  • Does octane booster add power or only detonation protection? Let's find out!
    Did some 0 to 30 and top speed run with the Mega Moto 212 Tillotson 225 powered mini bike with 87 octane gas? Then added VP Maddative to the 87-octane gas to see if there would be any difference in performance.

    Loved the video!!! I heard that there is a new Duromax engine. You should test that thing out because it's supposed to be the best of both worlds between a 212 and 301.

    If you are experiencing pre ignition or detonation and you add an octane booster that prevents pre ignition or detonation you will experience a gain in power. Depending on the severity of the pre ignition or detonation it may be a significant amount of power gained by correcting the problem. One thing to remember is that you may have a condition causing a very minor amount of pre ignition that is not severe enough to hear or feel and therefore you dont notice it occuring. Then adding the octane booster gives you a slight increase in power. This leads to the impression many people have that Octane ratings affect HP directly when in reality they don't unless they are too low to meet your engines requirements to avoid pre ignition. Octane ratings are simply a rating of how much resistance to ignition a fuel has. The higher octane a fuel has the more it can tolerate high compression ratios (both mechanical and effective ratios), i too much ignition advance,inefficient combustion chambers, or excessive heat in a combustion chamber for example. But the octane ratio does not determine the amount of energy released from a fuel that is ignited with proper timing in a combustion chamber that is adequate for the compression ratio etc... For HP gains in an engine that is not experiencing pre ignition, ie everything is tuned properly and you just want more power through a change in fuel you must look at volatility and thermal energy ratings which determine how rapidly a fuel burns (and expands while it burns) and how much heat a given amount of the fuel will produce when it burns, often called caloric potential. From all my experience on engine dynamometers and at the drag strip there is no performance gain when increasing fuel octane ratings unless the engine was experiencing pre ignition, it will sometimes cause slightly higher fuel consumption though.

      Yes, this is why I figured I was seeing gains, The Tilley 225 has a thin head gasket that bumped compression by about a point. I figure the engine must have been on the verge of detonation with the 87 octane.

      We used to install knock sensors that were stand alone, had no connection to engine or fuel management systems but would light up an LED array that had 5 LED lights. As soon as they detected any pri ignition at all the first light would come on and as it became more severe the additional lights would turn on. Typically you coild not hear any "Pinging" or "Spark Knock" until the 3rd or 4rth LED came on, of course different engine designs or materials used to make them, or where the sensor was placed could affect the threshold at which pre ignition became audible. One indicator that you have pre ignition issues that you may not have heard will often be found on disassembly when you remove the rod bearings and look at the contact area between the rod and rod bearing (opposite of the wear surface) where you will see evidence of fretting or hammering on the top rod brg half that are not visible on the brg half from the rod cap side. Also if the top ring groove seems tighter than when you last checked it, particularly on the side of the piston that would be directly under the exhaust valve.

    Something to keep an eye out for with octane booster numbers is that when most claim raising 5-6 points, it's actually 5-6 10th's of a point. We tried several brands a year ago with very minimal results like you're getting. We settled on 93 octane pump gas for price and availability with our 10 to 1 compression motors. It will handle 32 - 34 degrees advance without pinging.

    • @OoheavysackoO
      @OoheavysackoO Před rokem +1

      This exactly. Way better off to just run e85 or dump a bunch of toluene in 93octane. e85 is 105 typically but have to adjust carb jet since it takes more fuel to get to same power. This is all pointless if you don't have high compression and way advanced timing. You can also index and side gap your plugs. lot of work for little gain, but if you build your whole ride with that mindset it adds up.

    Would like to see you forward the test by using various offset keys to advance ignition timing, even go up to 103 octane and 8 deg advance if such a key exists. Then play with head/chamber size decreases keeping valve float in check to avoid contact. Shave her off a few thou and see if it takes the added compression without det.

    If there was only a way to electronically control the timing in these engines. You could see a massive power increase with race fuels and advanced timing….or blow the block apart. Either way, fun.

    I ran across some classic car racing oil from Lucas at Walmart the other day and bought it for my lawnmower. Reason being is because it has the zinc additive in it. If I like it in my mower I'll be changing my karts over to it. Maybe review worthy as alternative to amsoil for our engines.

    Usually when they claim “8 octane numbers” in it would turn 87 to 87.8 octane, not 95.

    • @WMBGK519
      @WMBGK519 Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah thats for cheap stuff. This bumps it 80 points = to 8 numbers so yes it's 95

    • @AdamOpheim
      @AdamOpheim Před 7 měsíci

      @@WMBGK519 Is there proof of that somewhere? its pretty hard to believe. What is it? Looking at the MSDS its 86-93% petroleum distillates. Which do nothing for octane. Then 1-4% nitrilotriethanol which is an emulsifier. So you're dumping WD40 in your tank for the most part. I don't see how 1-2% of any other chemical could raise the octane level 8 points.
