- Snow Storm Hits the Farm - This week, we had our first snow storm of the winter. We move snow and talk about the sand bedding forestalls in our dry cow pen.
If you have any questions about this week's video, leave them in the comments, and I will post a Q&A video on Sunday if needed. As always, thanks for watching!

Happy Birthday Eli!
Happy Birthday Eli.
I must say every video I watch is great I really enjoy seeing day activities on a dairy farm keep up good work
Thank you!
Happy birthday 🎂
Your cows are nice and clean. They look good. 👍👍👍
Thank you!
You are the only one who even mentioned scc. I'm an old farmer I ask the others I never get an answer. Thank you
It's a little bit difficult to explain in a simplified way. I tried to keep it simple.
SCC is the amount of white blood cells in the milk. White blood cells will protect the body against all kinds of deceases. So if you have a high scc, lots of white blood cells the cow will have some kind of bacteria in her milk.
You never show any Hoof trimming? It must be a never ending job with that many cows Piet? oh en nog gefeliciteerd met je zoontje.
I'd to film hoof trimming in the future. Our hoof trimmer comes to the farm every other week.
Great video. Beautiful farm 🚜. Definitely need more cover for the equipment in the future.
Thank you! More equipment storage is on my list of wants.
I don't see brisket bars in the front of the stalls. Won't that be a reason cows where getting too far forward and having trouble getting up. It also would allow them to soil the backs of the stalls a great deal more. There also seem to be many cows perching --just front feet up in the stalls. They say that indicates cows are not comfortable in the stalls.
Brisket bars would've been an option to help guide the cows in the stalls instead of switching to sand, but I'm not a big fan of them. They can impede on the lunge space cows need to get up. Since switching to sand bedding, we haven't had issues with cows lying too far forward in the stalls. These cows were just moved from one side of the pen to the other and then back again to clean the manure alleys. They didn't have much time to lie down yet.
Happy Birthday Eli! Hope it's a good one! Hey Piet, do you prefer the bucket on the loader, a snow plow blade or a snow blower to move deep snow? I would think a snow plow mounted on an old pick up could move more snow than the loader with a bucket.
I prefer a bucket because it's more versatile. We do have a snow plow blade for a tractor that I'll use to move snow further away from driveways. I don't have any experience with a snow blower.
You do a great work. What is your herd average?
Thank you! Currently our cows are averaging 90lbs of milk per day.
Hi Piet , just wondering to what age do you keep the calves in the large white hutches for ?? ...... great vids by the way , would love to visit a place like yours one day
They are in the group hutch from about 75 days to about 90 days old.
So I know nothing about dairy stuff but growing up in the valley there does beet pulp have any nutritional gain or is it useless in dairy. Have friends that feed it to there beef cattle so just made me curious. New here so maybe you've covered it some where and I haven't seen lol. Love watching the videos.
Yes, we feed beet pulp to our cows also. We will feed fresh pulp throughout the beet processing season from September to May.
Is it manure tank you have beside the silages stak s
The blue trailer is a silage dump wagon.
i started following your videos lately and they are really inspiring i know you are busy and would really appreciate if you could answer my question on the dairy farm economics.
my question: what would be the size for a small dairy farm that would be economically feasible ?? like how many acres??
i have retired recently and love to work on a farm that ican afford to build it my self with minimum investment
thanks in advance for any tips and guidance
GOD Bless
Hi. That's a difficult question to answer without knowing many factors. Where and how you will sell your milk is probably the place to start.
A few months ago you were toying with the idea of raising your Holstein beef cross calves. Did you pursue that and if so do you have any feedback on that? Watching this video when you're talk about the sand our local dairy equipment dealer is going to start the install of our sand cannon monday. Looking forward to trying to reclaim 99%🤔🤣
No plans in the near future, but something I'd like to do at some point. It took us probably 10 years and many changes and upgrades before we had our sand separation system working like we wanted it too.
@@pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047 We have a150 ' sand lane now. Fairly labor intensive if you want a dry clean product to reuse but the main reason for going to the sand cannon is the amount of water it takes to get a good clean product
@Ken Vanderhoek hopefully it will work good for you! Will you separate manure solids from liquid also?
@@pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047 Yes. We've been doing that for ten years already. Lactating animals on sand. Remainder on recycled bedding. Very much like your farm, but not on the same scale. Milking 300 on 6 Gea robots
I am also interested in more videos on this subject.
How many calves do you put in the group hutches
3 calves in one hutch.
New to the channel. I milk around 300 in East TN. How many do you milk ?
We are milking 1600 cows currently.
How many cows do I milk and how many times a day
We are milking 1600 cows 3 times per day.
Sometimes they say that milking 3 times a day gives a bit higher scc
What do you think about that?
@@jansky7063 i don't milk cows i used to work on dairy fsrm yes i know that my comment didn't come out right i guess to answer your question sir it depends on what youre milking routine starts with
Just wondering do you guys need any help
We're not looking for anyone at the moment, thank you.
Happy Birthday Eli!
