Its crazy how many interpretations you can get from simple hints throughout Mr Robot's run. Its time to talk about the time travel theory, and maybe the parallel universe theory, and see whats up.

A little tangent in regards to the manipulation technique white rose uses against her subjects. My theory is they use the same technique hackers use to scan for open ports with network mapping...
White rose begins by creating a sense of urgency in the subject. If Angela doesn't answer the questions in a timely manner, the fish dies and the young girl claims she will be beaten if Angela doesn't answer the questions correctly. Then they ask a series of deeply personal questions. White rose already knows the answer to these because she's hacked Angela and obtained access to her deepest darkest secrets. Due to the sense of urgency, Angela feels pressure to answer the questions as quickly as possible.
You'll notice whenever the subject lies, they repeat the question over and over until they answer correctly. When they answer incorrectly, they are able to identify an insecurity; a vulnerability - an open port, and when they finally answer truthfully white rose gains access to that port and exposes a vulnerability. From there, white rose can exploit those vulterabilities, gain access to Angela's 'network' and reconfigure it from inside. This is how she brainwashes her subjects.
It doesn't work on Elliot, because he knows every trick in the book, infact Elliot is two steps ahead of white rose, he exposes who she is. Just a nasty old woman filled with resent who wants to destroy humanity and get back at the world for doing wrong by her (Much like the CCP, but that's another can of worms)...
Also, I love how they constantly play with the idea that the human brain is no different than a computer network. It has vulterabilities which can be exploted, hacked, and controlled from inside.
    This show is perfect.

Honestly I wouldn't describe whiterose like that at all. I think she genuinely and wholeheartedly believed her machine would work and everyone that died was irrelevant because they would be restored once they merge with the parallel universe/ went back in time anyway. She was even more delusional than Elliot, then again, he stopped the machine. So who knows? If he hadn't, maybe it would've worked 🤷

    • @catatafish22
      @catatafish22 Před rokem

@@Masterofchodes I think that too, but it doesn't take away from the fact that she used hardcore manipulation tactics to brainwash people.
According to the lore, there may be a good chance she had a supernatural fix... but we'll never know I guess. That's what I love about the show.
My thing was more just in terms of netsec, how she would view her subjects like machines with vulnerabilities (Just like Elliot did.. his method was just a bit more rogue while White rose was methodical)... and the whole show was about how hacking into networks and finding vulterabilities is not a whole lot different from digging into someones subconcious and finding vulnerabilities. Computers and networks are modeled after the human brain and how humans interact with each other, so I thought how Sam Esmail played on that analogy was really cool.
Her and Elliot are definitely one in the same in that regard. For the audience, it creates so much cognitive dissonance - because you're rooting for Elliot, but you keep finding out more and more how he's barely any different from the people he's fighting against.
In the end, he just won... Good and Evil was almost redundant at that stage.
The concept of Good vs Evil is very Nietzchean too... have a look at this summary of 'beyond good and evil' if you've got the time. czcams.com/video/WIHXZUltfqk/video.html
Esmail explores this concept a lot... the line between good and evil is blurred, and Nietzche proposed that that line does not even exist. We're all just somewhere in the middle. No person, or no act is purely good or purely evil... its like a concept of 'grey thinking' (AKA not black and white).

Whiterose said to Elliot in season one, “You hack people, I hack time.” And I take her word for it. I think time travel is plausible. It makes sense. She wanted to go back in time prior to her lover committing suicide so that she could change the consequence and be with him again.

Yeah, but keep in mind that the idea behind hacking is for both Elliot and for Whiterose to gain control over something. Read ‚hack‘ as ‚can control‘. Elliot finally needed this control in order to transcend his trauma, which he did, and in comparison to Whiterose he accomplished going past the past. But Whiterose is stuck in a ‚psychotic denial of reality‘ (Price), which extends itself into every matter of her actions. She is ready to go beyond every line to make sure that her pain, or rather, the way she copes with her split identity isn‘t discovered or exposed to vuleranbility. Even if there are others suffering because of her delusional fantasy, she clings to this pseudo system of knowledge and change. Whiterose vs. Elliot is such a great exploration of belief vs. logic, idealism vs. Truth. And Elliot carries truth on his back through the entire show. Even though he is motivated by hatred, and not by philanthropy, as he also very much hurts people for his deeds, he does it honestly and with love & preserverance. I can‘t fathom how deep Whtreose‘s wound can be, but it seems pretty rough, if she has to go to those lengths of creating a cultish group that is truly fanatic about the doctrine that one is able to deny one‘s pain and live in a world without it. It stems from such an innocent and good-seeming place, that it‘s so fascinating how truly malevolent it becomes. Especially as that is portrayed in the show.

Whiterose machine is a particle accelerator.
This might be a bit deep, but the expression “art imitates life” and its mirror “life imitates art“ are subtle hints which elude to the fact that movies are inspired by real life and real life is reflected in movies.
Accelerating and colliding particles at near the speed of light in order to understand the nature of the subatomic particles of which space and time itself are comprised, but only exist for a fraction of a fraction of a millisecond is useless information and a completely pointless waste of immense time & resources, unless you have the capability of using that knowledge
Which brings us back to the beginning Whiterose machine is a particle accelerator. The “art to life” reflection between whiterose machine and CERN is pretty obvious… Throughout the series we learn that White Rose is using her machine to change the world, and the world changes accordingly.
CERN is smashing particles together at near the speed of light and our world is changing accordingly.

Tyrell’s death shows that he ultimately allowed his obsession with godhood to consume him, something that Elliot nearly allows to happen to him at the end of the show. In other words, Tyrell serves as a dark, foreboding warning of what Elliot could become if he’s not careful. Though, I can absolutely understand why Tyrell’s death bothers you nonetheless.

The truth about white roses project is that there is no definitive answer for what it is, it could be a time machine, a gateway to alternate universes, or any number of things. But the truth is it has no definitive answer because it is what in narrative terms is called a “Macguffin”, an undefined or unexplained object or idea that’s sheer purpose is to move the plot forward.
The show never truly focuses on what the machine truly is, because that would break the suspense/mystery a draw attention away from what the show truly is: a realistic semi realistic show about hacking and the dissociative identity disorder of Elliot. The machine is never defined because what it COULD DO isn’t important, only what it is causing is integral to the show.

The blackouts in season 2 were due to White Rose’s use of the machine. Every time something went wrong that threatened her project she went back and corrected it. This was how she pulled off stage 2 in spite of Elliot’s attempts to derail it. This was how she got around Angela turning over the documents to the nuclear regulatory commission. This is how she brought young Angela to interrogate herself in order to help convince her to stop trying to threaten the plant. The hamburger guy in the radiation suit and the blackouts were all components of time travel (or parallel universe jumping) interventions.

Sam is the final personality and it will turn into a "Twin Peaks" meta where the character in the show realizes his reality is a tv show. That's why Elliott talks to us.
Elliott has died a lot already and Sam has written himself into the show to save Elliott. I think the first season is actually the end of the time loop and the 5 9 hack is what stops the machine AKA the TV SHOW plot because after that we see Elliott's character living the normal life where its all good but that was before we knew multiple realities were already created. So when Elliott stops talking to us, which is Sam, as a creator of the show, showing us a whole new reality where what would happen if the hack didn't work. Which is stated by Whiterose in episode exit.
We already have seen how it ends, we haven't seen how it started.

MY THEORY: is that the third personality is "Sam". Sam has several times deleted elliot's memories so he can control him. Reinstalled him with a new drive routine, destroy the elite for some shit (perhaps so he can steal white roses machine?). The "hello friend" thing is elliot talking to sam, the silent observer, but he doesn't know it yet. We have several times during the show seen the actual "Sam esmail observe Elliott. Sam seems to be able to block mr robots awareness of him as well. When elliot is upset in season 1 after finding out something he should have known he asks "us" if we knew about it, if we were in on it. When he gets home he looks in the mirror, and we see flashes of the other characters of the show, Darlene, Tyrell, mr robot and Angela.. AAAAANNND we actually see Sam esmails face in the fucking mirror.
When elliot "fell" from the window, his "dad" and his "mom" run outside to find him. All worried. There we actually hear his "dad" scream SAM!! I thought it was son the whole time, but it's actually sam. So now I don't believe it's even his parents running out. By now we clearly know elliot's mom doesn't give a shit about him and never did, in the hospital she's more worried about the cost of the bills than elliot's health. So the one running out to save elliot is actually mr.robot and his imaginary mother. But they're actually more worried about sam. Their real boss and perhaps even their creator. In season 4 we see the actual Sam Esmail inject something into elliot when he gets caught in the honeypot. Then we actually see elliot having flashbacks from season 1.. including something on a fucking computer screen. I believe what we are actually seeing is sam about remove all of elliot's memories and reinstall his drive routines. But he noticed that they were caught by mr. Price so he aborts it.

Leukemia in the plant employees could be the side effect of early and imperfect brain downloads. Such brain content could then be uploaded to new people/personas, or machines. It would explain why Whiterose keeps insists that people aren’t dead or don’t have to be gone. It would also make sense that a project like this would be motivated by losing her partner, and wanting to prevent that in the world.

Angela and Tyrell are top contenders besides Elliot, of course. And that hamburger guy sure seems to get around doesn't he? Elliot's 3rd alt (3rd? 4th? what are we up to now?) might he a Biff Tannen character, someone who uses information from the future to change the past somehow and our Elliot intends to correct things but lost his memory somewhere along the way 12 Monkeys style. That would, in fact, mean he and White Rose are on the same side as she says. That epic meeting between White Rose and Angela has been messing with me for the longest. Because it appears to take place in the past, with a past version of herself. The questions might be meant to verify which Angela she is or to get information that would allow another Angela to take her place which is likely what happened.

I just found your channel and I dig it. I feel the next few episodes will address these issues:
White Rose and Elliot are going to finally talk about WR's machine in this episode and "correcting the past" through its use. This meeting may finally detail what happened during Elliott's three missing days around the 5/9 attack and the missing time when Darlene ran into Vera. The third alter could take over the discussion with WR, and the audience may see the personality switch happen.
The machine is a particle collider, which based on String Theory, may create alternate realities apart from the world we see on the show. To me, this is a metaphor for Elliott's alters functioning within his mind without detection from other people besides Darlene and Angela (who have direct knowledge of his mental illness).
Elliot returns to the plant where his father and Angela's mother were poisoned by the cancer causing gas. I thought the plant was shut down and abandoned, but apparently it was not after the accidental gas leak, it just could not be inspected. WR's machine is still there after all this time, and seems to be working presently.
Angela said, "I (she) saw it", before she died. Philip Price ordered Elliot to, "Destroy it", before he died. So, if Elliot destroys the machine, will he also symbolically destroy Mr. Robot and the third alter? If that is the case, it may allow his mind to accept the reality of what has happened in his world as a result of his actions since October 31, 2014 until December 26, 2015?
He may also finally accept everything that happened on the fateful day when he was pushed or jumped out of the window as a juvenile. I feel the missing time is related to something else from that day, which may be revealed due to the meeting with White Rose. Confronting WR may allow Elliot to confront all the things about himself that his mind has tried to protect him from.

Elliot is Mr Details, as I recall he even knows that Krista's into anal but he could give a fuck about even basic info about WR's change reality machine? This all makes zero sense. Unless the third personality is down and deep with WR and her machine and no one knows it except him. To say they just dont know about it, is garbage. @margaretmccall7726 Před 4 lety +2

@@armandocorpus9211 I have to believe a large part of everyone outside of Elliot/Mr Robot/Price/WR not knowing anything has to do with what a particle collider consists of. Most people never think of this until some kind of spill happens. Consider this:
      1. It is powered by nuclear energy, which is strictly controlled by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Energy Department, and it's whereabouts is supposed to always be accounted for. Remember, Angela tried to blow the whistle about the spill/plant/machine to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Season 2, but was intercepted by WR and the Dark Army.
      2. Most people have no idea of what the machine and spill means, so try to relate it to the Three Mile Island nuclear plant incident from 1979 (which nearly melted down) and Homer Simpson's work habits at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. (Dooh!!😂😂Homer's bad work habits is how mistakes can happen, but I digressed 😂).
3.This is a physical danger to the public and a legal matter for the two agencies. The FBI or Home Land Security would only get involved if for some reason, the nuclear energy was reported missing (think about the bomb in Syriana the movie); there is a spill of some type (think of the EPA and Love Canal, NY); there is a possible terrorist threat on their radar (Boston Marathon bombing); or a few other situations that come to mind. The general public would not be notified and all the agencies would keep it top secret as a way to thwart other bad actors. Think of it like the movie Silkwood, which was about Karen Silkwood who died after possible deliberate exposure to radiation at a nuclear facility.
      4. The size of a collider is massive, so it cannot be moved easily. Thus, once it was started in the early 1990s, it would not have been moved from the plant without being inspected before being decommissioned to be moved somewhere else. This is why the refusal of inspection was, so important to White Rose. She continued to work on the machine despite the plant having released the cancer causing gas, which is totally illegal. This is also why no one thought of it because it was out of sight and out of mind. A collider is usually underground and stretched over a few miles in order to operate.
      5. I assumed the plant was closed after the accident. Evidently it was not, or it was made to look as if it was no longer working on the machine. The family members were tied up in a class action lawsuit against E Corp for the deaths of the 24 employees that was first decided against them when Darlene was 4 or 5, which is how she knew of the lawyer she killed after taking over her house for FSociety. The law suit was then resurrected when Colby and E Corp was taken down by FSociety in 2015 because Angela pressed Philip Price to get her the inside information about the case.
      6. Just moving the collider from state to state takes a lot of preparation and agreement between the states. Moving it to another country will call for international approvals and other stipulations. Pressumably, a country like the Congo would have fewer restrictions and controls than a country like France or Italy. WR would direct everything regarding the machine because the Congo officials would not scrutinize her or the machine prior to its use.
      7. WR kept the machine a secret just like she kept her real identity as a trans woman secret and masqueraded in public as Minister Zhing. She kept her affair with her dead lover secret even after his death. She kept her acceptance of her promotion to the technology czar position secret from her lover after promising him they would leave China and move to America. She kept her creation of the Dark Army secret from the Chinese government. She kept her involvement with the Deus Group secret, so she was to kept the machine secret while she completed it. Price knew about it because of the spill at the plant and Angela's mother's death. He made sure the mortgage on the property was paid and prevented the inspections, so WR had to let him know about the machine against her will, which began her resentment for Philip.
Having said all THAT, I feel those reasons are the reasons why Mr. Robot/Elliot/3rd personality decided to put their plan in effect to take down E Corp around November 2014. Edward Alderson aka Mr Robot had worked on the initial stages of the machine, so his persona would know that the machine was near completion and about to be implemented based upon WR's original time tables. Mr Robot is Elliott's idealized version of his abusive father, Edward Alderson, but despite the abuse, I feel he still loved(s) his father.
With that said, the Elliot who speaks to us would try to avenge his father's death due to the E Corp spill. He could not do it as the helpless juvenile we see in flashbacks, but he can do it now as a grown adult. Mr Robot aka Edward Alderson was angry at the time of his death due to the leak at the plant, and would like to get revenge against the company whose practices led to his death. Thus, this angry persona pops up in Elliott's mind to ensure he helps Elliot our narrator eventually seek revenge against E Corp and simultaneously absolve himself of his past abuses.
The 3rd persona is cunning and necessary to lure unsuspecting people into trusting Elliot, and then turning the tables on them once he gains their trust through social engineering. He had to lie in wait many years to get even with everyone who caused juvenile Elliott's, Darlene's, and Angela's pain and injustice. I feel Elliot the narrator retreated within his own mind after the window incident, but the 3rd personality woke up and took note of everyone and everything that was going on in relationship to juvenile Elliot (himself) and Edward Alderson's death.
Philip Price secretly kept an eye on Angela her entire life. I feel after the families sued E Corp, WR kept an eye on all the family members that sued to always counter their attempts to inspect the plant. This surveillance is how WR and Price had knowledge of Elliott's mental issues. Likewise, the 3rd personality used his own counter surveillance to stalk WR and the other E Corp officials. When he was ready to exact his revenge, he tapped into Mr Robot's technical knowledge about the machine and Elliott's hacking skills without either of them knowing it.
WR used Angela's hope to see her mother again against her, and as a way to control Angela. But, we know this ended badly for Angela because she did not understand who the Dark Army or WR was. She wanted revenge against E Corp for her mother's death, gave up her control when she joined WR after getting caught at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and assisted the stage 2 attack.
As I stated, Darlene killed the lawyer who laughed in court when the verdict against the families was announced. So, she got her personal revenge against E Corp for her father's death. Darlene and Mr. Robot pulled off the 5/9 attack and she just redistributed the money from the Deus group, so Edward Alderson aka Mr Robot got his revenge for his death at E Corp's hand.
The 3rd personality is where all of this gets tricky. Elliot the narrator does not wish to kill anyone or let someone die because of his actions like Vera killed Shayla. I feel the 3rd personality does not care about any collateral losses of life as long as he gets revenge and avenges the harm done to juvenile Elliot by Edward Alderson (the real parent) and E Corp whose leak caused Edward's and Mrs. Moss's deaths.
Narrator Elliot called off the original attack on Steele Mountain when he realized innocent people would die if they blew up the nearby utility plant. Narrator Elliot kept disrupting Stage 2 because he knew innocent people may die if it succeeded. We know how Tyrell, Mr Robot, and narrator Elliot fought about carrying out Stage 2 because narrator Elliot's conscious would not let it happen even when he was sleep. I feel the fights at the Red Wheel Barrel was the 3rd personality saying in the background he did not care if anyone else died because he wanted his revenge against E Corp at any cost. Mr. Robot was agreeable to stage 2, but seemed ambivalent to the deaths as long as he got what he wanted.
Angela went along with the stage 2 plan because she believed in WR's machine and thought she could fix any collateral damages with it if their plan was successful. We know what happened to her after she realized she could not reverse time as if Stage 2 never happened. Now, narrator/3rd personality Elliot have to destroy the machine like WR destroyed Angela, the love of their life in order to get revenge and avenge her death. Thus, when the machine and WR are destroyed, there should no longer be a need for Mr Robot or the 3rd personality as tools to implement revenge against E Corp. If it all happens, narrator Elliot and juvenile Elliot could reconcile their life and the consequences of their actions since the window incident.

another clue that you could add to your theory is that s04e06 you can see white rose being interrupted by her "assistant" in front of a whiteboard. The inscriptions on that board sure looks like quantum physics, so it relates with the VLHC. At least you can "add" that to the series of clues the show gives.

FFS: came here trying to find out about what Whiterose's plan was, and don't realise until the end that this was released before all the episodes were released.
    **SPOILERS BELOW**
Pretty sure the machine was just a McGuffin. They leave hints about the sort of thing the machine could be, but it's never confirmed. I like this theory. It makes sense. However, the thing that's pissing me off about Mr Robot's ending is that everything with Whiterose and her plan was meaningless in the end. It had no bearing on the story. The machine could solve world hunger, or be a big bomb, and it would change nothing. Everything about Whiterose's character, Angela's arc: all meaningless. Genuinely very frustrating. And as interesting as the finale was, at the end of the day, I don't think they expected that to be the conclusion from when they started the show. I'm not necessarily berating the creators, but after a twist like S4E7, this ending to the show didn't feel satisfying to me. At the end of the day: 5.9 was pointless; the cyber bombings weren't resolved like the show implied with Angela and Whiterose; the cyber bombings didn't really develop Elliot/Mastermind's character since it resulted in guilt before reverting to vengeance; it's unclear why Mr Robot would always be treating Mastermind like the real Elliot if he knew; and the show implies Tyrell found something but I guess he just died and his character ended up being kinda pointless. I really enjoyed the show, but in many ways it would have been better without the last 3 episodes and if they left it with a vague ending, or reveal who the real Elliot is and just end it there.
If Whiterose was just someone hungry for power with a deluded idea of their motivation, that would be okay. It would be good if Angela had just been tricked, and Whiterose's project collapsed from lack of funding and was left vague, as that would clearly imply it was a selfish plan. However, by having Whiterose behave as she did in the final episodes, and with Elliot trying to uncover the mysteries of the machine and that game, the show is telling us it wasn't simply a selfish endeavour on the part of Whiterose. But then they do nothing with it! Not sure if anyone feels the same way, but for a great show, it sure had a very frustrating and underwhelming ending.

One of the coolest things about this show is that Esmail had the entire story line since before season 1 started, so whats happening know and what happened in S1 is a perfect continuation of events that can be traced back from previews seasons, unlike some other shows that scramble to tie thing up when they determine that the shows needs to end (cough got) before the story is complete.

I have to say it BEFORE the last three episodes air, I believe there are three possible choices for the 3rd personality:
    1. Sam Sepiol who facilitated FSociety taking over Steele Mountain in season one. Elliot uses that name as his handle when he hacks. I feel this is the strongest likelihood, and we may find out Elliot Alderson is Sam Sepiol's alter who Sam created after the window incident while Edward Alderson was dying.
    2. Edward Alderson may be the third personality as himself the real life abusive father who was poisoned at the plant. This is NOT Mr Robot, who is Elliott's idealized version of his father. This is the actual deceased father's persona WHO junevile Elliot is still trying to please by getting revenge against E Corp and anyone else he feels contributed to his death.
    3. Kevin McAllister the snow man Darlene and Elliot made as kids. I feel this is the weakest possibility, and is the McGuffin in the plot. The snowman may have been the first "friend" Elliot told about his abuse. Eventually, he may have felt the need to escape by expressing himself through the snowman, Kevin McAllister, which led to the other alters.
I believe Sam Sepiol is the 3rd personality. Elliot is one of Sam's alters. Sam retreated into Elliot as a way to control his own anger and bad impulses. Darlene and Angela knew this, which allowed them to seamlessly relate to all four personalities at will (juvenile Elliot, narrator Elliot, Mr Robot, and Sam). Thoughts?

Assuming that the trips between universes are pure science fiction and given the paradoxes that they would entail, and discarding them, i suggest that Witherose's machine was trying to reboot the universe, detonating a collision of adrones and triggering a new big bang, It is the reason why in his philosophy of life there was no fear to death, in the end the ultimate path led us all to it.

Great analysis. Yeah, it's too soon to call. But all this theory is what makes this show so good. Soon, the show will reveal itself...or will it. I hope it isn't a major cop out to interpretation. Anything can happen. The discussion and possibilites/theories made this show so much better as a viewer. I don't think we will get the ending we want because we had so many great outs from the public. But even a quote from this very video has...it's the journey. ARG's are amazing.

You. Called. It. The room Elliot and Angela went to with Whiterose functions like the box from Primer. The radiation poisoning that Edward and Angela's mom went through was because of their use of the machine. The 21 workers and the coverup were part of Whiterose using the machine to show the parents of important characters the alternate reality she was working towards. Really excited to see how this ends
