    Some people might be installing a back up camera so it will make it easier for them to run over kid’s bikes. That’s why I’m going to install one in my car.

    With the plate being on the bumper, not on the hatch, you can also go under the vehicle along the wire loom that goes to the cab and come in through the firewall wiring grommet. Harbor freight sell the flexible plastic wire loom to run your wires in. The way he is doing it keeps the wire safe and dry inside the vehicle. Much better.

      He covered it as much as it can be covered. If you don't know how to properly use a digital multimeter to test voltage on the wire you can probably find it at your vehicles BCM usually in one of your kick panels. But you can get it at the back of the taillight assembly near where you're mounting the camera but again a multimeter to find the correct wire without blowing up your car. If you don't understand basic electricity then you're better off letting a stereo shop do it for you. Otherwise chances are your going to cost yourself alot more money than what a backup camera costs when you inadvertently fry a computer in your car..it's not rocket science by any means but with that said you do need to know what your doing. Every vehicle has a different color wire and it can be in different areas in your vehicle. Therefore you need to be able to properly figure it out on your own.

      Paul Aguilar the location varies with each make and varies with each model. There is an industry standard for the color of the reverse wire, which is orange/white. But as the vehicles get older this becomes no longer true. I know this is old but maybe it’ll clear some things up for someone else.

    If I may ask, wouldn't have been more efficient to power the camera from the reverse light's power wires?
    Such a connection will only power the camera when the gearbox is set in reverse, thus (probably) prolonging the camera's life.

      That is correct. That is the ideal connection if you only want to power the camera when car is in reverse. I want to have it on all the time so I ran my wires to the monitor up front. Still haven't been able to get the setup to work. I think I have a defective camera, monitor, or both.

      Current stereos have the ability to select and show it without having to put the car in reverse for various (not not fully common) reasons. You can wire into the reverse for the trigger but you want constant power to be able to view it whenever.

  • @kohanadiver
    @kohanadiver Před 5 lety

    On the Xterra, can you be a little more clearer on the color code of the parking brake wire in the kick panel, an how to hook to the reverse light at the rear of the Xttera. In the video you hooked that unit to the license plate light, which I assume powers both the bracket plate lights and the camera.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  Před 5 lety

      The parking brake wire should be green in most of those Xterras. Depending on the year it could potentially vary. Tapping into the reverse light circuit allows for both the camera and the license plate light to operate. • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  Před 6 lety

      That wire coming off the back of the Boss radio should be connected to a wire in the vehicle that is only active when the vehicle is in reverse as its meant to automatically bring up a backup camera video feed. If the harness you are using to install the new radio does not give you a reverse gear wire, then you will have to hunt one down in the dash. If you purchased this gear from us, you can call our technical support for help. Their number should be on your invoice. If you purchased it elsewhere and they are not able to help, you might try calling Boss for assistance.

      Yes, I have a reverse gear wire. In the front it is connected to the reverse wire from the back of the radio. At the other end the reverse gear wire is hook up to the reverse backup light in the rear. It is grounded to the black wire with the license plate camera. When I turn on the system, the panel freezes up and no controls work. I then have to go into settings and turn off the reverse under other menu in order for everything else to work minus the camera. I will definitely place a call to the tech on this.

      Most backup cameras do have a wide viewing angle, or you could go with a flush mount camera that you could install in any location that you found suitable.
      There are also times that an OEM mount backup camera may be available for some models of cars.

    I have an SUV with the license plate in the hatch (2006 Mazda Tribute). That's going to be an interesting install, but I think I am up for it. Just need to get the wiring throug the hatch somewhere, then up behind the plastic hatch panel, and the hard part will be getting it up through the rear window frame and I hope to be able to fit it through the stock rubber wiring boot for the rear defroster/wiper and out under the headliner, down the rearmost pillar cover, and out in the area behind one of the platic interior covers that goes over the wheel well. Then im golden as the wires for the lights are running right there to tap into the reverse light positive for camera power and trigger (I have already had that panel off to repair a rusted out wheel well/shock mount, if you have a first gen Mazda Tribute/Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner you know the pain I'm sure). Then all I have to run up all the kick panels the radio is the RCA cable with the trigger wire on it and done, I think.

      It should not be necessary. If the additional camera gets its power from the main unit, then that's got it covered. If the new camera's power wire is designed to be spliced into the stock wiring, then its typically being connected to a switched and fused circuit in the vehicle

      This particular rear-view camera's frame, did come with additional lights to help to illuminate the rear license plate. The connections made at the bumper locations, were power connections to the factory license plate lighting system, and only provided power to the additional lighting on the new license plate bracket.

    What confuses me is the positive wire for the backup cam. I've seen some say to tap it into an accessory wire, and others say tap it into the reverse lights. He used the switched power wire at the radio location because that can be easier if the wires are long enough to run to the radio location along with the video cable. Pin 8 on the 10-pin connector has ground... Unless factory equipment has chassis grounding, there's NO way I'm using chassis grounding.. Take your factory radio out, get a multi-meter, set it to continuity testing, put one probe on the radio casing - the metal, then take the other probe and find ground. Go across the pins and see which ones tone out - and that's your ground. Looks much better; that and soldering with heat shrink.. Took me a whopping 30sec to find which pin I needed for ground...
    And don't forget kids, ground that e-brake sensor wire! You don't need a relay to get around that, just ground it..

      Some in dash radios have two options for viewing the camera. Pioneer has a menu where you can view the camera any time even when driving forward. It also has an input from the back up light to show the camera when revers is selected. In that case, you power the camera all the time from the main hot wire, as well as connecting the reverse input wire from the radio directly to the backup light wire. You can then view the camera anytime.
