I’m mark, from the north of England. I make all of my own templates and do all of my own research and edit all of my own content with keynote, and occasionally iMovie.
Criteria for being included is just elevating their career before the end of the 70s. If they sang and was active then they can be considered, but if they sang in the pub in December 1979 then they won't be. I'm sure you understand

It's taken almost a month of hard work so please watch through once you are here. who's your favourite classic singer?
I’m only up to Tony Bennet at 3:35 so far but I’m going to say Prince. Loved the song when Doves Cry ( do not even know the name ). 😆. I’m sure I’ll change throughout of course.
Tom Jones….you don’t have to be beautiful to turn me on 🕺
BOB MARLEY MAARN...lol
Nice long video ...I miss Marc Bolan ..I have all the T rex music on cassette obviously..
The Chairman Frank Sinatra and Elvis
WOW, they were all LARGER THAN LIFE! So many famous stars under 5' 6"
Yes there are a few
True that!
It’s always disappointing when you see a “star” in real life and they are small.
@@krissmith9361 I bet
Same with many of the great classical composers.
Beethoven, Chopin, Stravinski, Bernstein....all under 5'5"!
In my mind, I always imagined Art Garfunkel at over 6 feet. Still at 5'9" he towered over Paul Simon.
I get so many comments of this nature
Me too. I've always put Simon around 5'6", so I assumed Garfunkel to be 6'1".
Ssme with Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers.
Paul Simon is borderline little person.
Yeah, Art Garfunkel is just normal height. Paul Simon is just really short.
Some absolute shockers. I think Stevie Ray Vaughan at 5’5” might be the topper.
Sone say 5’4
His keyboard player Reese Wynans (who now plays with Joe Bonamassa) is 6'6"😁
@@sandragriffiths9692 ooh
I saw him live, and would have guessed was 5'7" or 5'8". He was wearing boots with some pretty tall heels, though.
@@testodude nice
A very comprehensive list. Many surprised me. I'm a 5' 9" woman and most of my favorite male singers are so short in heighth, but have a big presence on stage. Well done
Thank you so much
Me tooo...I am tall, and was amazed at how short some actually were.
Everyone looks taller on TV.
I didnt know Mick Fleetwood was 6ft6". That was a surprise.
@@tubester4567 obviously that’s his peak. He may well be smaller now
I knew Prince was short but I didn't realize just how short. Confidence really has an impact. Wow.
Still a legend
Confidence and cuban heels
He always wore like 6 inch high heels...matter of fact he injured his hip from the years of dancing in heels...The Dr.s got him using strong pain meds and being a Jehovah's witness he never used and had zero tolerance...so so sad
@@mopacwestgate didn’t know that
My mom said she was at a club in the 80's and everybody started saying Prince was there, people pointed to an area and you could see people parting and looking but my Mom couldn't see Prince...
I thought Art Garfunkel would be taller but I guess my frame of reference is him standing next to Paul Simon.
A comment I get a lot
Yep. Me too. Stand next to a midget and you look like a giant.

Love the backing track - and the fact that you got such a great spread of musical genres and time periods. It's been a great trip down memory lane. Thank you!
No thank you. I do it for you guys 🙏
Definitely an eye opener. I would have thought Little Richard was smaller and a lot of the others taller
This is fascinating!!! For some reason, I just picture these people as being big & tall!! I was particularly surprised at Billy Joel’s height. Thank you for putting this together.

That's because he hides his height by sitting behind a piano. 🎹

I think it's seeing people on TV or on stage from hundreds of feet away, everyone seems to be tall. I would have guessed most of these people around 6 feet tall, other than Prince and Ronnie James Dio.
@@DataWatch. I thought Neil Sedaka was 5' 7" tall
This just astounded me...
The ones I thought were tall were actually short, and some of the taller ones I thought were short weren't...

I can't get over Billy Ocean being only 5' 3"! Big voice out of such a little dude!

@@kbtube8125 yea good shout

I too had no idea he is so short! I can’t help questioning the accuracy of this compilation. Stevie Wonder is 6 foot?
Really interesting video. I'd never really thought about the height of these guys, but I was surprised at how many were so short.
The Righteous Brothers really threw me. I didn't realize "the tall one" was just 5'-8".
Maybe it’s just that the smaller one was so short! I get lots of comments about art Garfunkel being only 5’9, but it’s because of his sidekick
Platform shoes maybe ?
Me too on the Righteous Brothers! I saw them when I was 16 (I'm 76 now, so 60 years ago) when they were just starting out. I always thought Bill Medley was much taller.
@@sherrellbennett1333 it’s just what all the data says. I suppose it’s possible

I always love these videos; they are so much fun. There were many surprises along the way. I am surprised that so many of them are under 5'9". It is difficult to tell how tall they are from a picture or being onstage. Thank you for all of your hard work!
I wish CZcams agreed with you 😏
Yes, a lot were Italian (short), the Vikings were big guys but they didn’t sing!
Maybe that drove them to find a job where they stand above everyone on an elevated platform
I will never forget seeing Steve Marriott at some club in South Carolina and being shocked at the voice coming from that little dude. He was tiny but his voice was unbelievably powerful
Suddenly I’m getting comments about him. Been doing this for over a year and suddenly now 🤔
@@DataWatch. Marriott was one of the most talented vocalist England produced in that era . I prefer his stuff with Small Faces whereas most people here in the United States are more familiar with his work with Humble Pie . He was pretty drunk and stoned that night too but he still is the most impressive singer I've seen in person . I've seen BB King , Robert Plant , Maynard Keenan , Rob Halford Layne Staley and others but that was in an arena . Standing just a few feet away while Steve Marriott sang ' Whatcha Gonna Do' was breathtaking . Every person in the club was mesmerized
Something has suddenly made his name more popular here
Marriott was incredibly talented.
Elvis without a doubt, he didn't just have the height, he had everything!!!!
Always and forever!

@@jaustill237 You assumed Phil was short? That surprises me. He always looked ultra tall, especially given he was so slender.
My biggest surprise was Randy Newman. I thought he was shorter than that, but then I suppose I have probably only seen him sitting at a piano which doesn't give you many clues. When he came out with his hit "Short People" I thought he was sending himself up. Interesting and well put together clip.
Thank you. I dare say he’s shorter than his peak height today. But to be fair he’s fairly old

It's obvious a lot of research went into this; thank you for posting! My favorite singer is Robin Zander of Cheap Trick. He can sing anything. What a fabulous voice!🎙🎶
Somebody commented about him. Sorry he didn’t make it
Thank you for your time and effort 👌 put into this video. It was very interesting to see how tall these singers were. The Temptations were all 6' +, that's one of the reasons they looked so good 👍 in clothes and were terrific singers too.

Vocally, many favorites here. But since this video featured their height, please include Tony Hadley (of Spandau Ballet), who is 6'4" if you do an update in the future. Thanks! Nice range of artists & performers! Appreciate your hard work. Great job! Was also surprised by Freddie Mercury's height. I had always thought of him as 6 feet tall. Sometimes seeing them on stage gives the illusion of added height, along with a strong, confident performance.
Wow how tall would that have made Brian may lol! Hadley is in part 1 of my male singer series. It’s my most viewed video
This is so informative and entertaining. I love the presentation and the graphic layout. Excellent excellent excellent 👍
Thank you so much! I appreciate you 🙏
Thank you for doing this. I was glued till the end with some surprises too.
Thank you so much
I have to admit that quite a few of these heights surprised me! Some I was "sure" were short (like Barry Manilow...6 feet? Really? I always thought he was tiny!) And some I was shocked at how short they were! Cool video!
Yes it’s true! Thank you 🙏
No no no. Manilow is famously tall and lanky. He's thin and long. His caricature that he uses of him sitting at the piano exaggerates him as tall and lanky with long legs that won't fit under the piano. Manilow, on the Tonight Show playing musical director for Bette Midler when he was a nobody, he plays the piano from a semi-standing position where is uses basically a bar stool and just leans on it and he looks iconically tall. You are associating "aggressive and brutish" with tall. Because Manilow is refined and a nice guy you are surprised to find out he's tall, and because Billy Joel is straightforward and coarse you are surprised he's short. Gentlemen can be tall too.
@@TheLarryBrown has nothing to do with what I was thinking, but that's interesting.

You've done an outstanding job here. Very impressive. I was very surprised by Roger Daltrey coming in at 5'6. He seemed so much smaller seeing him on stage back in the '70's. I’m a 6’3/4” guitar player, I would tower over some of these singers. I had no idea how many of the legends were under 5’5” tall! I think that people whose growth years were the 1930s-1940s ate much less protein...much less, period. Evidence of this is the height of Japanese increasing with more protein in their diet. Additionally, Great Britain was under rationing well into the 1950s.
The other thing I'd point out is that many of the singers shown here that are below average height are Jewish, and Jewish people as a whole tend to be shorter.
Really terrific video!! Appreciate all the hard work you did to bring us this compilation. It's very good. 😊
You make some valid points. And not to mention all the stuff that’s pumped into food these days.
I appreciate you, thank you so much 😊
Very interesting-thanks and great job!
Thank you so much 😊
I absolutely love this, and thank you for mentioning my distant cousin Marc Bolan, only 2 inches taller than me.
I have to ask though, are you absolutely certain about David Bowie's height? I once stood 6 ft from him and I'm 5'3, and he was a tiny man. I find it difficult to believe he was just under 5 ft 10 inches.
It’s just what the data says. I don’t think he looks short in pictures 🤷♂️
I think it depends on the sources. Like someone's age, someone's height and maybe weight are sometimes reported incorrectly. Vanity might be in play. Maybe someone doesn't like the person they're managing or promoting,etc.. I've read a few books about Bowie and at least one put him around five ten. Then again, you saw him. Stick to your guns.
@@DataWatch. that's why I was so utterly surprised when I stood 6 ft away from him, the reason he looked tall was because he was very thin.
@@kathryntitus9647 Yes!...being thin definitely contributes to having a taller countenance...I was amazed to find out that the members of AC/DC were so short!...like 5-3" on up to Bon Scott, who seemed taller by comparison--but he was only 5'8".
I have a couple interesting takeaways from this:
Michael Hutchence, who is my favorite singer, is often compared to Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger. And he happens to be the same height as both of them, 5'10."
Second, I knew Marc Bolan was on the shorter side, but he made it work for him. If he were over 6', he would look ridiculous as an androgynous glam rocker. I happen to think he's quite adorable.😉
Third, I was surprised that SRV, Billy Ocean and Bob Marley are that short. I'm also surprised that Little Richard, Barry Manilow and Stevie Wonder are as tall as they are. I agree w/those who said it might be because they sit at a piano.
Fourth, it's amazing to me the reactions to Robert Plant's height. Most say he's taller and one said he doesn't give off tall man's energy. Well, I think he does. And I heard Jimmy Page thought he was the bouncer when came to hear him sing because he was so tall. My mom, who isn't the biggest Zeppelin fan, always refers to him as the tall blond one. My cable provider has a classic rock channel that plays Led Zeppelin and shows various photos. My favorite is one where Bonham is sitting, Indian style, JPJ is squatting next to him, Jimmy is leaning over them and Robert, wearing dark pants, a shirt that actually fits for once, a necklace and his curly blond hair, is standing next to Jimmy w/his hands behind his back. I dare anyone to tell me, who looks at that photo, that he doesn't look over 6'. If I had grown-up in the 70s instead of the 80s, Robert Plant would be my favorite singer instead of Michael Hutchence. But he's my second so that's the way goes. Timing is everything🤣🤣
Well said! I think many people have seen plant in later life and just assumed because he’s shrunk a bit (which I think he definitely has) that he was never over 6’. We know the truth 😉
Super cool vid thanks!
No. Thank you 😊
For the next list.....David Carpenter, Fred Schneider, Henry Wayne Casey, Tony Orlando, Burton Cummings, Marty Ballin, Gino Vanelli. Thanks for the INTERESTING videos!! Love 'em!
PS...Im (not) surprised by the number of comments of offense that their faves are excluded, despite your clear statement that this is a pre-1980 list of lead singers or solo artists.
A couple more....J. Geils, Peter Wolf, Tommy Heath (Tutone)
I’ll bear them in mind
It may have been mentioned before, but Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet is 6'4". We saw a performance by Kip Winger and met him afterwards. My wife is 5'6" and she was easily 2 to 3 inches taller than him, so I'm guessing he's about 5'3". He put on a really good show too!
I guessed spandau started in 1980 although I could have been wrong. Obviously I used names that were active before the 80s. He is in part 1 of this male singer collection, about 6’4 thereabouts yes
Such an eclectic & broad range of singers with a few surprises, at least for me. Funny how some people appear to be so much shorter or taller than they actually are.
You are not the first to say. Thank you 🙏🏼
@@DataWatch. Really surprised with Errol Brown, always thought he was short.
@@Mustaine1ify never! He’s pretty long I think when I look 👀
@@DataWatch. It must be those high waisted slacks. 😂
@@Mustaine1ify haha yea
Great job compiling this data. My favorite classic musician was Jimi Hendrix (he still is!). Bob Dylan is my height, cool.
He is very cool lol
So interesting, that virtually no one ever mentions how relatively short Dylan is!
Hypnotic video. Kudos.
Wow thank you 😊
The Ozzy Osbourne photo is hilarious...is that from high school? LOL
Awesome job!!
I just tried to get as many old pictures as I could. Some were tough, ozzy was one of them. Unfortunately some were unattainable so had to use newer photos. Thank you 🙏
@DataWatch
How tall were the members of Earth, Wind and Fire and The Isley Brothers ?
Happy that many underrated musicians are mentioned here
Glad I managed it 😁
Great work from start to finish.
Thank you 🙏
Great video and you are a producing beast. A little disappointed you did not have Ronnie Van Zant from Lynyrd Skynyrd. He’s 5’ 7” I believe? Lots of people though!
I couldn’t actually find any height info for him. I was going to estimate he was 5’7 but then was struggling to find a decent full length image so just decided to leave it. Apologies
Wow, camera shots sure makes these artists look so much taller than they really are! 😳
Yea I agree
Surprised that Jagger is taller than Bowie - Jagger looked like a tiny thing next to Bowie in that video they did together- cover of "Dancin' in the streets "
There’s nothing in it
I once saw one of Jagger’s costumes at the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame Museum. It looked tiny to me.
@@Nicksonian he was pretty slim. And those outfits fairly tight 🤣
He only weighs like 130-135
@DataWatch Mick is no more than 5'6'' and that is pushing it. He routinely wears lifts.
There's an old saying. "Good things come in small packages". Excellent editing!!
Thank you. I did my best
Great work, thank you
No thank you 😊
STEVE PERRY..no comparison when it comes to “the voice,” but I’m 5’4” which makes me PERFECT for Steve!!!
Popular guy definitely
Another Steve lover! Yes girl, no comparison!
