One of my friends have informed me that I completely forgot about the fact that the production studio for Carmen Sandiego basically put the animators under crunch and never paid them. I even made a big fuss about it back in the day, but for some reason I completely forgot here.
So yeah; don't watch Carmen Sandiego. Crunch is awful and shouldn't be rewarded.

If this Optimus had been characterized as Gigantion Arc Cybertron Optimus (who had doubts in his ability to command but didn’t lack confidence in his men, and pushed through his insecurities to grow as a commander while maintaining a sense of wit) then he would have been perfect. The criticism of Optimus Prime is really spot on. I grew up with 1986 Transformers movies, and I remember seeing the first live action movie in the 2000's with my dad (A military man) Optimus always felt like... that battle hardened General who knew what was at stake, and always rushed in to save the day in those incarnations. He was strong, fearless, determined, wise in his old age type of vibe. In War for Cybertron, I got the vibes that he was immature, uncertain, confused, overly dramatic, careless (willing to sacrifice anything to obtain nothing) and overall not that great of a warrior. Its extremely confusing to have the leader of the bad guys portrayed as being stoic, strong, cunning and fearsome while the leader of good guys is a joke... a sad... sad... 3 season... joke...

I don’t think it’s even about a new audience, but it’s basic writing to explain why someone should care about the conflict. Like sure, they’re fighting for freedom, but they never explain why you should actually care about these characters or their planet. Where are the scenes showing the likability of characters, where are the scenes showing the consequences of the war, WHY these characters are doing what they’re doing (showing dead bodies of nameless repaints never shown before and never seen again DOESNT COUNT).

    • @DrLockdown

To add onto the “there lies the issue” segment, I freaking groaned when the show was advertised for the “fans of the G1 cartoon.” Exactly like how everything in the last decade was and is advertised
The franchise is 36 years old. Those who were 5-10 in 1984 are 41-46 years old right now. They likely introduced Transformers to their own kids who grew up with their own G1 with UT, Animated, or Prime. And all that they get are their dad’s transformers, but edgy now. Nothing feels like it’s for them or acknowledging them. Sure they have the SS, but even that’s gonna get filled with G1 next year with the 1986 movie subline
It’s the same problem with Pokemon. Constantly advertising to the kids in the 90s and completely ignoring kids of the 2000s and 2010s who came in later and enjoy the franchise but their favorite pokemon don’t get any love in the recent games

There was nothing shown to make us feel anything for the character, no tragedy, no big moment that showed him reaching his breaking point such as a betrayal or being forced to execute a defeated and unarmed enemy, nothing. I could never actually care about Megatron in this show which kills me because there are two common ways to handle the character, really delve deep into his humanity and the tragic story of the character like IDW Megatron(I cried for like 20 minutes straight when he told Ravage why he became an Autobot, I was bawling my eyes out), or make him a damn psychopath who is so much fun to watch because of how absolutely evil and insane he is like the High Moon Megatron. Yes those are my two favorite incarnations of the character followed closely by BW Megs in third place. But the show tries to do both and yet doesn’t succeed at either of them.
The second thing I disagree on is the Peter Cullen situation. What they did with the Bumblebee movie was messed up. They had someone do an impression of Peter’s Optimus, one that didn’t have the inflections and the small yet important detail right, animated the character around that, and then had Peter do an impression of that. I can never rewatch the Cybertron scene from that film without noticing the differences in the voice. And I personally think that we should be open to new voice actors for these characters, but Peter Cullen and Frank Welker want to reprise their roles as Optimus Prime and Megatron, they want to keep doing it, but they’re not able to. I personally can imagine Peter taking offense to being replaced by a Vine star. No offense towards Jake whatshisface because he does have talent, but imagine voicing a character for years, a character that you have an emotional connection to, and when you want to keep going, you’re replaced by some person who was popular on this internet thing. That’s like being replaced by a Tik Tok celebrity, I’d feel insulted if that happened to me. And honestly, if Jake is to take over the role of Optimus Prime he really does need to make it his own like Garry and David. And if we want it to sound like Peter’s the we just need to get someone who can mimic that. Hell I can do it! I don’t mean to brag or sound arrogant but Peter Cullen himself said that my Optimus Prime impression was really good. As someone who wants to become a voice actor I was almost in tears when he said that, it’s always amazing to receive that sort of encouragement and that’s why I stand up for voice actors taking on the role of an already existing and well loved character, because people are really harsh, just look at how people are saying the new VA for Claire in the Resident Evil 2 Remake sucks because she’s not as good as the original. I’ve had people I know say that to me and it’s soul crushing, so I try to stand up for others in most cases. But I’ll also criticize when necessary and Jake needs to make his own voice for Optimus Prime and if he does I’ll have no problem with him taking over just as long as it’s after Peter is done.
But I agree on everything else. The voice acting and direction was bad. The tone felt like Batman vs Superman and by that I mean a soul sucking experience that I never want to watch again, whatever happened to entertainment being made to actually entertain? The pacing sucks balls. I genuinely dislike the animation as it’s now been eleven years and we still haven’t topped Transformers Prime’s absolutely stellar animation. Oh and the kibble is stupid and I want to slap whoever made that choice. It may have worked in the UT because they literally showed you the transformation as advertisement for the toys but it still sucked, it sucked then and it sucks now. And the fact that Hasbro won’t stop sucking G1’s dick is infuriating. I love G1 but I also love other things in the franchise like the High Moon games which I’m so glad you acknowledged and even acknowledged the Planet X figures, I just got their Omega Supreme about a week ago and I love it. I’m definitely glad that Beast Wars is making a comeback although that’s probably because Hasbro found a loophole cuz it’s still in the G1 continuity or something idk.
But I think what bothered me the most about this show is that it was set on Cybertron and did nothing interesting with that setting at all. When this series was first announced I was so hyped and the main thing I wanted to see was a time before the war and how the war started. But the show never delivered that, in fact no Transformers show has ever delivered that. The only time we ever saw a pre-war Cybertron setting and the start of the war outside of flashbacks was in the comics. And that’s why I think Hasbro/Paramount should go with my ideas for a Transformers film series. It would start with a Megatron film that showed a pre-war Cybertronian civilization and see the downward spiral of Megatron as he tries to tear down the corrupt High Council led by Sentinel Prime as he suffers the lost of his best friend Galavar(the new BW comics wink wink) and as he is kidnapped and forced to fight and kill for entertainment in the illegal gladiatorial pits of Kaon led by Scourge(yes character reinvention but at this point we could use some of that) and this is where he meets Blitzwing and Soundwave as he kills Scourge and takes control of the arena and gains the support of Kaon and other cities in his campaign against the High Council, then after a fallout with him and Orion Pax, he completely goes off the rails and launches a full scale assault on Iacon, where he kills Sentinel and reveals that he never had the Matrix and was a false Prime, thus leading to the rise of the Decepticons.
Then an Optimus Prime movie as we see Orion Pax become Optimus due to his mentor Alpha Trion bestowing upon him the Matrix of Leadership, as we then see Optimus Prime rally together a group of Cybertronians to fight against the Decepticons, and eventually reclaim Iacon, and thus the Autobot faction is born. But I added this twist to the character where the Matrix is the core of Primus’ power and so to bear it you must have great mastery of your emotions. And that’s why Prime would constantly be seen as calm and rational as opposed to angry or depressed, because if he didn’t, the destructive power of the Matrix would be catastrophic and kill millions, thus having to keep his emotions in check, bottling it all up which is terrible when you have to make the hard decisions in war which is exactly what would happen and we’d see him lose control at several times throughout the series blah blah blah you get the idea.
The it would be a War for Cybertron film that wouldn’t actually be called War for Cybertron. And it would be a lot like the game but it wouldn’t end with them leaving in the Ark, that be the next film. So yeah, this could totally work if anyone working on this franchise actually gave two shits about the fans and the content they put out. It’s so possible to make Transformers content, especially films, that appeal to both new and old fans at the same time. If the MCU can do it then so can Transformers, if only DC got the memo.
Sorry for the super long rant there. I’m very passionate about this franchise and really want it to succeed.

I kinda didn't like Megatron or Jetfire characters. For Megatron, I felt like I was tossed a reason rather than feel the confliction for his upbringing as a miner and also I felt like to emotionally understand Megatron I need to read the comics if they were going in that sort of direction of his character. Also he didn't really have a charismatic pull like some other variations of his character or have a engaging dynamic between him and Optimus. For Jetfire, his hand chopping scene left a way too big of an impression for me to believe his character arc as someone who has been honourable.

I don't understand the idea that a franchise with an established world, characters and aesthetics has to become a whole different franchise in almost every aspect in order to appeal to a new and different audience. It's a point that younger Transformers fans keep bringing up and I believe that is because they were brought up essentially with spin-offs and alternative versions as their introductory media. Transformers has only made a legitimate effort to return to its roots in the last 3-4 years, but only with half-assed attempts with butchered budgets. But most younger fans immediately point to stagnation as the problem. Like if Hasbro produced any more Transformers-in-name-only media, but kept butchering the budgets, it would make any difference.
Hasbro isn't returning to G1 just to appeal to the safety net of the established G1 fan community. They do so because anything else they've done with the franchise, hasn't stuck. People outside the fandom think Transformers kinda stopped in the 80s-90s and then brought back with shitty movies for a round of nostalgic cash grab. There's a world of opportunity for storytelling in the world of G1, but also strong brand identity. I hope they don't start doubting their biggest franchise again just because a vocal minority in the fandom want it to be anything but itself.
As for this Netflix series, it feels to me like they're trying to overcompensate for the bombardment of shows aimed for toddlers that have plagued the franchise in the last decade. It occupies itself with ideas and plots that all come from G1, be it comic books or the cartoon. So, evidently, not anything that hasn't already achieved in appealing to kids. But it only has a limited time frame and even more limited budget to explore them. Therefore, all the fun campy pew pew stuff got thrown aside. And without the camp, in Transformers, the drama loses its weight. In order for the concept to work, it needs room to breathe. It's a whole fictional world, after all.
Lastly, about Transformers being aimed towards toddlers. I find it tragically misguided that a concept about a sci-fi war (you know, violence and politics and all that kid friendly things that come with it) keeps being tastelessly and forcefully turnt into Teletubbies, again and again. I really don't understand why they can't make up new franchises to cover those target groups. Transformers could directly rival Marvel and Star Wars in every aspect if they just let it be itself.

I do agree that some of the voice acting with optimus kind of had me wincing especially when he tried to convey emotion. Jetfire sounds more slimy than a sewer drain despite having a redemption arc, Elita-One and Cog just complain all the time, Ultra Magnus is a non-entity, and Prime... fuck me gently with a chainsaw, Optimus Prime. Whenever I hear a new rendition of the big OG O.P., I always think of that one interview when Peter Cullen said how he got the voice of Optimus. TLDR, his military brother heard about it and told him, "If you're gonna be a hero, Peter, be strong enough to be gentle." That silky voice delivery with the wisdom of decades and the pain of war is how I hear Optimus. It's why I love _Prime_ Prime so much. Foushee and Bailey doing IMPRESSIONS of Optimus are one thing; actually playing Optimus Prime is another. Hell, I feel anyone can do their own version of Optimus just by sticking to that quote. Even a good Elita-One can use that quote for reference!!

I agree with a lot of your points. As someone who literally grew up with Transformers since before the first live action movie I watched my fair share of the series.
Siege was an interesting one. It wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't put it on Prime's level of writing and animation. But rather Siege is it's own thing, and I'm glad for it.
However it certainly has some flaws, specially with the characters. Optimus, for me, wasn't terrible and you know why? His voice actor in my country was the actual one, the "official" if you will, so I got happy from knowing the voice of my favorite autobot was portrayed by my favorite voice actor. It decreased the weight that was the inconsistence of Optimus. Maybe I was lucky, maybe I'm not, who knows what the future has in store for us.
But yes, Siege is an okay series. Leagues better than some of the garbage we watched previously, but not on the same level of Transformers Prime or etc.

Transformers Prime was not only leagues ahead of the majority of other shows purely to its beautiful CGI and writing, but in my opinion also due to how it was DIFFERENT. I loved the character designs, which were a little based on the the originals while also making them more realistic and robotic fledged. The voice acting couldn’t have been better (but Raph was a little shaky at start), and it felt based on a whole new universe unlike that which I had seen before. the camera motion effects and music were a marriage made in heaven and every scene felt cinematic. Stunning I would say

I will say. I gave this show a chance after hearing about it and being spoiled about it for so long. Once I watched it the 2nd Season, and the 3rd Season. I felt no urge to watch it again. Funny thing the Bayfilms are what drew me into Transformers. I liked the films until after Age Of Extinction. Which funny enough I'm struggling to write the "Remake" Fanfiction of it.
I was young when I watch the Bay Films. Of course I liked them until I was old enough to understand that. They weren't good. But DrLockdown.

Im actually not a big fan of the overall visual direction of the show, but that's mainly due to the lackluster world design.
The world feels super hollow and empty from the scenes I've watched, and not in the cool "desolate and apocalyptic" way that the High Moon games pulled off. Like, the environment never feels relevant in any given scene. It all feels flat. The characters could be interacting with one another in a complete vacuum 99% of the time with a few props and literally nothing would change. Why does the majority of Cybertron's buildings look like a bunch of empty warehouses and corridors? Where the fuck is any evidence that these robot beings LIVE in these ruined cities? They're just walking and fighting...and walking and fighting...and walking and fighting...
Like, Beast Wars made a better use of the characters interacting with their environment and that was made with less advanced technology.
People tend to look over this element cuz when it's done well it's not noticable, but jeez man I couldn't get over this when watching the first episode and it immediately turned me off.
I apologize if it seems like I spammed the comment section btw. For some reason CZcams likes to delete my comments until it doesn't feel like it after an arbitrary amount of attempts to get it to stick.

I get what you're saying about bringing in new fans and all but that's exactly what the star wars sequel series did and they failed miserably. They catered to new fans and left out the old ones, the ones more likely to buy their merchandise or invest any type of money into it. Anywayz, there may have been an easter egg here or there but this was supposed to be a new jumping on point for new comers as well as something to appease the older fans. Hell, the Transformers 1986 movie was my first exposure to the series and although I didn't care for the cartoon I fell in love with it despite that. As a first time viewer it gave me all the info I needed to determine who was who and what was what, the importance of Prime dying and passing on the Matrix. You mentioned a IDW reference (which I've read nearly the entire series) point is, that wasn't there for them (the new comers) to get, it was a nod to us from them saying, " yea, we know our stuff too." Now I'm not gonna sit back and say seige was perfect because it most certainly wasn't, but I don't feel like the 'issues' brought up were enough to make the series unenjoyable. There are things that need to be addressed and hopefully they are with the subsequent series on the way. Despite my comment I did enjoy your view of the series though but it brought to a mind simpler times, when someone watched something to enjoy it, who either liked or didn't like it. This age of having to dissect, break down and analyze every bit, strand and piece of presented information has taken away the most important and primary reason the media was created in the first place, to just sit back and enjoy it. Imagine us as kids 'reviewing' doing 'break downs' and 'explanations' for every show we watched on Saturday/Sunday morning. It wouldn't have been fun anymore, at least not in the same way now would it? Great video tho, keep up the good work

@@DrLockdown well it was actually both. Star Wars was never a masterpiece of writing to me, in fact the things I find most interesting in star wars come from the EU and things George Lucas had little or nothing to do with. Image what your feelings for Star Wars would be now if the revelation in Empire was something other the Vader being Luke's father. That one little thing, which was sorta thrown in last minute created interest and intrigue for an otherwise basic scifi story.

The dialogue really improved in Earthrise as they were able to focus on a smaller cast of characters. I felt like Siege tried doing far too many things at once and made the variety that the show runners wanted to portray become a negative. Many of the Autobot characters are so generic and have no real personality on contrary to what you said in the video. I didn’t feel a connection to really anyone besides maybe Elita 1 because she actually had some personality. The rest of them sound like they’re all voiced by the same VA but with a slightly different voice just leaving me lost half the time on who’s who. Stand out characters like Iron Hide, Wheeljack, and Red Alert all just become essentially background characters. Don’t even get me started on how bad Optimus Prime is not only in voice but also in character.
