Sabaton don't take sides, they simply tell war stories. They've told stories about Nazis, Russians, Americans and every nation in between, a whole album on Sweden's Era of Great Power 1611-1721, The Final Solution, Hitler, Lawrence of Arabia, The Fall of Berlin etc etc. Keep exploring, you'll find out.

Under Gen. Erwin Rommel - 1940 advance through the Ardennes which the French thought was impassable. Rommel is known for his Afrika Korps but he should be known for his WW1 victories which had very few casualties on BOTH sides. Ghost Division was also blamed for several massacres of POW's in France and then the Soviet Union (when Rommel was not present although he preferred to lead at the front).

  • @bacaps3rgaming631
    @bacaps3rgaming631 Před 4 lety +353

The "Ghost Division" was a German panzer division (under command of Erwin Rommel) which participated in the invasion of France (where they got their nickname). Panzers (german for tanks) were usually known as ridiculously fast units and the infantry couldn't keep up with them at all unless they had some mechanized units. And this particular division was notorious for disappearing before an advance and reappearing miles in enemy territory after a while (most notably 200 miles in one day). Neither the German command nor the French knew where it was at any point in time as long as they were advancing. That is why the French gave them the nickname "Division fantôme" --- (literal translation from french - Ghost division)

Sabaton is basically a history lesson in each and every song. Check out Bismark/Fields of Verdun/Seven Pillars of Wisdom/Attack of the Dead Men for some dope music videos. That said, you will learn something historic from every one of their songs. Much love!

Also, Sabaton is a Swedish power metal band. They're famous for the quality and themes of their songs, as well as taking a more objective look at the material. There are songs like Primo Victoria which is about the D-Day invasion in Normandy and features the line "Through the gates of hell as we make our way to heaven through the Nazi lines! Primo Victoria![First Victory]" and Bismarck about the German battleship. Sabaton keeps the focus of their lyrics on people and battles, instead of the politics and belief systems.

Yes, they did open with Ghost Division during their 2022 North American tour. Lots of people took videos of these shows. Actually, the show opened with a short film about the Dough Boys, Americans who went to Europe to fight in WW1. This was an incredible experience, to watch old time films of the Dough Boys, from every race and walk of life, going to Europe to fight. When the narrator says that the Dough Boys "American resolve had ended the war," the audience was all clapping, at the same time that the old news reels on the screen showed Americans from 1918 (?) cheering the end of the war. We were cheering at the same time as people long dead, but both cheering the same thing. Americans did something right, helped people. Actually, for a moment, we could feel proud of US and what these guys accomplished. It ended with a call for a national monument in DC for the Dough Boys. THEN there was a pounding and flashing around the tank, and Ghost Division started. It was quite exciting! Also, the covid restrictions had been lifted. We all were just thrilled to be at a concert again.

A little info for you. Many have said they dont take sides but if you want to learn about their songs and the history behind their songs they have an entire CZcams channel "Sabaton History" Where they talk about the history.
A personal favorite song by them is a ballad, Ballad of Bull, its about a conscientious objector in WW2, Leslie "Bull" Alan who was a medic and refused to carry a rifle. The unit he was assigned to had to climb a steep cliff. Upon that cliff they were met with extreme resistance. Bull was the only one who defied the orders to retreat, he went up the cliff to recover the wounded. He carried them and improvised a way to hoist them down the cliff face. His actions saved the lives of 12 warriors that day. The enemy was known for shooting at medics with the big red cross, he was a marked man on top of that cliff. He was defenseless without a rifle, or grenades and yet he advanced upon the enemy to recover his brothers in arms.
In the end Sabaton sings about stories from war both the good and the bad parts, newer and old history. You guys are American and theres a ton of songs like "Lost Battalion" A WW1 song about a battalion trapped behind the enemy lines for months, "The Price of a Mile" a song about Audie Murphy Americans most decorated soldier IIRC, "No bullets fly" A song about a heavily damaged american B17 bomber escorted out of the fight by a German pilot who risked execution for his actions if he was caught, he escorted them out and over German AA guns flying close enough that German ground crews wouldnt shoot. "Devil Dogs" was a song about the USMC earning their nickname in WW1.
They even talk about the relatively unknown parts of history like in WW2 when Brazil sent troops who became known as "Smoking Snakes" to fight in Italy of the thousands deployed they lost 3 to the Germans, They found their bodies buried with full military honors and crosses inscribed in German were the words "Here lie 3 Brazilian heros" As the story goes their section was on patrol came upon a German Wehrmacht, not nazi but regular German soldiers, emplacement. They ambushed the position. Sending half of their team back to get reinforcements. They ran out of ammo, fixed bayoneted and charged the German position, the 3 of them fought to the last breath and fought with such ferocity that they earned the respect of the Germans. Because of their actions they were given that full honors burial and crosses.
I highly recommend doing some more of their songs, youll learn a lot about history. Only metal band ever honored by the church to the point a bishop in Poland bowed and presented a gift to them live during a concert. Brazil uses their Smoking Snakes song as a marching song. They dont shy away from the dark parts of history or the light parts and they embrace the history.

I'm not normally one to comment on videos, but had to bring some info in on this video. I watched it as i love seeing reaction video from those that don't normally listen to metal reviewing metal bands, always find their take on their music interesting.
RIght with Sabaton, they're a Swedish Power Metal band. Their entire theme surrounding the band is they write songs based on history, more specifically Military history, covering many, many different conflicts through out mankinds history and cover all sides of the the various conflicts. In regards to their music, it's not them glorifying war, but more giving a history lesson on the different wars and conflicts that have happened over the history of this world and telling the stories of the different sides that partook in it.
I must stress that they are in no way at all Nazi sympathisers. They have done many songs surrounding the second world war, covering the british, the germans, the americans, the russians and other different nations too. But what each song is designed to do is teach a specific part of the conflict. For example with this video, they wanted to tell the story of the German Tank Devision, known as the Ghost Devision, which was part of the Germany Blitzkrieg across Europe. They are not condoning their actions, but more showing what happened in a song format. This is not fake or movie footage, but real life documented videos taken during the war, as Sabaton often use in a lot of their songs as it gives you a realisation that all of this is real and shows the brutality of war and what veterans went through, from all sides. Anyway that's explaining the Sabaton side of this.
I do want to mention the historical side and say that yes these were Nazi soldiers, but do understand that while they were on the german side, don't forget the human element to this. These were men that were forced to go to war for their country, much like with the British and American men. At that time in history, as soon as you turned 18, you were thrown into the military and forced to fight. There was no choice back then as there is now. If you refused to fight for your country, you would either be imprisoned or executed and that was on both sides of the conflict. The german soldiers had to fight and were doing there part for their country, much like soldiers on our side. I say that because they were doing their part and not to confuse them with the full blown evil of Nazi Germany which were Hitler, his high ranking generals, the SS and the Gestapo. They were the real, pure evil of the German people at that time, not the average soldier. A lot of German soldiers heavily regretting what they had to do during those years and the German people to this day still feel remorse for the events that happened during this war. While it is easy to lump all of the German people in with the real evil of the Nazi, i say please don't tarnish them all with the same brush as they were manipulated and mislead into a war by Hitler, who was a power hungry, ruthless individual who took advantage of the fact that after the 1st world war, Germany and it's people were in a terrible place, suffering, starving, many out of work, many people dying and left with no hope for a future. (I often look at how America is now and compare it to how Germany was then and how easy it was for the worst people to worm their way to power and use it to meet their own ends - but i won't get political here) Anyway Hitler gave the german people hope and mislead them into a devastating war with the promise of grandure and respect. Anyway, i've rambled on, i just wanted to stress not to completely vilify the average German person or Soldier as they were just doing what they were told to do and doing their part to be patriotic to their country, much like our side had to.
Also side note - a Sabaton is the metal foot covering that Knights used to wear, when in their full suit of Armor. It was to protect their feet and part of the full suit. Incidently if you see the bands logo, the S in Sabaton features a Sabaton from a suit of armor as part of the design of the S.
Excuse the long comment - just wanted to say my piece in regards to this video and honestly do recommend looking up Sabaton, they're a great band, one that actually teaches you something and put on an increble live show - check their live videos of their concerts or from the festivals to see this.

Sabaton tells stories from any time from any perspective. They don’t use their personal preference or beliefs to write songs. Just legendary stories from all times and all sides.

you liked the headphones of the german tankers. Then you should also see the microphones which was like 100 years ahead of every other army.
