  • Cannondale Habit 2 - This hardtail from Cannondale was just recently announced. Today we take a first look, weigh it, measure the geometry and talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly. I love reviewing bikes under $1500, and this one has some great features for the price. Which features are your favorite?

So I've had a Walmart bike for a couple years and just rode around my block mainly. Went to my local bike shop about 2 months ago. They recommended this bike and a few others (price variations).
I ended up going with the habit ht 2. First, the paint is absolutely stunning! Light vs dark shade pics make it appear two different colors.
But for budget friendly, at least get a dropper, and some decent parts.
I went from a 20 minute super casual ride, to trails and can't stop! Already put in 131 miles this month!!! Great bike, got some complaints. But, I'm sure me being new to trail rising and real bikes, is probably the real reason lol.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I have been!

I'm glad to see The Advent X being spec'd on more bikes. Like you, I've got it on two higher end builds and when I do frame up builds, it's what I use. Diamondback has a new bike coming out and it is specc'd on the entry version, but they went with an NX/SX eagle specc on the next tier up. I would have used it on both and saved a lot of weight and better performance.

This looks like a really good bike for the price. I have two Trek Roscoe 7's. One is teel and one is black. I like them so much, but this Canondale looks real nice. I don't even know if my Roscoe 7 can handle a 29 x 3.0. Steve do you know if the Trek Roscoe 7, 8 and 9 can handle plus size tires? I am currently using the stock 2.6 tires. I like them alot. But wow, look at this Canondale using 3.0 tires. That is nice. Perhaps, the longer chainstay allows for the 3.0 tire.
I bought one of my Trek Roscoe 7's for about $1,899, then I picked up a second one for $1,649 so I can ride with others who may not have a mountain bike. Plus, Two bikes also provides for spare parts.
But this Canondale is sweet. I like the nice geometry too. I would upgrade it over time. That is what I will do as my Roscoe's need parts. I already have Ergon grips and orange pedals on my Teel Trek Roscoe 7. It comes with the Recon Silver RL which works fine for me, and I am 240 or so lbs. I just put the fork psi up to 153 psi. It is good. It can handle up to 200 psi.
But I do not know about the Judy. It might not handle my 240 lbs. like the Recon Silver RL can on the Roscoe 7. So if I had that Canondale I would upgrade it lots of good parts, but I would wear out the stock parts first or keep them as a backup. The problem is that dropper might get replaced before it wore out.
So I probably made the right choice with the Trek Roscoe 7 in a large size. I have long legs so the dropper is fine on the Trek! It works smoothly enough for me.

I purchased this bike, and I’m not sure if I’m going to keep it. The internal cable management is horrible, especially where the cables exit near the handlebar. I thought that the plastic port covers were actually screwed into the aluminum of the frame like Specialized often do, but they actually screw down a small cheap piece of plastic that is supposed to act like a clamp on the inside of the frame. The port cover design is very brittle and will likely break within the first year on both sides. I tilted my bike upside down to hang it up, and I heard something slide down towards the fork. I removed the fork, and found a piece of black plastic near the headtube. It took me a minute to figure out were it came from, and it turned out to be one of the plastic pieces that is supposed to seal the upper cable port. Prefabricated holes or a rubber grommet would have been a much better idea, and would be much less likely to break within the frame. And if these pieces brake, I’d imagine that they wouldn’t be easy to get from Cannondale. In addition to this, my rear brake cable was also routed incorrectly like Steve’s, and this was purchased from a REI store. I also noticed that there wasn’t any lube used on the headset. It was bone dry. Outside of all these little issues, it rides fine, but Cannondale needs to look at their quality control, and I don’t want to have to deal with the cable port covers routinely braking due to poor engineering.

Only at start of 2023 I switched from my old fashioned faithful but scetchy 26”xc ht to 29”. Chosen a Kona Hei Hei cr fully and enjoyed everything but the fear to cause a frame damage.
Half a year later I had upgraded wheelset, drivetrain, handlebar and dropper, mostly out of curiosity if that would make the bike even better. Btw I am a bike mechanic.
Then I decided to have an an alu hardtail that could have the obsolete parts of the Kona, just as a backup bike. Got 2nd hand “cheap” Planet X Jack Flash 29 and a Fox 34 130mm fork. Made my “custom buid” with it. Only a few testrides later I realized that it was my favourite over the Kona!! It has quite the same geo as this Cannondale Habit HT eg 65deg ht 445mm cs, steep sa and it really is a capable comfy do it all mtb!!! So I have some proof now that your reviews are solid and spot on. Thanks for all of yr efforts and all the best with yr health recovery!

Love the huge stack seriously. For dropper I’d probably try external 190-200mm I’m 6-3/4”, 32 N change inseam. I’d buy the lower spec to me it seems better wider wheels. And I can put that goofy fork on my 90’s geo bike and at least it’s air the higher spec no.
Rear 180 rotor cant tell if it’s on a spacer and is 160mm mount. No biggie and space front to 200mm. Then bomb the bike. Exciting to see this hard waiting for these two ride reviews.
You look like you’ve lost a lot of weight not to be offensive I’m super happy for you. I struggle with addictive personality and self worth I attend CR at church. Wish I could get all the riding in you do. But I’m okay with my local SanTan mtn. Bike park, hawes, and gold canyon was fun. So for me to see gain in a fellow brother this makes my day thank you 🙏.

Cool bike!! Reminds me of the Twostroke, with the stays joining with the top tube to make one straight line.
Comparing this to a BMC Twostroke AL 2, which does not come with a dropper, I think the BMC is a better value. What do you think?
Also, check to hear if the fork knocking is still occurring when you remove the damper knob. For some reason, this eliminated the knocking on my 2021 SID fork.

Dang. I'm pretty interested in this as my first mtb especially with that cherry color. But that dropper situation is really annoying and I would like to see the $1500 version come with a bit nicer fork. If this rides good might have to buy one. Even if it rides bad I might still buy one then canibalize the parts to build up the new 2023 Ragley Big Al frame because I think that would be cheaper and more convient than buying all the parts on my own especially once I recoup some money from the frame, fork, and dropper that I don't want.

I always wanted a "Beast of the East" back in the 90's when I first saw one. When Cannondale came out with the new version several years ago in blue, plus tires, and a Lefty Fork, I was trying to get one, but was unable. I hope they revive the name and come out with another version.
My hardtail came with a 130mm dropper and it will fit a 170mm from what I measured and used the compatibility calculator on PNW's website. So when my current dropper fails, I will be getting a 170mm. I think bike companies put one size to "fit" all because they buy bulk and get a discount.

Giant doesn’t typically make their bikes available to review, just do a YT search and you’ll only see reviews from people who bought the bike. I bought a 2021 29/2 and I think it’s a great bike, but I’m no expert by any means. Giant unfortunately gave the 2022/2023 models lesser drivetrains than 2021, but the frame is for sure a great platform to upgrade.

So I picked one of these up a few weeks ago on the REI bike sale for around $1150. For $1150 this bike is a steal. So Steve is dead on with the problems. I never really been bothered the difference in a 120mm vs 150mm dropper but on this bike it is the first thing you notice. I am not sure why but the geometry wants a 150mm dropper. The fork actually sucks. I am going to spend 300-400 next year on a new fork. But that will still be only around $1500 in on it with an upgraded fork. The drive train is awesome. The brakes are good. It ships with good wheels. I love the geometry. I am 5'8 and a medium really fits well, I had no problems on a couple flowy trails right out of the gate with it. Need to go out and tackle some harder stuff but I dont think they will be a problem.

@@Jose-sy1je I think REI has its bike sale in August. I would say components wise this is a better value than a Roscoe 6. iirc, the Rosco 6 has an older geometry than a Rosco 7/8. You hit everything box that I was thinking of. I'm looking at the Habit 3 and in my opinion, its a lot better than the Habit 2 but at the same time isn't, as I'm looking at the price and spec differences on both I would recommend changing out the forks as the Habit 3 has a Suntour coil and the Habit 2 has that Judy which just a small correction isn't a 32mm stanchion fork it's a 30mm, and also the dropper feels cheap and the drop length between the sizes is to short. But also looking at the sheet the wheels are decently big change, the Habit 3 has a i25 rim with Shimano cup and cone hubs where the Habit 2 has a i30 rim with cartirdge bearing hubs. Just some things to be looking at if you are looking at the 2 different models but overall both are solid.

I think that it is great that you have this site but wonder why someone would buy a bike from a shop and simply not talk to the folks who work there about what they want/need? It would seem more logical to do that especially if the shop will service their bikes. I certainly mean no ill will towards you, but building a relationship with a bike shop, car dealership whatever it is that someone is looking for makes more sense. Thanks for sharing!!

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  Před 10 měsíci +2

I'm all for people doing that. However, I've seen far too many people steered toward what was in stock rather than what they needed. I've seen 5'6" riders end up on L bikes because the shop didn't have a medium to sell them. I've seen people wanting a hardtail and coming out with a 160/170mm enduro bike because the shop didn't have any great hardtails. Not all shops are evil, there are some amazing shops out there. However, a trek dealer is only going to recommend treks, even if a trek isn't the right fit for that person.
