- How to replace and wrap new wood boat trailer bunks with carpet the correct way.
I used pressure treated fir from Home Depot, sanded all edges down, coated it with a polyurethane, wrapped and staples the carpet around the 2x6’s. Be sure to always use stainless steel hardware so they doesn’t rust. The method I am doing here to install eliminates counter sinking a bolt head into the wood, instead I am just screwing 1 1/2 inch hex head stainless screws into the wood on the trailer.
From what I've been learning you should not use any kind of varnish or sealant on pressure treated wood. I bought some of this spar varnish after watching this video to use on a new bunk board, but then talked to the owner of a boat repair business of 40 years who said not to put anything on pressure treated wood. A knowledgeable friend told me the same thing.
Great job. Now I just have to wait and put my boat in the lake for a couple days so I can redo mine. Thanks.
Look at your lumber and put curve facing up, support the boat better and last longer.
Great explanation!
Doing mine this weekend
Sweeeet. Thanks
Great explanation. Can I just cover an existing board that has worn covering?
The staples won’t go through both layers of carpet, besides the wood is probably rotted underneath the old carpet. Do it this way and you’ll have a professionally installed boards.
I’m curious if you kept the staples off the side of the board that the boat runs up on or not?
What do you do with the boat?
