This group is very underrated these days. Bit in their heyday they were practically untouchable. My Dad was a massive fan as am I . This was a great era for music.
Ha. Not underrated in the least. Geez.
@@t0dd000 Oh look it's the "I have to argue with everything everyone says CZcams commenter guy!" lol. Hello, troll.
@@t0dd000 why should we listen to someone who has no taste? đ
Amen, brother. We were lucky. It amazes me how bad the music, or whatever is passed off as music, is today. But to each their own. I'm just glad I grew up at a time it was about as good as it's ever been.
Underrated?? They were a considerd a super group, number 1 by fans and commercially
Stephen Stills is one of the most underrated songwriters of all time, great song choice!
Underrated as a guitarist as well.
Stop using words you donât understand.
There is nothing underrated about Stephen. Heâs always been considered by critics, peers, audiences, and the industry as a whole as one of the greatest ever. Give your head a shake
@@Golfstar17 Iâm referring to the general public. Most people donât know who he is. Sadly the same applies to Paul Kossoff. Rolling Stone just came out with its list of the top 100 guitarists. Sadly, Stills came in at #47. When he should be in the top 10.
Good to hear it said, brother
@@Paul197A underrated bassist as well
Thank you Beth, CSN never gets the recognition in the modern era they deserve. The harmonies are crystal and
the dynamics cause the delivery to elevate overall. As a kid I would listen awash in their soaring vocals. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Nash sings the high part - his chest voice is (said to be) incredibly high so it sounds very even across his range. the way it blends with Crosby is unreal - they say it came very naturally to them (but i bet they did work on it a lot too). I saw them at glasto in 2009 - they sounded tremendous (playing this song and all the other hits). i particularly enjoyed Crosby's crowd chat, introducing the band: "Stills, he writes the rock songs (crowd cheer happily)...Nash, he writes the anthems (crowd cheer hesitantly)....me, I write the weird shit (plays Guinevere; crowd now delirious in the palm of his hand)"
Guinevere is such a GREAT song.
Ah, my favorite group of all time. I saw them in concert 3 times, once with Neil Young and the other 2 without him. Fabulous harmonies. Era gone by and getting lost nowadays. Did you hear Home Free's acapella version of this?
Thanks, Beth. Just noticing Still's awesome fingerpicking...he carries the whole song, providing the harmonic structure and rythym section...just one blinking guitar!
I used to put a big speaker on each side of my head and blast this song over and over and over, it's just a masterpiece. I love the way the three voices stack one at a time - Stills "we are one...", then Nash comes in on two alone then Crosby joins on three together, and all of them sing for each other. Thank you so much for reviewing it. Your comments are so interesting. Rest in peace David Crosby, love you all â€ïž
Why don`t you do yourself a favor and buy a good set of cans (headphones) ?
Well, that was 50 years ago but that's still a good idea
I also love the acapella version of this by Home Free
And the quarantined Italian youth choir singing Home Free's version. czcams.com/video/KtX1r0SzxlI/video.html
Joni Mitchell & Judy Collins stole their hearts altogether. Stills wrote Suite: Judy Blue Eyes to win back Collins, unsuccessfully, and Joni loved and dumped both Crosby & Nash.
So much love by this folk singers of ours souls. Thanks Joni, Joan, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Dylan, Simon and Garf., Judy ... So many good people â„ïž
One of my favorite songs, from one of my favorite albums, ever! I've always enjoyed the alliteration and other word play, along with the exquisite harmonies. Thanks for reacting to this live version.
This was one of my stepdad's favorite groups, maybe his all time favorite group. A Greatest Hits collection CD of theirs's was in his PC disc drive after he died in 2019. He saw them perform at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. I also saw them live with him in 2009 at the L.A. County Fair.
One of the great songs and performances of all time, in my opinion. Their harmonies breathe, especially in this song. I had never heard anything quite like it before I listened to their first album. I became a professional musician because of these guys, especially Stills. And after 47 yrs I'm still doing it. I've never done anything more than bars, restaurants and rock joints, but thats OK; to do it at all is a fantastic blessing. l can't thank them enough. RIP, David Crosby.
Thanks for covering this! I don't think they get the recognition they deserve today. I see a lot of reactions to covers of CSN songs but very few on CSN (or CSNY) directly. In the world of live, non-autotuned music, these guys totally rocked. Always glad to see when people today find them again.
One of the best harmonizing groups ever. I grew up listening to CYSN.
One thing that has struck me since the beginning is that in their harmonies Crosby disappears. You know he is in there. But his voice just blends so well.
The very best CSN is Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, but really, everything on the Deja Vu album is GOLD. If you add in Neil Young to make CSNY, try OHIO.
They make it look so simple and effortless but i guess that is the sign of the great ones in all ways of life!
All the alliteration is always alluring and amazing. Line after line leads me to listen to a lingering love song. That calls me back to memories of many lovers lost long ago. Thx for sharing
Now that's some title of the song! Thanks for the reaction and recommendation, Beth. Gotta give this one a good listen if I ever get the chance.
Great to hear the original, you should check out Home Free's version, stunning.đ
great suggestion
I was going to say the same thing, after searching her videos and not finding it already done.
And the quarantined Italian youth choir singing Home Free's version. czcams.com/video/KtX1r0SzxlI/video.html
My favorite group four way street have to be in the top 10 of albums ever made live at the Fillmore East
They were great with their harmonies. I got to see them twice in 1975. Once and Madison Square Garden in NYC just before Thanksgiving. Little did I know that during my dinner break I was sitting next to Graham Nash. I happened to be working the show. Later on her asked me what I was doing 2 days later and invited me +1 to see them in Philadelphia at the Spectrum Arena. It was so amazing hearing the audience at both show sining Our Hour and Teach Your Children. They were louder than the band. I also got to see David Crosby solo when he was taping a segment for Don Kirshner's Rock Concert TV show back in the 70's.
Lets not forget about Simona and Garfunkel when it came to hamony.
As much of a caricature as heâs made out to be, itâs David Crosby who is responsible for their most memorable vocal arrangements. Pure genius.
i am not a singer, but if i'm not mistaken it's more apparent on the studio recording that in that section, "They are one person" starts with just Stephen Stills singing, then "They are two alone" has Graham Nash join him, then "They are three together" has David Crosby join, and finally "They are for/four each other" has them all together for one more line. the way it builds is just gorgeous, and only they could pull it off in my opinion. gives me chills every time.
Home Free did an a cappella cover of this that is phenomenal. They do the same thing with one person, then two, then three, then all five building that way.
Doesn't get much better then that!! The harmony from CSN gets me every time. Always puts a đ on my face!
And the most amazing thing is that if you listen to him singing when he was young, it sounds the same. A voice like fine wine.
I'd like to see your reaction to David Gilmour singing Dimming of the day.

Your description of this was wonderfully adorable. One of my favorite songs in the world. Yeah, I'm old
Hey Beth, you Irish beauty of a person. My family were Dublin Vikings, so the tale is told by my grandparents, so maybe they are full of blarney. You are my favorite singer, reactor person on You Tube, as you are fun, and insightful . I do enjoy your breakdowns. Cheers!
Everybody had this album. For good reason,it was that damned good. Early summer of 1972, I had just graduated from high school. Were having one of those "It's never going to be the same again come September " parties. Some one produced an acoustic guitar, and we all sang a bluesy rendition of "suite Judy Blue eyes" and eventually, much of rest of the album. Fun and sad at the same time. (By the way, Neal Young was also in Buffalo Springfield, with Steven Stills)-trivia fans!
CSN and Home Free do this really well. Also check out Girl Named Tom, they did this as their audition for the Voice.
This version of the song is one of my favorites. Your break down of this song is accurate in melody, lyrics and appreciation. A beautiful song.
Massive fan of Crosby, Stills, and Nash and love this song. Their music genius put these lyrics and the music into existence. Homefree elevated this masterpiece with their amazing harmonies... please give it a listen.
Always loved and still love the CSN harmonies.
CSN (and sometimes Y) have some of the best harmonies out there... they are freaking effortless. Watching the Beatles doc recently, it is stunning how they can harmonize so perfectly, they were just locked into each other similarly to CSN.
There's a really cool live version of the song You Don't Have to Cry. I think it's from 1970 and it's beautiful.
No pyrotechnics ... no obscenities ... no gyrating dancers ... no synthesizersâŠno skimpy outfits...
Just very talented musicians / singers in front of a microphone with their great harmony.
If you really have musical talent, that's all you need ...Really miss those CSN & sometimes Y days.
The alliteration in this song is beautiful.
Some of the best lyrics ever
Stephen Stills seldom gets enough credit for what an amazing songwriter and guitarist he is. CSN is known for vocal harmonies and Stills specific skills get lost in the mix, sometimes.
Glad you're digging this, Beth. I've been doing this tune for 30+ years, and it never gets old.
Awesome! Thank you, Beth! What a great band, CSN (and sometimes Y)
That's the way I always put it too đ
CS&N are remarkable. They were my very first concert in 1970. Unforgettable. Thanks, Beth.
Have you watched Home Free cover of this.. if not ..i think you should
You should give a listen to Home Free's cover, it is excellent as a fan of this one from its release!
Please. Enough already! Stop your aggressive selling.
@@jlbaker2000 I think that, rather than one person "aggressively selling", what has happened is that a lot of people have independently suggested this. I remember this song so well from years back. Then when I encountered Home Free covering it, honouring it, I was completely stunned.
Best three part harmony ever đđ
I'm glad you discovered these guys. It was great to have been there when it all happened.
The studio version is fantastic on vinyl with a quality hi-fi system đ
Listening to Crosby's solo work, especially his first album, makes it pretty clear who handles the lion's share of the vocal arrangements. It was the same with the Byrds.
Croz is freakin' amazing! I saw him live about 4 years ago, he still had that incredible voice!
Such a great band and accomplished singers. Iconic!
Stills wrote this, and sings lead on the single mic, while playing his acoustic guitar. Crosby and Nash admirably provide backup singing and harmonies.
CSN and sometimes Y had the greatest harmonies in rock. Their box set is fantastic, top shelf stuff.
I would love to hear you review a crosby/nash song 'Guinnevere,'. There are a couple of live versions on CZcams that really capture the beautiful melody and gorgeous harmonies of the song. RIP David Crosby
A group whose combined talents produce music directly from Heaven! Three majestic talents!
Growing up in the 60âs and 70âs, I listened to these guys a lot. There are many, but one of their songs always sticks with me. âWasted On The Wayâ is fantastic! Give it a try đđ
There is a background story here. Graham Nash was introduced to Cosby and Stills by Jerry Garcia, in the kitchen of the house where the Mamas and the Papas lived. (Stills was dating Joni Mitchel and Nash was dating Carly Simon.) They sang some songs in the living room and knew they had something. Can you imagine singing harmony with Carly Simon, Joni Mitchel and the Momas and the Papas? Nash went back and quit the Hollies, Stills left Buffalo Springfield, and Cosby quit the Byrds to form this group. Believe it or not, the group has not been on speaking terms in 20 years. You should also critique Teach Your Children, it is one of my favorites.
This song made my teenage heartache easier to bear - in the year 1992 !!! Nirvana couldn't do that... no one but CS&N... Thanks, Beth!
Best vocalist and vocal arrangers of all time. Anyone who can track who is singing what part in (the Woodstock version of) "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" please "Show Me".
This song, written by Stephen Stills, is a classic with beautiful harmonies and lyrics. It came out in 1969 just as I was being discharged from the U.S. Army. It was one of the first vinyl albums that I bought when returning to the U.S. I literally wore out the grooves of this album.
I also always really loved the "they are one person, they are too/two alone..." bit
Stills is the one singing "they are one person" a solo line. Nash joins him for the "too/two alone" making it two people singing. Crosby joins for "free/three" and now there are three.
If only Young was in this performance and he added to the "for/four", making him the fourth voice! That would've been incredible.
Still, I always thought it was cool how they did that :)
OMG thank you for getting this song. It's a gold mine for reaction videos.
As this is your most recent post, I figured would be a good place to place a request. One of my all-time favorite singers passed away on 1/20/2022. Meat Loaf has had a long successful career. I have committed to memory his first album, "Bat Out of Hell." This album contains 2 excellent choices to play in his memory, "Bat out of Hell," or "Heaven can wait."
A point which is largely forgotten these days is its subject. Stephen was in a relationship with Judy Collins ( _vide_ "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes") and at this time the relationship was very rocky; indeed it ended soon after. Stephen's lyric is an angsty lament that he can't figure out how to help her stop hurting because he's still in love with her--possibly because he didn't recognize he was the root cause of her hurting.
Stills and Young wrote great songs in Buffalo Springfield! For What its Worth, Bluebird and Mr. Soul
If your going to listen to anything theyâve done,
Suite: âJudy Blue Eyesâ is a must !
CSN's "Cathedral" is the best they've got bar none.
I am getting to be an old guy, so I have a hard time saying that a newer version of a song is better than the original. I first heard this song by CSN back in the 70's off of the album. But the newer version by Home Free is even better. The harmonies are even tighter and the song takes a bit more of a dramatic turn. Check it out.
I disagree. The cover is great, but the original means so much more. I much prefer the studio version to this, but this was their first song basically. But also, the lyrics/alliterations are so much of this song-- it means so much more coming from the source than a cover. Again, not hating on home free at all, but the studio version is perfect and from the source-- can't beat it
But they did this live on old analog technology........awesomely good
Enjoyed it. Observations spot on.
Beth Roars you are wonderful! great video! keep doing what your doing!
CSN and Y put out incredible music and were untouchable for years. Like the newer version, but these guys wrote, sang, played, and performed the original.
I donât usually post on these things, but if I hear one more person, say these guys are underrated, Iâm going to pull my hair out . Iâm a lifelong musician and trust me. All real musicians revere these guys. Stephen Stills is practically the
originator of âAmericana music you all need to do your homework. American Idol and the other talent show clones have turned your brains to mush. And their best friend was Joni Mitchell probably the greatest songwriter ever . You might have heard of here too ? Jeez
Old boomer here. I liked CSNY back then. Listened too so much music--Rock, Country, Folk, and Pop. I was never influenced by the Anti-war, Anti-American, or any politics then. I just dug the music. Merle Haggard's "Fighting Side of Me" was probably the only political influence from music. I joined the army at 17.
hellow !! i am brazilian and i love this channel , this guys given the singing lesson !!! unfortunately one die !!!
Stephen Stills: "I'll not only sing lead, I'll play this intricate guitar part simultaneously." I was lucky enough to see them in 1977 (or whenever the CSN album tour was). It was like being on another plane of existence.
Home Free has done a completely a cappella cover of this classic song that is quite stunning.
Happy New Year Beth, you put your touchy feelings into expressive words, love your accent. Brilliant song, well done.
RIP David. We love you!!! đ
Best harmonizers ever if you disagree your argument is invalid
I woke up with the sad news Meat Loaf passed away today. I searched your library and I was surprised you haven't reacted to his singing yet... o_O
Meat Loaf has been a huge influence to artists like Jack Black and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D.
You really need to hear Home Free's arrangement of this. "Helplessly Hoping" has been a favourite of mine for 51 years, and I've never been so moved by a cover. I'd bet if you asked Crosby Stills and Nash what they would say this is even better than the original. Please, Please, Please do a reaction video for this here Home Fry.
I heard it once described that Nash sang the high harmonies, Stills the low harmonies and Crosby sang everything else. My fave CSN song has to be Southern Cross
Stills also received a Grammy for song writing in his solo and group compilation.
Love your videos. If I may request something. A reaction to Linda Ronstadt's blue bayou or any of her Mexican music.
On another continent, at the same time as Crosby, Stills and Nash....another group, with even better vocals, in my opinion was setting the stage, with profoundly less succes as CSN&Y - but....their importance as individuals and as members of The Shadows, they managed to reach star status anyways.
Marvin, Welch and Farrar.
Listen to this vocal performance: czcams.com/video/ezrV9cr63eM/video.html
I was hooked after this one. John Farrar who makes the arrangements are a true master, and his voice is like no others.
This group had way too little attention in my humble opinion. They make really clever arrangements, and their blend is unmatched.
I saw NO reactor take this group up till now. I hope someone will do it soon. They are truly amazing.
This song is an utter masterpiece.
There are sooo many covers of this song on CZcams, and I really like all of them I've heard. The same is true of "if I Fell" by the Beatles, which is 2-part harmony.
I grew up singing along to CSN tunes, and it wasn't until recently that I realized I hadn't been singing the melody. I had been singing the tenor harmony along with Graham Nash!
Don't forget Stephen's sublime guitar accompaniment.
You are spot on on their backgrounds. Neil Young was also in Buffalo Springfield. This group has such massively strong vocal roots! You should react to Home Free's cover of this too!
hi Beth, its been awhile since I been on your channel Glad to be back. If I was asked what my top 3 bands are, it would be The Beatle, Rush and CSN&Y. Regarding CSN&Y, specifically about Neil Young and my reason I'm commenting here. Talking about harmonies! As a suggestion, may suggest doing a reaction to Neil's song "Hanging on a Limb" He has a legendary female vocalist singing with him. Guess who? None other that Linda Ronstatd! And to me, the way I hear the song, its not that she's singing backup it more like a duet. And talking about the harmonies between the 2. Its a beautiful song and only one other person has done a reaction to it, and for me kinda sad, because its A BEAUTIFUL SONG AND THEIR VOICES ... My Goodness! On youtube there's several versions, but the one with Linda is from his Freedom album. Oh, as a side note. The first time I heard the song, I was thinking who's the female singer? I was so surprise it was Linda because I never heard Linda sing like this. And I'm a huge fan of hers... quiet a surprising discovery for me. Cheers
A big shout out to the use of alliteration in every verse as well.

I miss their genre, their tight vocals and melodies. Must be a thing from my generation of music.
Listen to home free it will blow you away
Got to see CSN and Y years ago, absolutely incredible to hear this song live.
Stephen stills,Graham Nash, David Cosby.
Check out the version that home free does ;)
Stills wrote the best songs on the first CSN album and is a hugely under rated bass player. Mostly correctly rated as a singer and guitarist.
Dallas isn't a slouch either on Deja Vu.
Wasted On The Way and Teach Your Children are two of their songs I would recommend for their sweet harmony! Love your reactionsđ
There's a reason CSN (sometimes Y) is one of the all time greats. Great singers, unmistakable distinctive harmonies that no one else has duplicated. Then you add in the songwriting... I'm especially fond of Graham Nash's "Slice of Life" songs like Our House and Just a Song Before I Go... etc. Stills' songs come a close second.
It is close to 3 years now when you reacted to the live concert version of Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust. In light of this could you react to Poets of the Fall - Sleep (Live w/ Lyrics)
Try Foxes and Fossils cover of this song if you love harmonies.
They have an 80+ catalog of wonderful music.
You might listen to the Foxes and Fossils cover of this. Fantastic!
First!!! Love this song!!!
I was watching the movie annihilation and when the acoustic of this song started I couldnât believe it I was like what is this doing in this movie. But then I came to realize the song was a character in the movie
