Combat is physically strenuous, and to make sure that their Armed Forces are operating at their fullest potential, militaries around the world require precise standards for the health and fitness of their servicemen and women.
Sometimes, however, the healthiest and fittest individuals are not always available, and the armed services are forced to recruit those who are not at their peak physically.

One of the strongest and most "fit" soldiers I know was a 350 pound Pacific Islander. He was about 300 pounds of muscle covered in 50 of fat. Had a 300+ PT score the entire time I knew him. Looked like a competition power lifter but could sprint a quarter mile (probably why he passed/maxed his run, cause he would jog the whole time then all out sprint the last section). He ended up getting out cause he was always riding the tape line. Sometimes hed pass cause of his neck, sometimes hed fail cause of his waist, so eventually he just said screw it and got out

I gained 15 lbs during basic and AIT training. Luckily most of it was good weight as I was doing a lot of strength training but still, it was very difficult to trim down the fat when I wanted too. The morning PT wasn't enough to really burn any calories. Add in having to wake up at 4:30am every morning, not being released until 5:00pm and you just don't have much free time. The chow hall is a whole other story, it's incredibly easy to overeat unhealthy food.

Alot of food your are exposed to in the military isn't exactly low calorie. There's alot of meat, grease (S.O.S.), and fast food culture. Plus, alot of military jobs are support jobs working desks most of the time. Combine that with the diet I mentioned and for some people it's a challenge to keep weight off.

This is actually amazing because I have an airforce mp friend who joined around 2014 and was underweight and actually ate junk food to put on weight on base and it worked for him. Not as much as his recruiter had hoped but he did gain weight. The irony is that both of us as airmen bonded over video games and neither of us have ever been obese.
Idk what it is but we are only two. I'm not active but I still do push ups.
My friend has always been a light eater and that's why he's underweight.
It seems like the habit of a lot of junk food paired with constantly unhealthy lifestyle associated with sedentary things like video games or *CZcams VIDEOS* causes the u.s. population to gain weight unintentionally.

But not everyone in the military is a field soldier, fitness tends to be less of a priority, not to mention harder to maintain, when your job is sitting behind a desk making sure the USS Chesapeake gets enough fuel oil and canned tomatoes. Just pointing something out, the "fat" gladiators from what I've heard was a bit like the strongmen or sumo wrestlers of today. Sumo wrestlers may look fat but they only have about 25% body fat and are crazily muscly underneath the fat, 25% is right at the limit where you become overweight as a man. The average American has a bit over 45% body fat, meaning obese.
Further more, sumo wrestlers has most of their fat right under their skin, which is why it's so visible. But it's the deep fat around your organs that's really detrimental to your health, that's the fat you get by not exercising.

I’ve got a BMI that’s slightly below the minimum, and I know a couple guys who are over the Maximum, yet we were allowed in since we were perfectly able to do everything. And after a while the PT we do does make your BMI go into the optimum range.

The grains are what helps to pile on the pounds, the fats are there to make it palatable. People always get carbohydrates' and fats' roles reversed.
For anyone who would like an explanation, you simply cannot eat enough fats to become obese, as you lose appetite quickly. Carbohydrates activate a hormone called ghrelin which increases appetite. That's why many fast food places offer free refills on soda and give fries (or similar) alongside the main meal; to encourage you to eat more food. It's also the reason why there's always room in your belly for sweet dessert!

Unless I missed it, Simple History failed to mention that relaxed physical fitness standards have led to obesity in today's US military. Fast food restaurants have been on military bases well before the 21st century, many service support MOSs (ie: legal, personnel action center, and etc) required sitting behind a desk for hours well before the digital age, and service members were still able to remain in shape. It's all about the PT. Even when I was a paratrooper in the 1990's, I loved eating Whoppers for dinner, and I was able to maintain my weight at 150lbs and run 2 miles in 11 minutes due to regular PT.

I used to be a recruiter for the USMC in the late 2000s. When joining the US Marine Corps, there's a certain level of height and weight standards acceptable. The point is to give the Drill Instructors a sound enough foundation to start with in training recruits.
I did have guys in my Boot Camp Platoon (1993) that the Corps considered overweight Diet Recruits. What they ate was controlled even more than others. You just can't go out and grab a quick bite to eat at McDonalds when you feel like it. Still, even though these guys were Diet Recruits, they were running 1.5 miles, then 2 miles, then 3, etc. Exercising, marching, doing all the same training as everyone else. 12 weeks of physical training and heavily controlled diets, these guys lost a lot of weight.
But again, a foundation was needed. They were heavy, but they could still run on Day 1 of recruit training.

So you'd take you shield, guard yourself while you got up to the enemy line, and try to tackled through like a freight train. And when you were on the defensive, it is a lot harder for a 5'4 starving farmer conscript to get past you in the same way.
Of course, whether or not you can maintain that weight is a different issue. The idea of supply lines is fairly modern. As in "around the time people started used muskets" modern. So the only people keeping that weight are the upper ranks.

Honestly, whilst you can, it would be an idea to lose weight. I'm trying to join the British Army, and need to lose a few more Lb's before I'm in the Yellow (straight to Basic training) mark on the BMI chart, before I apply. I also need to reduce my run time by about 20 seconds still.
Basically, I understand the struggle to lose yhe weight and Basic training will be more difficult if you're overweight.
Look up so e pf the things you'll do in Basic training, but also remember that you'll be trained to meet the later stage stuff when you go.

I was overweight and could not accomplish the physical fitness criteria when enlisted in Malaysia Military Cadet (i dont know why they accepted me even though i am unfit). After a month i lost 10kg of bodyweight. After 3 months, now my BMI is normal. From 92kg to 80kg. To those overweight and obese people, dont give up, you can do it. Just trust the process and push yourself.

Although obese soldiers were rare and usually a liability, in wars it was not uncommon to see men who weigh around 220- 250 pounds, and in fact this was almost ideal in many jobs, as body mass often helps with carrying heavy objects. This is why most world record holding weight lifters are slightly fatter and more muscular, rather than slim and with 8 pack.

    • @smileyeagle1021
      @smileyeagle1021 Před rokem +50

Also, worth pointing out, that an extra 20 pounds of fat works out to an extra 70,000 calories that soldier has in reserve if supply lines get broken and they lose access to rations. If 20 pounds of body fat isn't going to hinder their physical mobility, that sounds like a pretty big asset.

@@muffinconsumer4431 fat people *are* (relatively) strong. their muscles are buried in their fat.
Remember, Fat people must not only work against the normal loads/resistances of a fit person, but must *also* be able to lift/move their extra pounds, meaning their legs and shoulders are usually strong.
what fat people _lack_ is stamina, which fit people usually have in excess. they tire out after just a few exertions, while the fit people are running circles around them.
fit people will often wear a weight jacket or ankle weights to simulate the extra resistance fat people work against to *further* strengthen themselves.
