  • Gary Hug turned his fascination with asteroids into more than just a hobby. He built an observatory behind his house, and courtesy of his homemade reflector telescope, the "amateur" asteroid tracker has identified 300 flaming balls of ice and rock.

This is wonderful. I think he sells himself short. He may not have the degrees, but he's probably got the knowledge. And certainly the passion. Plus, the skills to build a telescope!

hopefully this man is paid full-time for his work -- it is some of the most important work a person can do.

I don't think so ( unless im mistaken) but amateur astronomers dont get paid for what they do unfortunately.

3:03 - I spy with my little astronomer eye M31 (Andromeda Galaxy) on the right, M45 (Pleiades Cluster) on the top center, and the Orion constellation with M42 (Orion Nebula) just before the frame ends on the top left. Gary Hug must live in very lucky skies in Kansas to see Andromeda with the naked eye, seems like a Bortle 3-4. Greetings from Bortle 8!

if you want to get really deep; there is no way for us to know that they are are not rocks plummeting through space at a little bit less than the speed of light that could readily hit our planet any second. that being said there is an imperative for us to discover and work hard to build a better life for our children

Michael Faraday didn't have a degree in physics or engineering, but he discovered many things... You are obviously an astronomer, keep on studying the sky.
