  • ( www.TFLtruck.com ) What half ton pickup truck is the towing king of the world? This time we've upped the ante and we go all in with 10,000 pounds of pain. Is it the Ford F-150 or the Nissan Titan or the new Chevy Silverado 6.2L. Today on The Fast Lane Truck we put these three of these trucks to the test as they take on the Ike Gauntlet 2.0.
    In Episode 1 we start with the oldest truck of the group....The 2014 Nissan Titan.
    The Ike Gauntlet is a timed run up one of America's steepest highways from 9,000 feet above sea level to the top of the mountain at entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado. Check out this promo for what's coming up soon on The Fast Lane Truck.

    Over the past ten years the Titan has competed with three generations of the Silverado, and two generations of the F-150, and it still is a worthy competitor. Nissan has made a very good truck.

    Interesting to see all the import truck haters out there....The Nissan Titan, introduced in 2004, and with no major revisions to the truck since (it was class-leading at the time and introduced many innovative features as well), is still competative with the latest and greatest from the "Big 3", as evidenced by this test. Sure its due for an update, which will happen in 2015. I bet that they build a new Titan that will dispatch the domestic trucks with ease, and let them play catch-up for another 10 years.
    The Ford's brakes were at least 100 degrees hotter than the Nissan's, even WITH an integrated trailer brake control. Point: Nissan.
    The Ford, even with it's EcoBoost technology (let's see how reliable it is as the miles rack up) that gives it an advantage at this altitude and a 6-speed transmission, only managed to pull 0.1 MPG better up this grade (2.9 vs. 2.8)? The 5.6L Endurance engine has proven to be bulletproof, and anyone towing with an EcoBoost is not going to get significantly better MPG, at least not enough to warrant the increased premium cost of the engine initially, nor the increased maintenance and repair costs that will inevitably turn up. Of course, if you aren't planning on keeping the truck for 250,000 miles and trading it in as the warranty runs out, I guess that won't matter. Other than the downtime....
    The GM, with a larger, 10-year newer 6.2L engine SHOULD do better than the 5.6L in the Titan, so that was expected. Again, 6 speed transmission gives it an edge. When the Titan came out in '04, the Ford and GM offerings had 4 speed autos in them, so like I said, Nissan led the way (technically, the RAM 1500 was also available with an optional 5 speed auto, so I'll give credit where credit is due). The 2007 Tundra was first to market with a 6 speed auto in a half-ton. Let's see what debuts on the new version of the Titan, I'm sure it will impress.
    Hopefully, TFL Trucks will do a comparo at that time and re-do this test with the latest models from each manufacturer, and then we'll see where the numbers are. For the record, I own a 2005 Titan 4x4, with 258,000 (and counting) miles on it. I tow every summer with it, and the engine and transmission are all original with no repairs done, only normal maintenance. I drive it every day (obviously, with 258k on it). It has been, and will continue to be, rock solid. Go drive any domestic truck with 258k on it and then come talk smack about which truck is a POS.....

    How about a video of standard engines and standard towing?? FYI, Nissan is the only truck on the market with a STANDARD V8. Not to mention Nissan Titan is the ONLY TRUCK with Dana 44's. You know the company that makes axels for JEEPS. Also, Titans have the biggest drive shafts, and U joints. Titan's are also made in Mississippi. Chevy, GMC, Ford, Dodge, Toyota all have a standard V6. Whats the point of a V6 in a full size truck? F-150's are made here, Chevys are 50% mexican or Canadian made and half are built in Canada so the ones built in Canada are imports by definition. Dodges engine and trans are built in mexico. Dodge is the most foreign truck. Toyota trucks are made in the UAW and Toyota's UAW refuses to fire its workers when times are slow. In Fenton, MO where I live Chrysler closed a 1500 job plant, but Toyota's UAW makes the workers do landscaping and what not so they still get a paycheck. Sorry for the off topic on where trucks are made but its frustrating when people call Toyota and Nissan trucks foreign when they are made right here in America with 60% of the parts made here as well if not more. Ive been going to dealers all over Missouri and test driving trucks as well as looking the small sticker that tells where its made. Most American in order from research shows this: Ford, Nissan, Toyota are the most American. Then Chevy/GMC. Dodge is the 70% Mexican made. Well its obvious from my economic degree that when something is not made here or the parts are not made by Americans that receive a paycheck and buy goods and pay taxes then how does that help our economy. Again sorry about the off topic but people need to wake up and cant just judge a book by its cover. Go out and do research. Its not hard. Im not here to argue im here to talk about this. So if yall want to have a normal conversation then ill be more then happy. Nissan does have the highest standard towing.

    Hey guys. I have a 2011 pro 4x crew cab with lift kit and 35 MTs. It also has Airiad Mxp cai and Bully dog tune. Even family members drive it and are very impressed how a 7 year old 68k miles truck has so much power and speed and handles the moderate high desert terrain with no problems. In December 2010 I paid 28.4k for it new. In 7 years it's had 1 bad battery 1 bad rear window regulator 1 cracked exhaust header. Those 3 were replace under warranty. I am the only one in my family who will off-road my truck because other members all paid north of the high 50k for their trucks and are afraid to break them. I regularly maintain this Titan and plan on keeping it until the engine or trans falls out which should be at minimum another 120k miles.

I just like the Japanese build quality better, they are smooth and quiet even after putting 200k+ miles. The Titan was pretty much the first 1/2 ton class truck to come with a premium engine as its only engine unlike FoMoCo, GM and Dodge/Fiat where they offer several different engines. It was also as far as I can tell to come out with a truck engine that has a DOHC, Lincoln Navigator had the 5.4L DOHC but never the F150. So it is decent. Mileage is that of the 2 valve and 3 valve 5.4L SOHC Triton engines. Other than the TItans having crap until 08 when they did several redesigns for the suspension and exhaust to help with 04-07 problems.

I am really interested to see what the Chevrolet/GMC 6.2 towing numbers look like and one of the comparisons I am making is between the Eco boost and the 6.2 Sierria. Thanks Guys

    I loved my Titan. I worked the piss out of it. It always felt strong. The Titan felt stable and planted to the road. It had the most connected feel to the road of any truck i had driven, with good feedback and handling.
    I love the look of the Ford. But if i HAD to buy a truck tomorrow, I would buy the Chevy. It would do everything I need and it does it in more comfort and refinement. But if the new Titan was already out, I would buy it tomorrow. Well, as long as they do not screw up the looks like they did with the pathfinder.

    I think that Cummins that passed you just proved once again why diesels are king up there. Presumably that 5th wheel was about 12-15k lbs? But the 10-yr old Titan did well. Looking forward to the new model with its own Cummins and I would assume it will also offer the direct-injected 5.6 V8 with 400 HP / 410 lb-ft with 7 or 8 speed auto.

    I get a kick out of the Nissan hater comments. I live in Texas, where I think it's in the state constitution that you're required to own a truck because EVERYone seems to have one. Mine is a Titan (2005); brother's is a Ford (2016); father's is a Dodge (2017). Mine is the ONLY ONE to come standard with a V8. They had to upgrade theirs to get a V8 and mine still gets better mileage. Mine comes standard with the Dana 44 axel (I believe theirs are 35s), which means mine is way more appropriately configured for heavy-duty use. Mine came standard with extendable towing mirrors and I've towed a fully loaded toy-hauler/camper, all the gear in the bed, a wife, four kids, and two dogs in the cab and my Titan rolled along at highway speeds with no increase in brake, engine, or transmission temperature. Mine even came standard with a sprayed on bed liner that neither of theirs had available (although I think one of them listed that as an option). The big thing for me is the quality. My Titan is now 16-years old and she still fires up immediately, blows ZERO smoke, doesn't burn oil and has lost a grand total of 3hp at 167,000 miles. After all these years and miles I can still drive her and hear no creaks, squeaks, or rattles from anywhere. All the switches and buttons still work and aside from one starter motor and one alternator, the only time she's been in the shop is for normal maintenance. Compare that to my brother's and father's trucks, both of which have been in the shop for various reasons or another; both have already begun to creak and rattle; and neither have the same features as my old girl. People can fist pump the whole American brand thing all they want, but my Titan is more American made than Ford or GM and it's clearly holding up better. I don't think either of their trucks will last another 5 years, to say nothing about making it to sixteen years. And I won't even mention the time I had to pull the brother's Ford up a hill because it got itself stuck in the sandy slope.

      Bigger heavier same drivetrain for the most part. And more gizmos than it needs. The best thing about the titan is you KNOW what you can tow. With ford (of which im a fan boy) of this year will tow anywhere from 4k-11k depending on options. The titan is 7.5k-9.5k if you got tow mirrors and a trans gauge you got 9.5 if not 7.5 i know no matter the titan i drive i can tow a tandem axle trailer loaded to its capacity and not worry. In a ford im checking axle codes and running vin checks to see what build the truck is because it has too many options. My titan also sounds better lol

    Not bad for a truck designed in 2003 to compete with brand new 2014 designs. Some are on their second design in those 10 years. Here's a video idea. Take a 2008 Nissan Titan and put it against the Ford F150, Chevy 1500, Dodge 1500 of the same year and redo this test. The Titan VK56 5.6L V8 would destroy the Ford 5.4L V8, Chevy 5.3L V8 doesn't stand a chance, Dodge Hemi 5.7L V8 might hang with it. Of those trucks only Ford and Nissan had fully boxed frames. Nissan produced a very solid truck for the time. Even in 2008 the Nissan Titan tow ratings were the same or higher than those trucks.

  • @MaxEffortSooner
    @MaxEffortSooner Před 10 lety +2

    Comment for Fast Lane. Each truck,each trailer and each trailer brake will have a different gain setting. The correct way to calibrate is to accelerate to approx 25 mph then only using the trailers brakes slow the truck. Continue to increase or decrease gain until the trailer slows the truck at a normal pace without locking up the tires on the trailer. Just FYI. This is probably why the brakes have gotten so hot in all these videos.

    • @MaxEffortSooner
      @MaxEffortSooner Před 10 lety

      I don't feel that they intend to be bias. Everyone has their preferences. Me im a Ford guy. The only reason that is cause I've owned every brand of truck except a nissan or Toyota. I worked in the oil fields of Oklahoma and saw every other brand pull and work through mud and snow. My grand father was a ford man till the day he died. He had 40year old ford trucks out there still running better than newer Chevy or Dodge. My conclusion after all these experiences was that Ford makes the better workhorse. I am glad they stepped up their game in tech. Toyota would be my second choice. Dodge at a very tight third. Chevy then Nissan. I have lots of friends with Nissans all say their fuel eco just sucks. And for as old of a power train as it is,its power and capability is impressive. 10 years ago one of the better trucks. Today not so much. Well see if that changes with the new diesel engine. I don't think it will but maybe.

    • @MaxEffortSooner
      @MaxEffortSooner Před 10 lety

      Well dodge has come a long way.used to have problem after problem. Now hardly any recalls or warranty issues. I know they work great in the trenches. But if u work that means u like to save money. Right now dodge only has the power. They haven't hit the right combo of power and economy. Ford has. I seriously in my king ranch 4x4 get 17 mpg in the city. 21 to 22 hwy. And people say I'm BSing I had took a pic of one of my empty tanks. And on my display it said 597mi. On that tank I was still 50 to E. 23mpg. Now that trip was mostly flat. But that's what I got. And my king ranch has 3.73 rear end and the eco boost engine. Now one of my buddies recently let me drive his 2013 Big Horn. loved it. Air ride suspension can u say sweet. Felt just as powerful as my truck but that mpg didn't get better than 13 city. Now if ur a truck guy like I am. Then u know that 4mpg on a 28 gallon or bigger (in my case 36 gallon) that's a huge difference. Over 100 mile range difference on the 28 gallon tank. Good news dodge patterned with Fiat and designed an ecodiesel. Low on HP but high on TQ. Now they estimated a 10000 lb tow rating when properly equiped and 20 mpg overall 25 hwy and 18 city when released. Great. But diesel in TN right now (that's where I live now.) Is $3.89 compared to $3.02 for gas. In closing I would say great product and its worth buying but I'm very pleased with my king Ranch so it would take a lot of convincing to get me to change over. If you plan on buying a new truck and its a Dodge and u dont tow very heavy loads think about getting that Pennistar v6. Great buy great mpg and decent towing. By the way u used to buy exclusively through David Stanley Ford. My dad still does.

    Great video guys! I love the Ike Gauntlet 2.0 because it actually stresses the trucks.
    I'm still puzzled about the F150 tow rating though. I'm pretty positive that the tow rating on the F150 Limited trim is 7500 lbs due to the 22 inch rims, low-pro tires, and extra cab weight; even with the Ecoboost and 3.73 rear end. Out of curiosity, are you really going to pull about 3,000 lbs over the tow rating on the Ike Gauntlet 2.0? I know the Ecoboost can do it, but is it safe? After all, you just made the video about unsafe towing and magic towing dust.
    Damn Ford! Why can't you send a proper truck? Maybe a Lariat with the Max Tow Package and the Ecoboost or 6.2 V8.

    • @Fordguy1997
      @Fordguy1997 Před 10 lety +2

      If you "build and price" an f150 it says the towing and payload capacity of the truck that you are building. Also, under specs it will have the towing for that Limited trim. Take my word for it, the towing capacity is 7500 pounds. They are 22" rims, not 20". If you opt for 4x4, the towing goes down to 7300 pounds. The Limited trim is certainly not meant for work.

      its a twin turbo v6 is why but now the problems are showing up after getting miles on them, the air is thin and the turbos like on diesels do best in higher elevation's because it compresses the air. you can build a 4 cylinder that will out perform the eco v6 but again it wont last because of the high pressures on the smaller engine just like the v6 vs the v8, v8 will always win in the end, put a twin turbo on those v8's and see what happens

    Guys...I really love you but you have an endless stream of problems with your trailer brake settings. It's a little concerning and a bit irritating. If the temp on your trailer brakes are 80 degrees and the temp on the truck is 700+ then you know that your brake settings are seriously off, even if the trailer has drum brakes. That trailer would run easily at 80 degrees with that load with zero brakes applied...which leads us to believe that zero trailer brakes were applied.
