- Agent Dominique gets is shown a hidden side to the Chinese ambassador who is also the secret overlord of the Dark Army, Whiterose, when her team of FBI agents are invited to China.

Elliot writes the FBI hack malware from Ray's computer. Darlene tells Angela that they can wipe the FBI's records connecting her to the Allsafe CD if she helps, but she declines. The parking attendant who found Tyrell's SUV fears that the FBI is onto him, so Joanna orders him killed. Elliot tells Ray that he must communicate with his previous IT specialist, "RT"; Ray reluctantly agrees and brings RT over. Dominique and her team travel to China to investigate the Dark Army's involvement in Five/Nine. There, they meet Minister Zhang, the Chinese Minister of State Security, who is actually Whiterose. After Dominique and Zhang have a private conversation in the evening, gunmen attack the office the following morning, killing most of Dominique's team. Joanna gets a phone call from someone breathing heavily, possibly Tyrell. After her ex-boyfriend Ollie sells her out to the FBI, Angela decides to aid with the hack. Elliot asks RT what happened to him and RT reveals that Ray runs a black market website trafficking drugs, weapons, and sex slaves. That night, thugs break into Elliot's house, drag him into the street, and beat him while Ray reminds him that he was warned not to look.

BD Wong does not get the recognition he deserves. His performance as Whiterose is one of the best I've seen in television and it's shocking that he did not win the Emmy. In a show with so many great performances he somehow steals the show with every scene he is in. Absolutely incredible.

It's interesting cause in Chinese culture, sending clocks is a no-no as it's as if you're wishing someone's death. It's unsettling to see a room full of clocks cause it symbolises being surrounded by death. Very nice touch.

It makes sense since Whiterose/Zhang is also obsessed with death, i.e. killing everyone to make a new better world.
Clocks by themselves don't carry any telltale of bad luck. It's just the Chinese avoids giving them out so that no pun will be triggered.
BTW watches don't carry such burdens so you're welcome to give Chinese people watches as gifts. In fact, in recent Chinese pop culture among the young, watches are a coveted gift option as they now stand for longevity and health. The origin of this phenomenon is a story for another day.

Man rewatching that all of those awkward silences from Wong really communicates that he intends for Dom to die with these personal secrets very soon.
i think he genuinely wanted to share a piece of himself, that he felt she would understand. in the end he still wants to connect to the world but at the same time change it to be a better one. taking off the mask to let someone peek behind it to see for himself that he too is still human and not above it all. he did infact care about people but because of what he tried to accomplish the ends jutified his means because the means would undo the ends
That was very good. The acting, the dialogue, the silence, the tension - you felt she was vulnerable.
The parallels between these two are incredible.
Yes ive just noticed. White rose chose the same thing as dom. Them being trans in china was probably a traumatic experience. Their power was taken away from them, and they want it back. so they went on a mission of climbing up the social lader to gain power and that quickly became addicting. So in summary they became equally disgusted by power and fascinated by it. To the point where they chose the field that fits that paradox over their loved one.

I love how this show plants the seed that the clock is actually Dom's. White Rose tried to play the same trick on Elliot in the final season but Elliot saw straight through it.

Whiterose allowed herself to be seen by Dom, just a little. She was curious and wanted to know if she could push the right buttons on this fascinating FBI agent.
The problem is that Dom is too skeptical. She's a woman with a strong moral compass. I don't think she would ever be at Whiterose's side.
One of my favorite scenes from the show. I see myself coming back here every now and then.
One thing that came to mind while I was re-watching this scene the other day: Was this conversation the reason that Dom got away from the shooting the next day? Was it Whiterose's orders not to kill her or pure luck?

Sometimes I forget how much of a masterpiece this series is.
He is an incredible actor. Watching the show again and understanding, increases my admiration for his acting 5 times.
I actually installed in interval timer and put one on my phone after watching white roses fixation with time a couple of years ago. For some reason it just hit me at the right time in the right place. He referenced macbeth in this scene. Can't argue with that. Life is way to short. The older i've gotten the more sensitive i've become to using my time wisely.

It is the ONLY show I ever watched more than 2 times. It is not only the attention to detail and foreshadowing that makes it worth repeated views. Almost every scene is, beyond it's mere function of advancing the story, enjoyable in itself.

one of my favorite scenes. my theory is whiterose was trying to recruit dom here, asking about her personal life and her past. she kinda revealed herself a little bit, talking about parallel universes and living a different life. she was probably trying to gauge dom's reaction. whiterose is powerful but at the same time feels trapped in this world where she cannot be her true self (a trans woman) and has to disguise herself as a man in order to wield so much power and influence in a conservative culture

i know whiterose was responsible for deaths of so many people but part of me wanted her machine to work which wouldn't fit the narrative and message of the show but still i wanted her to find some peace :(
@@kdt110 no it didn't work. In the episode 'eXit' Elliot installed the malware so it stopped the machine from working. I know Whiterose says she already turned on the machine but Elliot's malware still worked and he also stopped the nuclear meltdown by playing the 'eXit' game on that old computer

Creating a Alternative reality that satisfies everyone. Hence the last episodes where Elliot sees true self who did not know any hacking stuff so he created him (our hoodie elliot) in simple terms everyone in the world that our Elliot has being seeing is a FAKE Reality all the characters we have seen so far are images created by Elliot (Real Elliot). Including whiterose. SO whiterose is living himself/herself in a parralel world where society SUCKS. So he wants a way out into reality thats why he created his machine and when he died he left his choice to elliot to go back to reality thats why MR Robot was stopping him!

The machine could've worked ( bringing everyone in a parallel world where everything is a paradise bla bla bla ) but it was deactivated after The Mastermind played the eXit game. The world where the original Elliot Alderson is trapped was created by the Mastermind for keeping him occupied while he was changing his past and take control of him, period.

It's baffling to me how someone as intelligent and well planned as Zhang would give a lame lie like they're his sisters. Dom would be aware that he doesn't have a sister. He could've just said he likes to collect the clothes.
Pretty sure the whole point of that was to show his vulnerability. He wasn't on guard. He wasn't being intelligent. He was just in the moment.
She was supposed to die next morning so he wouldn't really care

@@breezy_basil obviously white rose doesn't have a time machine. It's insinuated that she uses big data to collect information on people and then used this information to recreate their childhood. She placed a bunch of items that were important to Angela's childhood in that room and used it to manipulate her into believing that parallel dimensions exist. She tries to do the same thing to Dom. The clock was part of her childhood and was meant to trigger some type of confusion or curiosity but Dom was too skeptical
Just had a theory - Whiterose calls the dresses his Sisters, even tho they're Whiteroses. What if Whiterose grew up just like Elliott - abused in some sort of way, so the Sister/Whiterose manifested and his identity he wanted to be, as Whiterose was his safety blanket as Mr Robot was to Elliott

@@Herv3 maybe. It never crossed my mind, which I think is a compliment to the show. I was so wrapped up in Whiteroses project and the aura of the Villain role it brings, that i never stopped to make the connection to Whiterose and Mr Robot

That was quite the scene. One of the most intriguing characters in the same scene with one of the most least interesting characters of the show. Totally wrong casting decision for Dom character. She actually took away rather than added with her performance. Unless boring is what they were shooting for which may have been the case. Even her "secret" was cliche and added nothing to the story.

I find the writing for this series to be terribly forced and artificial. It’s like a bad James Bond movie with BD Wong playing Blofeld.
I can understand that, but I think that’s the point. Remember who Zhang really is. This is him putting on a show of sorts for Dom to avoid suspicion, so I think it makes sense that his dialogue would sound “Forced and artificial” because it’s just a veneer he’s projecting to avoid suspicion.

I can understand why you say that, but given how clearly uncomfortable she is having been pulled aside by the Minister of China, of all people, I think her “Cliche” lines are fitting because it shows how uncomfortable and “Fish out of water” she is, which given the larger context of the scene, I would call appropriate.
