I always wanted fully open world Mario game kinda like in breath of the wild but instead with Mario with fun ways to run around the map and different locals and places to go from previous games
I would absolutely love it if they did a fully open world Mario game spanning multiple biomes, like Bowser's Fury meets Horizon Zero Dawn. Each area could then have their own giant boss such as King Bob-Omb and Boohemoth which require the Giga Cat Mario powerup to face off against and defeat.

An open world Mario game just doesn’t sit right with me. The best thing about Odyssey is that people spend years breaking its limits and with a limitless open world game it wouldn’t be the same. It’s been like this in odyssey and Mario 64 nd taking this away seems wrong. It would be cool though

If it was open world, there would be so much to explore. It could be a breath of the wild style game, but still colorful enough to match the Mario aesthetics.
Personally, I'm really hoping for a Super Mario Odyssey 2. It's not unheard of for Nintendo to take extremely long periods of time to produce sequels. Take Luigi's Mansion for example. First one released on the Gamecube back in 2001 and we never saw a sequel until 2013 when Dark Moon was released on the 3DS, and then the 3rd instalment on the switch back in 2019. So I'm definitely going to say that Super Mario Odyssey 2 is definitely a possibility.
I think while a Mario odyssey 2 would be cool I am more interested in seeing what an open world Mario game would be like, basically bower’s fury on steroids with more power ups and bosses.
Maybe use the boomerang suit like cappy (in terms of mobility) in odyssey.
Odyssey 2, open world, or something else. I'm OK with either one. Course now you're starting to get me hyped for an open world Mario. We could explore the whole mushroom kingdom.
Personally i think an oddessy 2 would be the logical path to take. People absolutely loved the first, and 6 years later there’s still such a demand for more just like it. Oddessy has so much potential. And maybe that’s why they made bowser’s fury, to test this open world meets mario meets multiplayer. Maybe oddessy two would be like this. And hopefully there’s multiplayer. And maybe, i know it’s a silly dream, but we could have p3 and p4 be wario and waluigi. We had something similar with the mario 64 ds port. Switch was the sequels console it seems like. So this seems like the path they want to make

If it's Odyssey 2, I hope they bring back Assist Mode. Not Odyssey 2 without Assist Mode otherwise it'll be frustrating like Galaxy 2.😠

I do believe there is a chance we will get Super Mario Odyssey 2, the guy who leaked it back in 2019 also leaked Sonic Frontiers and got the whole thing right, maybe they’ve put it off due to…well…2020. Also, need I mention why would Nintendo randomly email players about SMO in 2023 (without there being something more to it) and bring up that there’s probably still more to be explored along with other alludes. I do believe we may get an announcement of some kind soon.

This, the pandemic seems to have screwed a lot of things up. You'd normally expect some of these 2017 sequels to happen in 2020/2021, but the pandemic has caused a lot of delays.
100% agree. They wouldn't say that for nothing. Nintendo has to be planning something and soon. The movie comes out in April I suspect we should know by then. It would be smart for Nintendo to release the game at the same time as the movie to booth hype for both.
I suspect the assets they make for the movie will also be used in the game. The world's we see in the movie will be playable in the game.
I suspect it will be simotanious split screen two player, and will have online play in the massive expansive world and have missions need to complet with other players.

There actually is a leak that says they are currently working on a 2D one and that is the new mainline Mario game that will come out in end 2023/early 2024. I heard the leak says peach toad Mario and Luigi are playable, that it is not in the new super Mario bros format and that the graphics will make the characters in a style similar to the movie
Same here, I much prefer the mechanics and level design of the New Super games over the 3D games but I would like the creativity of the old 2D games like more new power ups and even returning ones like the Cape Feather

A change in art style/new name might be fine but that won't matter if it still has the generic environments and easy gameplay the NSMB games have. Add new themes, more story elements, more cool stuff that simply couldn't be done in the NSMB games
Hear me out.. what if Nintendo is working on a Sonic frontiers like game. That would probably explain why there has been no new mainline Mario game since odyssey. There was 5 years between forces and frontiers. Thinking about it odyssey and 3D world were technically the last big 3D based games from Nintendo so it kinda makes sense for them to go the frontiers/breath of the wild route to have a bigger open world route
I'm 110% confident that the next 3D Mario game will be a banger regardless of what it is; the series has been very consistent in terms of polish and quality.
That being said, I hope it's another sandbox-style game; the linear ones (3D Land, 3D World, and the Galaxy games to an extent) are still great IMO, but the sandbox ones resonate with me a lot more.
What would be cool is if they combined super mario oddesey and galaxy and they can call it Super Mario Galatic Oddesey

i just want “super mario: odyssey through the galaxies” or something. imagine the level design mechanics from galaxy; the gravity, planetoids, launch stars, etc. but integrated into the open-world style of kingdoms! instead of entering a kingdom, you’d enter a galaxy, with lots of planets, perhaps one large one with a bunch of smaller ones surrounding it, and you use launch stars to travel around, you could even travel on a revamped version of rosalina’s starship. i feel like this would bring both games to their fullest potential, while being a sequel to both- idk just makes sense to me lmfao

I loved the summer theme for a Mario game and the game was actually really good, too.
It had obvious flaws but that's exactly why I want it done right now.

Let's see, remember Super Princess Peach came out like 2006 like 16 years ago? That was her 1st game like Super Mario series. I think Super Princess Peach 2 is coming, just like Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Bros., everything! That's why these bring back for so many good memories to remembered.
I hope that 2023 is going to be one of nintendo's biggest years yet, and i am really hoping that the next big mario game will be announced this year. i have 3 predictions, a 2d game, a brand new 3d game, or a spinoff/sequel.

They do tend to only plan new styles of Mario games on next gen consoles, it seems like the unique concepts are designed around the new console's features. 64 took advantage of the console's ability to display 3D game worlds to create the sandbox style of Mario. Sunshine took advantage of the GC's water physics. Galaxy took advantage of the Wii Remote. 3D World used the Gamepad a bit. And Odyssey took advantage of the Switch's ability to render larger game worlds, added in co-op features, and dabbled a bit in HD Rumble. We're probably not going open world until we get a stronger Switch and they'll probably design the unique settings and gameplay mechanics around whatever else the next gen console can do.
I want a freakin 3D Mario Movie game
If there is Mario Odyssey 2, I'll be excited but I need to play Mario Odyssey. And if there is a new Mario game, I am down playing the game. Like, there has to be a new Mario game this year
People think that there is too much of a gap between Odyssey and Oydessey 2 but what is the difference with BOTW and TOTK. If Oydessey comes out this year or next it will be almost the same gap.

A new 3D Mario should explore a brand new world, we already did the globe itself and the whole galaxy, even a secret kingdom in a magical pipe. Maybe we should go dimensional
3D Allstars should've included an HD mario 64 and mario galaxy 2. Bowsers fury both story and gameplay brought alot of mario game styles together, it's a sequel to 3D world yet a sequel to sunshine etc. Combining bowsers fury of exploration/linear based levels with odyssey that's a free range open world that tributes the 2d mario. Story wise I have no clue but mechanics I think they're looking on perfecting the ultimate mario which bowsers fury and odyssey were close but they could use a touch of fluidity like the older 3d games and so on. I'd assume it'd be time to start bringing concepts together story wise but they get to do that and more by completely retelling marios story from the start. Which to me is refreshing as I'm used to seeing new mario this and new power up that and this time he has this ability, and I'd like to see it come together and feel like a consistent place rather than a different version of reality entirely for each game, (e.g. peaches castle exterior being changed in the games and movies shatters the immersion in my opinion but thats the way the cookie crumbles.

we are not getting odyssey 2; like its been said, 6 years is too long to make a game with ready assets, the only reason galaxy got a sequel is because the amount of stuff in the extension would be considered a game. i9 think we are getting an open world game as much as I hate it. some games just have to stay compact. like 64 style. but what I'm really looking for is innovation in the 2d series.

Yes, having a whole new Mario, that is completely openworld like Bowser's Fury, that would be awesome, hopefully it would be that.
I would really *LOVE* to see an open world-Mario-Game. But I really want it to be fully open world. Not like Bowser's Fury where you had to unlock specific areas. I think it would be awesome if it was like BotW or TotK, so that everything is accessible right from the beginning. But of course it would be way smaller than TotK or BotW, because the world of Mario needs to be big enough to give a feeling of openess, but small enough to still be filled well.
I would make the main-collectible make something like this:
You can go whereever you want in every possible order in this world, except of the final boss. Bowser is behind a great gate and the player needs to build some kind of weapon (a big hammer for example) in order to break the gate and enter the final boss.
Every main boss has a specific element which you need to build this weapon. So you have to defeat every main boss and beside this collect many of the main-collectibles (but not every) to enter the final boss and beat the game. Or you need just 4 of the 7 main bosses and the main-collectibles.
These are some of my ideas to this. And I think an open world-Mario-Game would be the ultimate videogame. 😊

I really feel like Nintendo is saving the next 3D Mario for the next console when it launches in 2024 or 2025. Releasing it now would mean a pretty long wait after the new console launches for a huge mainline Mario game. I think we could get a 2D Mario on Switch this year.

I totally agree with you on our next game being something like Bowser’s Fury but way bigger, it’s been quite a while for them to release odyssey 2 even though that would be amazing too. ITS BEEN (nearly) 7 YEARS SINCE WE GOT A NEW MAINLINE GAME 7 YEARS! When there’s a Nintendo direct there better be a new mario game with Chris Pratt and mario teaming up to beat Jurassic Bowser and his dinosaur kids the dinolings with emmet in the dlc lol
I have been waiting for odyssey 2 since the 1st game released, and I would be over the moon if they released a 2nd game
You know I hope we get a new Mario Game or a Sequel for Super Mario Odyssey cause that would be cool to see and also I noticed that you said that we have two for Kirby which is Kirby Star Allies and Kirby and the Forgotten Land but I know that we're also gonna get Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch which I cannot wait to play it and I hope that Nintendo does do TomoDachi Life on the Nintendo Switch with the new Mii Maker Editor cause that would be cool to see also.
And I just hope this year HAL Laboratory will do a Sequel for Kirby Right Back At Ya and keeping Tiff, Tuff, and Escargoon in it and adding new characters in it like Bandana Waddle Dee, Adeleine, Ribbon, Marx, Magolor, Taranza, Susie Haltmann, Elline, The Three Mage Sisters, Elfilin, Clawroline, and even more so I hope we get to see that from HAL Laboratory this year

Now personally I hope it's a larger expansive maybe open world Mario game , or something that'd be may e a mix of all the Mario styles like maybe the controls or odesey and maybe Cappy with the vibe of sunshine in the setting and platforms of galaxy. (The Collab thing is super unlikely and sounds like a hot mess when it gets put in the way I've made it.)
Well think about how galaxy 2 took 3 years, it could be because the switch can handle better models so they could be doing better models than what they did for galaxy 2
I'd say 60% Galaxy 3, 40% Odyssey 2, but things I don't want
1) shaking controls, just used mapped buttons, because for technical challenges really annoying you move your controller a certain way and the system reads your input incorrectly.
2) no pointing star bit collection, that's just annoying
3) No Cappy capture, don't really like Cappy catching things, fun to play other characters but would rather it be presented in different ways. Would be great to have options to use different characters for platforming and some would make it easier and some significantly difficult, so you get a bit variation for everyone
Things I do like
1) more complex move sets which can enable to you get to otherwise unreachable areas. Higher mountains and deeper seas and the further you go the greater the complexity.
2) they need normal, hard, and Contra be prepared to die hard
3) Need tougher enemies and more of them based on what level of difficulty you choose. Also allow to change the difficulty mid game for those having difficulty or wanting to up the difficulty. But also offer achievement who stay in contra mode the whole time.
4) longer and more difficult, perfect run last level, and have them be a series of levels for those who already beat all challenges in the game, sort of like the whole extra world that opens up in Super Mario World.
What if it is Mario Odyssey too but it’s also open world

I really just want a new 3D Mario game, People love super Mario Odyssey but it'd be nice to see and all-new one.

We can dream and hope for a fully open world like Botw, man, but I feel like they are saving that for when they come out with a more new and powerful system than the switch. I think it depends on when it's planned and especially, if it's on the Switch or next gen. Nintendo typically only moves on to brand new types of 3D Mario games for brand new consoles, it seems like they design the 3D Marios around the capabilities of the new console. So if it's still a Switch game it'll probably be Odyssey 2, but if it's a next gen game, they'll probably go for the big new open world game.

Ah, yes. The old "It's been SO LONG since the last Mario game!!!" trope while even _mentioning_ "Bowser's Fury" and forgetting that it came out in the same breath. Sure, not a full standalone game, but just forgetting about it while mentioning it seems very, very strange to me. Now here's my wacky idea: We'll get two Mario games. A new 2D style of Mario game finally not mentioning "New" in its title - plus "Super Mario Galaxy 3". (Kidding, but hoping for the 2D one.)
Come on Nintendo. Six years is the longest gap between mainline Mario games ever. Plus it’s the perfect time with the movie and whatnot.
I really suspect they have a secret Mario mainline game will release between 2023~24 and using the assets from the film to make the game. Here's hoping the game will be released at the same time of the film. 🤞🤞 Doubtful we'll be so lucky, but if Nintendo was smart that's what they'd do.

Odyssey was a good entry in the franchise.
However, I personally would prefer a more vanillastyle Mario like Supermario 64 or perhaps like Galaxy (Galaxy for me felt quite vanilla).
Odyssey and Sunshine evolved heavy around there gimmicky machanic.
If they do a Mario Odyssey 2, I hope they either add more collectibles or at least give more purpose to the moons. Like, when I played the first one I don’t think I was ever told that I needed x amount more moons to move on to the next kingdom - I always had more than enough moons to instantly move on, which in turn made the moons feel a bit worthless to me. To be honest, it quickly got to the point that I tended to be much more exited about finding purple coins than the moons.
It also became a bit awkward when I ended up playing those Moon Kingdom remixed harder challenge rooms first, before I found the easier “original” challenges in other kingdoms.

Did it always tell you the amount needed? Or did it only tell you the amount needed after you’ve defeated the boss of the kingdom when you’ve first visited the place? I could be wrong since it’s been awhile since I’ve last played, but I want to say that it’s the latter.
And if it’s the latter, then what I meant was that after the boss was defeated that counter would always be at zero as I had already collected the amount of moons needed to go to the next kingdom. And while I suppose I could just immediately move on to the next place…I’d of course would want to explore the current kingdom some more as things had changed (sometimes drastically like with New Donk City) now that the boss was defeated. Which meant stumbling across more moons and exacerbating the problem.

I did not, as (if I recall right) doing that when you’ve reached the needed amount of moons would automatically take you to the next kingdom. At least I think so…again, it’s been so long that I don’t quite remember if that’s actually the case or not.
I do distinctly remember seeing an obscene amount of moons come out, swirl around the Odyssey, and go into its fuel orb thingy whenever I did finally cash them in, so I definitely wasn’t cashing them in one at a time.
I will say I hope they add luigi and other mario characters that are the good guys like waluigi and Wario as a playable characters
Don't get me wrong i would love a massive world but i dont think completely open world would work for Mario i really enjoy the surprise of seeing the new worlds its most of my reason to continue the game i think Mario odyssey had it right it was one of my favourite games on the switch from the music to the boss battles! 🎉
