Fascinating how she compares him to Joni Mitchell! Neil and Joni are like doppelgangers. Born two years apart in Canada, they both suffered from polio as children. They both learned the ukulele as their first instrument. They both moved around quite often as children. They both struggled in school and dropped out, although Joni did eventually return to graduate. They've both had long, distinguished careers. They both are considered among the most influential artists of the last half of the 20th Century. They both experimented with many genres of music, and confounded both fans and critics with their musical directions. They both turned physical limitations to their own advantage in their styles: Joni's hand suffered from polio and affected the way she tuned her guitar, Neil's voice was always noted as nasally, yet he made that his trademark (although on "Without Rings" from his Silver and Gold, there is no trace of the nasal sound whatever - check it out!). They both are very outspoken and deeply philosophical about many issues. They are both private and relatively reclusive in their lifestyles. Thank God I grew up with these two incredible talents in my life!

Neil is his music, his music is Neil. He writes about his life experiences, unique to him but when he puts his thoughts to music, those experiences become universal. And, Joanie Mitchell and him are friends and hung out together with other musicians and songwriters of that time, early '60's etc. It all makes sense, right? If you watch this video completely, he is a true one man show! To be able to sing, play harmonica, piano and guitar while you do the vocals requires great skill. He's a natural! Loved him from the very first time hearing him way back in the 60's!đŸ€— And, he never quits! đŸ™‹đŸšđŸ‘đŸŒ

Neil's singing style reminds me of Gordon Lightfoot. Both are from Canada and very good at their craft! Very smooth and a lot of vocal style and warmth! And each of them could pick the guitar really well..... ENJOY!!!!! You mentioned Joni. She too is from the north of us in Canada. Another wonderful artist!!!!! Beth, Neil was grunge, before there was grunge! He is an amazing and gifted artist........... A gift from heaven above!!!! Take care.

You’re missing the point, I think. It’s not about if he is himself an American or a Canadian. It’s about his pronunciation, his accent, specifically on the words “man” and, earlier, “been.” There are a few subtle, general differences between US and Canadian vowels, similar to other regional variations in North America (for instance, they pronounce “out” as “oot” in much of Canada and also in Tidewater Virginia), but much less than the differences of either from British speech, which is what Beth is comparing to. Neil Young’s “national origin,” though obviously related to his accent, is simply irrelevant to the point Beth is making in the video; it’s accurate for a Brit to call his accent on these words in this clip “American.”
Did it ever strike you that Alex Trebek, Michael J. Fox, Martin Short, Donald Sutherland, William Shatner, or Lorne Greene didn’t really sound like Americans, because their (Canadian) accents were off? No? Same point.
(Some Canadians do in fact pronounce “been” with a long “e,” like the Brits (I think Peter Jennings used to say that), but Neil sings (phonetically), “I’ve [bin] first and last,” like most North Americans.)

Listen to 'The Needle and the Damage Done' - heroin, like with Kurt, Chris (Cornell) and Layne and many other in the Seattle 'Grunge' scene, Neil knew all about it. There's a thru-thread there certainly - especially with the Unplugged concerts you can really feel it.
