugly and would probably be considered an offensive foul in the current era's candy-assed perimeter-crazy basketball world, but it allowed me to be a reliable support scorer and got a TON of fouls called against the other team's bigs--usually lanky tall guys who were sure they could block a tree stump guy like me.
In Kareem's case, the sky hook could not be blocked. Once it left his hand, any "block" was goaltending. So the defenses options where 1) foul; 2)block it while it was in his hand (good luck); or 3) hope it didn't go in
The skyhook was unstoppable. He taught it to Majic Johnson.

I had the pleasure of watching Kareem from 76 until he retirement, and it's incredible what he did to the NBA. But the one thing that wasn't shown in this video, is that Kareem actually can shoot the hook shot with BOTH hands. Yes, BOTH hands, so I don't know why media outlets never show this about him. The reason Kareem never gets the respect that's due to him, is because as a converted muslim, he openly expressed his distaste for white people, so he became aloof and distant from media. That mindset ruined him from making millions of dollars in endorsements. In fact, Kareem could have been the one to lead black people into huge endorsement contracts had he had an open mind towards the media. But instead, it was given to Michael Jordan. Because you have to remember, Jordan entered the league when Kareem still had a few years to play under his belt, cable TV had already been introduced to the general public long before Jordan entered the league, so it wouldn't have been far fetched that Kareem could have been THAT guy. So this notion that LeBron James is in the same sentence with Kareem, is absolutely ridiculous, he can't even sit in the same room with Kareem.
Why are you attacking LeBron. On the court, he is clearly on a level that very few players have ever been on, and he's been there for a very long time.

He was routinely on the All Defense Team & Most impressively (to me) is that while relying mainly on his hook shot esp. late in his career, his FG% is 55.9% for TWENTY YEARS!!! He never needed to orchestrate so called super team's & ALWAYS represented The NBA, & the USA with class. I grew up loving Pete Maravich & Dr. J. & D. KAJ was dominant not only as a high schooler but a collegian and obviously a pro. He was 1st team all nba his rookie year and took an expansion franchise to the championship and league mvp his second year. NO ONE has done that.
This is never discussed or brought up. Factor in he played against the greatest at his position through the entirety of his career. From Wilt to Ewing. Only great center he didn’t play against was Mikan, Russ and Shaq

Kareem was not only a great player, he inspired his teammates BOTH on and off the court. He handled his life and the press with wisdom and care .He scholar and a martial artist.
Not that it matters to anyone but my former supervisor and ex- NBA player, Quintin Dailey(a very good and kind man, may he rest in peace), used to tell us all about the NBA and its players and meticulously detailed why Kareem was the greatest player in NBA history.
I remember watching Kareem when he played with Milwaukee Bucks back in the early 70's with Oscar Robertson and Kareem would go baseline or into the paint Oscar would pass the ball to him and that skyhook was automatic . I swear it seemed he never missed. If the game was close or they were losing by a point, you knew who the ball was going to and the other team couldn't stop what was going to happen . He's the greatest of all time without a doubt .

Lew and the Bucks were my team. It was amazing to watch those battles with Wilt. Nobody was supposed to show him up and frustrate the hell out of him. Enjoy that time. Lakers, Knicks, Bullets. ABA was very entertaining, too. And those runs that UCLA had........seriously!!

Hook is a great shot! You don’t have to stop and coil up both hands so you can exploit pretty much any shot window with it against similar size or slightly taller defenders. Mine looked a lot more like Magic’s baby hook, much flatter arc than Cap’s Sky hook. When it was falling, I was a little bit of a menace on the playground! Like the finger roll, the hook requires your touch to be spot on. If I wasn’t feeling it (and that happened a lot), I would stick to outside jumpers and maybe a quick drive into the key for the lefty floater.

Kareem’s basketball career is unparalleled. My father used to go watch Kareem warm up before the games. He said he would hit 10 in a row with his right hand way out on the baseline (right inside where the 3pt line would be), then go to the other baseline and hit 10 with his left hand. Scary precision.
Being only 42 he was before my time but I love watching him play in videos like this. Much respect.

The sky hook was actually much more popular during kareems era than many vids lead the viewer to believe.
The shot was used alot on the playgrounds and actually very practical for any player height. We played much more physically and lots of kids imitated kareems back in/ bump and either quick turn or two step to get closer to or fade out from the hole.
We also used the front arm to stiff arm or shove down the defender/enemy. To be honest i cant remember a street game without some blood and bruises in the 70s-80s, it was part of the game. I think even kareem would say it was both a physical contact shot and a deft touch amidst the contact.

Yea, diff eras and positions makes it kinda pointless, beyond that...alot of players contribute the most in ways that don't result in as many stats or chips.. so it's certainly not fair, esp on those players.

game 3 in portland the 2nd round of the 83 playoffs. the lakers are up 2-0 in the series but the blazers are making this a game. in OT with the shot clock winding down magic passes to kareem 16 or so feet from the basket. in one motion (because he was running) kareem catches the ball and goes for the skyhook. nothing but net! he runs back up the court laughing. he turns sees magic coming and they start pointing at each other and they high five! that was a moment!
The Kareem story I'll always remember was the fire in his home which destroyed a large number of his precious jazz record collection. I think he had over five thousand LPs. Last I read, he was able to recover some of them through friends and generous donors, but I don't know what else happened after that...

Thx to Kareem. I stole his technic, as i was much younger and shorter, then the guys, i was battling on the court. I trained the hook over and over and over. But when i figured it out, i shot over 60% of them and that shifted my on a level, i could compete with much stronger guys. As i loved playing defense anyways, that was a great time.

We had a guy on our HS team that was a HUGE KAJ fan. He would jack up Sky Hooks from anywhere. Opposing teams noticed this, and their fans would yell "skyhook"! And this guy would try that shot. Finally the coach had to bench him cause he was costing us games with his constant SkyHooks

I watched Kareem play and dominate in college and the pros. He is incredibly intelligent and has written several books. Kareem does not engage in the stupid “Who’s the number one player of all time” because of his humility and intelligence. No one knows what is going to unfold in the next 500 or 1,000 years? I had the great privilege of seeing him play in person a few times when he played with the Lakers and he was more amazing in person than on TV. He played a long time and was fun to watch except when played the Celtics my team.
The reason no one does the sky hook you need to be a phenomenal athlete to do it consistently at different distances. The Goat. Points leader without 3 pointers. Team leader by example. Sorry MJ, Lebron, Kobe, Bill Russell, and Wilt.

Curry deserves more respect than he gets. For some reason, many commentators denigrate Curry's accomplishments for playing a few seasons with KD, a top 15 all time player, but don't hold it against Magic for playing with a top 3 all-timer in Kareem.

Another center who's shot you couldn't guard was Jack Sikma. He held the ball well above his head, and short it from there.

I think Kareem was one of a hand full of mount Rushmore basketball quality players throughout the history of the game. However, I disagree with Dr. J regarding him calling Kareem the greatest GOAT. Wilt Chamberlain was a much more prolific rebounder and shot blocker. As a Matter of fact Wilt finished with several thousand more lifetime rebounds playing 7 less seasons 13 to 20. When watching the 72 semi-finals, I watched an aging Wilt Chamberlain out play Kareem when it counted, leading the Lakers to victory over the Bucks in 6 games. He Held Kareem to 47% shooting from the field when his season avg was 55%. He blocked 11 shots in that deciding game including 5 against Kareem. He out rebounded kareem as well. Bill Russell put it bluntly doing color commentary stated "The Lakers are scared of Kareem, but the Bucks are absolutely terrified of Wilt". That about sums it up. Kareem also never played against Wilt in his prime if you could imagine that scenario. Yes Kareem scored more points lifetime, but needed more games to surpass Wilt. Wilt holds more NBA records than any other player in history[ including Jordan and LeBron] some 49 years after he played his last game in 73. Wilt has been a victim of time forgetting his amazing exploits on the court, but make no mistake he was the most dominant player the game has ever seen. He is the GOAT.
Kareem is likely the leading shot blocker of the NBA as well. If statistics is the bar for goat then Kareem is a lock with a good argument for Wilt Chamberlain in that conversation. That's it because defense is a statistic that many forget about. Kareem is tops in both accounts. He has six championships and the most MVPs in NBA history in an era that she has faced more NBA Hall of famers than any other player in history. So of all of the highest concentration of Hall of famers he still tops them all. So someone humbly passing his scoring title next year falls a little short in my opinion of automatically dismissing Kareem's many other milestones, MVPs and at least two more championships under his belt. To add, if this was about championships which really is the only thing that matters, then Bill Russell is the most disrespected man in the NBA.
Kareem came in the NBA when he was 22 so no one can really pass his scoring total because if he comes in the NBA like Lebron and Kobe at 18 he would have roughly 46000 total points not 38000 plus and that fact further proves his greatness.
HE Was Alright Even That Shot Was Alright
I remember the one play where Jerry Lucas blocked Kareem's sky hook but was called for a foul because no one could ever conceive a 6'8" power forward would even coming close to blocking that shot. Cost my Knicks the game but Jerry did block that shot clean. I played countless number of games of basketball using the hook shot when defended by taller players and they would tell you the hook shot will make a 5' midget turn into a 6'5' giant. No one plays with their backs to the basket any more and the shot has faded into history just like the calls of up and down or walk.
Rodman blocked him twice in a row; skyhook ,then jumper. Kareem was in his 40’s. pistol.

Kareem is the GOAT. Hands down. This video is one of the reasons people only know him for the hook shot and not his full game and dominance at every level. The one last highlight at the end showed him fake the hook and spin baseline and jam. And that was in his twilight years. Not to mention he went head to head against other all time greats like everyone in the early days like Wilt and Walton, up through some the last of the great centers like Hakeem.
