Shad without the sword in front of a crowd of reenactors is like not having pants at school
A complete nightmare
Im surprised he didn't feel naked without it 😂
You mean they didn't all wear chainmail, bikinis, and animal skins? Why has school and media failed me!?
I mean, leather is technically animal skins...
@@ServantofBaal Who knows, maybe Shad's got a chainmail bikini underneath his tunic...
"Why has media failed me?" Keep asking that question :/
@@Zachomara is that something to o with the other guy's underwear comment?
Don't forget badly stitched leather clothes.. and bracers.. lots of bracers.. studded leather ones. lol
Shad looks like he's rallying an army to war
If he doesn't do this next time, I'll be disappointed.
Who says he isn't?? Lol
Didn't you know, Shad will lead the Area 51 Raid.
@@VertexDon But what if Area 51 has machicolations?
@@buddyltd Well in this case they might also need a Dragon.
I was the guy who said your underwear! Yes, hello Shad! 👋💯🍻
It was awesome to meet you mate ^_^
Wonderful thank you!
When shad asked "how do you know?" All i could think was 'I'm actually a high level rouge' 😂
Indeed.
Hmm… 🤔
*BUT WHAT ABOUT DRAGONS?*
Signed - proud Norman Bro.
wait were you with the three at the back?
@@gasmaskguys4965 Yep. I'm one of the three Bens. I assume you know the Ben dressed as the Knight Hospitaller?
I'm kinda new here. It's some referenc to an old video of the channel?
@@holothewisewolf405 It's a reference to Shad's habit of asking if fantasy fortifications would be able to defend against dragons. If you haven't seen them, any of his videos on fantasy cities and castles are brilliant. That's what got me into his channel.
@@buddyltd thanks, i will :)
Your baggy clothing could be explained by coming from Eastern Europe: high boots, baggy pants and a long tunic is pretty much a stereotypical look for 15th century Russian nobles.
Your tunic is a bit plain and your sword isn't curved (eg: a sabre or shashka), but I expect that your coat has more embriodery on it and you are following that exotic western euro weapons fashion just to show how sophisticated your tastes are.
"Today we're trying some medieval cooking. We're going to ROAST MY OUTFIT!"
-Shad, paraphrased
"You'd expect the sword to be blunt, but I'm a savage."
but..... what about dragons?
Great video! Call me crazy, but I'd swear that getting a tunic dyed that blue would have been prohibitively expensive, given the scarcity of Blue dyes before the Renaissance and the discovery of Prussian Blue.
-B
Lols, coming in with the deep facts I see there, or do you have some type of affinity with the color blue?
No, you are wrong. Blue was especially one of the colours worn by the poor people in the early middle ages since only the rich could get red or purple dyed clothing. Blue colour could be easily made from the common woad plant. You may have confused it with the French laws that prohibited wearing the colour blue in the late middle ages because it became associated with the royalty of France.
@@ThunderAndGuillon This.
Thunder And Guillon blue can be easily dyed, yes. But, historic woad takes a substantial amount of time to prepare and that deep of a blue would have taken many dying “sessions” or dips.
@@guyjohnson242 It would still be far more easy to make than the creation of purple dye.
That is one fantastically educated audience!
"You're walking around with a blunt sword."
"This is a sharp sword."
*ROASTED*
I never knew they had HD capable recording cameras back in medieval times!
Hello there again.
Justin, of course they did! How else could we see the adventures of Robin Hood?

I like how respectfull you are towards some of the people who are trying to troll you
Except I wasn’t trying to troll. I was genuinely speaking.
@@PowerfulRift Let's be honest; would you expect that "underwear" would've been one of the things he really was referring to when asking about inaccuracies?
Unfortunately everyone before me had taken everything I had to say so "underwear" was the only thing remaining.
@@PowerfulRift Yeah so It still was a troll answer though. I'm not blaming you for that, but for pretending like it wasn't for trolling.

Shad Facts: shad skipping stone has finally finished. It has circumnavigated the globe 3 times sunk 3 boats, damaged a dingy, popped 3 boyes, and finally ending inside a lighthouse.
Said lighthouse broke and led to the sinking of 3 more ships as they broke on the rough australian shore. There are rumors of merfolk being crushed by the wreckage. However those are not proven as of yet.
What about sea dragons? Any of them hit?
Buoys
@Raziel\m/ no, just no. Not here and not now.

I wonder how he'd be feeling if they finished up by following his request on all levels...?
I love that your about the author page is simply "he likes swords." The most direct about the author page i have ever seen.
We need TV show about Shadiversity.
Hear hear!
How about a TV show based off his book
yes we do I would defently watch it n it can be similar to liberties kids too.
NO NO NO NO NO NO... Tv ruins everything it touches. Shad needs to stay on youtube or writing his books
I was literally just wondering about medieval clothing before I saw this, get out of my head Shad
Well it's either that or Google Ads shows you some cheap medieval cuirass as soon as you think about it
Literally went too my area's festival and bought clothes the weekend before this video 😂😂
And i was thinking about shad instead of clothing O_o - clothing get out of my head!.. What?
I must be ahead a bit. I needed this video 2 years ago lol.
"get out of my head Shad" - Cue Shad singing the Kylie Minogue hit "Can't Get You Out Of My Head"
That one about pants/underwear was surprising. I was very amused.
BUT WE NEVER GOT AN ANSWER...
Indeed.
@Sightless_Seeker that is a myth. A fallacy. A slander.
Well, depending on the period, he wasn't wrong. For the target period of the 1400s, Shad is correct that you can't see the underwear, however, if you went a bit earlier, you would be able to see that the hoes would be tied to the points of the doublet and if this outfit had the correct hoes, that might be something you could see.

@@eddard9442 I think he cares very much so. It is easy to speak in front of a crowd of you genuinely have a passion for the subject you are talking about and not everyone has a problem with public speaking.
-5 for not dropping the tunic to show hard-core cliche barbarian armour :-P
But what about DRAGONS!??????
I think the Norman Bros knew the inaccuracies the whole time. They were seeing if the others did.
I will neither confirm nor deny the facts of this comment.
Signed - proud Norman Bro.
Thong stitching on the pouch. Ring belt vs buckled. Cuffs on the tunic/houpelaunde. Early period keyhole neck with late period button cuffs. Boots with added soles. No under-tunic/shirt. And with those additions, I'm off to the Maine (US) Renaissance Faire for the weekend.... Might do a similar talk sitting around my tent while I remove my armor tomorrow.
I was captivated the whole time. You are a great public speaker!
I'm glad that even people who deal with history regularly still get confused between "14th century" and "1400s"; it makes me feel better about when I do it.
Hence the SCA: Society for Creative Anachronism. It makes much more sense to me now.
It's great to see you so enthusiastic explaining 15th century fashion to the public. Can't wait for the full vid.
Shad is enthusiastic! And so is the crowd! What a wonderful community. Learning and laughing together.

Man I love how appreciative you are of feedback from fans it's stuff like that why I respect you so much.
TED Talk coming soon.
I was wondering about the colouring of your outfit Shad, how authentic was the process used to the time period, and, if unknown, how close to actual colours of the time is the outfit?
As always, love the Vids.
Ps. Everyone... this is Australia.... IN WINTER!
Operator Hoot I was also wondering about this, most specifically the Blue. I've been under the impression that blue pigment is really quite hard to source before 1706 when Diesbach accidentally synthesized Prussian Blue for the first time. Meaning the tunic would probably be absurdly expensive to manufacture compared to a tunic of almost any other color.
@@Oskiirrr You can achieve some decent blues via wode or idigo the colour may be too blue but its hard to tell without looking at it realistically. The real issue is the mordant (how to stick the pigment) that can be expensive to achive a solid colour but not as much as you expect blue cloth is often listed as a common trade comodity
Imaging Knyght Errant suddenly jumping out of the crowd and singel-handedly destroying your outfit up to every misplaced stitch.
Shadow of the Conqueror arrived a few days ago! It looks really good so far and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Keep living your dreams man! 👌🏻

"Google isn't the best source of information"
If only more people realized this truth...
But, but, "Google knows all"... doesn't it? :D :D :D
Luckily, we still have Wikipedia 😁
Hrmm, it's almost as if the ignorant should be informed of other possible information sources.. if only there was some way to do that. Perhaps with words in a comment for people to see, for starters.
I see that I'm not the only one who was surprised to find that Shad is a great public presenter.
I hope that Shad sees this because it's funny, but I had an English teacher in college who was talking about antiquated words and I asked if she meant an anachronism, and she insisted that that word wasn't used anymore despite her describing it's meaning.
I even asked if she was saying that the word anachronism was, in and of itself, an anachronism. She said yes, but looked confused by the question.
Well, she's silly because it's not used not because it's out of time but because it is just the type of word that has a very specific meaning that doesn't come up in conversation often.
@@odotawaissaku3755 Yep, so uncommonly used that an English professor couldn't think of it in her first lecture.
Hmm, not used anymore, Oh wow, try telling that to the Soca folks of America, (Society of Creative Anachronisms)! They'll be horrified.
@@nicholaslawlor8623 I'll bet.

Shad, you were amazing on EFAP, you bring invaluable perspective to the show and you presented really strong points in the whole adaptation vs objectivity discussion. Great stuff, you voiced some of the things I wish I could tell them during the Nerdrotic debate. Hope you will appear there regularly.
Definitely, those guys are great.
Houpelande, yes, you did a fairly decent job at pronouncing it the first time.
Thanks for writing that don, I had no idea how that was spelled, and seeing how it's a french word with all the historical grammar and whatnot, I had no chance
@@Tranzisto You're welcome. I am no expert but I do love delving into medieval enthusiasm every now and then. Feel free to ask me anything regarding all those weird french words 👍.
I can't believe no one is calling out the color blue. Blue dye was very expensive so if their was any blue color it would be a small amount of it and only the rich wold be able to afford it.
It depends on the region. They used woad(i hope google translated that right in german it's "Waid") to make blue dye and this plant still grows around my hometown but nobody uses it today. For the colour blue you only need woad, lots of time and urine. It was not cheap but not so expensive like other colours.
By the fifteenth century, Asian indigo was being imported into Europe, lowering the cost of natively produced woad (which contains the same indigo dye as indigo) to the point where it was affordable for more people than you are suggesting. It’s absolutely possible to obtain this shade of blue using woad. But only on animal fibres such as wool or silk. You need synthetic dye to obtain this shade of blue on cotton or linen. So it’s the fabric/colour combination that makes it anachronistic. Not the colour itself.
cool didn't know that, it is just no flags or paintings at that time had no blue in them ex of the rich. but still may have been only for the uperclass
You have a real talent for public speaking! Engaging AND Educating an audience like that is no easy feat!

So often this kind of information is given with the air of "let me impart my wisdom upon you undeserving idiots" in it's attitude. Thank you for being a gentleman. :)
It would help if we could see the stitching XD
HOWEVER, stitching in the cuffs was most common amongst vikings, celts, and late 14th- early 15th century nobility, typically on ceremony garb.
Typically stitching before, and after, this was solely on the clothing where it was highly noticable
