How to Powdercoat a YETI in Two Colors the Easy Way
Vložit
- čas přidán 28. 06. 2016
- This is an easy way to apply two colors of powdercoating to a tumbler whether it's a YETI, RTIC, OZARK TRAIL, TWIN PEAKS, or a RecPro as I actually used in this video. I have done several methods to achieve this same outcome and have to say not only do I look this method the best, the outcome is consistent.

You have inspired me to do powdercoating. I've set up my basement in a small room with my equipment. Thank you for your helpful tips and short cuts to setting up properly. Powdercoat On!
imbond7 thanks for the comment. Good luck and look forward to seeing how you do.
Inspired alot of us...
Dustin Alexander thanks
I'm glad I ran across your channel. I've been trying to figure out how to put designs on Yeti type mugs and tumblers without having to buy a laser etching machine. I was not aware that powder coats could be layered like this. Thanks so much for the tips.
That is awesome! Nice job. You make it look so easy.
Same method I use. Works great! You'll see how quickly people come out of the woodwork when they find out you can do this!
Very cool! I was looking at getting an Eastman powder coating system over the summer, but they were sold out/ on back order and I eventually just stopped looking. I also just looked at that Cricket Vinyl cutter at Michaels, wondering how good it was, so thanks for clearing that up too! Looks great!
Amazing job on the cups!! 👌💗
Thank you.
I love all your help, thanks for your time. keep up with the great work. #1 fan
Thanks for the complement. More to come as I have time. Which seems to be in way to short supply lately.
Fantastic project.Thnaks
Thank you. 🙏🏼 are you doing some Powdercoating?
Finally did it the right way. Awesome
That looked Amazing!
Sandi D thanks. I was really happy with how it turned out.
I am fixing to get into the powder coating business as a side venture I hope to watch for your videos to get good ideas and see how I can improve
Jason Forrester good luck and thanks for watching. I hope you find these helpful.
Uugh can't wait till I can powdercoat like you! I love that blue color
Thanks. I'm sure your well on your way.
You rock! Thanks for all the great details about temperatures and times. VERY HELPFUL!!
Thanks I have wanted to do cups for my Upholstery shop
I like how it's thicker on the edge of the vinyl/sticker after you remove it and cured.
Thanks for this!
great video! thanks for sharing.
Glad you found it helpful.
do you have a how too video on making that type of stand and how you ran the ground point to it? thxs
Great work! I've been having issues with powder coating cups 1. a two toned blend cup, trying to blend just below the curve of the cup but seem to have to blend even lower due to the over spray. 2. When doing a two toned cup, such as the green monster cup above, I seem to peel up some of the second coat paint when peeling my vinyl off. 3. Orange peel of the powder after cured Any recommendations?? Thanks again!
Great Video.. Alot of good info
Great video! Thanks a ton
Awesome video! Was trying to do the same cup as this video but for some reason when I tried to do the 2nd coat black or wouldn't stick any reason why?
very informative video cant wait to watch saturday on russ's show
Thank you for the video!!
Hi it looks like you are handling cup in between, do you clean with denatured alcohol? What kind of glove was that towards the end?
THANK YOU!!!!
Really nice. I'm an unrepentant Monster energy drink addict so I particularly appreciated this project.
I have a feeling you are not alone. Glad you like it. Thanks for watching.
Greetings from the TubeBuddy Forums! Gave you some feedback there! Left you a like, keep up the great work!
Thanks.
dang it is would love one of them
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks!
How did you make your stands? For the cups or where did you get them?
I'm having trouble getting my cricut to cut without the "cut guides". Any suggestions? It says it's unable to read.
what type of clear transfer paper do you use
what kind of vinyl are you using? I have tried several but none have come off as easily as what you just showed. great video, very helpful
That's awesome! 👍👏
Anthony C. Thanks.
Trick looking, thanks for the video
+Michael D. Baker my pleasure. Glad you liked it.
Yea, you've inspired me to give it a try.
Michael D. Baker that's what it's all about. Just don't let it take over your life. It's fun, but once people see what you can do you will get busy.
Yea, I feel you on that one. I got caught up in converting old coins from the 1800's into rings and everyone loved them so much I had endless orders. It's now my semi-retirement making around a dozen a day. I'll bet this would be the same way. Thanks so much for sharing and I'll be watching your other vids.
Mike,

thank you so much Chad for shooting this video. I know I was having problems with getting it to stick and your advice was great. I definitely need to do the earth ground. What kind of gloves do you use? I haven't found any that aren't bulky
Lint free jewelers gloves.
Where can I find the stand you put the cups on to powder coat them ?
Hello I started powder coating I have the single color down but need to two tone once I coated and cooked first color how do I apply second color
Thanks for the video. Quick question. On some of the mugs, it seems the vinyl leaves a glue residue behind. Do you know if there is something we can do to stop that from happening? Generally using oracle 651.
+Jodie Farmer I use Cricut rose or 631 if I'm removing the vinyl. If I catch the glue before full cure I clean it with VM&P Naptha like I show in one of my other videos.
nice job
Mike Forrest Thanks Mike. I try.
Great video have made several cups using this method and they look great. What if anything do you do to soften the edges after you remove the pattern? I was thinking of buffing the cup.
Joe Rizzo it tends to flow well if you take it out of the oven early enough.
Nice diy, I used to paint commercial and one thing we did to reduce the orange peel texture effect was to sand down the walls before applying the second coat. I know I'm this case it wouldn't work as you would scratch the logo but maybe the tip will come in handy in other methods.
I've actually used that method for repairing a bad coat before, but never thought of it helping with orange peel. Thanks for the tip.
Nice! Where did you get the base that you used?
very good work on the cup if I send you a cup can you do the same thing on it
Chad that color of blue is awesome....
Robert Evans thanks Robert!
This is an awesome video... I also like the stand. Do you have a video on building the stand? Thanks
Here you go. czcams.com/video/HHle3CbMCZ8/video.html
Nice job. Can you try the Zero Ultra design. It's the white Monster can. It looks great.
Good question. I got a lot of other videos finished that I still need to edit. I’ll see what I can do. Thanks for watching.
I like how you used the two colors. I have been experimenting with the reverse of this paint and having issues. black underneath and candy red over entire cup and sometimes it covers nice. sometimes it doesn't want to cover the graphic area where the base black graphic is? any ideas
Try hot coating. I put the cup back in the oven and when it gets about 200 I pull it and apply the powder when the cup is at about 180.
Hello loved your video for the tumblers and putting vinyl on the cup I am just starting out and wanted to a couple for my nephew he just started college. What kind of vinyl do you use to put on the cup, and then take off....Thank You much keep up the great videos. Tom
I’ve used both Oracal and Cricut. Both work. It’s just critical to remove before the vinyl gets too hot. Just after flow is good.
Thank you so much are the vinyls the same or are there certain types to stay away from like the iron-on I know not to use. Thanks so much ill try to remember to post when done. Have a great day..
Hi! Thank you so much for sharing your techniques. Quick question, when I tried this it seemed that my vinyl was powder coated underneath. I feel like I got it to thick. Did you prewarm your cup with the sticker on it before applying the final coat? You made it look so easy when you removed the vinyl.
Johnnie Werner powder stuck to the vinyl? I'm not 100% sure what you're asking. I coat and 80% cure. Then apply vinyl. Heat to about 200F then apply second coat at 180F. Back in oven for 90 sec. Pull from oven and let cool below 150. Pull the vinyl. Back in oven for pmt and full cure.
Yes i guess you can say the powder stuck to my vinyl. But this was my first attempt. Will try again! LOL and again if need to :)
Great video, saw both...i noticed when layering as in this (your second video), that the second coat is obviously on top of the first, therefore the logo is slightly indented. were you able to get it flat or close to smooth the first video ?
Also, is there a clear powder you could do in a third step to level it out ?
Andrew Whitelocke there is a slight indention. I kind of liked it. Definitely adding a clear over the entire cup would help level it.
Thanks for the information.
Any videos on how you made the lazy Susan?
I do and you are welcome. czcams.com/video/dB2HSfskk4Y/video.html
Can you please do a video on how you designed your stand for the tumblers & ran the ground to it?
Thanx in advance

2 questions. If the vinly leaves a residue how are you getting it off? Or what are you doing to avoid getting the residue? And when only using one color and letting the stainless steal pop through do you use a clear coat or what do you do to make it a smooth surface all the way around the cup?
I pull the template before the powder completely flows. It gives a smooth transition. You can still tell it's different heights, but it's smooth. As for glue. czcams.com/video/2GP7VsB_zug/video.html
Great Video Chad! I'm going to be trying this out tomorrow. My business here in Alabama is starting to take off so want to try some different paint graphics. I got your paint stand in the mail this past Monday and love it. I will be purchasing another paint stand in the next couple of weeks. To anyone reading this, buy one, it really works. I see in this video you are using the shop towel on the plate to keep paint out of the inside. Is this better than the baking mats? I am waiting for those same mats from China (obviously in on a slow boat from China). Thanks again for a great video (and it is well done, I do training videos and know a little something about them). One request, how about a tour of your setup. It would be interesting to see it.
As long as you remove it before baking too long I think it's working out very well. Very low cost. I get 4 cups out of each sheet. I'm cutting the sheet off after I drop the washer. I precut about 1/3 from the center and 1/3 from the outside. This makes it easy to remove the sheet without touching the cup.
I have been thinking of doing that. I get a lot of questions that could be answered by doing that.
I'm having an issue getting powder to stick to top of cup. I own a Muffler shop in Palestine Texas so I'm going to build some stands this week. But how do I ground through the paper towel like your doing. Should I run a ground separate. Or is there a way without doing that.
It's grounding through the aluminum I have on the top of the stand on the inside of the tumbler.
Very informative and great job. I am wondering if you do personalization for others? I have a son-in-law that is a Police Officer and I was wondering if there was any way to get his shield on a cup with his badge number along the bottom? I've never seen this done before but I'd sure like to get it done for him as a gift.

I'm having a problem with my powder coating. wonder if u can help me. I have a stand similar to yours, I use blue shop towels as insulator. when I start shooting, the powder seems to gather at the mouth of the cup making it look like a "run" when u over spray while painting. I make a conscious effort not to spray near the mouth of the cup but the powder seems to accumulates in that area. I hope I made some sense and you can picture it. is there anything I need to do differently. thanks for your time.
Jaime Pando send me pictures at ManCrafting on FaceBook.
I'm curious, being that its more difficult to put graphics or decals on when gloves, is it necessary to clean cup for 2nd coat when not using gloves, and if so with what? Thanks!
SylentNite I’d make sure my hand were as oil free as possible then wipe it down with Windex.
Good deal, thanks got the quick response!
how do you prep the finish on an already painted yeti cup? I have a few that have paint defects from the factory and I want to refinish them myself
Anytime I want to recoat an already coated tumbler I sand and then hot coat if I'm covering with the same color. If you want to completely redo the tumbler you can strip it completely.
very through, i digg it.
check out the laser etching we do over at our shop
Great videos. Is there a noticeable difference between dual voltage and original powder guns?
clyde nobles variable would be best. Dual is a compromise. At that price point the Eastwood Dual is the leader.
I've been using duck brand adhesive contact paper for my stencils. I'm curious if you've tried it and how t compares to the cricut vinyl. I can get a 22' roll of this for $6 in clear and in whatever pattern they have at the time.
+Brian Martinez I haven't. Where do you buy it? Cricut is much more expensive so I'm certainly willing to give it a try. I love reducing costs as much as anyone. Sometimes it works out great, other times it doesn't. You never know until you try.
+ManCraftingTM just from Walmart. I think it's the same stuff you're using for your clear top sticker on your stencils just with an opaque pattern. Although I usually need to use that naphthalene stuff to get the adhesive off before finishing. But at least it's cheap.
does the 651 or 631 vinyl hold up better in the oven? Iv gave some of the 631 draw up or shrink on me. I have ordered 651 to give it a try. what is your ta k e on it?
Chris Clary for permanent I use 651. Non permanent I use Cricut Rose and make sure the powder is at least 80% cured first.
Great video. Is the vinyl you used just regular vinyl or HTV?
Usually I use Oracal 651
How did you make your lazy Suzan? That is the best design I have seen
Jim Williams 6 inch plate with a tab welded to it. Then I added a lazy Susan bearing. I used a 3 inch, but 4 or 5 would do.
what is the name of the paint gun you are using
What type of cricut vinyl do you use? And what transfer paper? Would you recommend your favorite powder paint?
We have been using Cricut Rose for peel off and Oracal 651 for permanent. All Powder Paints and Prismatic, but there are several good companies. Columbia, Tiger etc...
i noticed some of the powders i am interested in doing require a chrome base coat but the yeti i am trying to do already has the decal on it. How would i go about doing both coats if possible?
Cody East I don't think it's required. More of a recommendation.
I'm just starting out powder coating. Do you use heat transfer vinyl or regular vinyl? Thanks
David Jennings for removing I just use regular Cricut or Oracal vinyl. amzn.to/2FRMD2W
Hello can you use a smoker to heat the yeti instead of a oven. What type of powder coat fun do you use? Great vids keeper coming
I've looked at electric smokers thinking the same thing. I just haven't seen one that goes above 300 degrees. So unless you can find one that gets hotter I'd say no.
What psi do you have your air compressor set to that your gun hooks up to? I have been having issues getting the powder flow to be consistent.
We keep it at 8-10 PSI. What gun are you using?
+ManCraftingTM I have the Eastwood dual phase gun. I think most of my problem was due to the small size of my air compressor.
+Nathan McCrary we used a pancake for 6 months. Right now I have a hot dog until I finish installing my 60 gallon. It is a little inconsistent. I think it has a crappy pressure regulator.
+Nathan McCrary also, make sure you cup is only 1/4 to 1/3 full. Too full causes issues.
ManCraftingTM What’s a good beginner air compressor? I plan on purchasing the Eastwood dual voltage kit
How do I order a custom cup like this ?
I have been having so much fun with my Daughter doing these cups!! We have learned everything from watching your awesome videos so first off THANK YOU!! I used orcal 651 vinyl and cant seem to get it off! Should I be using a different kind? Pull it out of the oven faster? Could my topcoat be too thick? Just wondering if you have any thoughts on what to try differently before I keep messing up cups! LOL
Thanks. I'm glad your enjoying the videos. Some people who pull the vinyl when the cup is still dangerously hot love 651. I prefer the vinyls that barely stay on the cup. Cricut Rose works well for us. Not sure how long you left it in the oven, but 2.5 min is plenty. Pull, cool until you can handle the cup. Usually around 125. Pull the vinyl.
Thank you SOOOOO much for the quick reply! I was also heating it on 450 and saw in some of your other comments/videos you said that was too hot too! You are a life saver! I ordered some lint free jewelry gloves too! I melted the pair I was using to a cup!!! :o
+Sheila Gregory ouch. Definitely handling it too hot. 😱
Could you do a video showing how you did the grounding?
czcams.com/video/VKTpt_9uLmg/video.html
I'm new to this process do you have a step by step instructional video how to set up everything?
I don't think I have one video that is necessarily step by step, but this one should help. Actually I have two...
czcams.com/video/XkMPfN8Ks0E/video.html
czcams.com/video/lwrRW6g5RjE/video.html
I'm so sad cause I can never do 2 coats, and I can't install an earth ground.
I got the same gun you have do you have any recommendations?
Thank you
Awesome Job BTW love the tutorials!
cynthia martinez have you tried hot flicking or hot coating on the second coat? Apply the powder when the cup is about 180F. Why can't you install an earth ground?
How do I get the logos transferred to the cup? The stickers have to be double sided correct? Where can I find them?
There is only glue on one side. There is transfer paper that you use to put it on the cup. I make my own, but there are people that you can order them from on Etsy.
Quick question about the vinyl and applying it. Did the vinyl come with the clear backing or is that transfer tape you purchased separately?
Jackie Daniels transfer tape purchased separately.
ManCraftingTM Thanks so much for the reply, I love what you're doing. Keep it up!!
Jackie Daniels thanks!
Hello, been checking out all your videos. Great tips! I do have a couple of questions though... I think I used too good of vinyl since it took me forever to get the glue back off my cup, what is the vinyl called that you use? Second question is for your original monster cup, what is that monster green called?
Thanks, WES
Wesley Cone it's Cricut Rose. Not very sticky.
amzn.to/2dGxbFs
Thank you!
Can you please provide the model of the circut thank you and great work!!!
This is the one I use. goo.gl/nfps6c
Great video, I want to know about the lazy Susan, did you make it or buy it? Watch other videos with powder coating cups and didn’t see any lazy Susan‘s like yours. Thanks
I made them. You can send me an email mancrafting101@gmail.com and I can send the specifics.
ManCraftingTM would love to see a video on making that too! That is a great setup...
ManCraftingTM would love to see a video on making that too! That is a great setup...
Sir, what material (cloth, paper towels, etc...) do you use to wipe down your cups? Especially between coats after applying vinyl? Thanks in advance!
Mike Carmody shop towels. amzn.to/2LFt0dT that and windex or simple green diluted works great.
Thank you. So, after applying viny, and before the clear, you use windex?
I noticed that you did not worry about cleaning up the cup after you touch it whenever you applied the vinyl. Is this a non-issue?
My hands are generally fairly free of oil since I am cleaning a lot with cleaners during the process. If I used lotion on my hands it would be an issue for sure.
What was the set up w the filter where you were spraying the powder coating?
I have an air filter in front of a fan. The fan is in an enclosure and that enclosure is attached to a shop vac.
Is your earth ground just connected to the base plate and the ground?
Then you powder gun is a separate ground?
Thank you
spydergs07 correct.
Can you tell me what vinyl cutter you use, which vinyl and what transfer tape and when exactly is the best time to remove the vinyl after the second coat? And is it easy to learn to use the vinyl cutter?
I have had an issue with the vinyl being hard to remove even after trying to remove it just after the powder starts to flow. I can get it off but can take 30 mins to an hour to get the vinyl removed and breaks off in small pieces. Any advice? Thanks in advance. Oh and your earth ground advice on the video works magnificent for my second and third coats.
I just put links to everything in the description. I usually remove the
vinyl about 2-2 1/2 mins after the cup is back in the oven. The powder
should mostly have flowed. I let it cool to about 120 then remove
before it gets too cool. If I notice the powder having issues i bring
the temp back up.
Make sure the vinyl isn't getting too hot for too long. All vinyls have different properties, so try a different one. I linked the one I use. Also if it takes too long reheat the cup to allow it to be easy to remove. Just a quick moment back in the oven. It just needs to be around 120.
Do you have any problems with the powder chipping off? And, how do you prep the surface of the cup?
No. I just clean it with Simple Green or Windex.
Chad, is there a reason you switched back to paper towels? I saw in earlier videos that you were using the silicon sheets, and it looked easier because you didn't have to remove the sheet like you do with the towels. I always seem to mess up the powder while removing the towels.
Tim Wolf it’s cheap. I can throw them away. The silicone had to be cleaned to be used over and over.
I too seem to be having problems with my powder coming out consistently. seems I get a larger burst of powder when I first pull the trigger then it slows down to a decent amount. you seem to have barely any access on the stand or booth...any tips or tricks?
Add a pressure regulator.
+ManCraftingTM The regulator needs to be closer to the gun though, correct? I have the same issue, but I think it's because of all the air built up in the line from the regulator to the gun.
I was making one like Candy purple with clear coat but when I was applying the clear coat i was getting little bubbles on the cup do you know why this happens? was my cup to hot or to cold or what :(
Where are on the cup were the bubbles? Everywhere or just at the seam? I haven't had that issue, but I would guess if it's everywhere it may be too hot.
Was the blue base coat color from eastwood? if so, what color was it. Turned out great!
Miles Batchelor actually it’s Anodized Blue from Prismatic.
ManCraftingTM thanks for the reply. That turned out great!
I tried this with almost identical colors but after I coated it with the black and pulled it out of the oven to remove the stickers, it looks as though my stickers began to melt and shrivel up and pulled some of the blue with it. Do you have an email I could send the photo to? The only thing I can think of is perhaps I didn't cure the blue long enough before pulling it out of the oven? Have you had a similar issue?
ManCrafting101 at gmail. Not that specific situation, but others have. Definitely a time issue. Either not long enough on first coat or too long on second.
That blue is gorgeous. What's it called and where can I buy some?
Prismatic Anodized Blue.
Do you have a video about the ground rod you use
I do. czcams.com/video/VKTpt_9uLmg/video.html
Thanks for the video, I’m going to venture out of my comfort zone and do it….
Awesome. Let me know how it goes.
Can you add metal flakes to a powder coat to make it look shiny or like it has glitter on it and if so do you have a tutorial on how to do this?
There are powders with metal flake in them already. The finished tumbler resembles a car with metal flake. Nothing like the epoxy coated tumblers people are doing.
Wow...I just got my gun in. My Dad surprised me with it and 6 colors of powder. I have watched so many videos and still afraid to begin. Can you tell me where you buy the stand you set your cups on? And do you have more info on the grounding you were talking about? Also, I was hoping to do some large and medium washer for the game and jewelry...do you have any tips on how to get both sides powder coated without any places being missed? Thank you in advance for you any guidance. Jackie Gray
First off, you have a very cool Dad! Second, I am putting the grounding video up tomorrow. As for missing areas on washers, just using a thin wire seems to do a pretty good job covering the washer. I had to really focus to find the area where my fairly thick wire contacted the inside edge of the washer. I was concerned about that as well. Then lastly, I built my stand and many people contact me to build some for them. I'll be building another dozen or two over the weekend. Email me at ManCrafting 101 at gmail to get more info.
Thank you very kindly for getting back with me. I went this morning to buy the washers and wire. Going to give it a try this weekend....YIKES...LOL
There isn’t a step where you pulled the decal off? Should your clear the whole thing so it’s all smooth from the base color to the top color?
