  • This week on Justin Hawkins Rides Again...the podcast we are discussing the theme of criticism and critique. How does this affect artists and is it even necessary. Jenny May also grills me to see how being in the music industry and having my work criticised and reviewed affected me. How did I handle negative comments from fans and critics about my music and my voice? What is the purpose of it? Is it detrimental to creative people? Please, tell us what you think in the comments.

Critique is a way to improve (if it's a constructive critique). Other completely different thing is the free spread of hate. I mean, if you dislike something or someone, just don't listen to it or watch it. There is no need of being disrespectful.
About how to handle it, I would consider the constructive ones and with the rest I would make compost 🤣

For sure there is an important place for music critics as long as 1) They are honest and fair-minded and 2) Their work is in service of the music itself and not their egos. If we take a young kid, perhaps a 16 year-old who has heard the name Bob Dylan and wishes to explore his oeuvre then how on earth is he meant to get started? Would we have him listen to all 40 of Dylan's studio albums? Holy-moley, that would be quite a task just to become acquainted with a single artist. The critic then is the voice of wisdom who can lead you to what he thinks you are after. The critic is like the tour guide who can facilitate you on your journey, say on a day out sightseeing in London. Some people prefer to take their own journey, which is fair but if we are honest, life doesn't always afford us that kind of time. The problem is that the critic can sometimes leave Buckingham Palace out of the itineary because he has a personal problem with a constitutional monarchy or just show you the places that he likes to hang out, such as his favourite Whetherspoon's pub or his local bingo hall. The critic is the arbitrer of quality, but who monitors the quality of the critic himself? Who watches the watchmen? With the internet, the critic is no longer the god of old who could make and break careers on a whim and I say that is a good thing.

I remember a past interview with Prince when he said why he didn't like music critics. It's because most of them aren't musicians themselves and have no right to judge him since they can't really understand him or the creative process the way another artist would. I think Prince had a good point there.

You could argue that you only need to be a music lover to have something to say about a song or an album. I myself am only a drummer if you count hitting tables or steering wheels playing along my faves. Still I have an opinion about the music I listen to. Rock music is mainly made for the layman, not only the connaisseur I guess.

I can only speak for myself but I assume most musicians, like me are unknown and we can't even buy a listen from anyone. When someone comments about one of my songs, even something mean (you know youtube comments can be vicious), I'm actually pretty grateful that someone even found my song because most of the time it feels like I'm shouting into the abyss. Do that long enough, and you learn to appreciate criticism. It never feels good that people don't like what you did, but it indeed feels better than being ignored.

Jenny, I've noticed that we share a similar tendency when it comes to seeing ourselves on camera, like during FaceTime or other instances, where we can't help but be concerned or fixated on how our facial expressions appear when we say talk. You come across as a genuine and unique individual, and I genuinely believe you should give yourself more credit and focus less on those who don't or might not appreciate your offerings. "Those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter."

I guess if you change anything about what you have created based on what someone else says you risk loads of people who would have liked that thing, disengaging or not getting what from they would have done from it. That thing one person says you should change about your work, another person would absolutely love. i've been wanting to do a song, black metal, in some rare language that just sounds weird and evil, nobody will have the interest or guts to translate it, so they'll never find out it's a song about how nice puppies are. criticism after that might be a tad difficult to take seriously, it's almost as difficult to criticise as a banjo cover of her ghost in the fog, it'd work perfectly reworked like that.

      @CassiniProjekt Před 11 měsíci

I've put stuff out there and it's been criticized, you're right, it does feel like an attack on the very essence of your being because that's where it comes from. Originally I thought my music was the shit, over time I came to recognize I wasn't hitting the same mark as The Beatles, Queen or The Darkness, which was reinforced by some rather negative reviews on submithub, Metal Hammer and elsewhere. So now I oscillate between thinking my music is shit and alternately still the shit because sometimes I think, no one else is doing that or going there.
I think we're in an overly critical environment especially where it involves production. Many iconic songs would be savaged nowadays because the vocals were "a bit out of tune" or the guitar tone was "too thin". A lot of modern audience expectations result in sterile produced music rather than something alive with mistakes in it. I mean if you listen to Road Rage by Catatonia, the vocals are definitely not in tune in places but the delivery is amazing and by not quite hitting those notes, there's way more character. Ditto for some Jimi Hendrix or Beatles songs, there's timing issues, wrong notes etc they're far more alive than the smug, filtered "professional" recordings of today.

Can anybody else relate? When I enjoy the music of an artist I don’t care what other people think about it I listen to it for my own joy. The meaning of music I picked up in my childhood transformed over the years and of course I listen to the music my mum used to talk about but I refused to listen in my teens 😂

Music writing and criticism once served a crucial purpose. Even the most minimally viable music rags helped you find out about music and served as a filter to the firehose of records coming out each week. Even a negative review in a magazine with an actual editorial staff told you SOMETHING. Now we live with 1,000 firehoses on full blast and zero tour guides. It's been super.

I've written a few songs lately that bounce between major and minor chords and it sounds good to me. I've worked hard on them and I'm not going to change them now. I think Beato even likes the major-minor thing. Also, I'm not smart enough, or musically adept enough to play any ninth chords.

Tell that to the last Swedish girl i talked to about her music. I told her the bass needed work, it sounds to weak compared to big EDM acts. Use a spectrum analyzer, and so on. I mean the sound was thin, nothing wrong with the music overall. She called it Gaslighting (ofc) and that was that, blocked and gone! I tried to calm the situation down by saying even my mother critics my stuff that way. Cause i told her to be brutally honest about the music/production, ha ha!

Another excellent podcast... Thank you. As a musician, you should expect to be criticised, particularly if you place yourself and your works in the public domain. It has happened to me, and while it's not nice to hear, it has to be accepted, because different people have different tastes and opinions. But it doesn't mean you have to agree with it! Musicians are mostly emotional and sensitive souls, revealing the depths of your self. It's natural to react to criticism with anger, but then, after reflection, it really doesn't matter what some critic thinks of your artistic talents and performances... No one is ever going to like everything. Your fans will always tell you the truth.

I particularly enjoy the dynamic between you and Jenny. I don't know what the relationship is beyond her just being your producer, but there seems to be a genuine affection there that comes through. It's enjoyable to watch.
I feel like the music industry and technology have really changed the way we interact with music. One of my favorite bands is The White Stripes and I know all of their albums beat for beat to the point that when I hear one of their songs in the wild, so to speak, I can actually sing the beginning of the next song on the album, because I listened to those albums nonstop back when listening to albums was the way to ingest music. But with streaming services, it feels like albums now are far less relevant than they used to be. My playlists are full of single songs from bands whose albums I don't even own, I just like those songs. I wonder if that part of the music business will eventually shift to a more single focused one rather than an album focused one. Will the concept of an entire recorded album, released all at once eventually become obsolete in favor of recording and releasing a series of singles? How would that affect musicians? (I know very little about the music industry.)

I struggle with critics as they state their opinions as fact. When it is purely their opinion. I see it all the time on cooking programs like master chef where the critic will not like a dish but state their opinion as fact when someone else may love the dish. It’s the same in the music and art industry. Discussion is something different and yes there is nothing wrong with discussing as long is its understood that it is your opinion you are putting forward. In my opinion this is the also the biggest problem on social media, everyone has a “i am right you are wrong attitude”.

I remember watching a Jonesy's Jukebox interview with Ace Frehley, the lead guitarist of Kiss, where he said that he'd stood there playing all these riffs he'd come up with to the other guys in the band.... There was a short silence amid a row of blank faces, after which singer Gene Simmons said "They're not very good". :0/

A comment for Jenny: I was the same as you with singing and only just realised that I was pre judging myself and dismissing other people’s praise as a form of self protection. Essentially rejecting myself so that others couldn’t. Just something to think about because it creates more fear and anxiety.

Justin's voice.... I have just had a preference ever since my teens in the 1980s for the higher voices, so it was really quite inevitable. That voice, together with the music, was just the perfect combination for me. My friends didn't agree with me then, and they don't now... I am listening to The Darkness in my lonesome self over here 🤷‍♀ I've tried! Their loss...

Why can’t you go to concerts? I’ve been going to as many as I can for the last two years. I finally got to see Alice In Chains, and I saw Wolf touring his first album (at a House of Blues, which is so much more fun than the stadium concerts). I’ve got two concerts coming up this year, and often check for more from my favorite bands.
Speaking of Queensrÿche, I was lucky to see them 5 times in the 80s and 90s, including their last tour with Chris DeGarmo. I caught one of his picks, too. That was at the old HOB in Hollywood, and the only time I didn’t see them at a large venue. Mindcrime and Livecrime were at the Forum.

Criticism is subjective but can be helpful. I use it when I take inventory of my strengths and weaknesses and determine if the criticism makes sense in terms of whether I need to make changes vocally when I perform. By the way, you can always find something "wrong" with somethiny you look for it. In the case of Aerosmith, they are great and probably it waa for the best it was too late to change the song with the "incorrsct lyrics" ...smh. Great interview. Jenny has awesome hair. 1:47 Also dry stone wallers. My grandfather was a dry stone waller. I used to go for walks with him in the Rhondda Valley, and he'd say "You see that wall, little Will?" (Pointing at a dry stone wall that stretched off into infinity). "I built that wall." Then we'd stop and have our sandwiches, which were always cheese and pickle.
I can't say that my grandfather would have thought much of your music, but he wouldn't have criticised it either. He would probably have said something like "Well, well, well...". :0)

Like Jenny said, for all the positive comments there will be some negative. Some people just can’t help themselves, and it’s always the ones who couldn’t string a song together if their life depended on it. The silver lining is all press is good press, it’s better than being ignored as that’s worse.

Critical Feedback is necessary because things aren't just made in a vacuum without a feeling on something. Especially in art, people will and are encouraged to have different takes... artists can choose to take that feedback or ignore to their benefit or detriment... it's a gamble.

It is safe to say that criticism has been directed at individuals, ideas, and actions for centuries.....
Throughout history, criticism has played a crucial role in shaping society, challenging prevailing norms, and promoting dialogue and change. From philosophical debates to political dissent, criticism has been instrumental in fostering intellectual growth, questioning authority, and pushing for progress..... except NME in the 70s

I just stick albums in my CD player and drive around for ages as that way you listen to it how it is intended to be listened to and if I leave it in for a few months I get a really good understanding of the album.

Your discussion about lyrical content was interesting. You know that Pantera song, Cemetery Gates? People are constantly criticizing those lyrics. Evidently, that song was inspired by Phil's childhood friends who committed suicide. He wanted to write about their loss as a way to work through it, but he didn't want to write it about them, specifically, because he thought it would be disrespectful to them, and also because he wanted it to be more easily accessible to people, so he wrote it about a guy who lost a girl that he had built his whole life around. I think it's a beautiful song and sentiment and story, but some people don't think so.
