    This Mew glitch made me feel like I was in the illuminati. I'd battle someone that didn't know the trick and then bust out Mew. They'd be like "Whoaaaa. Do you have one of those GameSharks? Did you just get really lucky?!" So I'd be like "What... you haven't heard of it yet?"
    --"Heard of WHAT?!"
    ...Then I'd show them the glitch and it was like I was initiating them into an occult society. "Be careful who you share this secret wisdom with." Lol. Guaranteed friends forever. When I showed younger kids they looked at me as if I was a sorcerer putting a magic spell on the game. Pokemon was the best fad of my childhood.

      Sounds a lot like for a long time being the only kid in school that managed to find Mewtwo. Come back to the school the next day then during lunch and recess link your gameboy with another and battle. You only managed to take down just one of their pokemon and they've defeated 5 of yours. Your classmate is gloating and laughing at you saying you have no chance and you suck and you say something along the lines of "probably, but I still have one left so we'll see." Your classmate will gloat more and a lot of your other friends and peers are watching waiting to see the thrashing to be finished in glorious fashion. Then you grin ever so slightly and toss out your final pokemon, Mewtwo. Your opponent and everyone else watching is aghast and they're all asking, "Mewtwo! I've never heard of him! Where did you find him? How did you catch him?" You keep your secret to yourself and either don't speak at all or only give very basic and non-helpful answers. The battle continues but your opponent still being a butt continues to gloat proclaiming that even with a cool pokemon you still have no chance. You stomp all of his pokemon including his Zapdos and Dragonite and win. You then battle someone else who has a Gengar claiming their ghost pokemon is exactly what's needed to takedown Mewtwo and you thrash them too. This keeps up for weeks and your the talk of the whole school until the unfortunate but inevitable day when someone else comes in that and they've added Mewtwo to their team as well. Eventually the word on how to get him spreads and while you're still the first person to get him, you're no longer the king of the playground.

    Honestly this is very interesting, but the real question that nobody answers is how on earth did someone found this glitch in the beginning?
    Is it by studying the code of the game? Did it happen randomly?

    • @Proud_Knight
      @Proud_Knight Před 4 lety +61

      Both are equally probable possibilities. ARGs have shown than people are willing to go above and beyond to find secrets, even in the games code. It's absolutely possible that someone was looking into how the game worked and discovered the glitch via how it functions and decided to use it and even spread it around.
      I also know from experience that people can just wander around in games for hours doing random stuff just to see what happens. It's actually a pastime of mine to try and find ways to reach places you are not supposed to be able to reach in Dark Souls. It's possible someone was just wandering around in Gen1 Pokemon and happened to press pause at the right time. That would be the spark of curiosity that would personally send me wondering "Hey, I'm not supposed to be able to do this, I wonder what I can do from here"

    • @taxa1569
      @taxa1569 Před 4 lety +38

      Randomly is highly likely, my first memorable glitch experience was when GTA San Andreas released on PS2, I played a hell of a lot when somehow my ammo doubled for a whole heap of weapons I was holding and I had no idea how, that progressed into realising it has something to do with the gun range which I was messing around with at the time. After a good pile more random messing around I found out that by entering an Ammu nation gun range and immediately cancelling out of it before it brings up the first challenge. You activate the glitch. The only ammo types you can't double are grenades and heavy weapons as far as I can remember. Helped a lot when I wanted to get 100% completion (cheats gave you a negative percentage, the glitch did not)

    • @laggianput

    • @fleetfootgreyhound3903
      @fleetfootgreyhound3903 Před 4 lety +2

      i reckon it's probably a bit of both; someone probably found out the start menu oversight (allowing you to open the menu before a trainer sees you) by accident, wondered what exactly this does to the game's code, and then either compared it to what we know of the code to work out what it could be used for or trial and error'd that shit until this trick was discovered.
      I know for sure the trick wasn't discovered until 2003, but i'm not sure exactly how well gen 1 was documented in 2003. we're still discovering new oddities in these games all the time; arbitrary code execution within gen 1 wasn't discovered until the early 2010s, at the earliest. :P

  • @robogiraffe
    @robogiraffe Před 7 lety +615

    Why no mention of the experience underflow glitch? By using 6 growls on the pokemon you fight with 21 special, Mew's level will be set to 1 instead of 7. Then if Mew battles and gains less than 54 exp, it will be leveled up to 100 immediately. This is due to Mew having the medium-slow growth rate, which gives it -54 exp at level 1. The game interprets this negative number as a huge positive number and determines Mew's level is 100.

      In relation to another video you posted about MissingNo, what player name would I need to choose at the beginning to assure that I encounter Mew on Cinnabar during the MissingNo Glitch? I do not understand this Hex/Decimal coding system, but in theory, the right chosen name at the beginning of the game would assure one of the encountered pokemon during that glitch would be a Mew, thanks for any help you can provide.

  • @legionbeast
    @legionbeast Před 4 lety +11

    So, interesting side effect with the missingno glitch as it allows a near exact recreation of this.
    -Go to the safari zone
    -Go into a grassy patch containing pokemon you want (chansey, tauros, etc)
    -Let the footstep counter run to zero so that you're pulled out of the safari zone
    -Fly to Cinnebar as soon as you can
    -Surf along the coastline like you're looking for Missingno.
    This will have changed the value of the shoreline tiles to match the grass patch you were last in, which in this case is somewhere in the safari zone. Thus, you can now encounter Chansey and Tauros and such but they WON'T be able to run away from you like a little bitch.

    • @daijimenez
      @daijimenez Před rokem

      Cool.
      When I'm running the footsteps to 0, do you mean in the grass patch (meaning running away from any pkm) or going to the grass patch, then leave to a different zone and run the fsc to zero?

    • @legionbeast
      @legionbeast Před rokem +1

      @@daijimenez You want to be IN a grassy patch when the counter hits zero. This is easy to do if you have two steps in the grass and just go side to side or up and down. Doing this will freeze the value at THAT patch of safari zone grass and will let you surf up and down the coast and run into the pokemon there.
      So my suggestion is:
      -go to safari zone
      -go as deep into the safari zone as possible for the patches containing chansey and tauros
      -stay in the grass and keep running the Step counter down
      -you can try to catch pokemon or run away, whatever you want
      -after the timer is up and you are kicked out, fly to cinnebar island and surf up and down the coast.

    This is pretty good, but I feel like it should have included the "Ditto glitch" extension - where after fighting a trainer (to fix the RAM values, since otherwise it won't work) you fight a wild Ditto and get it to Transform into one of your own Pokemon with a specific Special stat, thereby having complete control over what you can encounter.
    I believe there's also a more recent method that lets you not have to fight any Trainers at all, but I don't remember how that one works.

    • @SkilledRoy
      @SkilledRoy Před 7 lety +17

      Instead of battling a second trainer, you can use Strength and push a boulder. That will reset the first two bits, allowing you to access your start menu again. If you do that, you can then go on to battle a Ditto to set the special stat you want.

    • @Neogeddon
      @Neogeddon Před 7 lety +4

      Frez Person Before using Strength, you need to save by switching boxes in your PC, then reload the game. Yes, you can use the PC even when dialog is disabled.
      This method is good if you have no extra trainers left to battle. It's best done by flying to Fuchsia City, saving there, then walking over to the Warden's house.

You have to save through a PC (switching boxes) first though (and reset the game afterwards), to be able to talk to the guy or to use strength.
      Easiest way is to talk to the guy in pewter city imo.

Thank you for actually explaining why the glitch happens and how to make it happen, the map in the description is all I needed to be able to do it myself. See, I had already defeated the trainers everyone shows in the tutorials. And everyone seems to be using the same route, so I thought it just wasn't possible for me to get Mew... And I didn't want to start a new file because this one has pokémons from other versions that I exchanged and I didn't want to lose them. The route you choose in your video wouldn't work for me because I had already defeated the 1st trainer. But looking at the map, I ran all around Kanto to find a compatible trainer that I hadn't defeated yet until I found one in the water south of Pallet town. its 11 months later but he did exp underflow, and the nidoking before brock is actually the exact same glitch as the mew glitch in every way, including long range trainer, regaining proper control, fighting a Pokemon with a specific special stat, and then executing the exp underflow glitch much like you would fighting mew so its the sort of "proof" that the glitch can be used for any pokemon

      This glitch also can be used to duplicate items in Yellow, since the old man glitch only works in Red and Blue.

    • @ccandrew111
      @ccandrew111 Před 7 lety +4

      it most definitely will. the item duplication occurs because of the game writing the 'seen' bit for MissigNo. in the pokedex. because there are only meant to be 150 pokedex entries, the value that is set will be outside of the pokedex in memory. it just happens to be the bit for the amount of items in your 6th inventory slot, and will add 128 due to it being the most significant bit.

    • @SkilledRoy
      @SkilledRoy Před 7 lety +5

      That's mentioned in the video, the level is determined by the attack stat modifier. Defaults to 7, but is increased/decreased by up to 6 by moves like Growl and Swords Dance.

      @humongofrog Před 7 lety +3

      There's a particularly great glitch involving level 1 Pokemon acquired from this glitch. You see, they never intended you to get a Level 1 Pokemon - This was before breeding, and the lowest level Pokemon on the first route are level 2. As such, level 1 Pokemon have a negative amount of experience, or something of the sort. I don't know exactly why, but if a level 1 Pokemon gets less experience than they need to level up, the game all of a sudden thinks they have a lot of experience, and makes them level 100 instantly.

    • @TaismoFanBoy
      @TaismoFanBoy Před 7 lety +2

      It's because it reads a negative integer as an unsigned integer. 11110 as a negative, reads -1. 11110 as an unsigned reads 30. The more 1s you add, the worse it gets. This glitch only works with slower experience curves though, because the faster experience curves don't start you negative in level 1 (happy accident. The curves were made intending level 2 to be the start, but the faster ones coincidentally are fast enough to not be negative at level 1). Scrumpy could probably elaborate better later on.

Missingno's normal form is safe in RB (apart from corrupting hall of fame data), but VERY DANGEROUS in Y (can crash your game, corrupt save and if it doesn't crash, it plays a very long and creepy cry). Missingno also has ghost and fossil forms which are safe in Yellow.

      RBA itself is relatively easy to understand. Four bytes corresponding to the items on B, C. Next three bytes saying which slot in your inventory the C button items are equipped from. Say you catch a fish in a bottle you have equipped to C is. So by changing what item you have on C>, you can get it to write bottle-of-fish to many different slots in your inventory, including to slots which store your quest progress (Medallions, etc.). And by changing what you catch in the bottle, you can write different values to those addresses.

    why is mew in the game in the first place if it cannot be obtained by legitimate methods???

    • @pudimfilms
      @pudimfilms Před 6 lety +8

      It was possible to get a Mew in special events. In Japan.

      @zDisturbed1 Před 6 lety +4

      It was possible to get mew from events worldwide not just in Japan. I got one before gen 2 came out by standing in line at Toys r us to get a sticker sheet and if under the mew sticker it said "Caught me" you won meaning you had to go back a month or two later after Nintendo had sent a red/blue cartrige loaded with mews and they would trade you a mew for whatever random Pokemon you sent them.

    red is the only trainer I know who can fly around Kanto for 12 hours

  • @Fsilone
    @Fsilone Před 4 lety +1

    You can also do the glitch without battling another trainer if you Fly to Fuchsia, save your game by changing PC boxes and resetting (which re-opens your start menu because the game no longer thinks you're engaged, but is still trying to move an NPC), then go next door to the Safari Zone warden's house and use Strength on the boulder. Then you can use the Ditto method with a Pokemon of your own with a Special of 21, or battle any wild Pokemon and see what pops up. I believe the wild Drowzee on Route 11 sometimes have a Special of 21, but I'm not sure, nor at which of the levels they appear at.

    Awesome video! I'm not a programmer, but I was able to understand everything well. One question though...how finicky is the timing on pressing start? Any advice?

      ***** Yep. But what I say still stands. If you understand how games of the era were coded, you could figure it out through trial and error.

    • @thomaspickin9376
      @thomaspickin9376 Před 7 lety

      There were Gameboy emulators around in 1995/1996 when this game came out, so I think some people did know how to access the code... Accessing the code isn't that hard if you know anything about electrical engineering. It's just a ROM chip inside a cartridge, so you just rip the data from that. There were also cheat cartidges around then to mess around with memory.
      A glitch isn't found all at once anyway, usually something breaks and then you go back and figure out why by trial and error and possibly examining the code. This was also probably found by many people contributing. It's a long process for something useful to be found.

    But why are the Pokémon level 7?

    • @MagicScrumpy
      @MagicScrumpy  Před 7 lety +10

      It gets the level from CD2E, which was overwritten in the battle. By default, this value is 7, but lowering or raising the opponent's attack changes this value and in turn changes the level of the encounter.

    I found this to be an excellent description for the layman of programming in a memory-scarce model and how updating memory addresses and changing game states leads to behaviors that become loopholes.
