  • NOTE: As with all of my older videos, I feel that this video is not representative of my modern skills, knowledge, or tools. However, I leave them online to show the development and learning process. This video does show the basic approach to 'damage control' and can still yield a fixed laptop, but keep in mind that this isn't the be-all and end-all of repair methods.
Supplemental update: Unfortunately despite the fact that I did get the laptop running again, there was still permanent damage to the logic board that caused the same symptoms as overheating - CPU speed throttling back to useless, and emergency fan speed. I did record another video covering this, but the job was a bust, so I ended up binning the video.
However, this method for cleaning up laptops does still offer a fair success rate, so I'm leaving this video up.
Original Post: Clean up job on a liquid damaged MacBook Pro - includes Logic Board removal and cleanup procedure.

+Anesu Chimkupete it is but I replaced the logic board at a local shop for $580. It went back to randomly restarting a day after cleaning so I figured I'd spend the money

LyrixandLicks302 I have a MacBook Pro that just got soda spilled onto it but I haven't attempted this since I don't have the screw driver to open it, I have another mac (MacBook Air) that also got soda spilled onto it, I took it to Apple and once they looked at the damage they said it would be 900 to repair (which is the exact amount it costs to buy a new one) I ended up taking it home, months later I randomly had an idea to try to start it and well it worked! Although it needs to stay connected to the charger for it to stay on otherwise it turns off as soon as it is disconnected. I really wish I can fix my MacBook Pro though, I have very important data on it. :c

Rey Arias your message is 4months old so I don't know if this will help you but the info is just on your hard drive so you most likely have not lost it. Also, you can easily replace the battery and have it working without the power cord. If you don't know how to do it, just look it up online. There are many videos and articles showing how to do it. Hope this helps you. Have a good one :)

Thank you, this video helped relieve a lot of stress. I spilled coffee on my wife’s Mac. To be more specific, I spilled it on the table but the coffee flowed right into the air vents. Picked it up, turned it over and coffee was just dripping out. Let it dry and it would not turn on. Light was dim on charger and would also start blinking yellow green. if I tried to power it on. I followed the instructions on the video and I was able to restore it using the existing battery. Thanks once again!

Great great video. Thanks so much. Apple Store quoted $1200.00 to replace my logic board just for one small corrosion spot from minimal water damage. I was having a problem with it restarting itself randomly at times. I'm cracking this baby open and cleaning.

Well done video thanks for sharing. After a water spill the corrosion on the mother board was severe and I tried to clean it. Unfortunately the tooth brush broke a capacitor. Bought a new logic board and still no power on. In the end it was the DC in board that was preventing boot up even though the charge light was green. Battery or not even disconnected it wouldn't boot. Replaced the DC in and worked straight off.

I took it to the apple store three weeks ago and they opened it. They sent me pictures of where the liquid have reached and I think it reached the logic board. However, it works totally fine and it only says for the battery "replace now". That's why it needs to be plugged in order for it to work. Do you think I need to replace the logic board?

Hi Adamant IT, spilled Coke Zero on my keyboard of my pro last night. Turned it upside down and dried for a few hours (it was powering on and working fine) before taking the back panel off. Saw Coke drops under the battery but nowhere else so far. Took out the hard drive too but just realized I don't have the star screwdriver to pop out the logic board. Don't see any visible damage though. Should I get the screwdriver and keep going or leave the system as is?

Hi Adamant IT! I just spilled monster energy drink on my macbook pro. When it happened, the laptop turned off about 2 secs later. I quickly cleaned up the liquid off the the laptop and let it dry. I then was able to turn the laptop in and it was working fine with no problems. After a while I put my plugged my laptop charger in and i noticed that it was not charging. At first the charger had its normal orange light but it would not charge. After a while, the light went out completely and the laptop would not charge at all. What do u think the problem is? Would cleaning the inside help? Or will i need a new battery maybe? Hey Adamant IT, I just watched your video which rased hope in me that I can fix my MacBook alone. One week ago I spilled wine on my brand new McBook Retina 2015 (2 months old) a glass of wine. I let it dry for 5 days and than I went to Apple Store, they told me that there is a liquid on the Board, Hardware, Screen etc, so it would cost 1 200 €, which is nonsense considering that i bought it for 1 400 €. What drove me crazy was that fact they told me I need a new screen, but they even didn´t tried if it works, turned out it actually works. Upset and completely lost trust in Apple I started looking for other options. What do I loose at the end, my Mac doesn´t work anyway, so I eyther fix it alone or buy a new one.
So my question is, wine damage could be cleaned just the same way you did fix the water damage on this Mac, couldn´t it?
Can you give me some advice, I really need to save that laptop, I was savig money for two years, so I can afford it...

I took my macbook 2009 to get looked at, it got nail polish remover on the keyboard and the screen stopped turning on even tho the charger was green. They said it damaged the motherboard and might cost 500 to fix. Then the only person that worked on mac products quit, so no one could fix it. So they told us to pick it up. So we took it home.
So I found this video and looked aty macbook and they had a loose screw inside the macbook and had components loose and not connected inside. It made me upset. Also it looks like they tore off a piece which is now broken when it wasn't before. The piece they broke was near what you were messing with at 13:08
Should I ignore what they did or should they be held accountable for messing it up further?

By accident I started up the boot up process a bit later but immedietly powered it off before it officially was on. There wasnt that much tea spilled on it, wasnt a complete cup or anything but im pretty sure some liquid seeped through the keyboard. So my question is what kind of damage I can expect, even if there arent immediate problems is it guaranteed im screwed down the road? Hi Adam, My daughter spilled water on a week old macbook pro dec 2015. Apple said the water indicator did not show up however quoted over £1000 to replace. I have just now taken it to a local computer store and they have said the logic board showed signs of a lot of water damage and quoted £645 to replace. Do you think I should try this method before agreeing to a new logic board..? Thank you for a fantastic video by the way..

Maybe a teethbrush can save a $400 logic board? :-O
    Gonna try that soon.

Hello thank you for your video I recently spilled water on my computer and tried to power it back on it was plugged in and once I unplugged it it powered off I'm wondering if trying to power back on has caused any more damage that couldn't be fixed with the toothbrush and glass cleaner technique let me know or is it worth giving it a try I hope so because your Technique seemed pretty straightforward anyways thank you

First step is to take the back cover off and use a paper towel to make sure there's no standing liquid. Once you're sure it's dry, you may as well plug it in and try turning it on - if there's no liquid, it's not going to break any more than it already has done.
If it doens't come good, then start attempting repairs.

Spilled milk on top of keyboard. Cleaned it off, before turning it off. Turned it off, turned it back on. Worked fine for a little while. Then, the command and shift keys started to turn "on". I restarted it, but it booted into safe mode since shift was constantly being held. Webpages had pieces missing, couldn't see what was in Google search bar. Turned off, isn't turning back on. Help!

    Hello. I need a help with a macpro motherboard a1398 820-00146
I have 2 capacitors burned near the chip thunderbolt u2800
    The chip is not working
The computer turns on, emits sound, displays video via the hdmi port, but does not display an image on the retina display. The thunderbolt doors and the usbs doors on the left do not work.
    My questions are:
Are these problems caused by the u2800 component or should I start looking for another faulty part? If anyone can help me with this question I thank

Adamant IT yes I spilled milk on my Keyboard and the Apple Store said the batteries, logic board, and hard drive needed to be replaced so I'm assuming that's where most of the damage is. I know you only cleaned your logic board but would this same method work for the battery?

    • @arvindsurya2046
      @arvindsurya2046 Před 7 lety +1

Adamant IT basically when the milk spilled, the computer automatically turned off. I made the idiot move of turning it back on, but when I did I got a black screen with a file with a question mark on it. Does that mean the hard drive is damaged?

hello again! i opened up the A1502, disconnected the battery, plugged it in, but the small light still flashes the orange/amber light. its possible that the battery has to stay connected to further troubleshoot. this video i want to watch a couple of times. thanks again, it might also be the adaptor (magsafe to magsafe2) that might not be functioning properly. thanks
