Daryl Hall and John Oates. Two names and yet one meaning. The meaning is 80's.

As a 90s kid I was introduced to this song by Rockstar Games through GTA Vice City and their iconic radio stations. This still stays one of my all-time favorites.

I used to play vice city all the time!! Love that game 🎮 and the Music
Same here man. I swear I owe everything to Vice City because without it I wouldn't have been exposed to 80s music and all it had to offer. Definitely one of the greatest highlights I have of the 2000s. Playing through the Definitive Edition is bringing all those memories back and it's been so fantastic.

Ain't that the truth? Geesh!!!! Protection orders and stalking... This is getting wild.
Sad but unfortunately true 😭😭😭
Somehow they combined just the right amount of cheese, sexiness, and substance into this song and video. It's an 80's masterpiece which can be enjoyed in any decade.
No cheese at all... I take this song very seriously. It pours happyness in my quite empty heart...
Surprisingly, if you listen to some interviews, Daryl absolutely hated this video and the way it was filmed thinking it took away from the meaning of the song. But I think most fans think it's fine and fits in well with the 80s.
Nah… way too much sexiness.😵
@keinan rogan Friends tell friends why it's dumb to be atheist::
1. God often hides from nations of sinners, then unleashes terror.
2. If you think God stopped doing this, then you haven't read Revelation.
3. Why God banned graven images:: it can lead ALL to worship sun, moon, & stars. It's Satanism.
4. Porn is graven images. It's led people away from Jesus. Pew Research says America already has as many as 1.5 million witches, Wiccans. Lgbt flags are in schools. Drag queen story hours are happening in libraries and even churches. Satanists already push to have Satanic statues at state capitol buildings. They have after school Satan clubs.
Atheism leads most people to Democratism.
Terror will be the result.
@@clickhereforshowittoothers2184 wth does this have to do with anything, also warning an atheist about God’s punishment is a little silly seeing as they don’t believe in god in the first place.

So glad you Found the Sound..However you found it you were Blessed. I was There, and loved those Times🎉
Saw them in concert a few years ago. They still got such great stage presence! 40 years later and still rocking better than any modern band!
The key to the 80's was simplicity, the lyrics were so simple yet very meaningful .if you're listening to this in 2021 you're definitely not out of time
Man, the key to the 80's music was making great music. Plain and simple, hands down. That's it!
as someone who graduated in the mid 80's i would say two things make the difference. First, pitch correction. Second, auto tune (and yes they are different, auto tune is putting the music to a grid so their are no human "errors" in the music, pitch correction is for voice)
i dont know how much meaning there is to:
Smoking guns hot to the touch
Would cool down if we didn't use them so much, yeah
Still love the song though
And synths
Absolutely!

Imagine hearing this song for the first time in the 80s. I'd lose my absolute sh*t.
I did. As strong as this song was musically (it made me buy one of the first albums in my life), it was just one out of, perhaps, hundreds of well made singles - across all genres - during that time. It seemed normal. We would hear it on a radio and it was like a drug; we had to wait - addicted - for days, to hear the song again. When it finally played, it was like getting a wish granted by a genie. A real treat.
Decades later, I realized the 80's were a Golden Age in entertainment. We didn't know it at the time. We assumed music, TV, movies, etc. would continue, qualitatively speaking. But it went downhill in many ways and I haven't seen any indication of a massive return.
The only entertainment that has categorically improved are things that aren't a fair comparison: modern "long arc" TV series (e.g. Yellowstone, Black Sails, Battle Star Galactica, West World, etc.) and extraoridinarily immersive video games. The closest 80's equivalent would be an occasional "mini series" - maybe once a week for 8 weeks (guessing) and a text-based, story game, with very limited choices and command vocabulary.
Seven year old me did. This was the first tape (yes, tape) I had.
The first time I heard it with the intro, "Dance on your knees" I lost my sh*t back then.
I was fortunate enough to have first listened to this song when it first came out in late ‘84 and yes, I did lose my sh!t. Absolutely.
I remember hearing this song for the first time in 1984. It was a memorable event for me!

I can’t really explain the feeling that 80’s music transmits to me, it’s almost like a nostalgia from a time when I wasn’t even born yet, like a fake nostalgia, and from a time that people were so naive, without knowing what they could encounter in the future era, that they were genuinely happy with their lives and what surrounded them, but one thing is right, that feeling is amazing…
I thought i was the only 1..😯🙏💯🤝🤝
Dude exactly how I feel! I cry at times wishing I could go back and stay there forever.

The word you seek is anemoia. Nostalgia for a time you've never known or experienced.
Thankfully, I experienced the 80's but felt anemoia for the 60's/70/s when listening to music from back then as music does that to people. ANEMOIA!!!!!! 👊

Today is singer/songwriter/musician John Oates' 76th birthday (born April 7, 1948). He is best known as half of the duo, Hall & Oates (with Daryl Hall). He co-wrote many of the top 10 songs that Hall & Oates recorded, including (with Hall): "Sara Smile" (the song refers to Hall's then-girlfriend, Sara Allen), "She's Gone", and "Out of Touch", as well as (with Allen and Hall): "You Make My Dreams", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "Adult Education". He also sang lead vocals on several more singles in the Hot 100, such as "How Does It Feel to Be Back", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (a remake of the 1965 song performed by the Righteous Brothers that was written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil), on which Oates shared lead vocals with Hall, and "Possession Obsession" (with Allen & Hall). Oates was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004,and in 2014, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of Daryl Hall & John Oates. His memoir, Change of Seasons, was published in 2017.❤

I remember visiting family in Florida almost every year (from Chicago) and driving along long causeways next tot eh ocean and songs like this playing back in the 80s. Amazing times. I really do feel bad for young people these days. 99% of the music and accompanying experiences just suck.
My dad just died suddenly of a heart attack on March 3rd. He was a bad person that was a drunk and high on pain pills. It caused my mom to divorce him when I was 6 years old. Years went by before I would even speak to him again. I didn't even start talking to him until I was 24 years old. Then I finally saw him when I was 30 years old. He went to church, and had been going to AA meetings sponsoring younger people, changing their lives, and shaping golf courses for Jack Nicholas all around the world. The last 18 years we went hunting and fishing twice a year when I had vacation time. This song hits different now.
Respect how your father came out of the dark and changed his life and others for the better. At last with 30 years you had a father, better late than never.
My girls were born in late 70s,and this was part of the sound track of their lives! Love these guys!

Hall’s voice here is its own universe.
I wish this kind of music would come back, maybe I’m biased but it all feels so dreamy and romantic even though I’ve never experienced it. Such passion
well... YOU JUST EXPERIENCED IT
(as one that lived through it) there it is mate.
the difference is , in our time
1. We were young (like .. 2nd grade young)
2. This music was everywhere, in the shop, at the bus stop, at home, in the disco, at the roller rink, everywhere
so when you have a constant influence of positivity like this , You feel fucking awesome
3. Then.. the world was different as well
- No LGBTQ
- no Flat earthers
- No Trolls
- Not much stupidity
and if any of those decided to rear their heads they were told to fuck off
Trying starting a debate in the 80s like
- Let's discuss what defines a personal as male or female
EXPECT THE RESPONSE........ Ohhh Fuck off mate !!!
- But.. No really the earth is flat
EXPECT THE RESPONSE........ Ohhh Fuck off mate !!!
- Trolling got you a punch in the face,
We called these people FUCKWITS
- As for stupidity , Your first offence would result in everyone looking at you and laughing at you and saying
.....DUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHH!!!!
LOL
After a while you pick up the rules of being normal and not being a fuckwit
so, that's why the world was a better place
and then the music made it fucking better
Then....
YOU HAD CHOICES
Were you a pop person
Were you a rap person
Were you a heavy metal person
Your choices were
Really fucking good
Awesome
fucking Awesome
Amazing beyond words
and without a lie, ... when these are your choices YOU ACCEPT IT AS NORMAL, NOT AS AWESOME
You just figure.... Hey, they are professionals and they are Artist's .
it took my generation 30 years to figure out how fucking good we had it BY SEEING COMMENTS LIKE YOURS
Make no mistake... YOUR GENERATION MAKES MY GENERATION UNDERSTAND WHAT WE HAD
but it was dreamy and cool and romantic and you could find a chick and get with her and it was cool because the music suited the mood
IT WAS A GOOD TIME TO BE ALIVE
IT WAS A GOOD TIME TO BE A KID
Everything was new and emerging
We had technology ... but not too much
We still had to do shit on our own and not be lazy
We learned respect and if we didn't we got a punch in the face and then we did learn it
LESSONS IN LIFE MATE... Simple as that
People can say what they like but if you go to school in the 80s and you decide your'e going to be a prick to someone
Sooner or later something is going to happen to you that makes you wish
you never fucking did that
you have the living fucked kicked out of you
AND AS A RESULT, WHEN YOUR'E AN ADULT, YOU'RE NOT A DICKHEAD
The system works
there was no hiding behind a keyboard
if you did shit, someone would threaten to bash you
if you hid from the bashing ....
- We'd get on our BMX Bikes and find where you lived (YES.. REALLY LOL) i guess it sounds funny now to say it, but yes this is what we did
- When you came outside, You'd be bashed
You couldn't run from a bashing, sooner or later you'd be somewhere where the other person was, School, the shops, your own house, whatever
and if you actively ran away from it.. YOU WERE A FUCKING PUSSY FOR LIFE.
IMPORTANT LESSONS WERE LEARNED
EVERYONE KNEW THE LESSONS
AND THE MUSIC WAS AWESOME
AND FIGHTS WERE FAIR, You went hard but everyone knew when enough was enough
you win the fight, you help the other guy up
if he did anything on the way up, he'd have the shit kicked out of him and then you leave him down
it was all fair
great time to be alive and i'd do it again in a heartbeat
Depending on what specifically you love about this song, I feel like there are bands like this, they're just not super popular or well known. Not in a hipster way, as in what constitutes "pop" music is just very different now.

Same here, and I didn't even live in the 80's
Im a 38 year old black man. This is my jam. There... I said it

Hall and Oates is one of those groups where I've met people from many different backgrounds and ethnicities that are totally loved for their music
En meg feher magyar vagyok,de a jo zenet hallgatom...Udvozlet
Their 6th and last #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 from late 1984. I love it still after (almost) 40 years!
Artists who licensed their music to GTA were very smart. Songs hit different when you’re cruising in a freshly stolen sports car.
💯💪🏽
CHEETAH ; )
Yes
It’s even better when your running over citizens
This comment made me want to play GTA so bad that it should be their new slogan.
"Songs hit different when you’re cruising in a freshly stolen sports car."
Like say less...
They really had a hard edge to them, groundbreaking stuff. The transitions, layering, the dynamics, the arrangement and lyrics are masterful. This song is a MONSTER!
Seriously. This song and video are such a great feat of music production.
It's a Big Bam Boom of a song!

Oh shit, so well said! U should hear all the 12 inch versions; I can’t deicide which 1 is my fav.- well, all of them! Can you believe John Oates wrote the song, as it sounds like Daryl lyrics, but John thought Daryl would be the better singer, for it, and he was right!💜🎉💫🌟🎊❄️☃️🕊🎄🎁
Hard edge.....well put...like a lot of 80s pop. Now pop is overall ...lacking power and that ...that vibe that grabs your soul and stirs it.....! I love the bass line in this song.
This song is as old as dirt. But still as strong, Powerful, fantastic. One of the best song s ever made.👍🥰🌹
Sucks to hear that these two have officially split! 🥺💔 So many great songs, so many good memories! The end of an era! 😞
Don't worry guys the 80s will be back in sixty years
Shit you right
I'll probably be dead anyway
In sixty years i gonna be to old to dance this song
그 전까진 자살할꺼임
I'll be 94 in 2080.
Director: How 80s do you want this video to be?
Hall & Oates: Yes
lmao! And the irony is if you ask them now, they HATE this video. It's a total 80s time capsule, and I love it.
@@jonthomas8569 this is like their best music video imo
D J Chris, you gave me a great laugh! Thanks.
2024 and this still hits. Timeless classic, loved the 80s. Take me back please!
It brought me so much joy growing up during the best time and as I get older, it brings me great sadness realizing that kids today will never know...
Don't worry they have Taylor swift and mumble rappers lol
Hall & Oates was/is an 80's band with great diversity of music technique. The music style combines pop, rock, R&B,/ blue-eyed soul. It really is amazing.
So true. Groundbreaking stuff. I once asked a friend of mine, who is black, why is it that so many black folks love Daryl Hall and John Oates?
She responded "It's because they have SOUL." So true!
They were Hot from mid 70's my friends!
I saw them live only once and it was a fantastic show. It was my 2nd rock concert ever. (Loverboy was my first)
They even had some chopped and screwed accents, visionaries!
Just saw them last Sunday near Houston. What a concert! So nostalgic, I just returned to the 80s that night. They are as cool as ever, love this music!
You very lucky extremely lucky person 🙌🏼
Jesus pal, I saw them on 1984 and they were fantastic then lol ! How time flies, incredible to hear they're still going. Just goes to show their music is timeless
Exactly! Timeless music
did they do the dance
@@justapeanut_ Friends shouldn't let friends be atheists::
1. God often gives up on his people when they sin, then unleashes terror.
2. If you think God stopped doing this, then you haven't read Revelations.
3. Why God banned graven images:: it can lead ALL to worship sun, moon, & stars. PEW Research says America had as many as 1.5 million witches in 2018.
4. Porn = graven images. It's led people away from Jesus. Satanism is already rampant.
5. The problem with atheism is it leads our society to Democratism...then...terror!
The Dance Moves though... Lol... Ahhh the magical era of the 80's... 😎

You can see they had fun doing this. It was not just money. Creativity must come from joy to last.
One of the most amazing bands of all times ❤

Hello, how are you doing today? Nice meeting you on here..
1984 - Essa música é demais!
2023 - Essa música ainda é demais!
Amo essa musica , era mágico as musicas dos anos 70 80 e 90 😊
If this is a crime, lm guilty
Verdade, acabei de escutar e já gostei
Alguém consegue me explicar porque eu gosto tanto dessas músicas do anos 80?
Porque só tem música boa e atemporal
Even after all of these years, this song still gives me goosebumps
You give me goosebumps with your beauty my pretty friend ,just adorable.

I'm 50 & it still gives me goosebumps as well. Definitely the sign of a great song.
As a teenager in the 80's , it really was the best decade, and is the best as far as music goes!
Can I ask, did you find them hot/attractive? Heated debate as to whether this was viewed as ironic and dorky or trendy and fit!
90s was best

@@scottfox7642 Are you watching Cobra Kai? 😂
@sneaky beaver Honestly. I feel like everybody says this about the generation right after theirs but for people from the 80s-90s is kind of reasonable. Gen Z is very confusing and weird to get used to since it’s very advanced and so many people are now very confusing. Like trans people, non-binary, feminists, etc. Hippies were the closest thing the 80s has to the LGBTQ community.

I'm grateful for the invention of CZcams because we can view classic music videos like this one and others at anytime that we want. 1980s music rocks.

True. At the time, I had to watch MTV 24/7 for a week to have a chance to see the video I wanted.
@@badgame2399 that's a good question and the answer is that it has nothing to do with kids
One of the best video and song of the 80's. Great sound, stuff and lyrics.
When you discover hall and oates , realize youve heard every one of their hits and had no idea they wrote some of the greatest hits ever.
80 million records no streams. Enough said.
