Ice cream cake is a very special era. It's the start of OT5, they got their first win and they also became much more recognized! Irene mentioned that she feels like this is truly her "debut" since it was the first song with Yeri.
Russian Roulette mv is super cute and colorful until you realize that they’re trying to kill each other!! It’s totally Red Velvet’s style.
Almost all of Red Velvet’s ''Red'' music videos, including Dumb Dumb, Umpah Umpah, Power Up, Rookie, Russian Roulette, Cookie Jar. It seems as though the girls were trying to distract viewers with bright colours and aesthetics from the actual symbolism of the music video. It’s creepy once you realise the actual meaning.
they used to balance out the red and then velvet concepts in their earlier years but because their red concept was more favored in korea they started releasing more red than velvet. velvet concepts were more popular amongst international fans

Actually, all of their music videos (yes, including their Red concept MVs) have dark theories. That's why their storyline is one of the most intriguing, in my opinion.
And yes, before Yeri was added into the group, Joy was the lead rapper.

THIS^^ some of the MV's may seem like they don't have a storyline, but I feel like the MV's are the live-action visualization of the story from their teasers and album at the time....if that makes sense lol. Basically, Red Velvet's storyline mainly lies within their discography rather than their MV's. Of course, there are MV's with obvious storylines true to its own concept....for example: Russian Roulette where girls are willing to kill each other to win the game of love, Rookie and being drugged into a dream, Peekaboo and the pizza boy killer cult, Dumb Dumb where the doll factory is thrown into disarray, Red Flavor and coming to terms with becoming an adult, Power Up and escaping from a melting world to a cool and fun world, Umpah Umpah and the drowning (Umpah Umpah to Umpah-pah)...However, what all of their MV's have in common is that they are often stoic and almost lifeless at times looking at us as if they need direction for what to do next....just like dolls...which leads me to my next rant below.
For those who aren't aware, the lore of Red Velvet that was just discovered through the teasers for the upcoming comeback (Feel My Rhythm) is that they are play dolls for a girl named "Reve". Each comeback of theirs has been a different stage or moment in Reve's life where she has imagined the girls in different concepts/scenarios as she plays with them. There are rumors that Irene is ReVe and she knows it, but the other girls are unaware but a few have started to realize that they aren't living true lives. Seulgi and Joy are the primary ones who have become aware that they are in a fantasy world each time...one may be evil and one may be good. Yeri is said to be innocent and unaware whereas Wendy is somewhat aware but doesn't do much about it. The white cat with heterochromia is what ties the real and fantasy worlds together because it is technically Reve's cat but it can access this fantasy world. Each comeback, there are easter eggs in their MV's and teaser cycle before the comeback which further the story of Red Velvet and Reve. They can be found through interactions between certain members, callbacks to previous concepts, and ESPECIALLY their concerts. I highly suggest fans who want to get into Red Velvet to watch their comebacks in chronological order while looking through their teasers for that era. It's a lot, and honestly still very confusing as a Luvie since 2014....but omg it's so dope
actually it's been a theory that they are all dolls being made by an 8 year old girl in her mind. that's why they have different concepts, because of the different scenarios that the little kid has in her head
and the way you described them as dolls fits perfectly haha you'll actually notice it in their videos too. them being cloned in dumb dumb, their emotionless faces in russian roulette, them being puppets in power up and rookie...
Also their MV always in the house or indoor MV, they are being small or giant.

I also remembered hearing dumb dumb for the first time during its release on 2015. I was also confused and intrigued at the same time. It was hard to decide whether I liked it or not. When they performed on live shows, I automatically loved it and can’t stop listening to it. Truly, Red Velvet’s music were ahead of its time.

Red Velvet’s concept of being “cute” isn’t cute at all. They tend to release a fun and cutesy sounding song but the MV exudes dark feeling. Love the Russian Roulette!!!

there are a new theory that redvelvet is actually dolls that is controlled by a girl named reve (the name of rv's robbot which means dream, it is also quite meaningful because in their recent teasers there is a girl putting on a box/robbot head on her head which significally means entering her fairytale land) in short rv"s entire universe is actually composed up of stories made up within a little girls imagination feauturing her 5 pretty dolls. (which is quite concerning bc of all the killing in their mv lol)

So, Dumb Dumb is one of my favorite Red Velvet songs, so I'm sooo glad you were able to like and appreciate it in spite of the horns (I'm a trombone player, so I ALWAYS love horns in songs so total opposite reaction generally haha - but that song is such a jam, it's infectious). It was so fun watching your reaction to that song and processing the unusual feeling you got from it that ended up in a like mode haha :D I do agree with Seulgi just having such a charismatic appeal! You should check out the videos from Irene and Seulgi's project - Monster and (MY FAVORITE) Naughty, if you haven't already. The charisma is OFF THE CHARTS. But that said - for me it was so funny because the first Red Velvet songs I listened to where Russian Roulette, Power Up, and Red Flavor - I had no idea that the Velvet side was out there waiting for me to discover! hahaha Even with the creepy elements of Russian Roulette, I had no idea they existed at first because I only heard it and hadn't watched the video or seen lyrics. So I didn't think I liked them that much.... but those songs are so catchy I listened to them so much I ended up going deeper and then my true love for Red Velvet EXPLODED - I'm much more a Velvet or blended concept fan than I am of pure Red side, although I enjoy those songs as well they just aren't the top of my list.

Actually I think Red velvet has RED songs, VELVET songs, and SUMMER songs. They became summer queens in Korea with the huge success of Red Flavor, and Power Up and Umpah Umpah are follow ups as summer tracks. Rookie imo is the most RED song. Power up you wont understand without red flavor. But honestly you do sound like your taste is a bit too basic for RV lol

im not confident in what i'm about to say, but i believe it was kind of a trend back in the early 2010's that kpop groups had all blonde members (BAP, myB, GPBasic, etc.); also SES got banned once for being the very first group ever to dye their hair blonde, maybe that's why the trend took place...?

For more red concept, u should listen "Red Flavour. It is the anthem for summer song. It's one of their biggest hit. Everyone knows the song. One more, you can try listen to "Umpah umpah". It has the high school musical song vibe.
Their japanese songs also mostly at the red concept. Like "cookie jar" and "sappy"
And yes, their mvs eventhough it is bright and cheerful they still have that creepy, querky elements. It's red velvet's things 🤣

It's always like that whoever get to discover about red velvet for the first time they would think that the red concept is the "cute" side of them but its actually not! Yeah it's bright but its not on the cute side, and also the interesting thing about their red songs is that there's gonna be always a creepy weird stuff going on, in the mv or also in the lyrics, u would think ahh it's just normal lyrics but when you going deeper through it you'll find that it's actually not! I remember reading a theory on umpah umpah lyrics and it was a shock when i thought it's just a lovely song😭

I didn't like power up on the first listen but later on it grew on me and is one of my favs by them. Rookie is my fav song by red velvet even tho it was the song i always skipped. Russian roulette is probably one of the best songs ever!

Actually the comeback is a Korean mini album and a Japanese full album
To understand Red Velvet’s concept and videos, you have to take some notes:
They have the red and velvet concept, but both have that “quirky” and spooky twist. Like you see in Russian Roullet and Ice Cream Cake, for example. And some of them mix the two concepts aswell, like Really Bad Boy that have a dark concept/mature vibe, but the song itself seems more upbeat and playfull.
Velvet is more r&b, chill, like Bad Boy, Automatic, Be Natural and Psycho. And have a ballad side too like One of These Nights.
Red is more upbeat and playfull like Happiness, Dumb Dumb, Ice Cream Cake, Russian Roullet, Rookie, Queendom and Zimzalabim.
The “mix” of both red and velvet can be seen in Peek A Boo, Really Bad Boy, even Russian Roullete (by the time they release that track, Joy says that RR is the first track that mix the two concepts).
But they have the “summer” vibe too, like Power Up, Red Flavor and Umpah Umpah. Those songs are more red side, but they have they own mood. They more happy and don’t have that quirky sound like they other red titles.

Yeah, RedVelvet is like that. Give us mixfeelings. For example, when I listen to Blackpink and Twice song, I already can expect their genre, and their song are easy listening, I can like it immediately. But for RedVelvet, it is hard for me to like the song in the first listening. I should listen to it 3 times in minimum to like the song. Because the genre is so unique, the concept too. Simply, I call it as 'weird'.

Power up seems like a bright song :))) but it’s not :))) The song reflected a real dark side in 90s America. When the summer break comes, parents send their children to summer camp. The children will have a lot of activites there. But all the parents were surprised when their children come home and being addicted to addictive substance. The lyric is talking about flying, feeling hype, getting high, airplane..... The concept of the song is scout girl :))) Scouts in summer camp is the reason why the kids got addicted, they let them use addictive substance illegally, and of course, the parents don’t know about this :))) anyways the song is fun and full of joy 🤣🤣🤣
