Redfied Slide | Climbing Mount Redfield in the Adirondacks

- Climbing Redfield Slide in the Adirondack mountains. This was not for the faint of heart. It was an extremely long and slow going approach. About four hours of bushwhacking to get to the base of the slide. We started climbing Skylight Brook from the base of Allen and then branched off to Redfield Brook which we followed up to a pond. On the other side of the pond we had to bushwhack again to find the other side of the drainage and then follow that drainage up to the slide. The bushwhacking in there was intensely thick spruce and very slow going. It was super exciting because we found fresh moose tracks and fresh moose poop. It was not a bad bushwhack up to the pond as we were able to spend most of the time rock hopping in the drainage itself. Once we got to the pond this is where things started to get difficult. From the pond to the base of the slide was intense thick spruce and blow down everywhere and made the trek very slow. Surprisingly this is the kind of stuff that I love and found it extremely rewarding and fun. I’m all about a good challenge. Once at the base of the slide it starts out pretty mild with 5 to 15 foot ledges at a relative grade. The closer you get to the head wall the steeper things start to get. Where eventually you get to the final headwall and it’s probably a good 200 feet of climbing at a grade of about 70°. It is some of the most grippy rock I have ever been on. There are lots of little cracks for foot placements and handholds despite it being nearly vertical. I felt pretty secure but it’s not for the faint of heart. I’m very comfortable in my ability and my footwear‘s grip. At the top of the slab you’re climbing out about the same grade but in thick spruce. Following a GPS route to the Summit sign and you have successfully climbed Redfield the most epic way possible.
This day was pretty epic and this was only the first half. From the summit of Redfield we bushwhacked down hit a drainage and followed the drainage down to Cliff where we climbed Cliff Slide. The back of Redfield and Cliff Mountain has some of the thickest bushwhacking I have ever done in my life. From Allen to Redfield the bushwhacking felt open in comparison to Redfield to Cliff. Anyhow, two weeks from the date of this posting the second half of this hike will be posted. It will be titled cliff slide. You absolutely have to check out both to see the full scope of the adventure of this day. It was truly epic and I really truly hope you enjoy watching these vlogs. You are not going to find this kind of content anywhere on CZcams in the Adirondacks. Please make sure to leave a thumbs up and show your appreciation for how much time and effort goes into putting these together for you all. Love you guys, happy trails! ________________________________________

Tips for people just getting into hiking:
Don’t do this hike if you are a beginner! Seriously
LNT - leave no trace. Meaning if you carry it in then carry it out and if you do see trash on trail try to carry it out as well to help keep these mountains beautiful and clean.
Do The Rock Hop - The Alpine vegetation is very rare and very fragile so when you’re on the summit of these mountains please only walk on bare rocks to avoid killing the vegetation

Mount Redfield was my 8th High Peak that I did and it was the 1st of 4 High Peaks that I did on October 25th when I did a 21 hour hike
What a beautiful hike. Great job with the video, as usual.
Thanks man, I truly try to go above and beyond to bring some of the best content to CZcams! What did you think about that head wall climb? Wasnt that the gnarliest freaking shit you ever seen! I have never been on a slide close to that steep yet!
@@BrianHikesAllDay Yeah, absolutely wild. I did guitar slide up to w. bond last month and the top of that was pretty good, but not that intense. The bushwhacking from the top of guitar to the ridge was very similar to what you faced, bonkers. Straight up and thick as f**k. Yesterday did Arrow slide up hancock which was really cool, but almost all the slab is covered in slime, so you gotta stay in the loose scree. Bushwhack at the top was very easy. I gotta get out to ADK eventually.
Brian you are knocking it out of the park with the slide climbs awesome views👍
Thanks so much man. Lots of exciting content coming out for the next few months
Next level crazy bro 🤣
Just wait till you see the second half of this video.. the bushwhack from redfield to Cliff
Looks like a fun, challenging climb with amazing views!
Make sure to watch the second half of this video listed Cliff slide. We bushwhack from the summit of Redfield all the way to the summit of the cliff, and it was absolutely wild. This was to date one of the most epic hikes I have ever done.
@@BrianHikesAllDay Sounds interesting, I'll have a look at that soon!
Another amazing climb and video! What makes watching this one nice is that I met you and Tony on Cliff on your guys way down! Thanks again for the words of encouragement! Keep up the awesome videos and hopefully I run into you guys again someday!
Was such a pleasure. In two more weeks you’ll get to see the cliff slide half of this day and then you’ll know that you were met 30 minutes after the end of the second video lol
I love love love watching your slide climb videos, especially. All of them are fantastic though. When you solo climb in the full blown winter? Wow!!! Amazing, and you keep on going like it's a piece of cake🤗! This particular video is one of my favorites though... and what I was thinking when you two were in the middle of that meadow where "possibly no one had ever been..." my thoughts exactly! And the steepness of this first slide? O M G !
Yay!!!! I really love the one that follows this one Redfield Summit to Cliff Summit. The Vlog is titled Cliff slide. It’s a continuation of this one.
@@BrianHikesAllDay I will look at that one next...thank you!!
The first holy shit of a video is when things kick off!
This was such an epic day for us ….. part 2 needs to hurry hahahahaha
Definitely wins for the most epic day of the summer
I came for the climbing and stayed for the bushwhacking.
Hahahahaaha Did you enjoy the Bushwhacking footage? Lol
Always raising the bar! Rockin' it!
Especially in the gym.. a series of raising the bar. Then lowering the bar and then raising the bar on repeat 😂
Dude, that was intense footage!
Glad you liked it was one hell of an adventure getting to Redfield. Two weeks from now you get to see me bushwhack from the summit of the Redfield to the summit of cliff. Now that’s a crazy bushwhack lol
@@BrianHikesAllDay that bushwhack was just as crazy as the slide.
A fantastic adventure, great video. For bushwhacking I humbly suggest going up Calahan Brook then up the the south side/slope of Couchaschraga in the Santanoni range. You guys are awesome!
I have so many adventures planned it’s going to take years to see everything that I want to see lol I am truly loving the guidance from comments like this
Amazing video! I actually enjoyed the whacking and that pond spot more than the slide lol. Great work dude! 👏
You’re the first person to comment that and I really appreciate that because that some of my favorite parts lol
@@BrianHikesAllDay The best parts in the Park are the ones nobody either knows about or doesn’t dare venture into. I’ll randomly bushwhack/climb far into stupid places like this haha, your channel feeds my soul!
great job! I love your slide videos. I'm too old for extreme climbing so I will live vicariously through hikers like you. Keep on trekking. i did Giant's nubble on 10/2. I'm trying to get into shape for next summer when I make my push for the 46 (19 so far). these motivate me. Can the Big Slide slide be climbed freehand? Love to see it.
I have yet to do any research on any of the slides on big slide
Awesome video as always! Have you done/videoed the Macomb Slide?
Macomb slide is on there but that’s just under my normal 46er videos on the dix range. I have a summer and winter Dix range video. Going down it in the summer and also butt sliding down in the winter
You guys pick up a lot of ticks going through the woods like this?
High peaks regions are too cold in the winter and kills all the ticks off. I have never once got a tick in the last six years of bushwhacking.
Another great video my man! How often to do you have to deal with ticks? Especially while bushwhacking
I have never, and I repeat, not once ever have I seen a tick in the mountains
@@BrianHikesAllDay Nice, that’s what I like to hear!
Great video! Quick question, do you know the name of the mountain that looks like a pyramid and is directly in front of you while looking out from the slide. In the video it looked like the only mountain in the area. There was a view of it again as you looked out from the summit
I believe your looking at a mountain on the ADK highest hundred list called Cheney Cobble
@@BrianHikesAllDay thank you
That mountain in the mountains next to it is on the list eventually. Supposed to be one of the hardest bushwhacks to any of the hundred highest
Dressed like a coke boy out there lmao sick fuckin slide dude some really awesome angles you got this time looked gnarly gonna put this on my list for sure 🍻
That freaking slide is gnarly dude. Absolutely awesome. I actually climbed in tree line the entire thing on the headwall just to see that I would have enough hand and foot holds to climb up the center of the hardest part
And then of course climbed back down and tree line and then had Tony record me climb up
@@BrianHikesAllDay bro I saw shit looked like no joke got me hyped up sitting here..I just did Colvin for sunrise then Blake nippletop and dial shit kicked my ass definitely underestimated it lol I’m at 24 now half way babyyyy again this video was sick really good perspectives🍻
And remember if it looks steep in video you know exactly how steep it is in person
@@BrianHikesAllDay exactly the video never does it justice dude amen
Arent you not supposed to bushwack? I know they dont let you step on the plants at the peak because theyre endangered
There is no way to get to the slides without Bushwhacking. The fragile alpine vegetation grows on the bald summits. Bushwhacking through Spruce and the low level stuff there is nothing wrong with that. When you get to a bald summit you stay on the rocks to avoid stepping on the small fragile alpine vegetation.
