Manchester United have completed some questionable transfers. But one stands above all others.
This is the story of Andy Kellett from League Two to the Premier League, from training with Angel Di Maria to roofing the houses of northern England.
Probably, Man Utd’s strangest-ever transfer.

My mind immediately thought of Bebe 🤣
Yeah, this has to be strange to beat that!
Me too
Same here 😂
That had brown envelopes written all over it
What could possibly be stranger
As random as a 21 year old being loaned to Manchester United from Bolton is, surely paying £7.4m for Bebe, a player who Fergie openly admitted he had never seen play and had links with the national homeless squad, is far more random
Bebe is actually a decent player in La Liga though.
definitely
I really thought this was going to be a video about Bébé before clicking on it
@@Diego8Andres Same
But Bebe played La Liga and is in the Segunda now, this guy is in the North West Counties League...
Looking at Manchester United stadium condition he will be of great help as a Roofer.
😂😂😂😂
Oooof🔨
This story is depressing cant lie, but wishing all the best for him 👊🏾
oh boy do i have bad news for you...
@@JohnM-ch4to what happened
@@Apice.He died
@@maxmaxelin1565no he didn’t you freak
I say with sorrow, welcome to the nearly man society.
It was part of a swap. Man Untied wanted Janko to get some first team time. Bolton was willing to do the loan. Man United took Kellett as a repleacement for Janko on the u21.
As an American watcher, I wondered if it was some package deal. This kind of stuff is much more common in our leagues.
Bolton fan here. Man U's boss at the time, Van Gaal, was brought in to carry on Fergie's mantle at the club and continue with the club's high focus on youth development. They were focused heavily on winning youth competitions. We needed a right back because McNaughton was old and always injured and Dorian Dervite was not a natural right back so we went in for Janko on loan. Man U were willing to loan him out but didn't want to jeopardize their youth league chances so they took Kellett on loan who had four appearances for us in the championship at the time but was under 21 so he was eligible for their youth games.
Thought they were going to mention Bebe…
You could turn this in to a series about strange man utd transfers
Harry Maguire, Antony, Onana….. and many more
@@mrartdeco United have many bizarre transfers to choose from…but none of the ones you’ve listed are strange at all! 😭
Maguire was a solid cb for Leicester for years so he was a sensible buy with premier league experience. Onana was a ball playing gk who (in theory) fits Ten Hag’s system. He even had the most clean sheets in the champions league the previous season. And Antony played for Ajax, Ten Hag’s former club so he was a known quantity. None of those transfers are strange at all, in fact they’re very regular (albeit overpriced in hindsight). Not every transfer will work out for a myriad of reasons. That’s just football for you
@@mrartdeco how are any of those transfers strange?
Andy Goram
@@mrartdeco Maguire is a good defender who isn't suited for Ten Hag's style, Antony was starting to do well this before his case thingy started, Onana is struggling because most of Utd's defence is injured. I don't see how those 3 are strange transfers, maybe Antony can be termed as strange because apparently the board knew about his case and still signed him.
Not even the injury at the roofing job 😭 unlucky lad
He feels regret, but could he really have done anything differently?
yep, talking to the right people at the right time does wonders in any profession. A lot of luck is involved yes but him at United already was 1 in a million
I don’t know. Maybe? We’re only hearing his side of the story so keep that at the back of the mind.
But to fall to the 9th tier of english football before even hitting 30 even with injury issues is pretty extreme. I am a bit skeptical of whether his issues can be blamed solely on that.
@@asdasd-pf2xuYou're really underestimating how bad injuries can be. It can turn top level players into looking like amateurs.
@@spinyslasher6586 Yeah I've seen it happen to players in the team I support. We had a very promising centre-back who played in a Scottish Cup final at 17, won a Scottish Cup Final at 22 and got a couple of Scotland caps at 23... and by the age of 25 was playing in England's League Two, by 27 was playing in Scottish League One, then Scottish non-league and by the age of 28 was in the _Australian second-tier._
A whole heap of injuries just destroyed his career.
I don’t think it’s that strange. He was s young player with potential, it didn’t work out. Happens all the time
There must be many more stranger transfers than this one.
This really wasn't a strange transfer, it was a surprise when it happened but it made sense. LVG thought U21 success was important. United were chasing the U21 league title and were short at left back so brought in a reserve player capable of helping the U21s over the line.
Thank you for this context
Liverpool did a similar thing in the 10/11 season when they signed Conor Thomas from Championship side Coventry City, despite the fact he'd never played a league match in his career (only played in 2 FA Cup games). He was with the reserves, then got an injury Liverpool sent him back. Played 100 league game for Coventry, spent most of his career in Leagues 1 and 2, had one season in India, and now plays for Crewe Alexandra
Iny fm save he is my genreral manager
With Janko going the other way on loan to get first team football i imagine it was only to replace him on the u23 while he was away.. so thats why they never signed him permanently and it was only a loan because the u23 needed someone in that position
Can't even remember this transfer 😂
Never had of it either 😅
Plz make one on the era of SAF transfers.
There were many many players that only SAF would give a chance in a champions league level club, let along premier league champions level.
How did he came up with "el chicharito"?
I immediately thought of Bebe 😅
Not sure if Tifo has made one for Arsenal, but a couple years ago they bought a 20y Norwegian winger from the 3. tier in Norway. George Lewis, if I remember correctly, he had never played any senior games in the Norwegian highest division and no one knew about him. He joined the U23 side, and stayed there for a couple of seasons. As of 2023 I believe his without a club lol, and never appeared for the main team.
That's kinda sad, what's there to laugh about it?
It's not Bebe, that's the most shocking plot twist here
More sad than strange I think, it looks like he had some talent.
Oh he had more than just talent, on and OFF the pitch too. I’m from bolton, this guy used to freakin DESTROY my sisters, they took turns, our house sounded like a damn war-zone at times
@@thespeculum785 I think you might be over sharing here my friend.
@@automatedcryptoapp4573😂
Just goes to show that to "make it" as a pro is dependent on more than just being a good player, so many things have to go your way
Nearly as random as when Arsenal signed non-league Cohen Bramall
Or like Pepe
When you are young and playing really well there are chances of playing for top teams without really having the skills to be there. But once you pass a certain age you better be the best in that position or you easily get shuffled downward fast. It's a brutal world of football, only a few % makes it.
Part of me wanted to say William Prunier. Brought in on trial in 1996 as a short term replacement for an injured Bruce & Pallister. Was seen as a solid replacement, downside was absolutely nobody knew who Prunier was, or much about him as a player, aside that Cantona knew him from playeing as Auxerre and Bordeaux. Played well on his debut but than had an awful game against Spurs. Apparently he was only ever given a trial contract but later he revealed he had been offered a 3 year old deal but due to his anonymity and lack of playing time in the French league, no agent or coach would vouch for him or fully represent him. He went on to play for Napoli, Hearts, Montpellier, Al-Sillya and Tolouse.
Nick Powell too!
Oooo I signed Kellett in football manager 2012 for my Dorchester team. He was pretty good up to league 1.
I hope it gets better for him
Wish him healthy in the future🙏🙏🙏
I definitely remember this guy went under the radar 😅
I suppose it goes to show the realities players face at the lower levels of the Football League…. The gulf between Premier League & upper end Championship levels compared to the rest of the pyramid is massive. I don’t mean quality wise really. This lad is a roofer and working for BT after playing football, whereas most young players who’ve played a handful of Premier League games will likely never have to work again.
The top end of the sport is so far removed from the lower ends now, it’s mad.
I think that's sick and unfair, but then again, that's just life and any profession, really. Top 1% is far, far removed from the rest.
@@Mesjach I’m sick and unfair? Apologies I didn’t mean to come across that way
@@DannyKeogh94no he thinks that the massive gap you described is sick and unfair
This is cold. Feels like documenting a characters demise for no great reason
I find it interesting. I think it's good to get insight from former professionals like this.
one of the most legendary that Manchester United presents to its new players is alexis sanchez.....🤣🤣🤣
Lee Grant has to be up there in Manchester United Strange Signings too
I think that's Guiseley's first mention on Tifo!! Famous at last
For me it has to be Odion Ighalo post-fergie era. We needed a striker butpanicked and panicked to get a deal done(typical United) and called up China to get some random guy. Yes he scored a few good goals but he wasn’t a good long-term striker for us
That defender bought from Ajax. A 175 centimeter central defender bought for i dont know how much!
I really expected a William Prunier video. But fair play
I have been reminded Victor valdes played for united
That’s really sad, a contractual clause effectively ruined any hope of a future for him. United could have had anyone they wanted for a better price. I’d imagine it’s better to have experienced top level football than forever be a league two level player though. Respect to him for sticking with the game
0:13 oh is that where Harry Maguire is??
My guess was Bebe.
When you look at some of the transfers ManUtd have made over the past decade this one does not seem strange at all honestly :D.
From Man Utd to Bury... wow
I can't imagine how depressing it must have been. Getting to the elite level and then spiralling downwards
We'd probably have him at sheff united at the minute!
Has to be Manucho
there doesn't seem to be anything strange about this transfer at all. He was a young player who was playing well, and by the sounds of it he did pretty well while he was there, albeit in the reserves. Its not like they paid a ridiculous amount of money for him or that they bought him expecting him to be the first choice left back. Then it seems he had some injuries and his career went down hill. But there doesn't seem to be anything particularly strange about the transfer itself.
He was quality at Argyle
Any chance he could sign for us again now? Lord knows we could use a LB badly
we can do what we can within our abilities but sometimes it is fate that things turn out in that manner
Honestly cute little story there
Well, United dealings have been spooky for the last 11 years
This is a great story
I know he was Ten Hag’s boy at Ajax but I just cant get over the $86M for Anthony. Strange amount of cash for a cool spin move once in awhile lol
You could make a top 10 of them 😂😂
There is an alternate universe where this video is about Sean Connery
I was sure this would be Bebe.
Proper banter club
I like the idea of the second soundtrack, but the Spanish subtitles are always unsynchronized
I thought it’s either Djemba-Djemba or Bebe😂
I feel sorry for him tbh but hopefully Bury can rise up the leagues
I thought this was gonna be Bebe
Eric Djemba-Djemba
The narrator keeps saying “his time at Old Trafford” even though he was a U23 player who never made a senior appearance
Damn, kind of a sad story
Victor Valdez was at utd?? 🤯🤯
Its not surprising for man united specially after sir alex
What is funny Borthwick-Jackson ended up in Polish league and he is not even playing. He soon will be out of pro football too probably and end up playing with Vizeh in the same level.
This could be Sancho
10/10 for the apperance of the Manchester tram 😁
the Chinese guy for united was strange :p
Racist comment coming from you plastic United fan.
why did I think of harry maguire before the video
Not really a story signing a promising young player on loan then not signing him permanently. 🤷♂️
Please can you make a galaatasaray video
John Mikel Obi is the weirdest surely?
Immediately thought it was going to be Bebe.
The Manchester United channel
Good luck to him. Tifo turning into a Man U life story channel. Your better than that guys👍
No one is forcing you to watch their videos, mate.
Eric Djemba-Djemba?
Not bebe??..strange indeed
That would be maguire for 85m
Not really. At the time it was seen as a sensible but very overpriced transfer. And in hindsight that’s exactly what it was.
Maguire was a solid cb for Leicester for 3 years. So from United perspective, ideally they were expecting a proven premier league player who could potentially be a starting cb for the next 5-7 years. That’s not at all what happened but that’s football for you, transfers go wrong ALL the time and Maguire to United was no exception
I thought Bebe. Season ticket 16 years and never heard of this guy
Unfortunately you committed the cardinal sin of the north - pronouncing Salford wrong. The Sal is pronounced like it is in Salt, rather than like it is in Salivate
I am a Manchester United fan since 2006 and this is the first time I'm hearing about this player
Odion IGHALO 🤦🤦🤦🤦
Bebe has left the chat
Miss your voice Joe…….
He doesn't look like Bebe hmmm
Petition to have Joe Devine read me bedtime stories
Sanchez?
DJEMBA DJEMBA has to be the most RANDOM signing
Fred??
Most people look at this as a L . But he achieved something probably less than 1% of the world's population have done
True, and football isn’t even his greatest talent. It was well known throughout Bolton that Andy was packing a truly immense hog, the joy of all the ladies haha
My mind suddenly thought of Jonny Evans transfer this season
That’s not as weird as Paul McShane!
@@tomwantshelp who!?
@@dsabharwal9 in 2021, United signed 35-year-old centre back Paul McShane who had recently been released by Rochdale. The point was to have an experienced player to train with the U21s. McShane is a United academy graduate who made 98 top flight appearances for Sunderland and Hull, and won over 30 Ireland caps - surprised you hadn’t heard of him!
I think oNaNa transfer is looking stranger by the day
A strange transfer means it is unusual or unexpected. Onana to United is an extremely regular transfer. He was brilliant at Inter and had the most clean sheets in the champions league last season. On paper, it seems like a good move. Transfers don’t work out for a myriad of reasons, and Man United have an unfortunate knack of making good players much worse while they’re at the club, at least this past decade. From Pogba, Di Maria, Falcao, Maguire, Sanchez, Depay, Sancho and now Onana too
@@silvesta5027only two of those players can even be considered as “getting worse” once going to united
Pogba- honestly one of the best transfers united had, never had a team or midfield built around him, everyone knew his ability but united surrounded him with horrible midfielders until Bruno came+favoritism from ole didnt help
Di maria- not really, if he didnt have off field issues he wouldve been so good.. played out of position every game by LvG and basically shunned out after January while getting 13 G/A in 27 in the prem? not too bad
Falcao- Had already been ruined by a horrible injury prior to arriving, even struggled with it at chelsea
Maguire- 😭😭😭😭
Sanchez- was already struggling with Arsenal before switching, 7 goals by January is not good even for him
Depay- flopped HARD, made prem move way too young
sancho- getting bullied by a bald dictator at the club, doesnt help himself either tho
@@pogboom5819 No, they all struggled whilst at United and were all deemed unsuccessful transfers - hence why they’re mentioned. Many of those examples, Falcao, Di Maria, and Depay had successful stints elsewhere after they left the club
@@pogboom5819Sancho was given 3 months off last season when we needed him in an important part of the season, to get train with a specialist as well as time to improve his mental health. Since coming back, he's consistently arrived late in training, and never put any effort in training. It's not bullying, he was given care, and hasn't given any effort back in return. Disgrace of a player to the club and the fans, he was my favourite now I just want him gone
Doesn't sound that strange at all.
