  • Hi, here we have a MacBook Pro 2019 model with a touch bar that has suffered a Beer spill. It is the A1989 model and I purchased it faulty from eBay. Can it be fixed? Let's find out.

    FYI for future attempts: Under the apple menu, select "about this Mac" In the window that comes up, click on System Report. That'll give you a view into the hardware the OS is aware of. So for example you might see that the internal display isn't showing up in the device tree.

    Hey Vince, When you were measuring the resistors next to the Backlight conector you were getting a short circuit on one side, Resistor don't short which means that there is a short on the rail. check the corespondent components associate with that rail. Maybe a shorted capacitor.

    • @thetechgenie7374
      @thetechgenie7374 Před 2 lety +11

      It is likely a open resistor, I had same issue and measure a short pretty much even though wasn't any short and capacitors tested fine out of circuit, but rail only measure 2 volts. It protection when that sense resistor goes open. I almost gave up and actually assume display was bad, replaced resistor and display and keyboard backlight came back to life. I fix another but had bad capacitors a couple giveaway if they crack, or darker then others and mosfets were to CPU were also bad and charging commucation bus IC but it had more liquid damage. Yes good idea to check capacitors in area as well.
      Yes fan will go full speed and display won't display anything, or be detected. It has protection sense circuit on these, which I didn't even know at the time and almost assume was screwed. I actually replaced driver which did nothing and almost bought a display, which would have been a waste of money as they are expensive. I glad I decided to look at schematic and give it another go at it.

      Thanks for the help, on the left hand side resistor (R8502) the left pad is a ground and the right side goes straight under the CPU. The right hand resistor (R8503) which from memory is the one causing the short also goes straight under the CPU on the left side pad, BUT the right side pad does go to other components so I suppose there is a chance one of the other components is shorting it down to ground...Hmmmmm I will have to look into this again. Thank you!!! 👍👍👍

    Likely a open resistor by backlight driver usually the r8440 1m for sense line goes bad or blown driver. It actually cut out whole display off not just backlight, It is surprisingly a common issue come across on these when water damage. I almost assume display was bad till I only saw only 2v coming out of driver and found almost short across resistor which turns out wasn't shorted but causing protection to kick in which drop the rail down for some reason, their wasn't any shorted components, capacitors and driver was fine surprisingly, replaced opened resistor clean corrosion off board and fixed it, display came back to life and was using it for a year till I sold it to a coworker and got myself a 16 inch M1 You are luckly it didn’t take out mosfets which is also common with these. My lovely U2 Cooper a bird knock a cup of coffee on backside which is what killed it and charging IC that communicate on the bus.
    Hopefully display itself is still good likely is as you tried other one and didn’t work.Your right the flex cable break on these is another issue. Even then a good price as board doesn’t show much damage and can likely easily be repaired.

      I wonder if the backlight chip does screen and keyboard at the same time. I find it very weird both stopped working. Also you need a really bright light for backlight problems. I had to use a really strong light after lesser ones before i could see any image.

    Hey Vince, when you hear the fans kicking in full blast it's always a sensor issue, most likely a resistor somewhere needs replacing. They don't short out, their value will just increase causing sense lines to report back incorrect readings hence the fans running at 100%! You have the boardview and the schematics, check all the resistors around the area where you noticed liquid damage.

    • @janhanchenmichelsen2627
      @janhanchenmichelsen2627 Před 2 lety +1

      I guess you can use MacFans control or similar, then just choose a working sensor. I did this after swapping some disks with FAR cheaper non-apple SSDs lacking the orginal temp sensors. I picked "average core", set a conservative number for the fans to really spin up. Monitored fan behaviour and temperatures during some hard CPU and graphic card work, was satisfied that temp never creeped above 80-90C even during full load on CPU (rendering, export of GIGANTIC pdf-files, like a 40 m2 banner with rastered images). This has been working without a hitch on several desktops and laptops for years.

    Great video. I am not an Apple person but I wanted to start learning about them even though I won't be converting overall. I bought one working 13 inch mid-2012 macbook pro in order to see what Apples are about. I replaced the spinning drive with an ssd and replaced the DVD drive with a second hard drive and maxed out the ram to 16gb. It works just great and then I bought an aluminum stand for it to put behind an external monitor (27 inch) and it now runs with the lid closed with an external bluetooth keyboard and a usb mouse. It is like having a 27 inch imac. I liked it so much that I bought another and upgraded the same way. I just love the construction of these laptops. I actually like having the huge external display so you'd be well served on yours to give yourself some larger screen real estate and then to use the laptop with the lid closed. You've got yourself a true pleasure right there. So nice to see people take someone's cast off and to repurpose!

    I used to fix cash registers back when the dinosaurs roamed (70's and 80's). Lots of machines soaked in beer. You have to use water to clean as alcohol won't dissolve the sugar, which is the real culprit. More than once I washed a board in the bar sink and then walked down the street to a hairdresser to borrow a hair dryer to blow the water out and dry it off. That cured it more often than not.

    • @SidneyCritic
      @SidneyCritic Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah I would totally wash the whole MB for that same reason. I've seen liquid damage repairs, and with thick liquids sometimes you have to remove chips to clean under them.

    • @thatdude5104
      @thatdude5104 Před 2 lety +1

      For anyone else that cleans up liquiddamage from sodas or other sugary drinks: you can (usually) wash boards with water as long as there isnt any power in it. Make sure there isnt power stored in caps too!! After that you can soak the board in IPA to dissolve the water instead of drying it with a blowdryer. That way the conducting minerals in the water dont remain on the board.

    Real shame this one wasnt fixable. Really love watching your journey on each fix. I think you learned quite a bit from this one. Really bad design. Even if that connector had to be as made, you'd think they would then add some water protection from that particular area. Given the cost of these, how hard would it be to put a waterproof membrane under the whole keyboard with a liquid exit hole out the side of the case so a spill just went straight out?

After that it started spinning fine and didn’t have an issue anymore. Maybe the beer got to the fan and got the little spindle a bit stuck and the second fan notices that the other fan isn’t working so it’s spinning faster to try to maintain the coolness. try opening up the fan and put a little oil

Send it to Louis Rossmann and have the CPU exchanged, still worth it if that's the only issue, but maybe it's something less expensive. Maybe there's some sense pin to enable the internal display... some sensor(s) are definitely bad in there as the fan is full on, that's a sure sign.

    The keyboard backlight control is not enabled because computer isn't detecting ambiet light sensor which is near the camera and as a result it disables the keyboard backlight at all. And about the audio control when you are connected to a display trough HDMI it outputs audio trough HDMI too and it cant control HDMI audio volume so from outputs options choose internal speakers and volume control would work just fine.

    Display circuit issue, fan is ramped up because the display has a temp sensor that the computer can no longer read, due to the faulty line. it’ll probably be in limp mode like the previous MacBook you repaired until it can detect that screen temp sensor again.

    I wonder if it would be possible to reroute the outgoing signal on the usbc (that you're using for external display) back to the internal one, bypassing the faulty cpu part. Basically converting the built in display to a one that would either take a usbc or mini hdmi input. It would still have to be supplied power of course. Just a thought that might be totally impossible lol.

    Maybe replace the ribbon cable between the motherboard and display driver board that clearly had issues ...

    100% the resistor because resistors don't short so u should check the resistors near the back-light chip

    Hi Vince check the mux chip U9850 as if voltage spat back to the display circuit most probably killed the U9850. U9850 is what is between the screen and the CPU and GPU

      Thanks Stan, as far as I am aware on this 13" model it goes directly to the CPU. On the 15" it goes via the mux chip because of the separate GPU 👍👍👍

    If it runs without the screen connected at all. I’d be tempted to remove the screen to use on another MacBook and keep this as a sort of all in one keyboard + computer without the screen in the way. Or put it in a cupboard as a home server for things like Plex, a web server, Pi Hole server, whatever you like.

    Was this a failed OC/OV attempt? For a "beer spill", there was surprisingly little damage anywhere. Especially since beer is going to cause an absolute mess internally, even if it was "just a bit".
    Especially odd that part of the CPU died out, how did that happen from a spill? Sounds like what happens when you OC/OV too much and a pin or chip inside literally burns out.
