Libby, I’m a wife and mom of 2 children now grown, but we’ve never had a dishwasher. I also have General Anxiety Disorder and worked full time while completing first a College Diploma and then a University Degree - so our lives were busy - just like yours. I stumbled on something years back ‘cluttered home = cluttered mind’ - and have used that as my golden rule ever since. If I could clear a surface or even one small space and keep it that way, it made all the difference. Especially in the kitchen where there was always so much STUFF. I know you love your big dish rack, but can you imagine who bright your kitchen would be without it blocking part of the window. Also, even if the dishes are clean, they are still staring you in the face. Yes, it will take more time to wash and put them away, but try it a few times and see if it makes a difference in your mood. It sure did for me. I used to leave my dishes drying in a rack and once I took that away, the whole kitchen looked cleaner and brighter. This is by no means a criticism of your progress. You are truly an inspiration.

I always realize that when my home is cluttered or messy, everything else seems off, too! I've been working a lot on Decluttering and didn't even think about the dish rack. lol I could definitley give it a shot. Thank you for your suggestion!

I've had times in my life without a dishwasher, including living in a camper with a tiny, single sink. My system was to do utensils and silverware first because I could fill the sink a couple inches and not have to reach into 6" of water to fish them out. Plus, little stuff is tedious and that got it out of the way, and in the drying rack I had, the silverware could be put on the bottom and everything else stacked on top, but there was no place for them if you did all the bigger stuff first. I'd add more hot water each time I started to wash bigger things, and it would keep the water from ever getting cold. After utensils I'd move on to flat stuff like plates, lids to containers, and sheet pans. Add more hot water and wash shallow things like containers and pans. By that point I could tackle big bowls or pots because the sink had enough water and much of what I started with would be dry enough to put away to make room on the drying rack. Once I had a system I didn't mind the dishes... maybe because it became a game of tetris or the systematic approach kept my brain engaged in the process and not wandering and thinking about stuff that made me worry or be anxious. I also find that the extra 5-10 minutes to dry and put crap away was well worth the time because it made the job feel done, the room feel clean, my heart feel lighter, and then when the first dirty dish went in the sink, it didn't feel like the whole pile was dirty, if that makes sense. Like how could I wash more dishes when so many are still sitting there. Where a clean sink and drying rack might encourage you to wash a cup after using it. Another trick I recently learned is to run a sink of soapy water when you start cooking a meal. As you finish with bowls or pans, utensils, etc put them in the water, (along with any cups or stuff from earlier in the day) adding the plates and silverware after the meal. The worst of the greasy, baked on, splattered stuff has been soaking while you ate, so its easier to clean and if you can tackle the dishes meal by meal it hopefully won't get so overwhelming. These things have helped me. Maybe it'll help you too, especially in your new place.

Days like today make me appreciate my mother. She has no dishwasher a husband and five children and we had dinner every night. I only had two and a dishwasher.....I can't even imagine what kept that woman going. But I tell ya...a dishwasher is just another place for dishes to sit.

You’re definitely not alone in this struggle. Can I just say how proud I am of you. Getting up and tackling mess when dealing issues is a huge accomplishment. I have mental illness and tackling one small thing can lead to amazing results. also decluttering has allowed me jobs to get done so much quicker. ❤

Hi, I too got overwhelmed until I got rid of extras. We are a family of 3 so we have 3 plates, 3 cups, 3 mugs, 3 forks, 3 spoons, & knives. This forced me to do dishes after each meal and we no longer have dirty pileups. You could keep a box of extra dinnerware for entertaining only but I wouldn't. If we have unexpected guests we use disposables so I can spend time fully focused on our visit. Yes, everyone looks at you as if you're beyond crazy, but I feel as if I'm crazy like a fox, dare I say genius. I hope this helps, I know it has changed my life!

I love this concept! I did this with silverware until my 8 year old started to sneak them out 🤣🤣 It definitely helped, though!

I agree with this 100%. Even as a family of 2 it's still the bare minimum dishes. It helps and I even have a dishwasher. Lots of people on CZcams have dishwashers that still pile up dishes and clutter. It's all about keeping things to a minimum. Like that one thing trending years ago where you take an item and ask yourself "does this bring me joy" and if not it gets tossed or donated.
I have had times in my past where I just piled stuff upon stuff and I had to work through it to get rid of a lot of things.

That dish rack caught my eye, thanks so much for sharing the details! And for sharing this super relatable content. I have never had a dish washer my entire life 😩 My home is constantly messy so I really appreciate the transparency. Subbed 💗

I started watching your cleaning kitchen/house videos starting with the first one you did. I love them they are motivating! About the dishwasher, they do help BUT I find myself doing them by hand most of the time because you have to wash/scrub the food off first, then put them in the dishwasher. When their done some of them still have food stuck on them so then you have to wash them by hand again! So if you get one make sure all the food is COMPLETELY scrubbed off first! Thank you for another great kitchen cleaning video! ❤❤❤❤

I hate having to do dishes also. My kitchen doesn’t have room for a dishwasher. I do want to save up though for one of those counter top dish washers. That’s a nice dish drying rack 🩷

When overwhelmed why not use just paper plates and cups that go straight to the bin. Then only dishes till your through this period would be knife forks and cooking utensils. This keep the routine but makes it lighter while your overwhelmed and helps lighten the emotions some days. Xx

I think it’s so much easier to do the dishes right after I eat, cause in the morning it’s harder to face and everything’s sticky and harder to clean.

    You kick ass gal!!!!!
Doing anything is better than nothing and you did a whole lot.
Also do you not like wearing gloves to wash dishes bc I’ve found I don’t dread doing dishes as much when I have gloves.
I prefer the dollar tree dish gloves over the Walmart version(fit and price 🫧🧤🧤🍽️🫧)

Girl let me tell you the dishwasher is it all it's cracked up to be. I recently was gifted one because I cry knowing I have to wash dishes .. literally everything you said in your last video about forks, knives yes I hate it ! Like you said the words tedious and monotonous is exactly how I feel! Truthfully though I still have to rinse the dishes wash them and I hate it! So what do I do now? I wash them by hand then I place them in the dishwasher to dry 🤣 like air dry. They need to make one that collects garbage and scrubs like no tomorrow I think then I would be happy about a dish washer 🤣.
