My first experience in ZG was even before I dinged 60. A random guild was short on healers and they decided to invite my 59 resto drood in. Good times.
I remember we often had lvl 58-59 priests in ZG.
Same here! was lvl 59 when I went into ZG because guild needed 1 more body. It was my only raid before TBC came out.
Same here! Was so excited when i got invited, understood jack shit!
Why not just spell out druid?
@@LeRoyBoxley434 why care? Seems you understood what he was saying.
i'll never forget when my friend came knocking on my door, panicked, asking me to help him set up ventrilo for his ZG raid that was just about to start :D we ran down the block over to his house and i helped him, then stayed and watched the raid too :) good times :P
"The genius of Zul'Gurub" has Zul'Aman villan on thumb nail. Lol
sometimes, when something looks cool, you just cant pass it up XD
@@TipsOutBaby well zuljin is a cool villain. Lol
@@TipsOutBaby eks dee
mandokir never get's any spotlight :(
@@naquan59 hakkar
loved the use of music & visuals on this one! Great vid
Zool ga roob
especially the smexy troll tanking vael at the start, Shakimando, that guy is the best!
Another fun fact about ZG: It was the first raid to introduce the concept of "Hardmodes". If you went straight for Hakkar before killing the priest bosses, he would have several additional abilities and buffs that would make the fight more challenging :D
Also, shoutout to the TL boys
On pservers can you tank Hakkar on the edge of his platform and avoid all mechanics of the fight? Because that's all I remember about Hakkar from back in the day lol
loved the video but why so short? i feel like you couldve spoked from passion for another 7 minutes!
The TL cats thank you for using some footage from our raids :3!
woo!
Should have spent more time on boss mechanics, as they are dramatically different and more interesting than what had been seen in the game before.
To this day my friends and I will never forget something truly spectacular that happened during one of our runs of ZG back in Vanilla. We were trying to bring down High Priest Venoxis. As we went on we started realising that while the boss was getting pretty low on health, we were all falling one by one. Everyone was out of mana, casters were using their wands and we all began to panic as it looked like we would inevitably wipe. We fought on until the only ones left standing were Venoxis and a single female troll priest player. She was out of mana and there was nothing she could do so it seemed like hope was lost...and then it happened. As Venoxis moved towards her, she jumped back and with a single swing of her staff...Venoxis went down. We were all screaming in triumph on skype and laughing like hell at what had just happened! xD I love ZG....will feel amazing to revisit it in Classic!!!
❤️❤️❤️
So the boss had 10 hp and there was nothing she could do? xd
@@nielsliljedahlchristensen4924 ssshhhhh I wrote it for dramatic effect ;) haha
@@GianniCumbo nice one :P
Love stories like that, I love to hear 'em. Here's mine - I'm not a vanilla guy but some years ago my guild went to down Onyxia, the dragon in Swamp of Sorrows. The swarm of baby dragons wiped us except me, even though Onyxia herself was very nearly dead. I was battling her, and of course my guild mates are texting, "yea just wipe. Yer health is nearly gone dude". Then I killed just one more welp and I LEVELED! DING! Full health. And though I very nearly died at the end, I brought down Onyxia! I still have PTSD over that one. ;p
Loved ZG. Rolled a 99 to beat a guildies 94 on the swift zulian tiger. My only decent roll in vanilla!
Jesse Allen how did he take it 😂
had similar experience, was on a pick up group during tbc, the zulian tiger was one of the main goal of the group besides sight seeing and experiencing old content. fortunately the raid lead was honest enough to play it fair. everyone moaned and bitched when i hit a 99 roll, some even suggest the raid lead keep the mount for himself, but he/she was an honest person, its a shame i cant remember the toon name. They even checked the heal meter to see if i truely deserve it, but being a seasoned zg farmer (for this mount), my heal meter was like 50% higher than the 2nd (its a pug).
But yeah that was one of the moment i still remember after like 10 year away from wow. haha. totally GLORIOUS.
For the next few months after that raid, i am still getting random ps like "how is my tiger? have you fed it well?" that sort of message :D
my friend lost a 90-something roll on the tiger! :D that was on light's hope though :P
One of my guildmate told me that when he entered the guild in WOTLK, he was tested on Ulduar and after they successfully killed Yogg Zero, he became a actual member of the guild and thus was allowed to roll for items. He got a 100 roll on Mimiron's Head...
If there was one time to get that one time roll, that was then my friend!
excellent video. ZG brings back so many memories. I can’t wait to go back in Classic...
This video was on point 👌, loved the epic melodic orchestraic music in the background, made the video even better, great as always tips
I remember i gathered the materials to summon Gahz'ranka, our Mages freaked out when the Tome of Polymorph: Turtle dropped. Just little things like the rare drops and the fact that you could summon these additional bosses made it different and interesting.
damn im so hyped for classic especially for that Raid *.* my favorite one
Great video my dude, always pristine quality!
Your videos are always on point. Best vanilla content on YT!
I raided in Naxx and even had Thunderfury as a rogue. It didn't stop me from *passively* getting exalted with the Zandalar Tribe. I ran ZG that much. I loved it so much.
Amazing and informative vid. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Germany
I remember when ZG launched. We were well through BWL already and almost on farm. It did help full gear gaps and was a truly unique style of raid instance. We were somewhat upset it was 20 man only, but rotated members in and out. It was extremely fun!!
Yes. Absolutely, Yes. I did a good bit of vanilla raiding, completing most everything until Naxx, and I have to say, some of my very best raiding experiences, to this day, took place within the original ZG. This raid had it all. Everyone had a place here- a purpose, a good time.
Now for the lament: How is it that Blizzard could create compelling content that lasted from fresh 60 to the cutting edge end game, all within one raid with one difficulty back then, but now have to pump out 4 difficulties of each raid that becomes obsolete every patch, all in the name of reaching the same breadth of audience? When will they see it is never worth trading meaningful experiences for cheap experiences? I never set foot in Naxx during vanilla, and that was okay with me. Why? Because when I logged in, even though that wasn't the content me and my team were working on, there was a plethora of other meaningful content that was available. I didn't have to see naxx to have a good time, every single time that I logged into World of Warcraft. And it's because of places like Zul'Gurub, a raid available twice a week, or the original Deadmines, SFK, SM, UBRS, and Scholomance. Asmongold has said that what sucks about BFA is leveling to 120 felt like de-leveling to 100. Well, I would add to that. The new expansions take the World of Warcraft, and shrink it to the Island of Warcraft. Cheap experiences.
Well to be brief, part of the rationale is that the playerbase demographics changed greatly over the years. That aside, the merger, the turnover in staff, and the market changes influenced how Wow is designed today
@@Fullmetal6 A lot of players asked for most of the changes as well and blizzard bent to a lot of them. Granted some things needed to change but a lot of the quality of life changes hurt the games community aspect which to me is the heart of the game. This is why it's not liked by most veteran players.
Also you can't forget that players in Vanilla were, um not as educated as they should be. I knew people that raided with gear that was not appropriate for their class or spec for that matter. The horror story of just about everything is a Hunter drop did not come from no where. I saw hunters with spirit gear on. It was TBC that started to separate the wheat from the chaff. The half-a$$ stuff that got by in vanilla was struck down hard in TBC. That didn't mean that the crappy players went away, just that they got educated or they didn't raid.
@@keny46 True. It seems that blizzard has, for a long time now, had a need to make WoW more streamlined experience that would cater to the needs of people that don't want to play WoW for extended amount of hours, but veterans remember fondly the community and immersion that was included in the effort of making raids or just forming a group of people to tackle dungeon content. Old WoW was about your community, your guild, your friends. The dungeon finder tools demolished all that.
Two words! "Workforce reduction" at any cost...
Management often looses sight of the experience and know-how they loose when casually laying off personnel or failing to hold on to their best employees.
Zul Gurub was simply fantastic!!!!
Thanks Tips for some good and old memories! I recall if you had max fishing you could get a raid spot or atleast get a nice pay for coming there to summon it. Added more fun for ZG =)
This is my favorite video of yours, so far. I loved ZG in vanilla!
5 man ZG and ZA in cata were actually Quite hard, even unbeatable for many groups, if you tried to do them without raid gear.
@@tb559 your comment makes no sense, ZG and ZA were reworked in cata. What has wrath got to do with it?
Hey, I'm enjoying all of your vanilla videos! I was a beta tester (and played live for many years) and these really brings back some great memories... Some very great times were had in vanilla.
I just wanted to say, you might have some fun (and get some views) if you reviewed quests/grinds revolving around the different weapons. A few that stand out to me (from acquiring them when they were relevant) would be Quel-Serrar, Sulfuras, and the Lok'Delar/Rhok'Delar combo.
P.S. I still have a Bijou in my bank somewhere lmao. ZG was a plethora of fun content.
It’s an awesome raid instance. Can’t wait to get the Hakkari Warblades with my Hunter! Alternatively one Hakkari Warblade and the Fang of the Faceless, which is one of the best Hunter Melee Combinations in WoW Classic.
My first Raid in WoW, two weeks after BC came out. Nostalgia overload.
Nice video tips, very articulate and descriptive!
Didn't have time for the big boy raids back in the day so ZG and AQ20 were always the highlight of my week
ZG was my first raid to lead on progress level, I just loved everything about it.
The feeling, the mechanics, the bosses and of course the visuals.
mon, who doesn't like da trolls?
Love these types of videos man
ZG is why I'm going to be playing classic. most of my nostalgia comes from that place
Had both grasps on my Hunter, the proc was always fun to watch.
Your videos make me so excited to level a rogue.
Still my favorite raid. I got my first ever DKP item out of here and it was the other of all (for a rogue). Fang of the Faceless. I used to get up at 3:30 in the morning to run this every week because my group was based in the Philippines. Great memories.
awesome stuff. you deserve more views for content like this
Awesome video bubba. I am surprised that no one else is weirded out by the pronunciation “Zul Guroob” lol
I am.. lol
I am too. I had to dislike because his improper pronunciation showed that he never actually did this raid.
"Zul Guroob" is the proper pronunciation. Zul'Gurub from Gurubashi trolls, Zul'Farrak from Farraki trolls, Zul'Aman from Amani trolls. Unless you pronounce Gurubashi like "Guh ruh bah shi"... you're not being consistent. They pronounce Zul'Gurub in the Zul'Aman trailer.
@@Minorou that's how I do pronounce gurubashi tbh. The way I pronounce zul gurub is the way everyone pronounced it in vanilla.
@@wondersie I won't deny that's how most of us pronounced Zul'gurub back in the day; I certainly did back then too. But I change my ways when I find out the truth. Just because a pronunciation is popular doesn't make it the correct one; just like people's pronunciations of Kul Tiras or Goldshire is often different from the official one. (Though to be fair, Blizzard changed how Kul Tiras is pronounced over the years.)
I actually never did ZG during Vanilla, but I do remember my guildmates who did run it speaking very fondly of it.
Why on Earth hasn't another game like this been made again, though? I understand this game probably took decades to make, before it was released in any capacity. But still! I don't understand how these developers can look at how much money they can make by dedicating themselves to such a fantastic MMO, like WoW Classic, and not try to do it again. I'm hoping that there is another world being created, right now, that will bring us back to a similar Vanilla experience, but with totally new content. To me, Classic is great but nostalgia is like using old ingredients for a fresh meal. You can only make the food taste so good.
Hey Tips, great points here that you bring up that I've never thought of. However it sounds like alot of what you discussed were already mechanics seen inside dungeons, is it possible blizzard look to successful dungeon mechanics to create ZG?
Hey Tips! Love your content. Do you know if any fresh private servers will launch before classic is out?
Set to release summer 2019, can't wait!
ZG was my all time favorite thing about WoW. I was a resto Druid and I'll never forget finally getting the Will of Arlokk. Staff looked so badass with my moose antler helmet, hahaha.
Never did get the Tiger Mount though. Apparently I never will. I haven't played since mid Lich King. Every time I log in everything is so different that I get overwhelmed and quit.
Zul farak was good enough for me. Only got to see gurub once way back in 2008. Good stuff.
My best drop out of ZG? Polymorph: Turtle skill book. Loved people's reaction to the cc'ed turtle. Hell, many hadn't seen poly: pig.
GREAT VIDEO !
Tip, where do you get all of your great footage? I have to record myself playing the game to get mine for my content. Is there a database I am not familiar with?
Fascinating video. I love these time machine videos you make. Glorious stuff!
I'm pretty sure lot of the aerial footages were shot in retail, in the uninstanced ZG
THE MOUNT DROPPED!
loved it!
ZHC was my favorite trinket especially when it could be combined with ToEP. Popped those with arcane power for insta-win.
indeed as healer (myself holy priest) i entered in my first raid ever (not sure maybe even UBRS was first) as L58 and got in love in raid healing
BRD,Lower/ UpperBRS , DIRE maul , stratholme , scholomance are awesome dungs
UBRS was a 10 man instance tho, not a raid.
@@tootzy-the-roll technically it was raid .... once when you fill up group up to 5 members you need to turn group to raid group if you want to get 5 more for UBRS
I know it was a ten man *raid*, but it was more of a ten man dungeon/introductory raid.
Simply amazing!!
Shoulders enchant were awarded via reputation on exalted, while head/legs you could get on honored
Is this the infamously toxic readleader dude?
Huge fan dude! especially when you charged right in, died to the boss then yelled at the tank to "TAUNT!!", after the other raid leader said beforehand, to give tank sometimes for threat lol.
I always figured it was "Raid ZF" since the outdoor dungeon aspect already existed there.
Many old players coming back for this. I love this raid. Turtle Mount here I come
last night we were clearing bosses with 10 - 13 ppl in the ptr..
I never got to raid these . I can’t wait for classic
Love my tiger, I still remember I won it on a 91 roll on my undead priest
By far my favorite raid i cant wait for it to be brought to classic
We used to run this and AQ20 every sunday, good times.
love ur videos. always
Zulian Tiger is definitely in the top 3 all time mounts in WoW, excited for another chance at it.
I had it in My Gnome mage, hope i can get it on My Gnome warrior now in classic
ZG and AQ20 were my favorite raids in classic.
Tips what's your professional background? You are smooth as silk in every single video. Extremely well structured thoughts and high level vocab too. Even on classicast where it's somewhat off the cuff.
Is your name from a Simpson episode? The one that Bart throws an walkie talkie in the well?
@@anthonybocklandt668 lol yeah
Agreed, Blizzard should give this guy a job!
Man crush detected.
i'm always curious what macros are behind those keys at 4:46
Got my first epic in ZG in 2005. Was a 1-handed Mace World Drop called Hand of Edward the Odd. Will always remember that.
My first epic back in the day was some mail chest armor from a random drop of a troll near the entrance to Zul Farrak. Thought I had scored big but realized soon it was not worth much. The name of the item was Icemail Jerkin (BoE, 20 Armor, +3 agi or int, +18 Sta +17 Crit, +7 Frost Resistance, req lvl 39). Was hoping to sell to a twink due to the level but after trying to sell it on AH for 3 days I just gave it to a friend or something I honestly don't remember. Some might go crazy on me now telling me it was worth a lot. Not on my server it seemed and I was not trying to get like hundreds of gold for it, so imho not overpriced and I was the only one selling it. Think I tried to get like 1) 45g, 2) 40g, 3) 35g but no luck.
First one was from zul grub when u combine the two swords it made a epic two hander
Zul furuk I mean
Well it was something like that
I don't know if you mentioned it but it was the first raid to have an open floor plan. MC and BWL the first two dungeons before it had a pretty linear path you took either through a cave or a dungeon.
Hakkar's wand and cloak were still used in Naxxramas
I miss old ZG, i hope once they bring classic back they find way to re-work old zones, raids, etc back into live game.
If you're planning to play a priest or druid, the Edge of Madness trinket should be your #1 priority! It's the best Item in vanilla wow for either of these classes.
Only if you play healbot.
Still got my original Zin'Rokh :)
Sweet af let's go do it right now.
I have fond memories of this raid. Bosses were hard as hell, especially in a time where merely dodging fire patches (or in this case poison patches) was challenging to most of us
The thing that most people seem to forget about "The Old Days" is that most people didn't have a slick gaming computer that could comfortably handle the drag a 40 or even 20 man raid creates. So noticing you were standing in fire was a bit more challenging when your fps tanks to 10 or less and people are running in place or teleporting around.
I remember we had a guide on our forums to help people with graphics settings so they'd be able to raid.
I know people who had to do most of MC looking at the ground. Oh the good old days.
Not sure what the purpose of this rant is other than to lament about the computer I had in college.
So what gear do you need to do ZG can you use pre MC gear...?
ZG even stayed relevant during TBC with unique recipes from rep, yeh ZG was one of the best raid in wow, very cool design, rep, recipes, mounts, enchants, had it all.
I still ride my tiger and I'll never forget the fellow mount farmer that got the raptor on the same run Uhhg!
cant wait for doing ZG in 2019!
While ill always remember the 40 man raids and first time downing bosses...The most fun I had raiding in vanilla was with my guild in ZG and AQ20.
Best 3 mounts în wow: Swift zulian Tiger, anzu from shetek halls and bear from Time run în zul aman
Even though i never raided ZG, I started playing WoW back in 2005 few days before ZG was released.
That Cliffhanger
I never really thought about how good Zul'gurub really was
ZG was also the first raid to wipe the entire of orgrimmar :'D
I was a lucky boy back in the days, rolled a 100 on that sweeeeet ZG tiger
Magnus R. Lucky bastard
I'm running around on my original ZG raptor I got 14 years ago, farming old raids, and this video pops up in my suggested videos. Perfect.
I cleared everything when it was current content between vanilla-wrath (except sapph and kt at 60) but ZG remains one of my favorite raids from that era. As a druid, I was SO fucking stoked to see green for once (yes the rp of that mattered to me lmao) but I actually got to actively use hibernate and soothe. It's something extremely small and simple, and I wouldn't call CC interesting.. but having endgame content I could use my super niche abilities in and be rewarded for just feels so right.
Unplanned saturday mornings with the boys clearing zg and eventually aq20 just to dick around in was some good times.
I also have the "fishing pole" from Gahz'ranka still in my druids bank too. Gives me the warm fuzzies of finally having a bear druid weapon
ZG will always be one of my favs
The tiger is still the coolest mount in the game imo. I might have to get classic just for another chance to get it.
It's funny for that us, Warlocks at least, ZG a 20 man raid, marks the completion of
BiS for both SM/Ruin and DS/Ruin trees. Bloodvine offers IMMENSE potential and output
unparalleled bypassing more expensive both in matters of bidding or material costs of either
classicdb.ch/?item=19165 or classicdb.ch/?item=14153 or classicdb.ch/?item=19897.
It's insane how a 20 man that actually can be run with lower than 15 if geared can offer so much.
Good vid. Can't wait for classic...
The hardest challenge in ZG was raiding with a stock UI and trying to see what the hell people were talking about in raid chat with all the spam of coins and bijous that people were rolling on.
we now have addons that you can set up to auto roll / need / greed or pass on all coins and bijoux, according to your raid rules. We often do all pass, with 1 coinmaster rolling need on ALL. At the end he divides them equally among all participants. But you can also use an 'all need' setup in groups where people don;t know each other
First time being in ZG I was LV58 Rogue getting summoned by my guild members because that night they lacked a DPS. now when I think about it, how desperate were they to keep it a guild run instead of inviting some random level 60 is kinda funny. I miss those days, and my guild :(
I ducking love zg and za. Tiger and bear still greatest mounts in retail.
Playing as a hunter in Vanilla was never more fun when you released the bubonic plague on your server and decimated everyone in SW/Orgrimmar. XD Thanks Hakkar
Zul'Gurub was my favourite raid dungeon ever.
"just like old times..."
And as always - bumper music!
The only way i enjoy wow anymore is by watching videos like this which remind me of how much of a joy the game was to play in it's prime.
On nostalrius, I was lvling in stv, got fucked at the nezingwary camp lots of times , a raid group was preparing for zg, some guys and I asked them to kill the gankers, they killed the gankers for about an hour it was glorious.
That outro music though. Ertugrul is the shit!
I was in a Guild called TL on Elysium
ZG was one of the best raids ever created, in this or any other MMO. I say this, by the way, leaving the mounts completely out of the equation.
The lore, the atmosphere, the layout, the fact that standard CCs could be used (not a lot of Saps going off in MC, fellas...) regularly, just the right amount of trash mobs, the token system, good voice acting...
The chance to relive the original Zul'Gurub is one of the biggest reasons I'm excited for Classic. Sure, it's gonna be awhile getting here; but it'll be worth it.
For those players who never ran it, prepare yourselves to have your standards of quality for what makes a good raid raised. Big time.
ZG was my fav raid in Vanilla.
Also my favorite dungeons in current wow
