Apple WANTED £460 to FIX this MacBook - Can I FIX it for less?

  • Apple wanted £460 to fix this MacBook or offered £40 to recycle it. The original owner Mike didn't accept either offer and asked me if I wanted it for a video. The back story with this A1706 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is as follows... It has had very little use and only charged approx. 20 times. When Mike went to charge it up recently to donate to a newly arrived Ukrainian family in his local village it didn't charge up, hence the reason it ended up on the blue mat. Can I fix it for less than £460?

    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    Spoiler Saver and Riddle.
    Many thanks to Mike for allowing a video to be made on this AND donating it.
    Riddle - Jimmy has to choose between 3 rooms.
    The 1st is full of raging fires.
    The 2nd is full of assassins with loaded guns.
    The 3rd is full of lions that haven't eaten in 2 years.
    Which room is safest for Jimmy?

    Regarding your query about the PPBUS_G3H vs PPBUS_HS_CPU, they are connected via R5400 which is a current-sense resistor, so yes, they're effectively the same rail in this instance. It's a bit of a pain that it's not always easy to represent that interconnection between two rails; invariably in features I've written in the past for FlexBV when I try to do "next network connected..." it turns in to an incomprehensible visual mess :(

      @Keltic D Stop kissing the Apple boot.
      Apple won't let you order individual components if you want to repair your broken logic board, they don't let you get hold of schematics so that you can troubleshoot your device.
      They actively tell companies to ONLY sell them chips etc, so that even if you wanted to repair your device nobody but Apple can buy the component you might need.

    • @execation
      @execation Před 2 lety

      @Keltic D Okay, so you clearly don’t understand the term “right to repair” and instead have become a salesman for the people that charge £420 for a £5 repair. Everything you’ve said is wrong - if something I OWN is broken, I should have the RIGHT to REPAIR it myself - and that means NOT having to do what Vince did in this video, and other videos. It means something breaks, I fix it. Or, in your uncalculated infantile brain, I shouldn’t pay nearly £500 for a £3 fix. Imagine buying food for a week for £3 ($4.45) in one store or a weekly food shop in another for £500 (nearly $700)… what would you pick? No jog on you little troll. Enjoy paying for repairs, while I enjoy fixing them.

    • @HeTake123
      @HeTake123 Před 2 lety

      @Keltic D Do you think Apple would have sold Vince the capacitor if he asked? No.
      Do you think Vince got the schematic and boardview from Apple? No.

    • @HeTake123
      @HeTake123 Před 2 lety

      @Keltic D You literally said that Apple don’t try to stop people repairing their devices.
      Explain how they’re not stopping you to repair your device when they tell chip manufacturers to not sell anybody but Apple a certain kind of chip, or when Apple serializes parts so that you can’t replace them yourself without their software.
      And yes, people did use provided schematics to fix stuff back in the day, don’t be stupid and say otherwise.

  • @JoshuaG

      @Dr Weirdgloves If that's the case, and all their staff at the GENIUS BAR just replace things then it shouldn't be called a GENIUS bar. For a company that likes to push their eco freindlyness why cant they change parts. There seemed to be multiple testing points on the board to accomplish some simple testing to locate the faulty part. I have a love-hate relationship with Apple. I like their products but hate the way they rip of their customers. Perhaps when they sell their items they should point out the cost of fixing (sorry I mean swapping) if anything should go wrong. I dont know about this board but for a premium price shouldn't this item not have gone faulty.
      All companies have business models but Apple model seems to rip its customers off which isn't a great model.

Had Apple care plus and my phone was covered but they won't let local authorized repair shops keep parts on hand and it would've been 5 days to swap out a swollen battery that took me 15 min to fix. Have a z fold 3 now and selling my 12 pro max. Granted I know if I damage the screen on my new phone I may have to send it in for repair but a local authorized samsung repair shop here has samsung parts on hand so I have more faith in them to get things done quickly. For so long you've been hoping you could fix something with just a shorted capacitor. Your dreams came true with this one. A part costing pennies rendering it needing 400 pound plus to repair. Apple needs to improve its repairability to convince us it's being sustainable. They should do a repair like that for 30 quid or so. But I bet they'd simply install a brand new motherboard

      It’s simply a matter of economies. This was an easy and cheap fix once you know the source of the fault, but it could have been a more expensive part. The original fault could have caused others that will manifest later. Diagnosis could have been a lot harder than this one. It probably took Vince half a day to find and fix the fault. If Apple took half a day identifying your problem, that would be more expensive than replacing the whole board for a guaranteed fix when the diagnosis could have taken half a day and still came to the conclusion that the board would need replacing for a good fix.
      I know it sounds like they’re doing things wrong, but can you name any other manufacturer who does what Vince did here as their repair process or do they all just replace whole boards and modules?

    • @paultasker7788
      @paultasker7788 Před 2 lety +1

      @@sdjmchattie not really I will agree. Right to repair rules might change things though. Your right in it'll probably still be whole boards and not individual chips and also that something else could have caused that capacitor to fail so in the long term the fix isn't guaranteed. I guess they would end up with lots of 2nd or 3rd fixes and you're right it wouldn't be economical. The repair cost from Apple is still huge though. That's nearly half the price of the laptop

    • @sdjmchattie
      @sdjmchattie Před 2 lety

      @@paultasker7788 thanks for the reply. It’s good to hear more perspectives. In reality, bearing in mind the fix would have to be replace the whole board for it to be a realistic approach to Apple’s repairs, what do you think the repair cost should be? I would guess it’s got to be a part that costs them around £200 to make. Half an hour of someone’s time to do the swap and test. Perhaps another £60 in wages, insurance, premises, tools during that half hour. Add some profit because businesses aren’t businesses without it. Plus VAT. I would guess this is always going to be a £350ish repair and then Apple add on a bit more because it’s Apple.

    Hey Vince. 10:42 that port allows you to attach a special tool for data recovery in the event of a failed logic board/macbook won't power on. It was removed from newer macbook models. Watching from The Bahamas.

    Awesome stuff BFF, another great fix! For such a great cause too... While I'm happy you got this working, I'm not happy now because now you've had your easy cap only fix (remember mine?) so now I need to find something even easier on a macbook to fix 😂

    Your USB voltage tester is weird. Its labelled output when its clearly and input of the charger, likewise inout is labelled as the output for voltage into the laptop :)

    Great video👍👍👍👍, PPBUS_HS_CPU is connected to PPBUS_G3H through R5400 which is a current sense resistor for PPBUS_HS_CPU, Keep it up 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

    You know you love "voltage injection" re: CO$T: I'm guessing Apple just relies on R&R board replacements as apposed to having a "corporate soldering iron jockey" (no disrespect:) to do board level repairs. Not to mention issues with reliability and safety regarding the Apple brand.... But yes, that was magnificently serviced. You're hired!

    PPBUS_HS_CPU For some reason I've been seeing it it's common It's always to do with one of those Shorting out or Is cracked capacitor.. It even happened with my own touchbar macbook .. Watch out for flex gate Is common on those models too
    Glad to see you get it going 👍

    Great job troubleshooting the issue. 460 lbs is just outrageous. In the U.S Louis Rossman is fighting the right to repair. Consumers would end up throwing electronics in the dump. Thanks for the video. Love your channel

    Well done Vince . Provided that the person who sent it in does send it to the Ukrainian family i can assure you that they will appreciate it a huge amount . It will allow them to keep in touch with family and friends here in Ukraine and that is very important to them . Can you please ask the owner to include a sticker pack of Cyrillic letters for the keyboard and if you or he can to download the Russian and Ukrainian languages onto it and set those languages as the default . If it is set to Russian and they want it to be Ukrainian they will sort it out , they are smart people
