  • TED Fellow Carrie Nugent is an asteroid hunter -- part of a group of scientists working to discover and catalog our oldest and most numerous cosmic neighbors. Why keep an eye out for asteroids? In this short, fact-filled talk, Nugent explains how their awesome impacts have shaped our planet, and how finding them at the right time could mean nothing less than saving life on Earth.

    Carrie Nugent was my pen pal when I was around 4 years old. Honestly, although I'm not as interested in astronomy as I once was, she is some internal reason that science is one of my favorite things in school, and honestly talking with her was some of the most memorable experiences of my life back then. She is a truly amazing person.

    So if we find an asteroid on a collision course with earth, how do we nudge it? I'm guessing we send Bruce Willis to nuke it in a blaze of glory.

    • @MPaans
      @MPaans Před 7 lety +3

      It depends how long before impact we detect it. If there is enough time, we'll just send a spacecraft to it and put it in a parallel trajectory. The mass (=gravity) of the spacecraft will exert a tiny amount of force on the asteroid, nudging it out of harm's way.

    • @henkiedebomb
      @henkiedebomb Před 7 lety

      Weird, I heard Neill Degrass say that the sun is 98%as powerful on earth as in space. Or does the high velocity of the object have anything to do with the amount of radiation it catches? Or does it depend on the duration that it's catching light? I definately wouldn't expect it to get warmer than 150 degrees C (if it's a black object, comparing it to how warm it gets in the desert)

      Payton Duke the thing in her hand is a meteorite. Its passed through the Earths atmosphere and landed on Earth. Hence the internal structure and external crust. It may have been an asteroid once (whilst in space, which is what she looks for) but since we have never had a sample return from an asteroid that thing is not an asteroid.
