  • In Part 4 of our series on how to make a plug for a mold, Stephan is ready to make the first layup of polyester laminating resin and fiberglass over the foam mold he has been constructing, fairing and perfecting.
With a few layers of release wax, Stephan is able to confidently apply gelcoat to the plug and know that it will come off with the fiberglass he has applies, as part of the mold.
This method is useful for building just about any part you need, and can be translated to work with a number of different projects. You can get your gelcoat, fiberglass and laminating resin from TotalBoat at www.jamestowndistributors.com.

Why use epoxy primer and not a spray can primer?

Guessing it’s a solvent issue. Lots of stuff will dissolve that foam... epoxy won’t. Plus it’s bullet proof.
