Mr. Jabbar is DEFINITELY underrated. Kareem's scoring is known, but folks forget his passing abilities. Kareem has more assists than the great Michael Jordan. Arvydas Sabonis is considered the greatest passer, yet Kareem has higher averages in assists than Sabonis' career in both the NBA and FIBA. The sky hook was lethal, but Kareem could do it all. Greatest HS, College, and Pro career. Greatness and longevity. Sadly, he didn't have the greatest relationship with the media during his career. I can't fault him for that due to the civil rights movement. Magic never won without Kareem. Big O never won without Kareem. It took years until the Big O Oscar Robertson finally won. Kareem won early and late in his entire career. In Kareem's 2nd year, he won it all for the Bucks. And at the age of 37 years old, Kareem won the Finals MVP. AT 37, Kobe was limping and out of the league where as Kareem won the Finals MVP. Sadly, folk remember Kareem in his 40s, but Kareem in his 20s was deadly.
jordan averaged about 2 more assists than kareem. kareem just played for a lot longer. obviously both are good passers but its silly to imply that kareem is a better passer than michael jordan because he has a larger assist total, just like how it would be silly to imply that hes a better scorer because he has a higher point total. also kobe was elite up until his achilles injury, which was mostly jsut a bad luck and overuse injury. he was averaging 38.6 minutes in that season, kareem got away with 33 min or less in his later years. if it wasnt for that achilles injury, we would probably have been marvelling at kobes longevity for at least a few more years. theyre all great players but your comparisons are really not fair to other players.
kareem "got away" with playing other 7 footers in his career. as a 38 year old slacker he won the nba finals mvp. playing against that other slacker robert parish for 7 games.
its just a fact that in kobes 17th season (when he tore his achilles), he was averaging almost 39 minutes on a really dysfunctional lakers team struggling to get to the playoffs. in kareems 17th season, he only averaged 33 minutes, playing alongside a prime magic johnson. i dont understand how you cant comprehend that these 2 situations are vastly different, and almost certainly contributed to kobes injury.

@Sudhir Kakar The thread that you are responding to was making the case the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the most unstoppable offensive force ever. Wilt Chamberlain was the most unstoppable offensive force ever. Now if you want to argue championships, that's a different discussion.
@Sudhir Kakar the original thread made no mention about being Unstoppable. It only referred to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar being the greatest offensive Force the league has ever seen. That's not true. In addition, you say that Wilt Chamberlain never contended for a title in both college and Pros until he decided to stop scoring with the 76ers in 1967. That is blatantly untrue. Wilt Chamberlain was named the NCAA tournament Player of the Year in 1957 when his Kansas Jayhawks lost the National Championship in triple overtime to the North Carolina Tar Heels. In addition, Chamberlain made several trips to the NBA Eastern Conference Finals in the early 60s with both the Philadelphia Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers. He also competed for the NBA Championship in 1964 as a member of the San Francisco Warriors.
He is the most under rated player in the history of the game. Kareem is without a doubt the greatest center and one of the top 5 greatest players overall .
Had the honor to watch him play as Lew Alcindor at UCLA in my youth. Enjoyed every game at Pauly Pallivion in the 60's! To this day he's number one in my book.
Seeing Kareem makes me want to watch some highlights of his amazing career.I think its he and Wilt and Russell and everyone else when it comes to big men.
That was great. I saw him at Brown Port shopping center when I was a kid and he had just joined the Bucks. I’ve always admired him as a human being and a man as well as an athlete. If I could meet one basketball player I know who I would want it to be. We’d probably talk about jazz.
I have a question. why only 2 finals mvps? also centers need some one to get them the ball, hard to be the goat if you cant even get the ball up the court your self, especially at end of games. For the record i'm pretty sure the last part is Jalen rose statement (2 points down time winding down catch the ball 90 feet away, oh shit I cant dribble)
One of the best interviews I ever saw. Kareem is keenly articulate, transparent and humble yet stands up for his rights and defends his point of view. His insight is uncanny, he confidently explains the loneliness of Coach Wooden's loss of his wife....with certainty. He has the psychological power of Dostoyevsky and no doubt would KNOW what I mean and agree with me...or give me a tremendous different point of view....the guy is intellectual...who woulda thunked it???? My hero. God bless this gently wonderful man. And kudos to Dan for making me feel i was sitting right there.
Coach Wooden is smiling down on this interview, what a humble giant of a man, if I have children who grow up wanting to play basketball, Kareem and John Stockton will be the men I would want them to admire and respect. Excellent interview.
I have only been to one NBA game in my life, but it was a doozy, Lakers versus hawks in the late 80s. At halftime when the players were loosening up I snuck down by the floor and got within about 50 feet of Kareem while he was doing stretches. It was so awesome just to be that close. It still gives me chills to think about
Kareem is a class act and was a fantastic athlete and basketball player. I saw him go up against Bill Walton in 1977 in Portland when the Lakers had the best record in the league. I was watching, and I didn’t realize it at the time, two of the greatest centers ever to play the game go head on in their prime. It was fantastic and the blazers winning the title, I will never forget!
In the 1980's Mr. Abdul-Jabbar was a guest on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He was asked who was the greatest athlete had ever seen. His response was very surprising, even to himself, because it was someone not in his sport. His answer: Roberto Clemente, right fielder extraordinaire of the Pittsburgh Pirates. As I recall his response, he noted Clemente's grace chasing a fly ball.
MrAitraining Earl changed part of the game, the way he would back defenders down under the goal, then finally w one last fake, lay it up. Then changed the rules to limit that. Will have to youtube him.
I grew up in So Cal in the late 50s, 60s and the 70s. Great time for following the teams of both the college and pros. USC had 10 natl championships in baseball from '58 to '78. Football champs in '62, '67, '72, '74 and '78. Dodgers in the World Series in '59 (W), '63(W), '65 (W), '66(L), '74(L), '77(L) '78(L)damn Yankees and '81 (W) YEAH. Lakers in the NBA Finals seven times and lost them all, damn Celtics. Finally won in '72. Rams were so-so until late '60s and late '70s They held their summer practices at my high school during the '60s. Finally the Bruins. UCLA won 10 Natl Championships from '63 to '75. Kareem and I are the same age and I was lucky enough to see him play twice his freshman season. First was when I had a college wrestling meet held at UCLA , between prelims and the finals the BruBabes played. What the freshman team was called. Then later at Fullerton Jr College they played against Walt Simon, a local phenom whos son Miles played for Arizonas Natl Champ. Yes Lew Alcindor became a very great player.
LMAO not from what I have researched he was the opposite of that a white person hater or racist as it is called now a Whiner and petty mean-spirited wife abuser and all-around moody jerk who was a first-class narcissist like him all you want I sure as hell do not!
Kareem was always the best player on every team he was on. From his days at UCLA, to Milwaukee to the Lakers. Maybe u think that the big O was better or Magic but that would be untrue. As for Michael, well I think that you can make a case for both but I think that Kareem throughout the course of his entire career was more impactfull and unstoppable and fucking better.....
+kissmygrits but the statement is not who was the best on any given team, it was who is the best of all time!!!! After all the dust settles maybe Magic was better than Kareem in 85 or 88 or 87 but Kareems entire career vs. Magic is the issue. Jordan perhaps but he took years off and was mediocre in the beginning and was not relevant in college. Kareem was an integral part of the team every single year he played at every level....
+kissmygrits well all I can say is that you like Mike and I like KAJ. Maybe it's because I grew up watching him in NY and then at UCLA where I lived, I don't know. There were no KAJ "rules" and he was the ultimate team player. Never had a serious injury, never took years off, never got old and fat but continued to play and never had a bad thing said about him unless it was that he was not press friendly. Can't blame him for that. KAJ had to fight against his success while MJ bathed in his success. If u looks at stats they were both dominant. You may not understand the nuance of what I am saying but many others do. We will agree to disagree because I have had this discussion before and MJ is and will always be one of the greatest BB players ever. But for me KAJ is the best ever in the span of a career. If you ask Magic he will without hesitation say "Cap".
+MD Honze Although I don't know if I would say he is the greatest, I wouldn't argue either. I do think he is short changed, as he rarely makes most people's top 5. He should be in everyone's top 3, at least.
Finals MVP at age 38! Still the oldest to accomplish that and unbelievable numbers in his career. Kareem has been and unfortunately probably will always be underrated when it comes to the GOAT discussion.
i have never seen anyone handle a ball the way earl "the pearl" monroe....could....it looked like the ball was part of him...so smooth....just unreal and if you ever saw him in person you know what i mean
I know he hated the cold weather, but I’ve never let Kareem leave Milwaukee! You’ve seen how many NBA championships the Bucks have won with and without Kareem; one with, none since. However, I do appreciate that one! Thanks Kareem!

For the record i'm pretty sure the last part is Jalen rose statement (2 points down time winding down catch the ball 90 feet away, oh shit I cant dribble)
Frank Smith
One of the best centers in the history of the NBA
But he’ll take a back seat to Bill Russell
Won nba title 6 times
Great Interview
Kareem is the Greatest Basketball Player Ever is stats speak volumes.
Beautiful
Coach Wooden is smiling down on this interview, what a humble giant of a man, if I have children who grow up wanting to play basketball, Kareem and John Stockton will be the men I would want them to admire and respect. Excellent interview.
Respect
John Stockton huh
Kareem is so well spoken.
What a fascinating human being this man is, forget his basketball prowess...
Excellent interview! Kareem
What an extraordinary person . Could listen to him all day .
I love you Kareem. A big fan of you from Turkiye...
My all time favorite center. Even though he was a laker
No one interviews better than Dan Patrick.
How often do you hear quotes from Airplane?
Kareem: Every time I go threw the airport.
LOL
Love the earl monroe story "jesus!" lol
MrAitraining Earl changed part of the game, the way he would back defenders down under the goal, then finally w one last fake, lay it up. Then changed the rules to limit that. Will have to youtube him.
What a great man
What a class act.
ABSOLUTELY no competition-Kareem is undoubtedly the GOAT,case closed!
Who knew Kareem is a baseball lover. That is great!
Best Basketball player who ever played. Most points scored ever in MBA.
Great player. Humble Man! Special
He’s like the nicest guy in the world!! Great human being.
LMAO not from what I have researched he was the opposite of that a white person hater or racist as it is called now a Whiner and petty mean-spirited wife abuser and all-around moody jerk who was a first-class narcissist like him all you want I sure as hell do not!
I may be eaten alive here but I think that Kareem is the best player of all time and there is no-one even close!!!! Take that!!!...lol
+kissmygrits ok so ur a racist!!! peace our bro...
+MD Honze Although I don't know if I would say he is the greatest, I wouldn't argue either. I do think he is short changed, as he rarely makes most people's top 5. He should be in everyone's top 3, at least.
GOAT… on and off the court. Kareem has always been a deep well
All these years later, I still treasure those 1980's watching Bird, Magic and Kareem. What an era!
Nice respect to Earl the pearl from kareem....He was a badass!
Finals MVP at age 38! Still the oldest to accomplish that and unbelievable numbers in his career. Kareem has been and unfortunately probably will always be underrated when it comes to the GOAT discussion.
always an interesting person
I shook his hand after a game one time.....I was only 12 years old and his name was still Lew Alcinder.
i have never seen anyone handle a ball the way earl "the pearl" monroe....could....it looked like the ball was part of him...so smooth....just unreal and if you ever saw him in person you know what i mean
I know he hated the cold weather, but I’ve never let Kareem leave Milwaukee! You’ve seen how many NBA championships the Bucks have won with and without Kareem; one with, none since. However, I do appreciate that one! Thanks Kareem!
A great man as well as a great ball player. We need people like Kareem in the world now more than ever.
Abdul is an absolute class act
Great player and great man.
7:30 mark Pete Newell... "Big Man Camp". When he was running that basically every PF and C in the league would go to Hawaii for it. One of the Coaching Greats.
The best player for me will always be Wilt Chamberlain, I would pick him in any case. He was always my first choice
I remember when he was Lew Alcindor at UCLA.
I now see why God allowed him and others to be so great. The greatest lessons are off the court.
The true King 👑 of the game.
He will forever be my choice for G.O.A.T.
Best ever, especially closing games
William MacDonald lol 😂
LOVED KAREEM BILL RUSSELL LARRY BIRD MAGIC & MJ AS WELL AS HONDO JERRY WEST OSCAR BILL WALTON & PISTOL PETE!!!!!!!!
