Sandwiched between Infinity Wars and Endgame, I was in too deep when Marvel said it was a must-see for the Infinity Saga. That was the last time I trusted Disney/Marvel. When phase 4 came along, every single movie/show just reinforces my disappointment in the brand.

The MCU as an ex is a very apt comparison! The only thing is Marvel is my first love, so while I have no interest in what I currently see, if they all of a sudden got their act together I’d be tempted to fall head over heels again, like an absolute fool.

Ms Marvel, it genuinely felt like it wasn't for me. Not in the She Hulk way where people told me that the show wasn't for me, whilst it insulted me, but in the way that it looked okay, but I am in no way the target demographic.
I wish the actress really well, she seems like a nice person and an okay actor.

The villain in The Marvels is actually named Dar-Benn. It’s another gender swap. In the comic the character is a man. They changed it to a woman for this movie. Why?? I’m not sure but it’s definitely a turnoff for me. I guess the 3 female Marvel characters wasn’t enough girl power for the MCU. Having another strong powerful female isn’t the problem, just not sure why they couldn’t find a strong female villain from the comics to be the antagonist for the film. If they’re trying to retain important elements of whatever story they’re trying to tell by keeping the character as Dar-Benn, they’re tuning it by swapping the gender. Often times in the Marvel comics, characters are connected, (e.g. Scarlett Witch is Magneto’s daughter and he has other children with other female mutants). If they all of a sudden decided to make Magneto a woman, that changes the ancestry for other characters, then the explanations become stupid. Like when the made Johnny Storm a black guy but kept Sue Storm white. They were forced to make up some idiotic explanation as to why these siblings were different races (adopted) and it unnecessarily changed their backstory and ancestry…all for the sake of pandering inclusion and diversity. Which for me, as a black man, is insulting. I couldn’t really get into Ms. Marvel but judging by the previews, this movie is going to take in an immature feel and tone judging by Ms. Marvel’s childish responses to a lot of what’s going on in the previews. I’m feeling it’s going to be a flip as well! The gender swapping, “girl power” doesn’t help in at all! I feel WW84 vibes.
Spider-Man in Civil War and Infinity War was a little immature but it wasn’t over the top and it didn’t change the serious tone of Civil War (or Infinity War). From the previews of the Marvels, it just seemed like there was too much immature, comic relief.

7:26 - "[Marvel] once had solo movies for big money makers like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America..."
Funny you mention it that way because before Marvel Studios was even a thing the new CEO of Marvel who replaced the disastrous and crooked Avi Arad came up with a plan to build their studio around the Supes that other studios didn't want. He etched out his plan in a magazine interview (2006ish) whereby the newly created Marvel Studios would showcase these lesser known Super Heroes (Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor were mentioned) in a way that allowed the studio to bring them together in cameos. When I read it I immediately thought "Avengers!" There was one big caveat. Everything hinged on the success of "Iron Man". The article was very clear that if the Iron Man movie wasn't a box office success the studio would fail because they wouldn't have the capital or clout for the other films.
So, when we think of Iron Man or Thor today we think "hugely popular super heroes" that's a very recent development for Hollywood.

Disney Magic is at its best when they make something new, especially with something everyone has forgotten. I figured it out, Disney's next hit will be a crossover with Prince of Persia (2010) and Live Action Alladin (2019). It won't matter that Saracens and Persians are from different time periods and speak different languages. Prince Dastan has the dagger of time and everyone spoke English with British accents (according to their movies)

Phases 1-3 made household names out of B, C, and even D list Marvel comics characters.
Now we're in Phase 5 and it feels like The MCU can't sell water to a fish.
All the work Marvel has done to try and make the Marvels a thing (in and out of the comics) and here we are on the eve of their team up movie, unable to muster up enough of a fuck to hate watch it.

Marvel (in contrast to DCU) is very fortunate they still have a pretty large hardcore herd that willf eed on absolutely anything, no matter how soulless the offerings. However even the Marvel herd is dwindling and most kids these days make fun of them. A very good sign because maybe, just maybe we will get our cinema back in a few years because it has been quite a desert for movie lovers since the 2010s.

It's not lost on me that the MCU lost any real direction it had after the death of Stan Lee. That, combined with Disney's insistence that they focus on stories from the "All New, All Different" era of Marvel Comics (in other words focus on stories from after they bought them so they didn't have to pay royalties), drove the MCU into a ditch. The shift from a purely movie based cinematic universe to a streaming based version didn't help either. Because it's one thing to have to watch another movie to get caught up for the upcoming film as opposed to have to watch 8-10 hours of a streaming show on a service I don't really want to pay for constantly to get caught up for a movie I only halfheartedly want to watch. In summation, the MCU we knew and loved died with Stan, and I don't think it's coming back.

Disney should have known that Kamala Kahn ( miss marvel) wouldn't draw fans, her comics never sold, which would tell anyone with an IQ over 3 that she's not a well liked character. But, they needed that diversity, and she checks a lot of boxes, young, female, and muslim, so they thrust her into the spotlight, and hoped for the best. When you decide your movies by what boxes they check instead of what characters are liked by fans, you're starting out with one foot already in the grave. I don't see Marvel making a comeback anytime soon, which is sad, because I used to get so excited when a new Iron Man or Captain America was coming out, they were fantastic, well loved characters, not to mention box office powerhouses, so what does Marvel do? Kill them off. Genius move. Can't let the superhero world have a patriarchy, can we? No way, let's sacrifice great storytelling with beloved characters and success at the box office and instead make a matriarchy with characters that no one likes or cares about and lose money for the shareholders. Sounds like a stroke of genius to me, or maybe I'm just having an actual stroke. Oh shit, I need to call 911.

We all know why Marvel can't produce a competent product anymore-- ideology, too many cooks in the kitchen, too many unqualified people, etc. This leads to rewrites, reshoots, and delays up the wazoo. What I don't understand is this: where does this $300 million+ go? The end product always looks so cheap. During filming, they must be serving caviar for lunch and taking a limo every time they need to go the port-a-potty.

  • @MasterSkywalker86
    @MasterSkywalker86 Před 10 měsíci

They made Captain Marvel more this perfect hero with no flaws. And it's flaws in characters that people relate to most. Why Disney thinks women have to be overpowered and perfect in movies makes no sense to me. Writers just are not good. What good is any character if they don't have weaknesses they have to overcome? What good is a character if they never have their own inner demons to fight against? Why do I love Batman? Cause he is kind of of messed up in the head. The dude has inner demons he has to go against at times. Why is Spiderman so relatable. How many times has Peter messed up or made a bad choice? Plenty but he always learned from it. That inspires people. Why can't Disney do this with female characters? It would only make them more relatable and display real strength. They had an opportunity with She-hulk and blew it. I'm out. I won't see this film.

This here is why Ive always shared universes will eventually fail and fall apart. Especially as people age out or wish to do other things. They used their biggest characters to sell it now that they are to afraid to recast those characters they are retiring then or doing what failed in the comics passing down the character mantle. Falcon Captain America, Jane FosternThor and Iron Heart for examples. Yeah this is what you are left with. Should of built up some of these smaller characters why the big guns were there because now the little guys can't support it

Ms. Marvel was the lowest watched show in the MCU, despite the RT score and the shills screaming that it was so incredible and everyone should watch it. Say what you will about the M-She-U moniker but more and more it does seem that is Disney's approach to their big IP. In Star Wars we got Mary Sue Rey and now Ahsoka and The Mandalorian being ousted from his own show by Bo Katan. We have the Obi Wan show being about little Leia and the new female Inquisitor. The Bad Batch was a great animated show until they pushed in Omega, the little girl who can do just about anything.
If we go to Marvel then the entire Phase 4-6 has been about pushing Agenda. The Eternals failed hard because it was more about diversity than about a good story. Thor Love and Thunder made Thor out to be a frat guy again like he was at the start of Thor, the first movie. His character arc has vanished and been reset so that Jane can come in and save the day as female Thor. Wakanda Forever ... yeah, well, we saw what they were going to do there a mile off. We have a female BP and a female Iron Man in Ironheart. Quantumania had not one, not two, but three main female leads showing the male lead how do things right. And then of course the The Marvels came out to crash and burn.
On D+ we got the Hawkeye series which was really the Kate Bishop show co-starring Hawkeye. Wandavision which again despite critical raves wasn't for everyone. Loki which was a bait and switch as it was all about female Loki, not the character we had grown to love. The afore mentioned Ms. Marvel of course which failed hard. She-Hulk was was a total dumpster fire and finally Echo which ... well, the less said about that the better.
And of course let us not forget Indiana Jones when it comes to Kathleen Kennedy's crusade to destroy every male character in the Lucasfilm library.

Mrs Marvel is one of my least favorite of D+ (after She-Hulk of course) but again... watchable. The main actress is fine. Its just plot wasn't particulary interesting to me, and yet im the kind of guy who enjoy "adventure movies for younger audiences".
And well... im probably gonna watch this new Marvels because i kinda watch all their movies in theatre (i missed one or 2 during Covid tough)... But im getting closer to you in the "its not events much anymore, im gonna start skipping some probably at some point". That said so far even movies like Quantumania wich i can't say i particulary loved crazy, they didn't insult me or anything like some peoples. If i recall i think you hated it, i recall you saying you walked out lol. But i could be wrong.
But overall lately i have this feeling of "its alright ... but nothing special" everytime i watch a Marvel movie in theatre. Thats not normal but what should be mega blockbusters.

    Great video Jay.
I haven't enjoyed a MCU movie since Endgame. And the only MCU TV show I liked was Falcon and Winter Soldier.
I absolutely hated Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Multiverse of Madness, No way home, Thor Love and Thunder, Wandavision Loki S1, and the first episode of She Hulk. I didn't even bother giving Quantumania or Eternals a shot or the other MCU shows since I've learned my valuable lesson. So I wholeheartedly agree with your stance that if you don't like what Disney is putting out, don't give them your money. Money talks and that's the only way to speak to Disney.
I really enjoyed Barbie though and watched that 3x in theaters. And I got tickets to Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert film this weekend. As for Captain Marvel 1? It...was a movie. Bottom tier MCU but better than The Dark World if that means anything to you 😂.

Candyman was a mess. Miss Marvel was a mess. Captain Marvel was trash. Monica Rambeau's "they'll never know what you gave up"❤ is on par with "somehow Palpatine returned". The MCU is in trouble because the core of the MCU movies where made by the Russo Brothers . Disney let them walk away, they had just delivered two of the biggest movies of all time. Without that strong core everything they put out was mid. They have to choose better projects, they also have to stop the TV shows. I want the Marvels 2 bomb hard. I want Echo to be the next Willow. Maybe then they'll focus on quality again

Here's the thing... Guardians was a fluke about B and C characters. Once that was successful, it opened the gate for all these other lousy b and c characters. They need to stop trying to make Guardians happen again and get back to their main Heros. The ones we actually care about.

    • @m.hadley9121
      @m.hadley9121 Před 10 měsíci

I wouldn't say GUARDIANS was a fluke. GUARDIANS worked because you had creators who were passionate about the source material in particular and the space pulp and superhero genres in general. THAT'S the problem, because, while you have a good point about getting back to the main heroes...look who has been in charge. CHLOE ZHAO on ETERNALS or JESSICA GAO on SHE-HULK? MS. MARVEL's creative staff, more interested in "seeing themselves on screen" as opposed to crafting a memorable superheroine story? Folks like ALI SELIM of SECRET INVASION?
We need creators like JAMES GUNN and THE RUSSO BROTHERS - folks who actually CARED about what they were working on to begin with, main heroes or B/C characters.

Capt Marvel is one of those movies you can skip and not miss anything. It brought nothing to the MCU and if Capt. Marvel's character was left out of Endgame it would not have affected the movie at all. she is a totally irrelevant character.

    Just like Marvel's writing!!!
But yeah, that's the problem with modern MCU; it's lazy writing especially when it comes to their female characters.
I'm down for all of the ladies being brought in, I just want the material to be good.

Here’s how u fix the mcu. The upcoming fantastic 4 movie we find out they are from a universe where there are x-men and avengers( I’ll be calling this the mcu2). At the end of secret wars all the heroes return to their respective universes(Holland spidey to mcu, tobey to raimi verse, fox x-men to fox verse, etc). But in the end we are now following the universe the fantastic 4 are from, the mcu2. While our old mcu is still out there in the multiverse. There’s ur soft reboot old mcu still exist and we are now following the new mcu2. As for Tom Spider-Man just complete his trilogy and introduce the new mcu2 Spider-Man in phase 3 or 4 of mcu2. That gives enough time to finish Tom Spider-Man arc before introducing a new actor to play spidey in the new universe. Now as for what do u do before secret wars cause no one cares ? Simple take all the politics and agendas out of EVERY PROJECT, turn shows that people don’t care for like echo and agatha into 40 minute specials, finally focus all ur attention on Spider-Man no way home, multiverse of madness, loki, fantastic 4, deadpool 3, kang dynasty, and secret wars as the main movies and 1 tv show u need to understand the multiverse saga. Here’s an outline of what I’m saying. Post secret wars mcu2 phase 1 wolverine film, hulk film, fantastic 4 sequel film, x-men film, elseworld film Holland Spider-Man 5. Phase 2 wolverine 2, hulk 2, x-men 2, fantastic 4 3, ultimate avengers 1, elseworld(old mcu) Spider-Man 6( Tom new trilogy done here). Phase 3 wolverine 3, hulk 3, fantastic 4 4, black panther 1, new film of Spider-Man of mcu2, avengers vs x-men.

I liked the Captain Marvel film. Watched it before i knew how horrible Brie is. Still like the film despite all that. Her and Sam Jackson have good chemistry. There was the proper amount of comedy mixed in with the serious nature of the film. The main skrull guy is funny. I think that film gets a bit of a bad rap, but having said that....i have complete faith that Disney will come through with an atrocious The Marvels film. Its just what they do these days. Consistently bad product after bad product.

You don't have to go to the Caribbean to watch it cost-effectively. I wouldn't mind a movie day out, following by a thoughtful talk in a coffee shop. I'll pay for both the ticket, popcorn and the coffee. I'm not in the US, though but I'm sure inflation doesn't bankrupt everyone in the US. We're quite fine in Asia. I'm sure the news is as overblown about us on your side as it is about you on our side.

I agree that the movies lately have sucked, but there is hope. If they can pull off a good X-Men movie the way they did Avengers, we could see a return to glory. Magneto done well would be a start. Avoid using any of the existing actors, just start over. Reset expectations. Lose the inclusivity and diversity baggage and just make the movie. X-Men are the poster children of both, so it would happen naturally. The other thing is, try and keep it true to the comics. Making Mystique the leader was confusing and frustrating. Giving emphasis to Wolverine was also annoying. Scott or Storm are the leaders I recall, as such the focus should be on them and let the others play supporting roles. Now, another thing. Some people are glorifying "Old Marvel". Hate to break it to ya, but they had crap movies as well. The first Iron Man started out really strong, but the last act was a bit anti-climactic. Iron Man 2 & 3 were not good at all. Thor also had its' share of crap movies: Ragnarök was arguably the best of the bunch. The first Dr Strange was pretty good, but not nearly as good as Avengers. Oh, yeah, and Avengers Age of Ultron was arguably a let-down to viewers due to subpar storytelling and Endgame, to me, was the beginning of the end due to the "girl power" narrative and the nerfing of two of the three strongest characters (Hulk and Thor). All the Antman movies sucked. I saw the first of the 3 Guardians of the Galaxy movies and didn't care for them. So, it's not like they were batting a 1000, it's just that, we expect SOME duds and are willing to let it slide. But, again, I agree with you with respect to the new lineup. I considered the story arc closed at Endgame with the death of Tony and Steves' retirement. Btw, I'm sure you've heard it a million times, but Aubrey Plaza bears a strong resemblance to you.

2:15 when i heard they weren't doing a Nova story (which would have made sense to do and could have led to Annihilation which would have been awesome) and instead were doing a Capt Marvel movie (and not Ms Marvel version) i nope'd out. decided id wait to hear from people i trusted if it was good and required to watch for Endgame. the answer for both was no. but what i found out after watching several in depth breakdowns of Capt. Marvel was that anyone who knee jerk defended Marvel (to this day) wouldnt give 2 fucks what i thought because i hadnt seen it for myself. even tho i could give them an exact breakdown of most scenes. so ive basically had to tap out of talking about it with anyone and am now seen as the grump who just hates women... fml.

Jay you are spoy on as usual. I remember walking into Avengers: Endgame telling my kids this was the last great Marvel movie we'd see for a long time. I wasn't wrong. It took 10 years to get there and it culminate in one great final movie! If Marvel following the same strategy they'd be on track for another set of massive wins in 2029. They stupidly thought they didn't need to follow the old strategy that worked and now their phase 5 is absolute garbage with the exception of GoTG which has ended. Very Sad. Fiege can take the overall win, but the King maker is no more.

One of the Marvel movies made some pretty good Box Office hits, especially Avengers: Endgame, but even tho Captain Marvel has 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences didn't even like it because of Brie Larson. And I think The Marvels are going to have the same reactions to Brie Larson's performance, and I think it's not gonna do well at the box office, when it released on November
