One thing he left out is the starting goalkeeper pretty much always wears number 1. You’ll never see an outfield player with that number.

I always chose 7 or 9 on my youth soccer teams but when I was on varsity as a freshman in high school, I had to pick last so I just picked 21. After I told my mom, she told me she wore 21 when she won state in track and 3 of my great uncles all wore 21 at the Olympic trials. I've only worn a different number one season since then.

Neymar actually wanted to give the 10 to Messi but he refused since Neymar was the 10 for the last years and is his friend. And the 10 became "the 10" after Pelé made it iconic, before that the 10 wasn't as it was after him (and he didn't choose this number, it was by chance, just like Garrincha wore the 7 and it became iconic for Botafogo, the club that he played)
I remember when i was like 12 yrs old playing football they gave me the iconic number 7😂 bro i was scared the whole game thinking i didn't deserve it and i was right i sold so much in that game😔 i still cringe about to this day thinking about it

I never even once wore the numbers 5-11 because of the pressure. I only wore the 9 once n fumbled big time but when I wear 12.. I play a whole lot better
He failed to talk about the cases when a club will retire a number because it was used by a legend of the club ,AC Milan nr4 as an example.Also yeah in the urly 90's when i grew up i understood what players play based on the number but today that isnt the case generally.
Just a note, AC Milan nr 4 isn't retired, number 3 for Maldini and number 6 for Baresi are
when a player wear number 7 10 and 9 people watch out for them because clubs always give that numbers to their best player's
when I was younger I was #10 and I wasn’t even midfield/forward, I was straight up a CB, but I did play mostly everywhere except winger and keeper😂🫡
I always wore 2 or 3 because I played right and left back.

In my club growing up number 3 was associated with the center back position who played the best. I was fortunate to wear that number my last two seasons. It was a huge deal. Myself and the other center back (before he graduated) almost came to blows over it.
It's really like that in most sports because if a player changes numbers the companies that sell the jersey's lose a bunch of money in product, either that or the player has to pay for all that product like Christian Mccaffrey did with Carolina Panthers last season...

I would always have 13 which is a strange number for a striker as it's typically given the reserve goalkeeper. Just remember being shy during my first childhood game and waiting out for all the kids to pick their numbers first and i took one of the two available numbers and stuck with it 😂
I always wore number 14, except for my time in one club where I was assigned number 5. (I was a left winger).
Back in the 90s and 00s in states there was an AM sports radio. I believe it’s 580am, but they use to endorse one of the top players for certain clubs in the region. So as opposed to them wearing their traditional number they would wear 58 for the season. That’s why every chance I got I would ask for 58.
Also in Mexico your players usually wear 3 digit numbers. So if you’re ever watching a Mexico game and u see a player wearing a 3 digit number just know he’s probably 16-19 yo

Ideally the lower - higher numbers follow from defensive - attacking players. But yeah a lot of younger or new players start with higher numbers and have to earn a starting numberz
The guy forgot to add another reason players wear high numbers is because of the year they were born, started by Ronaldinho when he wore the no.80 at AC Milan

As a defensive midfielder or a stopper when i played football my numbers where. first 3 years i had No4 then No5 for the most part of my career about 6 years then i had No14 then moving back to my home country for the last 2 years i got the No23
In the Mexican league the youth players coming up into the first team wear numbers in the 300s . So a lot of players make their debut wearing those shirts, but they usually only have it that first season they’re with the first team
90, that's mine, wear it for football for as long as I remember
Shirt numbers usually carry a lot of sentimental value, like u can wear a number for a dead relative or a time where something important happened in ur life. For me, i wear 18 because i scored my 1st important goal with that number and ever since i just feel nore confident witb 18 on my back.
39 was my number but never got to wear it. I had 6/12 in Basketball and 11 in football
I always tried to wear my lucky number 11 when i was at school ...but if i was in goal i picked 22 because its double 11
And when i manage teams on FIFA or FM i always retire the numbers 12 and 13 ....13 because it is unlucky, 12 because the 12 member of the squad during a game are the fans

Actually neymar offered the number 10 to messi but he rejected it and went back to his old number 30 which i think is from ronaldinho 10+ deco 20=30 some number usually have background stories like this sometimes u can stumble upon random yt shorts talking about their origins which i find pretty cool

when a team is numbered 1 to 11 which ya dont see often its kinda a boss move saying we all know our positions on the pitch and in the team and these are the best 11 we have plus as a club were organised enough to do this withthe logistics from transfares and youth team members moveing in and out of the team
