  • Can you hear the Rainestorm? Today we will be doing an analysis on the moral complexities of The Owl House's favorite freedom fighter--Raine Whispers! In our world, the name Raine is gentle and pretty, but on the Boiling Isles the name is basically *boiling acid*. And frankly, that's just where the danger begins with the truly terrifying Raine.

Another thing i love is how raine's ruthlessness doesn't necessarily translate to them being heartless. When asking for eda's help, they specify "if you have nothing to lose" and don't ask anything of her just yet. They're letting her know what she's getting herself into beforehand, instead of springing the sacrifice play on her later on. Then when playing the requiem, they mention, "we may not make it out ourselves", and there's an implication of "but you already knew that". Because, again, they made sure she knew what she was signing up for.
Alternatively, i think they could have been giving eda one last chance to back out. Granted, i don't know what they would have done if she had, but it's still an acknowledgement that this sacrifice is a massive ask from them. Even if they think that eda has nothing to lose if they go through with it.
They still obviously care deeply about eda, to the point where they almost seem regretful over asking such a big favour from her (again) with the sigil, but it takes an incredibly strong person to not put personal attachments in front of their cause. They want to keep eda safe but not at the cost of the entire boiling isles. Ruthlessness has not made them uncaring or cruel, they're just willing to make sacrifices, even if they're not their own.
Fantastic video! This entire thing was so thorough and well put-together, i was astounded to realise it was only 10 minutes. This whole channel is full of nothing but gems.

      @@idlescree A quote from Animorphs that I think perfectly encapsulates ruthlessness;
""People don't understand the word ruthless. They think it means 'mean.' It's not about being mean. It's about seeing the bright, clear line that leads from A to B. The line that goes from motive to means. Beginning to end. It's about seeing that bright, clear line and not caring about anything but the beautiful fact that you can see the solution. Not caring about anything else but the perfection of it.""
I think that encapsulates this mode of action beautifully. It shows the exact meaning of ruthlessness without cruelty. This character in that series is one of my favorites, simply because he knows how to win, and is willing

It really makes me wish we saw more of them (although I feel that way about all Coven heads.) If I had Raine as an enemy I'd certainly sleep with one eye open. I'm not sure who I consider the most dangerous adult characters outside of Belos but I imagine Raine would be up there if I made a list. I’ve been able to point out moments that resonated with me. The reveal that Raine has been faking their submission to Tera while completely cognizant and actively rebelling the whole time. Raine’s sympathetic look at Hunter in Any Sport in a Storm while still reluctantly but willingly following the other coven heads. Their entire motivation being to keep Eda safe, but failing over and over again. Their character is constantly at odds with itself but it actually works to make them a more believable person.
After everything they’ve been through, I’m glad they’re the one who was possessed by Belos. Every coven head has sacrificed so much (just consider the chances that Darius knew *something* about Belos’s grimwalkers), but Raine is the one we learn the most about. For so much of their lives, they’ve been complicit in Belos’s plans. Them being possessed is the physical manifestation of all their struggles. And also gives them the opportunity to overcome them.

For me personally it would make sense why the three decided to rebel together, we already know that Darius was hurt by the previous guard’s death and showed distain towards Hunter following Belos blindly, but giving their ages and Hunter’s age it could work.
Obviously not much can support this theory besides the interactions we’ve seen between the three, we don’t know how long the rebellion has been in motion, but for me personally it feels like an interesting way to connect these characters instead of just small, yet significant, interactions between.

i wanna add something about the moment when Raine pulls Eda's hand
(sorry if any of this sounds scuffed, english is not my native language)
so what i wanna talk about is their "last" words
"I promised a special kid i will protect you"
they knew they probably wont make it out alive. it was their last words. they chose this words, not "i love you" or smth
    why?
so, after "Eda's requiem" they were determined to keep Eda safe. they knew she will go on a suicide mission if needed.
and she went to confront Darius and Eberwolf with Raine in the first place because she thought her kids didn't love her
so the thing they decided to tell is to reassure her, that she has people to lose, that they love her, that they specifically went to ask Raine to protect her.
they made sure she wont try to kill herself again
but anyway they are alive and gay so thats okay 😊

Loved the video! Raine is my favorite character, and I relate to them a lot. I've had to do some things which sacrificed a lot for me, so seeing you talk about that part of Raine's character is really refreshing for me. They're actually what inspired me to make those sacrifices, and those sacrifices and risks actually helped me survive many times. I also have a bit more to say, so I'll put a little "hot take warning" right here.
Something not mentioned in the video that extenuates the points made, is that Raine also knows their boundaries and when they need to enforce them. Raine seemed to not exactly be asking Eda to tell them everything about her curse, but more to just be open with her emotions and not be so distant from them. By the way they say "You're doing it again" to Eda, and after saying "I can't do this anymore" shows that they've probably asked multiple times, and had that looming over until they couldn't handle it anymore.
Also, the way that Eda says "hey, I know that face" anytime Raine is worried about her and Raine has to later tell her "don't tell me not to worry" has got me thinking a lot. And that thinking has lead me to the hopw that they don't actually get together in the end.
First off, when characters meet up again like this in media, they usually get back together and it's so romantic and stuff. Or you see them hate each other after the breakup. You don't really see many characters just staying friends. And we all know how much Dana Terrace loves subverting tropes.
And second off, though they may have had a good time with Eda, it didn't seem the most stable, and Eda has changed, but still has a lot of those barriers up.
(Small detail I've noticed, Raine very easily blushes when embarrassed/flustered, but we never see them blushing back at Eda when she does. It's usually just a nervous tick at the most, which, with them being perceptive, my theory for that is that they possibly noticed how she was looking at them and felt awkward about it.)
(No hate to any Raeda shippers BTW just stuff I've noticed)

That in the finale raine, with very little hesitation, smashed their own palisman in hopes of stopping belos from accessing the titan's heart. this video reminded me of a fantasy book series that also has quite the emphasis on sacrifice and greater good vs. personal attachment. (a fuckton of spoilers for Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. i dont even know why i made this comment.)
Eda reminds me a lot of Aelin, and Raine reminds me a lot of Dorian.
Aelin has a fate to sacrifice all of her magic and her self to forge the Lock and put it into place to seal the three Wyrdkeys into the Wyrdgate. This is purely because of an ancient debt caused by the mistake of Elena in her efforts to defeat the Valg king Erawan. Because Aelin has godly fire magic and blood relation to Elena, she is eligible to forge the Lock.
But Dorian also has a blood relation to Elena, and godly raw magic(raw magic is the ability to make your magic take any form you need or want). He has both requirements as well, but the only difference is he has nothing to lose and a lot more pain.
Aelin has been through a lot in her 19 years on Erilea, but through all of the torture and pain she found family and love and caring friends in Dorian, Chaol, Rowan, Fenrys, Elide, and Lysandra to name a few. She had people to help her heal from child abuse, the labor camp, being forced to work for a tyrant, waking up covered in her parents' blood, etc.
But Dorian, being the son of a tyrannical king, hasn't been able to find that many people. The only person being Chaol for the longest time, and when chaos was brought to his doorstep via Aelin, he finally found a lot of friends. But even then he didnt let himself get too close to them after being possessed by a Valg Prince and having an identity crisis because while being possessed he learned to like hurting innocent people.
So Dorian tried to take Aelins place in forging the Lock, even though Aelin (now being reasonably suicidal) came up with a plan to fulfill everyones wishes, keeping everyone she cares about safe, and forging almost the entirety of the Lock. The only reason they're both alive now is Aelins plan, and two strokes of luck one of them being a very anti-climactic reveal.
Just like Raine, Dorian had nothing to lose. And just like Eda, Aelin was fine with ending herself for the greater good even if other people depended on her.

Love your character analysis here (and in masks off) These are wonderful (and I'm pointing authors to them because there are some good take aways here)

    Spoilers for Watching and Dreaming
I feel like we see this endless determination where Raine is possessed by Belos, but they still fight to the goddamn end. They first force Belos out out of their body, and after that follows him to the heart of the titan, and that was not easy, when Hunter was possed by Belos he passed out and almost died from it, but Raine just kept going until the the very end.
Even when they were trapped by the upgraded Belos goop, they were whistling, just trying to do something.
What a fucking badass, I knew I loved them. Also, they're the first nonbinary disney character.

Thanks for the vid! Raine could have easily become a Gale-like character (Hunger Games) and what I admire most about Raine is how he kept his compassion while having to watch his fellows and citizens get hurt.

I loved this video! We really need Raine content, they are the best and I think a lot of people do not pay enough attention to how deep an strong can their motivations and actions be

    **SEASON 3 EPISODE 3 SPOILER**
Raine’s palisman didn’t get taken, in ‘Watching and Dreaming’ we see they have a fox palisman and if we look at their fiddle it has a fox end, meaning their palisman was probably disguised so they wouldn’t have to give it to Belos (Dana also confirmed their palisman’s name is Fiddlesticks)
